Yankees | Michael Pineda posts QS, victory

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 22:07:07 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda allowed three earned runs, four hits and two walks over seven innings in a win Tuesday, June 7, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He also struck out four batters in the quality start.

Fantasy Tip: It was just the second quality start in six outings for Pineda, so he isn't quite back yet. However, this was a positive outing and he could re-emerge as a must-start across all fantasy formats if he can duplicate these results on a regular basis.

Yankees | Michael Pineda has solid outing Thursday

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 19:41:44 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda allowed one run on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Detroit Tigers Thursday, June 2, with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Although this performance was promising, Pineda should be avoided in all fantasy formats until he can string together several more outings like this. He will make his next start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Tuesday, June 7.

Yankees | Michael Pineda given vote of confidence

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 18:33:48 -0700

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi reiterated that SP Michael Pineda will remain in the starting rotation no matter how poorly he pitches against the Detroit Tigers Thursday, June 2. "He's in our rotation," Girardi said. "For me to think about that, I think is somewhat silly."

Fantasy Tip: Pineda is 2-6 with a 6.92 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 10 starts this season. He cannot be started with any degree of confidence in any fantasy format for the foreseeable future.

Yankees | Rays tee off on Michael Pineda

Sun, 29 May 2016 06:44:43 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda allowed six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts through 3 2/3 innings during the Yankees' 9-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, May 28. While Pineda's 6.92 ERA is the highest among 104 qualified pitchers in the league, manager Joe Girardi currently has no plans of removing him from the rotation.

"As of right now, there's no changes," Girardi said. "He's got to fight, and we've got to help him be more consistent with his pitches. I think his velocity has been really consistent, and at times he's thrown the ball really well, so there's nothing that leads me to believe there's anything bothering him physically."

Fantasy Tip: Pineda cannot be started with any degree of confidence at this point, and he likely shouldn't be owned and viewed as anything more than a desperation stash in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats. Despite what Girardi says, there is no way Pineda's rotation spot is secure.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez dominating with slider

Thu, 26 May 2016 15:39:26 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez leads the majors in strikeouts accumulated by the slider, as his six on Thursday, May 26, give him 51 for the season. Tampa Bay Rays SP Chris Archer is in second in that department with 41, while New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda trails close behind with 40. Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw is fourth with 39 punch-outs utilizing his slider.

Fantasy Tip: Simply put, Fernandez is enjoying a phenomenal season, and this stat adds to the depth of just how terrific he's been. After Thursday's win, Fernandez is now 7-2 with a 2.82 ERA, not to mention while having an insane 90 strikeouts in just 60 2/3 innings. Keep trotting him out there with high hopes every time he toes the rubber.

Yankees | Michael Pineda ends drought

Sun, 22 May 2016 17:36:22 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda won for the first time since his first start of the year, allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out six over six innings against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, May 22.

Fantasy Tip: Consistency has been a major issue for Pineda, but his stuff is excellent, and he has 56 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings. He is worth owning in mixed leagues, but you need to pick and choose when you start him.

Yankees | Michael Pineda drops to 1-5

Tue, 17 May 2016 23:28:38 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda fell to 1-5 after losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, May 17. He went five innings, surrendering five runs on nine hits. He also issued one walk and struck out nine.

Fantasy Tip: If there's one takeaway from Pineda's 2016 season thus far, it's that he's been consistent, lasting at least five innings in all eight of his starts. The problem is, however, is that he's been consistently ineffective, as he's yielded five runs or more in half of those outings. As a result, it's really hard to trust him right now in any format.

Yankees | Chad Green making debut Monday

Sun, 15 May 2016 15:53:52 -0700

New York Yankees SP Chad Green will make his major league debut as a starter on Monday, May 16. SP Michael Pineda has been pushed to Tuesday, May 17.

Fantasy Tip: With Luis Severino on the disabled list, Green appears to be sliding into Severino's spot in the lineup for the time being. There is no word yet on whether Green will need a pitch count, but you may want to prepare for one because this is Green's first start in the majors. It's wise to wait and see how Green does before putting your trust in him.

Yankees | Could Michael Pineda lose rotation spot?

Thu, 12 May 2016 13:18:37 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda could be in a battle with SP Luis Severino to keep a rotation spot, in the opinion of ESPNNewYork.com's Andrew Marchand. SP Ivan Nova pitched well in his first start and SP CC Sabathia (groin) is scheduled to return from the disabled list in just over a week, so Pineda's struggles (1-4 with a 6.28 ERA through seven starts) could make him expendable.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda has been a huge disappointment, but after posting a 5.80 ERA in the second half last season, it might not be that surprising. Pineda cannot be started with confidence in any fantasy format at this point, and it isn't out of question to replace him in mixed leagues.

Yankees | Michael Pineda struggles against KC

Wed, 11 May 2016 19:41:05 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda (1-4) allowed six runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, May 11, with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda has experienced a Jekyll-and-Hyde season, with six earned runs or more allowed in three of his outings, while he has allowed just two earned runs in each of his other four starts. His next start will come against the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday, May 16, and daily fantasy players should avoid him because of his lack of consistency.
