Astros | Luis Valbuena, Jon Singleton to have big roles

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 16:31:05 -0800

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena will play every day next year either at third base or first base, according to general manager Jeff Luhnow. Luhnow also said first base was 1B Jon Singleton's position to lose.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena was all or nothing in 2015, hitting just .224 but slugging 25 home runs in 434 at-bats. He's not guaranteed 20-plus homers again in Houston, and he's best utilized for his power in deeper mixed leagues. Singleton has yet to hit above .200 in his two limited seasons in the bigs, but he still has plenty of upside, mainly with his power. He's worth a low-cost investment in deeper leagues at the tail end of drafts.

Astros | Jon Singleton back in the majors

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 09:21:51 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Jon Singleton was called up from the minors Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Singleton is one of Houston's more promising young players, but he hasn't panned out in the majors so far after hitting only .205 (9-for-44) with one home run and six RBI when he was called up earlier this year. With the 'Stros battling for a playoff spot and time running out in the regular season, it's unlikely we'll see much of Singleton this time around.

Astros | Jon Singleton heading back to minors

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 10:38:23 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Jon Singleton will be optioned back to the minors Friday, July 31.

Fantasy Tip: Singleton ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) struggled again in his second taste of the big leagues, going 9-for-44 (.205) with one home run and six RBI. He still has power upside at the major league level, but owners will need to be patient. He's only worth holding in dynasty leagues. Even with Singleton gone, Chris Carter could lose playing time now that Jed Lowrie is back on the active roster.

Astros | Chris Carter not playing

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 15:42:07 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 29. 1B Jon Singleton is starting at first base and is hitting eighth against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards.

Fantasy Tip: Singleton ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has yet again struggled to transition to the majors, as he has only seven hits in 41 at-bats (.171 average) with no home runs and 16 strikeouts. He'll continue to be a low-end first base pick on FantasyScore, especially with inconsistent playing time off the bench.

Astros | Marwin Gonzalez starting at first base

Sun, 26 Jul 2015 09:12:01 -0700

Houston Astros SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at first base and batting seventh against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Sunday, July 26. 1Bs Chris Carter and Jon Singleton are not in the starting lineup Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) stands as a sneaky source of cap relief at FantasyScore Sunday. While his production is modest (.267/.300/.438 with 27 runs, seven home runs and 22 RBI over 222 plate appearances), Ventura ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) has struggled (6.21 ERA over his past six starts), so the Astros have a chance to score plenty Sunday.

Astros | Chris Carter sitting out

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 14:02:41 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is not in the starting lineup against Kansas City Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie Friday, July 24. 1B Jon Singleton will start at first base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Carter ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) likely is receiving a day off and should return to the lineup soon. Singleton ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is hitting .184 with four RBI this season and is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Astros | Chris Carter out of the lineup

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 13:42:19 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is not in the starting lineup against Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly Wednesday, July 22. 1B Jon Singleton will start at first base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Carter ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) likely is receiving a day off and should return to the lineup soon. Singleton ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is hitting only .167 this season and is not the best option for owners on FantasyScore to consider.

Astros | Jon Singleton starting

Sat, 18 Jul 2015 13:27:38 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Jon Singleton is starting at first base and hitting eighth in the order Saturday, July 18, against the Texas Rangers and RHP Colby Lewis. 1B Chris Carter (ankle) is out of the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Singleton ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has a horrendous 42.4% strikeout rate through 33 plate appearances in the majors this season, but the power upside is clearly there, as he had hit 17 home runs at Class AAA this season. Singleton can be used in GPP tournaments on FantasyScore when he faces right-handed pitching.

Astros | Chris Carter has sprained ankle

Fri, 17 Jul 2015 18:27:18 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter (ankle) left the game against the Texas Rangers Friday, July 17, because of a right ankle sprain. He suffered the injury after being pulled off the bag by an errant throw from 2B Jose Altuve on SS Elvis Andrus' infield single during the second inning. He was replaced in the game by 1B Jon Singleton.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Singleton ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) to receive regular playing time at first base if Carter ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) is sidelined for an extended period. Singleton was 3-for-25 with three RBIs entering play Friday, July 17, and is an inexpensive source of power in FantasyScore if you don't mind a low batting average.

Astros | Luis Valbuena could move across diamond

Wed, 15 Jul 2015 17:08:39 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena has taken ground balls at first base recently and could be moved across the diamond to first base when SS Jed Lowrie (thumb) returns from injury. 1B Chris Carter hasn't gotten going in the first half and 1B Jon Singleton hasn't replicated his success in the minors to the major leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has 19 home runs and is an excellent source of power for home run-starved fantasy teams, but he's hitting just .199 (57-for-286) on the season. A move across the diamond could help him add dual-position eligibility, though, which would make him a little more attractive to owners. Don't forget about Lowrie ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) in deep mixed and AL-only leagues as he nears a return.
