Athletics | Henderson Alvarez suffers setback

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 19:38:53 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) suffered a setback in his rehab start Saturday, June 18, and has been shut down.

Fantasy Tip: With each setback, it becomes less likely that Alvarez will provide any useful production for fantasy owners. Feel free to stash him if you have a DL spot, but don't count on him contributing.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez likely for rehab start

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 11:13:57 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) will be considered for a start Saturday, June 18, but he'll likely make a rehab start with Class AAA Nashville to be on the safe side, according to manager Bob Melvin.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is worth stashing in most formats because he has the stuff to be a quality SP3 the rest of the way.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez could join rotation

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 16:43:35 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) said he will pitch five or six innings for Class AAA Nashville in his rehab start Saturday, June 18. Manager Bob Melvin added that Alvarez could potentially join the starting rotation after that rehab outing.

Fantasy Tip: The A's are starving for starting arms on their pitching staff, having already lost a bunch to injuries. It's so bad that Eric Surkamp is even one of the starting five right now. Thus, chances are Alvarez will indeed be headed to Oakland right after his upcoming rehab start -- barring any setbacks -- and he'll definitely be someone to monitor in many leagues for his potential. In deeper leagues, he may be worth stashing right now, in fact.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez to rehab Monday

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 15:20:35 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) will pitch two to three innings with Class AA Stockton Monday, June 13.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is slowly working his way back and could join the A's rotation at the end of this month if he doesn't suffer any setbacks in his rehab assignment. The right-hander was an All-Star just two years ago with the Marlins. He won't strike out many, but his ground-ball inducing arsenal should play well at O.co Coliseum for owners in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Stash him now if he's available.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez throwing sim game

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 15:32:40 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is throwing a two-inning simulated game Tuesday, June 7.

Fantasy Tip: Look for Alvarez to pitch in at least several rehab starts before the A's activate him to make his season debut. He's not a heavy strikeout guy, but his ground-ball tendencies could play well in pitcher-friendly O.co Coliseum in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Stash him now if he's available in those setups.

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 12:53:10 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) threw 35 pitches during a bullpen session Saturday, June 4, and felt good during the session.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez probably will need to make a few rehab starts before he returns, but he may rejoin the rotation at some point this month. He should have value in AL-only leagues as well as some deeper mixed leagues.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez throws Wednesday

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 17:46:18 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) threw 40 pitches off a mound Wednesday, June 1, and could begin a rehab assignment next week.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez remains worthy of being stashed in AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues due to his ability to induce ground balls while playing his home games in a pitcher-friendly ballpark, even though he won't record many strikeouts. Don't be surprised to see him return to action later this month.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez throws

Mon, 30 May 2016 22:51:09 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) threw off flat ground before the game Monday, May 30. He will next throw off the mound in the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez isn't a bad stash option in AL-only fantasy leagues for his win potential, especially in spacious O.co Coliseum in Oakland. However, he isn't a huge source of strikeouts, so keep that in mind for when he is healthy enough to return.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez to throw Wednesday

Wed, 25 May 2016 17:11:40 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) threw at a distance of 75 feet Tuesday, May 24, and did not experience any issues. He plans to throw at a distance of 90 feet Wednesday, May 25, according to manager Bob Melvin.

Fantasy Tip: It's a promising sign that Alvarez is able to throw on consecutive days after being sidelined recently for a week due to shoulder discomfort. He deserves to be stashed in most fantasy leagues due to his potential to induce lots of ground balls at the hitter-friendly O.co Coliseum when healthy, although he won't rack up many strikeouts.

Athletics | Henderson Alvarez to resume throwing

Mon, 23 May 2016 17:55:08 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) will resume throwing Tuesday, May 24. He's missed a week after experiencing shoulder discomfort.

Fantasy Tip: Good news for Oakland that the right-hander is able to get back on the mound, though it's still a little concerning that it's taken the former All-Star this long, as his initial timetable had him returning at some point in May. That does not look like it will happen, but Alvarez can certainly help out fantasy teams as soon as he's ready to return. Keep monitoring his progress.
