Rockies | Jordan Lyles expects to make start

Thu, 14 May 2015 05:09:59 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles (hand) is expected to make his next start Monday, May 18, against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fantasy Tip: Lyles ($3,500, 7.0% of your cap) is dealing with a contusion to his pitching hand, so it might affect him gripping the baseball. We'd probably steer clear on FantasyScore, despite a solid matchup.

Rockies | Jordan Lyles injured

Thu, 14 May 2015 04:44:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles (forearm) underwent X-rays after being hit by a comebacker Wednesday, May 13, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Lyles had a swelled hand, but X-rays showed no breaks.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Lyles ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has no breaks, he still may have to miss a start if that forearm hasn't healed properly. Be prepared to stash him in regular leagues and monitor his progress in the daily ones.

Rockies | Jordan Lyles hit by comebacker

Wed, 13 May 2015 20:53:18 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles (forearm) was forced from his start Wednesday, May 14, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after taking a liner off of his right forearm.

Fantasy Tip: Lyles was replaced by Christian Bergman to start the second inning. The severity of Lyles' injury is not yet known, but there were reports he suffered instant swelling, so it sounds like he could miss time.

Rockies | Jordan Lyles fixes mechanics in win

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 16:38:18 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles resisted the urge to fall toward first base on his fastballs in his impressive start and win over the San Diego Padres Thursday, April 23. It gave him better control, and he held the Padres to one run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Lyles walked two and struck out four in the outing.

Fantasy Tip: Lyles ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) has been very impressive to start the 2015 season, and he should be owned in all standard fantasy leagues at this point. An efficient outing in a hitter's park against one of the better offenses in the league Thursday will put him on the FantasyScore radar moving forward.

Rockies | Jordan Lyles becoming K pitcher?

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 14:06:20 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles is honing the split-fingered changeup that he developed last summer into more of a strikeout pitch this spring. Lyles has struck out six batters in seven Cactus League innings after managing a career-high 6.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 2014. He also has given up 1.39 ground balls for every fly ball in his career. "Of my strikeouts this spring, I want to say 75% (of the put-away pitches) have been changeups," said Lyles. "That tells me it's a little more difficult to see."

Fantasy Tip: Lyles is far from a household fantasy name, but he might be worth throwing a few bucks at in deep mixed leagues to see if he can keep up his strikeout potential with a new and improved pitch. His ground-ball profile should help him succeed at Coors Field, too.

Rockies | Jordan Lyles worked on new changeup

Thu, 07 Aug 2014 09:18:25 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Jordan Lyles worked on a new changeup while he was rehabbing for two months, and he used it in his start against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, Aug. 6. He went from using a circle change to a split changeup, and he thinks it'll make a big difference. "I've thrown it in three live [batting practice] sessions and two rehab starts, and it's been a plus pitch," he said. "Not one has been hit hard in those five appearances. The funny thing is the first one I throw it, Coghlan hits it for a triple. I'm excited about that pitch."

Fantasy Tip: Lyles is still young and has plenty of work to do before he's considered in mixed leagues, but his new changeup might give him some strikeout upside. However, he's still not very dominant, and pitching in Coors Field will continue to scare many off. He's strictly an NL-only option.
