Tigers | Victor Martinez scratched

Wed, 18 May 2016 09:00:00 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez was scratched Wednesday, May 18, with OF Steven Moya hitting sixth. Martinez needed extra rest. 3B Nick Castellanos and OF Justin Upton moved up one spot to cleanup and fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Moya is 6-for-15 (.400) and has some luster against Ricky Nolasco. Castellanos is a daily consideration. Upton is another story. He's hitting .213 this month and .218 on the year. He's a big risk in DFS without a lot of positive signs.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos out of lineup

Wed, 11 May 2016 12:16:39 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, May 11, in a National League ballpark. 1B Miguel Cabrera is moving to third base, while 1B Victor Martinez gets the start at first against Washington Nationals SP Max Scherzer.

Fantasy Tip: While facing Scherzer, most might be hesitant to use Cabrera or V-Mart in daily leagues, but they can still return value as contrarian picks at high prices. Scherzer has been vulnerable to the long ball with 1.9 home runs allowed per nine innings in 2016.

Tigers | Better pitch recognition for Nick Castellanos

Sat, 07 May 2016 17:04:21 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos said he's more comfortable and is trusting his hands more at the plate as he's better able to recognize pitches before committing to them. Entering the game Sunday, May 8, he's hitting .443 against right-handed pitchers and isn't swinging at sliders out of the strike zone. Castellanos has been showing nice power to the opposite field, too.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos is in the midst of a breakout season and should reach the 20-homer mark easily for the first time in his career if he stays healthy. A high BABIP (.453) means regression is in store, but even then, Castellanos should remain useful in all leagues.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos remains red-hot

Thu, 05 May 2016 18:28:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and scored twice on Thursday, May 5, in a loss against the Cleveland Indians - his sixth multi-hit game in the last seven contests.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos isn't performing quite at the level of Nolan Arenado, Josh Donaldson or Manny Machado, but he's right at the top of the next tier so far. The 24-year-old is hitting .517 with three home runs and 12 RBI during his eight-game hitting streak and appears to be right at home batting behind in the six-hole behind the likes of Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Justin Upton. He has an outstanding chance at finishing as a top-five third baseman this season.

Tigers | More discipline for Nick Castellanos

Thu, 05 May 2016 10:48:02 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos, who is slashing .368/.376/.586, has learned to lay off pitches in the lower corner of the strike zone. From 2013 until the All-Star break last year, he had a .132 slugging percentage on those pitches. "Everyone has their kryptonite," manager Brad Ausmus said. "But he's learning, I think, to recognize it and lay off it more or at least get a piece of the wood on it and put the pressure on the defense."

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos is only 24 and is hitting behind proven sluggers like Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera. He couldn't be in a better situation to see his power and discipline mature, and that's what's happening this year. Castellanos is a real threat to reach 20 homers this year while also contributing a handy average for owners.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos resting

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 13:03:43 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 19. 3B Mike Aviles is starting at the hot corner and is hitting seventh against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles doesn't do much for fantasy owners. He hit .231 with only five home runs in limited duty last season and should be avoided in all formats.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos drives in four

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 13:44:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos went 3-for-4 with one home run and four RBI against the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday, April 14.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos is off to a strong start with a .333 average and seven RBI in his first eight games. Castellanos could be an everyday third baseman in deeper mixed leagues because of his upside and a corner infield option in standard mixed leagues.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos will not start

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 07:42:41 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos is not in the starting lineup against New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia Saturday, April 9. SS Mike Aviles will start at third base and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles likely will receive playing time at multiple positions but should not receive a lot of at-bats this season. Owners probably can avoid Aviles and look for other options.

Tigers | Nick Castellano singles-happy Friday

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 14:05:56 -0700

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos was 4-for-4 with four singles and a run against the New York Yankees Friday, April 8, to raise his average on the early season to .417.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos could be beginning a breakout year in 2016 if he improves his power numbers in an excellent lineup. He should be owned in all formats, at least as corner infield depth in shallower formats.

Tigers | Nick Castellanos to sit Wednesday

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 23:58:50 -0800

Detroit Tigers 3B Nick Castellanos (back) is expected to miss another Grapefruit League spring game Wednesday, March 9, manager Brad Ausmus said.

Fantasy Tip: Castellanos is being rested with several weeks to go until the regular season. He should be just fine for fantasy owners barring any setbacks.
