Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams was impressed with SP Doug Fister's (lat) 35-pitch bullpen session Friday, April 11, and Fister didn't report any problems with his side or his right elbow. He threw mostly fastballs and changeups, but also mixed in a few breaking pitches. He'll throw off a mound again in a few days and build up to 50 pitches before facing live hitters and then going on a rehab assignment.
Fantasy Tip: Fister could be back in a few weeks barring a setback, and the Nationals will put him back in their rotation immediately. Tanner Roark is the man likely to lose his rotation gig once Fister is ready, so consider him a short-term option in NL-only leagues.

Washington Nationals SPs Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann are being moved up in the rotation to face the Miami Marlins the next two days, which will allow them to start SP Tanner Roark against the Atlanta Braves Friday, April 11. "You certainly want your No. 1 going as many times during the course of a season as you can," manager Matt Williams said. "There's no set plan in that regard, because there are further off-days coming and we just don't know. His workload may get to the point where we've got to get him an extra day. But as of right now, it's on normal rest and we're going to keep it that way as much as possible."

Washington Nationals SP Doug Fister (lat) left his minor league start Thursday, March 27, with a lat strain. Manager Matt Williams isn't ruling him out for the start of the season, but it seems likely Fister will have to miss his first start.
Fantasy Tip: Lat strains can be tough to come back from quickly, so this almost assuredly puts Fister out for at least several starts. It looks as though both Taylor Jordan and Tanner Roark will crack the rotation to start the year now. Jordan is more intriguing for NL-only managers.

Washington Nationals SP Taylor Jordan gave up just one run and had a shutout into the sixth inning in 5 2/3 frames in his outing Monday, March 24. Jordan had a 3.92 ERA in six spring games (four starts) as he competed with SP Tanner Roark for the final rotation spot. Roark posted a 3.29 ERA this spring. Manager Matt Williams is unsure who will win the job between Jordan and Roark.

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark gave up just two hits and struck out seven in around seven innings of work against minor leaguers Tuesday, March 18, strengthening his case for the fifth rotation spot. He touched 94 mph on the radar gun and was locating all of his pitches with precision. Roark is now competing with SPs Taylor Jordan and Chris Young for the final spot.
Fantasy Tip: Roark is probably the favorite for the spot after the season he had last year. His impeccable control should cement him the spot. In NL-only leagues, he's a solid end-game bid for cheap.

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark is competing with SPs Ross Detwiler and Taylor Jordan for the fifth rotation spot this spring, and pitching coach Steve McCatty won't say if anyone has a leg up in the competition.

Washington Nationals SP Ross Detwiler (back) was throwing 94-96 mph during the instructional league during his rehab, and he feels great about his health heading into spring training next year. However, he'll have to compete for a rotation spot after the team added SP Doug Fister in a trade. SPs Taylor Jordan, Tanner Roark, Ross Ohlendorf, Nathan Karns and Sammy Solis are other options to compete with Detwiler. He could also serve as a lefty reliever out of the bullpen.

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark is likely making his final start of the regular season Monday, Sept. 23, barring any last-minute changes or injuries to the rotation for the end of the week. Manager Davey Johnson said Monday that the rotation for the final series against the Arizona Diamondbacks will consist of SPs Stephen Strasburg, Dan Haren and Gio Gonzalez.

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark is 7-0 with a 1.08 ERA in the majors this year after spending time in the bullpen with Triple-A Syracuse earlier this year. He's averaging 92.6 mph with his fastball and occasionally reaches 95. "He really put it together this year, focus-wise, and was prepared for the game and not giving in at all this year," Tony Beasley, his Triple-A manager, said. "It was just a different mindset to him. He was really locked in with his outings. He didn't shy away from contact. He had no fear of hitters. It was just like he was going to get the job done every time he went out there. There was a different kind of confidence behind him, and it resulted in success."
