Marlins | Jose Fernandez dominating with slider

Thu, 26 May 2016 15:39:26 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez leads the majors in strikeouts accumulated by the slider, as his six on Thursday, May 26, give him 51 for the season. Tampa Bay Rays SP Chris Archer is in second in that department with 41, while New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda trails close behind with 40. Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw is fourth with 39 punch-outs utilizing his slider.

Fantasy Tip: Simply put, Fernandez is enjoying a phenomenal season, and this stat adds to the depth of just how terrific he's been. After Thursday's win, Fernandez is now 7-2 with a 2.82 ERA, not to mention while having an insane 90 strikeouts in just 60 2/3 innings. Keep trotting him out there with high hopes every time he toes the rubber.

Yankees | Michael Pineda ends drought

Sun, 22 May 2016 17:36:22 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda won for the first time since his first start of the year, allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out six over six innings against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, May 22.

Fantasy Tip: Consistency has been a major issue for Pineda, but his stuff is excellent, and he has 56 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings. He is worth owning in mixed leagues, but you need to pick and choose when you start him.

Yankees | Michael Pineda drops to 1-5

Tue, 17 May 2016 23:28:38 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda fell to 1-5 after losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, May 17. He went five innings, surrendering five runs on nine hits. He also issued one walk and struck out nine.

Fantasy Tip: If there's one takeaway from Pineda's 2016 season thus far, it's that he's been consistent, lasting at least five innings in all eight of his starts. The problem is, however, is that he's been consistently ineffective, as he's yielded five runs or more in half of those outings. As a result, it's really hard to trust him right now in any format.

Yankees | Chad Green making debut Monday

Sun, 15 May 2016 15:53:52 -0700

New York Yankees SP Chad Green will make his major league debut as a starter on Monday, May 16. SP Michael Pineda has been pushed to Tuesday, May 17.

Fantasy Tip: With Luis Severino on the disabled list, Green appears to be sliding into Severino's spot in the lineup for the time being. There is no word yet on whether Green will need a pitch count, but you may want to prepare for one because this is Green's first start in the majors. It's wise to wait and see how Green does before putting your trust in him.

Yankees | Could Michael Pineda lose rotation spot?

Thu, 12 May 2016 13:18:37 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda could be in a battle with SP Luis Severino to keep a rotation spot, in the opinion of ESPNNewYork.com's Andrew Marchand. SP Ivan Nova pitched well in his first start and SP CC Sabathia (groin) is scheduled to return from the disabled list in just over a week, so Pineda's struggles (1-4 with a 6.28 ERA through seven starts) could make him expendable.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda has been a huge disappointment, but after posting a 5.80 ERA in the second half last season, it might not be that surprising. Pineda cannot be started with confidence in any fantasy format at this point, and it isn't out of question to replace him in mixed leagues.

Yankees | Michael Pineda struggles against KC

Wed, 11 May 2016 19:41:05 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda (1-4) allowed six runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, May 11, with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda has experienced a Jekyll-and-Hyde season, with six earned runs or more allowed in three of his outings, while he has allowed just two earned runs in each of his other four starts. His next start will come against the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday, May 16, and daily fantasy players should avoid him because of his lack of consistency.

Yankees | Michael Pineda slightly better

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 23:10:00 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda pitched a little better Saturday, April 30, against the Boston Red Sox, allowing two earned runs, five hits and three walks with three strikeouts over five innings in a loss.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda hasn't pitched particularly well this season, but he also has received a total of five runs of support over his past four outings. Stick with him in AL-only fantasy leagues and deeper mixed formats, especially for his strikeout potential.

Rays | Steven Souza Jr. leaves the yard twice

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 13:50:19 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza Jr. celebrated his 27th birthday in style on Sunday, April 24, clubbing a two-run home run off New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda in the first inning to cap a five-run frame before adding a solo shot in the fifth off Pineda in the fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Souza's power display was the highlight of a five-homer barrage by the Rays. The 27-year-old is riding a bit of a hot streak lately, although he has as many strikeouts as hits (six) over the last four games. Nevertheless, Souza needs to remain in lineups as Tampa Bay begins an eight-game homestand on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Yankees | Michael Pineda roughed up Sunday

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 13:31:30 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda was equal parts good and awful Sunday, April 24, striking out a season-high nine while also giving up seven runs on 10 hits - including four homers - over five frames in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: The strikeouts continue to increase each start for Pineda, but he has really struggled to keep the ball insider the park at Yankee Stadium so far in 2016, serving up a total of seven long balls in his first and third home outings. The 27-year-old's next two scheduled starts will come against the Boston Red Sox, making him a dicey option at best in all formats.

Yankees | Michael Pineda has best outing of year

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 23:21:29 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda allowed two earned runs, seven hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Tuesday, April 19, against the Oakland Athletics.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda started out slowly in his first outing against Houston April 6, but he has back-to-back quality starts with no homers allowed and a total of 13 strikeouts in the past two outings. He is a must-start in AL-only fantasy leagues and most mixed formats, especially at home.
