Athletics | Henderson Alvarez unlikely before May

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:47:51 -0800

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is unlikely to make his team debut until May, general manager David Forst said Sunday, Jan. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is making his way back from shoulder surgery last July. He could be a tremendous fantasy option once he debuts as O.co Coliseum is a great pitcher's park.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez return timetable

Mon, 28 Dec 2015 15:28:51 -0800

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) has an approximate timeline to begin throwing off a mound in early March 2016, according to assistant general manager David Forst.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is a potential late-round flier in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues next spring, if he is healthy and on track to be in the rotation to begin the season. His career 4.7 K/9 doesn't move the fantasy needle, so his ratios need to be elite to make him a viable fantasy asset.

Athletics | Oakland signs Henderson Alvarez

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 12:41:13 -0800

Free-agent SP Henderson Alvarez (Marlins) signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Oakland Athletics Friday, Dec. 18, and he could earn up to $5.85 million with incentives.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez made just four starts last season, so when you consider his underwhelming 4.7 K/9 for his career, there isn't a lot to like about Alvarez in the majority of seasonal leagues. At best, he is a late-round flier in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues next spring.

Marlins | Henderson Alvarez non-tendered

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 18:48:38 -0800

The Miami Marlins have decided not to tender a contract to SP Henderson Alvarez, making him a free agent.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez, who made the 2014 National League All-Star team, underwent right shoulder surgery in July and is expected to miss the beginning of the 2016 season. He went 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA in four starts in an injury-plagued 2015 campaign after posting a 12-7 record and 2.65 ERA in 30 starts during the previous year. There's likely to be no shortage of teams willing to take a gamble on a 25-year-old right-hander who has experienced as much prior success as he has and he could be worth a flier in the later rounds of next season's fantasy baseball drafts.

Marlins | Henderson Alvarez had torn labrum

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 08:56:06 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder), who had season-ending surgery Wednesday, July 29, was dealing with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Manager Dan Jennings said Alvarez's surgery was a success.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) can be dropped in all fantasy leagues at this time. He's in danger of not being ready for spring training next year, too, so his draft value heading into the 2016 season will be weak.

Marlins | Henderson Alvarez uncertain for ST

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 22:55:45 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) had surgery Tuesday, July 28, on his shoulder, and manager Dan Jennings said it is unclear if Alvarez will be ready for spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez was winless in four decisions before shutting it down for the season. He could come on the cheap next spring in fantasy drafts as a result.

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 13:51:27 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is undergoing surgery on a tear in his shoulder Tuesday, July 28.

Fantasy Tip: Shoulder surgeries for pitchers are typically pretty serious. There is no timetable for Alvarez's return, but don't be surprised if he doesn't return to pitch again this year. Stay tuned for more details.

Marlins | Henderson Alvarez has so-so outing

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 21:36:36 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) allowed two unearned runs, four hits and two walks with no strikeouts over three innings in his second minor-league rehab outing with Class A Jupiter. He did not record any strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is working his way back from right shoulder inflammation. Avoid him in FantasyScore until he can officially return and prove his health in at least two starts without any setbacks.

Marlins | Henderson Alvarez begins rehab assignment

Wed, 15 Jul 2015 13:25:19 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) was placed on his rehab assignment with high-A Jupiter Wednesday, July 15.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has only made four starts this season, but the 25-year-old righty remains a decent source of ratios in the majority of seasonal leagues. However, he doesn't strike out many batters (career 4.7 K/9), and wins could be hard to find with the Marlins going forward. Continue to check back for updates on Alvarez's recovery and for a return timeline.

Marlins | Henderson Alvarez back in second half

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 04:54:06 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) will not likely return to the active roster until after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) will provide a big boost to the team when healthy, but for now the team wants to be careful. Monitor his progress and do not play him immediately when he returns.
