Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) is healing well, but he'll need to keep a splint on his injured finger for another three weeks before he resumes throwing. Iwakuma has kept himself in good shape since the injury and has been doing everything except throwing. Trainer Rick Griffin noted that Iwakuma's splitter puts more strain on the injured tendon in his finger.
Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma is likely to miss at least several starts in the regular season with this new prognosis. As a result, he'll likely drop slightly on draft boards, but he should still be owned in all leagues. Erasmo Ramirez, Brandon Maurer or Blake Beavan could fill Iwakuma's rotation spot in the short term. Ramirez has the most upside and is the most intriguing for AL-only managers.

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) thinks he'll only need three spring starts in order to be ready for the regular season, but manager Lloyd McClendon cautioned that the team won't rush him back. "He's too valuable to rush back," McClendon cautioned. "We've got to make sure he's at full strength. He needs to be able to go out and throw six or seven innings, 80 to 85 to 95 pitches. We'll do right by Iwakuma."

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) isn't expected to need surgery for his strained tendon in his finger, and he currently has a splint over the finger. Iwakuma will be re-examined by a hand specialist in Arizona in three weeks. His finger was caught as he tried to fetch a ball in some netting while working out Jan. 20.

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will be sidelined four to six weeks because of a finger injury. He is expected to rejoin the starting rotation during the early part of the regular season.
Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma's fantasy value probably will not be affected much because he is expected to miss only a few starts. Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer could be options to be in the starting rotation while Iwakuma is out. Ramirez could be an option in deeper mixed leagues if he is in the starting rotation, while Maurer likely would only be an option in AL-only leagues.

Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik would like to add another veteran starting pitcher. Behind SPs Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma are plenty of questions surrounding the rotation. Manager Lloyd McClendon said he would be disappointed if SP Taijuan Walker didn't make the rotation out of spring training, but he's expected to compete with SPs James Paxton, Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer.
