Phillies | Vincent Velasquez continues to shine

Sun, 01 May 2016 17:22:30 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez allowed two hits while walking four and striking out six over six scoreless innings in a win over the Cleveland Indians Sunday, May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez is now 4-1 with a 1.44 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings, and the 23-year-old should be owned and starting in all formats at this point.

Phillies | Vincent Velasquez knocked around

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 23:20:27 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez allowed five runs - two earned - and five hits with no walks and four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in a loss against the New York Mets Tuesday, April 19.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez still has a 0.93 ERA, as these were his first earned runs allowed this season. Chalk this up as one poor outing. He remains a useful fantasy option in NL-only leagues and DFS play.

Phillies | Vince Velasquez tries to stay hot

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 21:01:08 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez is set to start Tuesday, April 19, against the New York Mets. He topped the Mets April 9 with nine strikeouts, three walks and just three hits allowed over six scoreless innings.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez has come out of nowhere to emerge as a must-start fantasy option in NL-only leagues and some mixed formats, while also serving as a strong DFS value.

Phillies | Vincent Velasquez with epic performance

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 14:16:38 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez struck out a career-high 16 batters in a three-hit, complete-game shutout of the San Diego Padres Thursday, April 14. He had no walks and extended his scoreless streak to 15 innings. It was also his first career shutout in nine career starts. Velasquez retired the last 14 hitters he faced. His 25 K's through the first two starts are the most by a Phillies pitcher since Jim Bunning had 20 in 1964.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez, as you saw from his first two outings, has elite upside as a power pitcher. If he's available in your league, he must be added immediately. Take note that Velasquez's first two starts have come against shaky offenses, though, meaning some regression is in store.

Phillies | Vincent Velasquez sharp in debut

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 19:17:43 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez tossed six scoreless innings in a win over the New York Mets Saturday, April 9, allowing three runs and three walks while striking out nine.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez showcased his strikeout upside, and he is worth rostering in all but the shallowest leagues.

Mets | David Wright gets a day off Saturday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 14:12:30 -0700

New York Mets 3B David Wright is out of the lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez on Saturday, April 9. SS Wilmer Flores will replace Wright in the field and bat seventh.

Fantasy Tip: The forecast calls for temperatures in the high 30s with a fairly decent chance of precipitation, so New York is probably smart to play it safe here. Flores is a decent option for Wright owners and a serviceable inexpensive play in DFS leagues, but most owners can leave him on waivers for now.

Phillies | Vincent Velasquez finishes spring strong

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 12:13:45 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez pitched six scoreless innings with just two hits and three walks allowed while striking out eight batters against the Toronto Blue Jays Monday, March 28. Toronto also started its best lineup against Velasquez.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez is moving up the rankings for deep mixed and NL-only leagues as the fifth starter for the Phillies, and he has the potential to reward those willing to take a late-round flier on his upside. Through 55 2/3 innings last season, Velasquez struck out 58 batters and posted a 3.46 FIP. A move to the National League is a positive, too. Still, you'll likely want to be selective with the opponents you start him against, especially until Velsaquez has more of a track record.

Phillies | Vincent Velasquez wins fifth spot

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 09:25:10 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez has won the competition for the No. 5 starting spot.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez is even more attractive now. The youngster has great control and a promising arsenal that can induce plenty of swings and misses. So what he pitches for the Phillies? Many will overlook him simply because of that late in deep mixed leagues, but you shouldn't.

Phillies | Hot battle for Phils' fifth spot

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 06:27:08 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Adam Morgan and SP Vincent Velasquez are in a hot battle for the fifth starter spot, and the team is struggling to separate them. They could justify using a six-man rotation, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez has more upside as he has struck out 354 batters in 296 2/3 minor league innings in his career. He'll be an unheralded NL-only option with some deep mixed potential. Morgan is an NL-only grab.

Phillies | Brett Oberholtzer to be used in relief

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 09:33:01 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies P Brett Oberholtzer has been eliminated from consideration to be the team's No. 5 starter and will begin the season in the bullpen. SPs Adam Morgan and Vincent Velasquez will continue to vie for the job, with Velasquez scheduled to start a minor-league game Wednesday, March 23, and Morgan expected to start a Grapefruit League game versus the Atlanta Braves Thursday, March 24.

Fantasy Tip: Oberholtzer walked one and struck out two over eight scoreless innings in Grapefruit League play and was almost certain to make the 25-man roster because he is out of options. He has no fantasy value as long as he is not being used as a starter.
