Marlins | Martin Prado back, Jarred Cosart optioned

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 13:41:29 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Martin Prado was reinstated from the paternity list Tuesday, April 26, and SP Jarred Cosart was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans in a corresponding move. SP Justin Nicolino could make the start Wednesday, April 27, after going 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA for New Orleans. Cosart was 0-1 with a 7.89 ERA in three starts, and he walked 15 in 14 2/3 frames with eight strikeouts. Cosart mentioned he wasn't happy with his mechanics and didn't "feel natural" with his lower hand placement.

Fantasy Tip: Return Prado to your starting lineups wherever you own him. Cosart can likely be dropped wherever he's owned, as he's no sure bet to rejoin the rotation anytime soon. Unlike Cosart, Nicolino has great control, but that's really where the intrigue ends. He could be a short-term stream option in the right matchups in the deeper and daily leagues.

Marlins | Jarred Cosart tweaking mechanics

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 06:24:35 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jarred Cosart said he is changing his pitching mechanics to return to something that feels comfortable after altering his hand placement during spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Cosart has walked 15 batters through 14 2/3 innings this season and sits with a 7.98 ERA and 2.11 WHIP. Ignore him in all formats until he proves he is a viable fantasy option.

Marlins | Adam Conley makes rotation

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 16:33:43 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley earned the No. 3 starting rotation role, with SPs Tom Koehler and Jarred Cosart following him, according to manager Don Mattingly. Conley's first start will come against the Washington Nationals April 7. He went 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA in 9 2/3 innings this spring. Cosart topped out at 98 mph this spring and didn't allow a run in 9 2/3 innings while striking out nine.

Fantasy Tip: There is excellent value to be had by selecting Conley as a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues. The lefty is a strikeout artist that has great K/BB ratios and will continue to fly under the radar. Cosart, despite his heat, has struggled to generate a lot of K's, and his shaky command limits his upside.

Marlins | Jarred Cosart impressing this spring

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 14:31:48 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jarred Cosart tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings in a Grapefruit League game while striking out four Monday, March 21, as he battles for a rotation spot. He has 9 2/3 scoreless innings this spring. Cosart is fully healthy and has refined his delivery to the point where he's producing quality pitches. He's now keeping his left elbow closed in his windup, which helps him deliver more downward movement on his fastball.

Fantasy Tip: Cosart's one glaring weakness has been his control, so if his new mechanics help him stay around the plate more often, we could have something here if he wins a rotation job. Keep tabs on his competition this spring and consider selecting him as a late-round flier in deep mixed and NL-only formats.

Marlins | Adam Conley making his case

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 10:23:27 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley is making a case to be the team's fourth starter, and he's impressed manager Don Mattingly this spring. SPs Jarred Cosart, Justin Nicolino, Jose Urena, Edwin Jackson and David Phelps are fighting for the final rotation spot.

Fantasy Tip: It took Conley a while to get going after tendonitis issues stemming from 2014, but he's not a bad end-game target in really deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats if he wins a rotation spot.

Marlins | Jarred Cosart could return this week

Sun, 06 Mar 2016 08:29:16 -0800

Miami Marlins SP Jarred Cosart (knee) could return to action by the end of the week, after suffering a right knee injury while covering third base Friday, March 4, according to manager Don Mattingly.

Fantasy Tip: Cosart is battling for one of the club's final two spots in the starting rotation. He went 2-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 13 starts in a disappointing 2015 campaign while battling multiple injuries but is a prime candidate for a bounce-back season. He could be worth a flier in the later rounds of NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Astros | No ligament damage for Jarred Cosart

Fri, 04 Mar 2016 13:08:52 -0800

Updating a previous story, Houston Astros SP Jarred Cosart (knee) is expected to be fine after colliding with 3B Martin Prado on a play at third base on Friday, March 4. Cosart left to have his right knee checked out by a trainer in the clubhouse and was later diagnosed with a bruise and sore calf.

Fantasy Tip: Cosart is a 25-year-old former top prospect for the Houston Astros that produced a 2.39 ERA in 10 starts following his 2014 trade to Miami before going 2-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 14 appearances (13 starts) with the Marlins last season. He is a candidate for a bounce-back season and should win a spot in the back end of Miami's rotation, but not someone owners need to have on their roster to begin 2016.

Marlins | Jarred Cosart leaves outing

Fri, 04 Mar 2016 11:32:39 -0800

Miami Marlins SP Jarred Cosart (knee) left his start early Friday, March 4, after colliding with 3B Martin Prado on a play at third base. He walked gingerly off the mound after the inning and went to the clubhouse with the trainer to have his right knee checked out.

Fantasy Tip: Cosart has become somewhat of a forgotten name in fantasy circles after a very disappointing season last year that was hampered by injuries. However, owners shouldn't forget that when he first came to Miami midway through 2014, he produced a 2.39 ERA in 10 starts, so there is definitely potential for a rebound. This isn't a good start towards achieving that, though.

Marlins | Jarred Cosart not guaranteed a spot

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 22:12:34 -0800

Miami Marlins SP Jarred Cosart isn't guaranteed of a rotation spot, and the team has even indicated a willingness to send him to the minors if he doesn't win a starting job. If he does win a job, he would be slotted behind SPs Jose Fernandez, Wei-Yin Chen and Tom Koehler.

Fantasy Tip: Cosart has had a tale of two seasons over the past two campaigns, winning 13 games with a 3.69 ERA in 30 starts between Houston and Miami in 2014, and 2-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 13 starts in 2015. However, he did deal with a bout of vertigo which threw him off last season. If he is over that situation he could rebound nicely and be quite the fantasy sleeper in NL-only formats and deeper mixed leagues.

Marlins | Jarred Cosart suffers loss Wednesday

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 19:35:42 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jarred Cosart (2-5) allowed five runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, Sept. 30, with four walks and four strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Cosart ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) is not scheduled to pitch again this year, so he can safely be dropped in redraft leagues.
