Oakland Athletics SS Hiroyuki Nakajima's $5.5 million option for the 2015 season was declined Thursday, Oct. 30. Oakland owes him a $500,000 buyout. Nakajima never played in a major league game after being given a two-year, $6.5 million deal in 2012.

Oakland Athletics SS Hiroyuki Nakajima changed out his delayed leg kick at the plate for a small lift in his front foot in spring training this year, which robbed him of the torque on his swing and made him consistently late on pitches. "The emphasis was more on learning and observing the pitches, and that caused me to be more uncertain rather than swinging the bat freely," Nakajima said. He's now returning to the swing mechanics he used in Japan, and he went 18-for-46 during a season-high 10-game hitting streak at Triple-A Sacramento after making the change. The minor league coaching staff believes Nakajima is ready to face major league pitching now.
Nakajima hasn't proven he can play shortstop at the major league level, though, and the team already has SS Jed Lowrie playing there. However, Nakajima has played more third base than shortstop at Sacramento lately. It appears the A's weren't thrilled with his play at second base in late May. He developed a bad habit of letting the ball come to him on defense because of being used to playing on AstroTurf in Japan. With agility workouts and drills designed to improve his first step, Nakajima feels ready to return to the big leagues.
Fantasy Tip: There is no indication that Nakajima will be recalled anytime soon with Lowrie and Josh Donaldson holding down the left side of the infield. If Nakajima does come up, he'll likely serve in a utility role, limiting his fantasy value to very deep AL leagues.

Oakland Athletics SS Hiroyuki Nakajima (hamstring) has played second base during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento. His 20-day rehab assignment ends Wednesday, May 22, and a decision needs to be made whether he returns to Oakland or he is optioned to Sacramento. It appears Nakajima will be optioned to the minors, although Melvin said no decision has been made. "His position is shortstop, that's what it's been his whole career, but he's open to playing other positions, too," Melvin said. SS Jed Lowrie is entrenched at shortstop in Oakland.

Oakland Athletics SS Hiroyuki Nakajima (hamstring) went 1-for-5 with a run scored for Triple-A Sacramento Tuesday, May 14, and he's hitting .241 in seven rehab games.
Fantasy Tip: The A's haven't given any indication that Nakajima is close to being called up to the big leagues, and Jed Lowrie has been playing well at shortstop in Oakland. Nakajima has been playing some second base in the minors, meaning he's likely being groomed to be a utility infielder when he rejoins Oakland. That means he likely won't have much value past AL-only leagues.

Oakland Athletics SS Hiroyuki Nakajima (hamstring) is feeling much better on his rehab assignment, and he'll play nine innings with Triple-A Sacramento Tuesday, May 7.

Oakland Athletics SS Hiroyuki Nakajima (hamstring) will play seven innings for Triple-A Sacramento Friday, May 3, but there is no timetable for him to rejoin the team.
Fantasy Tip: It will probably be a few weeks before the A's will consider calling up Nakajima. The team wants him to gain some confidence and also get some repetitions at second base to make him more valuable. There is a chance that he could eventually take hold of the second base job, but chances are better that he becomes more of a utility infielder at the big league level.
