Yankees | Dellin Betances is the next man up

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 13:59:23 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances will take over closer duties with RP Andrew Miller (forearm) headed to the disabled list with a strained forearm muscle.

Fantasy Tip: Betances has been next to unhittable this season with a 0.28 ERA, a 1.06 FIP, a 0.77 WHIP and a 15.0 K/9 over 32.1 innings. Now that he'll take over the ninth inning for the Yankees, he should be viewed as a top-tier closer. He already should have been owned in all fantasy leagues, but your waiver wire is worth another check. It isn't out of the question for Betances to hold the job for the remainder of the season, either.

Yankees | Andrew Miller headed to DL

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 13:54:18 -0700

New York Yankees RP Andrew Miller (forearm) is headed to the disabled list with a strained forearm muscle. RP Dellin Betances will take over closing duties in his absence.

Fantasy Tip: Betances should have already been owned in all mixed leagues, and now his value receives a significant boost. He has been lights out and currently sports an impressive 0.28 ERA, 1.06 FIP, 0.77 WHIP and 15.0 K/9 over 32.1 innings. Miller is worth stashing in all formats, although, there is a chance he never regains ninth-inning duty. Betances very likely could take the job and never look back.

Yankees | Dellin Betances continues dominance

Sun, 31 May 2015 05:23:51 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances struck out three batters over 1 1/3 innings to record his 10th hold of the season during the Yankees 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics Saturday, May 30.

Fantasy Tip: Holds aren't the most common fantasy category, but strikeouts, ERA and WHIP are. Betances has yet to allow an earned run through 27 1/3 innings this season, and he has 44 punchouts (14.5 K/9) and a 0.77 WHIP. Add his four wins and one save, and he is a worthy arm in all formats. Pitching in high-leverage situations will continue to yield the occasional win and save. Plus, those ratios are roto gold. Betances would also be the next man up in the ninth inning if Andrew Miller loses his luster or succumbs to injury.

Yankees | Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller shining

Wed, 27 May 2015 15:03:35 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances allowed an unearned run against the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, May 27, and he still has yet to allow an earned run this year. RP Andrew Miller pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 14th save in as many chances. Betances gave up a hit, a walk and struck out three.

Fantasy Tip: Betances and Miller have both been lights out this year and are a big reason why the Yankees have been a surprise in the early going. Even though Miller is entrenched as the closer, Betances continues to be useful in all fantasy formats.

Yankees | Dellin Betances has toe blister

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 14:45:11 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances (toe) is dealing with a blister on his big toe, according to manager Joe Girardi. However, Girardi said it was a non-issue.

Fantasy Tip: Betances flipped the switch after spring training once the regular season arrived. After a dismal camp that saw his velocity down, he has bounced back to strike out 17 and walk seven in 11 1/3 scoreless frames in April. His velocity is back up again, too, which should comfort his owners, even though he's currently the eighth-inning setup man to Andrew Miller.

Yankees | Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller strong

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 09:57:00 -0700

New York Yankees RPs Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller have yet to allow a run in 20 2/3 combined innings, and the Yankees' bullpen ERA is 1.77 in 71 innings. Betances, after a rough spring training in which his velocity was down, hasn't given up a hit in his last four outings over six innings, and he's looking like his All-Star self from 2014. Betances and Miller both have 17 strikeouts each. Miller has given up three hits in 9 1/3 scoreless innings, and he broke former RP Mariano Rivera's record with eight saves in the first 20 games.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Betances owners would prefer it if he were seeing save chances, they can't really complain about his bounceback after a bad spring. Miller owners are reaping the benefits, but Betances should remain owned in all leagues.

Yankees | Dellin Betances struggling with walks

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 13:33:41 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances has walked six hitters in his first 3 1/3 innings this year, and he did not walk more than seven hitters in any month in his remarkable 2014 season. The Yankees could consider sending Betances down to get things right in the minors, but general manager Brian Cashman said the team hasn't discussed it yet.

Fantasy Tip: Betances is clearly on the outside looking in on the save's picture in New York after Andrew Miller has successfully locked down both of his save opportunities. Joe Girardi hasn't anointed Miller as the sole closer yet, though, so Betances isn't totally out of the race yet. However, he'll need to make mechanical adjustments quickly to avoid a demotion. You may want to consider benching Betances in your leagues for the time being.

Yankees | Yanks to go with matchups in ninth

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 11:48:36 -0700

New York Yankees RPs Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller will open the year sharing the closer's role, according to Joe Girardi, and the Yankees are planning to alternate the two relievers in the ninth inning depending on who the opposing team is sending to the plate. "My thought has been more like with a power lefty who strikes out a lot of guys and a power righty, the lineups just might match up where one day he's the eighth-inning guy and then one day he's the ninth-inning guy a little bit better," Girardi said. Both Betances and Miller didn't excel this spring, and Betances' fastball velocity was down in camp. Each reliever has just one career save.

Fantasy Tip: Those who handcuffed Betances and Miller to each other are rejoicing in the streets to start the 2015 season. Betances owners should be mildly concerned with his velocity dip and poor spring training. If it bleeds into April, though, Miller may have the leg up on the permanent closer role if Girardi decides to go that route.

Yankees | Closer committee official for Yankees

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 09:52:59 -0700

New York Yankees RPs Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller will be part of a committee at closer as manager Joe Girardi announced Friday, April 3, the team will not anoint one pitcher as closer.

Fantasy Tip: Miller needs to be owned in all formats if he went undrafted. Betances struggled all spring, and his velocity has been down. Neither have much experience in the role, but Miller may be in the driver's seat.

Yankees | Two could share Yanks' save chances

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 08:02:04 -0700

New York Yankees RPs Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller could share the save opportunities based on matchups as manager Joe Girardi is hesitant to name a set closer.

Fantasy Tip: Betances has had a rough spring, and his velocity is down. He had a heavy workload last year, and for good reason, he was lights-out. Miller could still be floating on waiver wires and needs to be added in most formats.
