Boston Red Sox RP Craig Breslow (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Wednesday, April 9, and SP Brandon Workman is likely to be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room on the roster. The Red Sox would like Workman to remain stretched out as a starter.

Boston Red Sox SP Jake Peavy (finger) did some throwing Tuesday, March 4, but he hasn't been cleared to put his glove on yet. He'll throw a bullpen Wednesday, March 5, but it's still unknown if he'll be ready for the start of the season in time. SPs Chris Capuano or Brandon Workman are candidates to take his spot in the rotation if he opens up on the disabled list.

With Boston Red Sox SP Ryan Dempster electing not to pitch in 2014, SP Felix Doubront has likely made the rotation as a fifth starter. RP Brandon Workman will be a swingman, meaning he could be used in the rotation or bullpen. It is not likely that the Red Sox will sign a free agent pitcher.

Boston Red Sox SP Brandon Workman will move to the bullpen to make room in the rotation for SP Jake Peavy.
Fantasy Tip: Workman loses most of his limited value with this move. He could be used for spot starts down the stretch, but that won't be enough to raise him back into fantasy consideration.

The Boston Red Sox may be the only team still talking to the Philadelphia Phillies about SP Cliff Lee. The Red Sox could take on the $70 million left on Lee's deal, and Lee would likely approve a trade to Boston, even though they are on his limited no-trade list. However, the Phillies are believed to be asking for SP Brandon Workman and SS Xander Bogaerts, along with a big league-ready outfielder. One executive thinks there is "no chance" that Boston will part with Bogaerts in any package, though. "That's just unrealistic, to set that kind of price," the exec went on. "This guy (Lee) has so much money coming. I'd bet 27 teams wouldn't even claim him on waivers because they can't afford him. So the Red Sox have to be looking at the Phillies and thinking, 'What's your leverage?' It wouldn't surprise me if the Red Sox really want him. So would they give up one of their top prospects who's not Bogaerts? Maybe. But they're a team that's set up really well for the future. So they're not going to do anything out of desperation. Why would they?"
