Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma to start rehab assignment Tuesday

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 13:42:01 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will start a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday, April 22, with Triple-A Tacoma. "I was pain-free with my finger. Everything looks good so far. I think I'm at around 70 percent right now. I still need to command my pitches and get that feel back," Iwakuma said. He threw 35 pitches during a simulated game Friday, April 18, including his splitter. Iwakuma will throw a bullpen session Sunday, April 20.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma will likely need at least several rehab starts to get up to around the 90-pitch threshold before returning. He'll immediately be slotted in the starting rotation in a week or two.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma to throw Tuesday

Mon, 14 Apr 2014 17:18:00 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will throw a 55-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, April 15, that should include some split-finger fastballs. The split-finger fastball is Iwakuma's signature pitch, and throwing it from a mound should provide one of the final tests in his recovery from a strained ligament in his middle finger.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain when Iwakuma will officially make his regular season debut, but the timetable has always been late April. Fantasy owners will want to wait until he is officially activated from the 15-day disabled list and able to make one full start to prove his health before plugging him into the active lineup.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma throwing off mound

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 16:36:18 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) threw off a mound for the first time Wednesday, April 9, since straining a ligament in his middle finger in February, and he said he felt no pain while throwing. Iwakuma threw mostly fastballs during the 34-pitch session and will throw again Saturday, April 12, and will mix in breaking pitches. It's unknown when he will begin a rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma is taking his rehab slow. At this point, he's probably unlikely to make his season debut in the month of April, since he'll likely need several minor league rehab starts before returning.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma to fast track back?

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 18:30:16 -0700

Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Tuesday, April 8, that he anticipates SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will make rapid progress once he begins to face hitters. He might be able to return to the rotation as soon as the end of the month. "If you look at Kuma's history, "he's been able to go through lineups, go through seven innings, with a fair amount of pitches. He's a strike-thrower."

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma appears to be well on target to return when expected, but fantasy owners should wait for him to make it through a start or two without any setbacks before leaning upon him too heavily.
