Diamondbacks | Two starters off limits

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 05:00:53 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin and SP Robbie Ray will not be dealt prior to the trade deadline, but RP Daniel Hudson and RP Tyler Clippard could be shipped out.

Fantasy Tip: It appears the timing on this has to do more with when they are free agents. Since Hudson and Clippard are up first (this offseason and after 2017, respectively) it makes sense. Corbin and Ray have identical 4-8 records and don't carry much value at the moment, but future seasons could be different. Right now, these pitchers are more likely to be stashed in deeper NL and mixed leagues.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin takes eighth loss

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 00:46:02 -0700

Arizona Diamondback SP Patrick Corbin allowed seven runs -- six earned -- on seven hits in four innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, July 15. He walked three and struck out seven.

Fantasy Tip: Corbin has now allowed seven, five, five and six runs, respectively, in his last four starts. The only thing keeping his ERA from looking even worse is that six of those 23 runs were of the unearned variety. Still, Corbin's continued struggles make him hard to endorse even as a matchup play outside of NL-only formats.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin struggles with command

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 23:24:49 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin issued five walks and allowed five runs -- three earned -- on five hits in 4 2/3 innings against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, July 8.

Fantasy Tip: That's twice in three starts that Corbin has handed out five free passes, and he now sits seventh in the NL in walks (41) on the year. The southpaw simply hasn't been as effective this season as in previous years, and he's now in the NL's bottom 10 in both ERA and WHIP. Optimists can stash him and hope for a second-half rebound, but right now he's a deep mixed matchup play at best.

Rockies | Mark Reynolds back after a day off

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 12:23:34 -0700

Colorado Rockies 1B Mark Reynolds is in the lineup Sunday, June 26, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin and will hit seventh. OF Ryan Raburn is in left and will bat sixth, while C Nick Hundley resumes his duties behind the plate after a rest day and will hit eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Reynolds, who drew a walk and scored a run as a pinch hitter in Saturday's victory, has hits in each of his last five starts (8-for-23) and homered three times over that stretch. However, he's a weak bet against left-handers this season (.260, no homers and six RBI in 73 at-bats). Raburn has always performed well against southpaws, but there are better options during today's full slate of games. Hundley is riding a five-game hitting streak and a serviceable option in all formats.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin solid on road

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 05:01:55 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin picked up his fourth win of the season Tuesday, June 21, in a 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Corbin is now 4-6 overall and 4-1 on the road.

Fantasy Tip: This is where it pays to analyze fantasy matchups. Starting Corbin in Phoenix is not recommended because he hasn't won at Chase Field. However, starts on the road have been much kinder. Corbin is recommended as a starter but only if the Diamondbacks are the road team.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin drops to 3-6

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 16:16:04 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin fell to 3-6 after losing his start Wednesday, June 15, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, including a homer. Corbin also walked three and struck out seven.

Fantasy Tip: Corbin simply has been erratic this year. He's had a fair amount of quality starts such as this one, but he's also had multiple efforts where he would surrender seven runs. Fortunately for his owners, it appears the southpaw is back on the upswing, as he's pitched more than six innings in each of his three assignments this month, nailing down quality starts in two of them. Still, his continued inconsistency makes him less of a dependable option than he used to be.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin has ugly outing

Tue, 31 May 2016 14:09:28 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Houston Astros Tuesday, May 31, for his shortest outing of the season. His ERA went up to 4.96 and left him with a 2-5 record on the year. Corbin said he was feeling fine physically, but he threw just 40 of his 73 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Corbin's strikeouts per nine innings are down to 6.5 from 8.3 last year, and his command is off, walking 2.9 hitters per nine innings. Those two things combined have made him a shaky play in 2016, and you should only play the juicy matchups with him right now.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin eats fourth loss

Thu, 26 May 2016 15:18:28 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin dropped to 2-4 on the year after losing his start Thursday, May 26, versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. The lefty went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks, while also registering five strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Corbin has been pretty steady this year, pitching into the sixth inning or beyond in all 10 of his starts, but other than that, he leaves a lot to be desired, especially after that remarkable season he had in 2013. Since coming back from Tommy John surgery, Corbin simply hasn't been as effective, and his strikeout rate has dropped as well. He's just a mixed bag right now.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin building endurance

Thu, 05 May 2016 10:11:57 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin's stuff has been diminished later in his outings, according to manager Chip Hale, and the D-backs plan to monitor him for now late in his starts. Hale thinks the issue will correct itself once Corbin builds endurance coming off Tommy John surgery. Corbin missed all of the 2014 season and wasn't allowed to throw more than 91 pitches in any of his starts last year.

Fantasy Tip: Corbin's velocity has taken a dip slightly later in his outings to begin the year, so this is something to watch as we get into the summer months. As he rebuilds his strength, Corbin is more of a shaky fantasy starter, especially since he's struck out only 5.6 hitters per nine innings in his first six starts of 2016.

Diamondbacks | Patrick Corbin tuned up by Cards

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 23:56:04 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin allowed seven earned runs, seven hits and five walks over 5 2/3 inning in a loss Wednesday, April 27, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: It was an ugly performance for Corbin who saw his record slip to 1-3 with a 4.88 ERA. He hasn't been very ace-like and is killing his fantasy owners. There is still plenty of time to turn it around, however, and you should stick it out and not compound the problem by dropping him and watching Corbin get hot with another fantasy owners team.
