Phillies | Mark Appel dealt to Phils

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 12:30:47 -0800

Updating previous reports, the Philadelphia Phillies have traded RP Ken Giles and SS Jonathan Arauz to the Houston Astros, in exchange for Ps Mark Appel, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez, Harold Arauz and Thomas Eshelman.

Fantasy Tip: Appel, who was not included in the original version of the deal, is a 24-year-old right-hander who was selected with the first overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft, although he has not lived up to expectations thus far. He is 16-11 with a 5.12 ERA through 54 minor league games (53 starts) over three seasons, including a 5-2 record and 4.48 ERA in 12 starts for Class AAA Fresno in 2015. Appel has a decent shot of reaching the majors in 2016 and should be monitored in cavernous mixed and NL-only fantasy leagues. The revised deal does not include minor league OF Derek Fisher, who will remain part of the Astros' organization.

Astros | Ken Giles deal finalized

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 12:30:16 -0800

Updating previous reports, the Houston Astros received RP Ken Giles and SS Jonathan Arauz from the Philadelphia Phillies, in exchange for Ps Mark Appel, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez, Harold Arauz and Thomas Eshelman.

Fantasy Tip: Unlike the original version of the deal, the Astros were able to hang on to minor league OF Derek Fisher and parted ways with Appel, Eshelman and Harold Arauz instead, while receiving Jonathan Arauz in addition to Giles. From a Houston standpoint, this deal is attractive because Giles is young (25), inexpensive and under club control for several seasons. His fantasy value has received a significant boost now that he is pitching for a contender and he should be one of the first closers selected in all fantasy formats during next year's drafts.

Phillies | Ken Giles traded to Houston

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 18:53:59 -0800

The Philadelphia Phillies have traded RP Ken Giles to the Houston Astros, in exchange for SPs Brett Oberholtzer and Vincent Velasquez and OF Derek Fisher. The deal is pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: Despite being only 25 and under club control through 2017, Giles was expendable because having a closer on a rebuilding team is considered a luxury. Oberholtzer is a 26-year-old left-hander who has gone 11-20 with a 3.94 ERA over parts of three major league seasons, including a 2-2 record with a 4.46 ERA in eight starts in 2015. Velasquez, a 23-year-old righty, went 1-1 with a 4.37 ERA in 19 games (seven starts) for Houston last year. Fisher, 22, hit .275 with 22 home runs, 87 RBIs and 31 steals in 123 games for two Class A teams in 2015. Oberholtzer and Velasquez have chances to make the Phils' rotation next spring, while Fisher is likely to begin the 2016 season with Class AA Reading.

Astros | Ken Giles acquired from Philadelphia

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 18:49:04 -0800

The Houston Astros have acquired CL Ken Giles from the Philadelphia Phillies, in exchange for SPs Brett Oberholtzer and Vincent Velasquez and OF Derek Fisher. The deal is pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: Giles is expected to step into the team's closer role immediately, with Luke Gregerson moving to a setup role and losing most of his fantasy value. The 25-year-old right-hander went 6-3 with a 1.80 ERA and 15 saves, along with 87 strikeouts over 70 innings. Giles' fantasy value will receive a significant boost now that he is pitching for a contender and likely to see many more save opportunities.

Astros | Houston pitchers available?

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 10:30:40 -0800

Houston Astros SP Vincent Velasquez is receiving interest on the trade market, and the Astros are more willing to deal him than SP Lance McCullers.

Fantasy Tip: McCullers had a successful rookie season in Houston, going 6-7 with a 3.22 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 22 starts. He struck out 9.2 hitters per nine innings and is certainly more intriguing for fantasy owners than Velasquez at the moment.

Astros | Ken Giles perking Astros' interest

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 09:38:23 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles was the focus of recent trade talks with the Houston Astros. Astros SP Lance McCullers and SP Vincent Velasquez were brought up by the Phillies, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Giles has a big-time arm and could be a high-end closer in the right situation. Being on a rebuilding team doesn't discount him as a top reliever option, but the higher win probability helps.

Astros | Scott Feldman to have MRI

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 09:13:23 -0700

Houston Astros SP Scott Feldman (shoulder) left the game with right shoulder pain in his start Tuesday, Sept. 1, after walking five hitters and allowing three runs in just 2 2/3 innings against the Seattle Mariners. He will undergo an MRI exam Wednesday, Sept. 2. Feldman was replaced in the game by SP Vincent Velasquez.

Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on Feldman ($5,700, 11.4% of cap). He was having a fine August after returning from the DL, and he deserves to be owned in deeper leagues if his injury isn't serious. If he's forced to miss a start or two or go back on the DL, Velasquez ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) could take Feldman's rotation spot.

Astros | Vincent Velasquez working in 'pen

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 18:52:37 -0700

Houston Astros SP Vincent Velasquez has been working in the bullpen with Class AA Corpus Christi, as the team is working to limit the innings of the starter. Manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday, Aug. 18, when Velasquez returns to the big club in September he is likely to have a role in the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: If Velasquez does not return to the rotation in September then FantasyScore players will obviously not want to bother with him until 2016.

Astros | Vincent Velasquez picks up first win

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 22:37:18 -0700

Houston Astros SP Vincent Velasquez allowed three runs and seven hits over six innings to pick up his first career win Tuesday, July 21, against the Boston Red Sox. He did not walk any batters and struck out seven.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez posted a quality start and could become a fixture in the rotation if he continues to pitch like this on a regular basis.

Astros | Vincent Velasquez demoted

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 20:58:27 -0700

The Houston Astros demoted SP Vincent Velasquez to Class AA Corpus Christi after his outing Tuesday, July 7, against the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez lost his outing Tuesday, his first career decision in six starts. He might be back after the All-Star break, but he isn't that attractive of a FantasyScore option.
