Rays | Drew Smyly wins arbitration case

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 10:25:27 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly won his arbitration hearing Thursday, Feb. 4, and he'll make $3.75 million in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly, if he can remain healthy, has considerable upside as a SP3.

Rays | Drew Smyly makes his arbitration case

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 08:52:51 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly and the Rays have argued the first arbitration case of the year. Smyly is asking for a raise from $2.65 million to $3.75 million, while Tampa argued for $3.2 million. A decision is expected Thursday, Feb. 4. Smyly went 5-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 starts last year with 77 strikeouts and 20 walks in 66 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly made an encouraging return from a torn shoulder labrum in 2015, striking out 10.4 hitters per nine innings in his 12 starts. He's undervalued in the late middle rounds and is a nice pickup to round out your fake pitching staff.

Rangers | Texas whiffing on starting pitching

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 11:05:57 -0800

The Texas Rangers haven't had any luck targeting starting pitchers on the trade market, notably for Atlanta Braves SP Shelby Miller, Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez and Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly.

Fantasy Tip: The hot stove season is far from over, so anything can still happen. Stay tuned. Typically, a starting pitcher that moves to Globe Life Park and the hitter-friendly environment loses a few pegs on his fantasy value.

Rays | TB may deal another starting pitcher

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 14:03:52 -0800

The Tampa Bay Rays may deal another starting pitcher before spring training, with SP Drew Smyly and SP Matt Moore among the names discussed. SP Alex Cobb (elbow) will be back in August and several young arms will be ready during the season.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously, the draft stock of Smyly or Moore could go up if either one leaves Tampa Bay, so check and see if either pitcher is traded. Both players are still young and their best years are ahead. Moore could be a sleeper, as he will be nearly two years removed from Tommy John surgery at the start of the 2016 campaign.

Rays | Drew Smyly extends winning streak

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 19:29:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (5-2) allowed one run on three hits over six innings in a victory over the Miami Marlins Wednesday, Sept. 30, with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) improved to 5-0 over his last eight starts. He is not expected to start again this season so he can be dropped in redraft leagues.

Orioles | Gerardo Parra not starting Tuesday

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 12:46:01 -0700

Baltimore Orioles OF Gerardo Parra is not starting Tuesday, Sept. 1, against the Tampa Bay Rays. OF Dariel Alvarez is in right field and batting eighth against Rays SP Drew Smyly.

Fantasy Tip: Parra ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has cooled off in the past week with a .185 average, and even though he does bat left-handed he is only .247-3-10 against lefty pitching. Alvarez is 3-for-9 with a double since his callup earlier in the week.

Rays | Short outing for Drew Smyly

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 20:20:01 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly allowed three earned runs on eight hits and struck out five over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Minnesota Twins Thursday, Aug. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) has struggled with efficiency lately, and he hasn't made it out of the fifth inning in three starts since returning from injury. He isn't worth using at FantasyScore right now.

Rays | Drew Smyly spins solid outing vs. Oakland

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 06:12:05 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts during the Rays' 2-1 win over the Oakland Athletics Friday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: The preseason breakout candidate could still help down the stretch for those who patiently stashed him. Smyly ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) struggled in his first start after returning from a lengthy injury absence due to a partially torn labrum, so bouncing back Friday is a step in the right direction. Smyly is still far from a must-start arm at this point, though. It would be wise to be picky with his matchups and only utilize him against favorable opponents.

Athletics | Coco Crisp is back in the lineup

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 15:47:03 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (hip, ankle) is playing left field and batting eighth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly Friday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has been awful this season, and between the poor play and injuries, he isn't worth the headache in the majority of leagues. After all, he has a single RBI and stolen base and a dreadful .157 batting average this season. At his cap hit, FantasyScore players can do better, too.

Rays | Drew Smyly returns from disabled list

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 09:23:57 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) made his first start Sunday, Aug. 16, against the Texas Rangers since being placed on the disabled list in May with a partially torn labrum to his left shoulder. Smyly pitched four innings, struck out four, walked two, allowed seven hits and five earned runs. He will get the Oakland Athletics next time out.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) showed signs of being a top of the rotation starter in 2013 with Detroit before being traded to the Rays. He showed some rust, which is to be expected, but he could be a good matchup and streaming option on FantasyScore and in yearly leagues. Monitor his first few starts before considering him in daily leagues.
