Yankees | Closer role wide open for Yankees

Tue, 29 Dec 2015 11:04:33 -0800

New York Yankees RP Andrew Miller was told by general manager Brian Cashman the organization plans to keep Miller, RP Aroldis Chapman and RP Dellin Betances, and the closer role will be determined at a later date.

Fantasy Tip: Chapman faces a likely suspension to start the season, so he is likely out of the closer competition initially, and until there is an official announcement of who will pitch in the ninth inning it is difficult to project their respective fantasy values firmly. All three will return exceptional ratios with plenty of tallies in the strikeout column, so with the potential for saves added to the mix, there is a lot to like about all three after the top-tier closers come off the board. Stay tuned for additional updates.

Yankees | New York open to dealing Andrew Miller?

Mon, 28 Dec 2015 14:31:13 -0800

New York Yankees RPs Andrew Miller, Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances are expected to form a "three-headed monster" out of the bullpen, according to general manager Brian Cashman. However, Cashman noted the organization is open to trading Miller.

Fantasy Tip: Chapman has a potential suspension looming, so there will likely be one fewer "head" in the mix to open the season, and exactly how the usage is split up will significantly impact the value of each reliever. Until the ninth-inning arm is officially announced, it is difficult to project value for each. However, as it stands, the upside of saves along with their expected low ratios and high strikeout totals makes Miller, Chapman and Betances viable grabs after the elite closers are taken in drafts.

Yankees | Bullpen will have different look for Yankees

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 13:22:14 -0800

New York Yankees RPs Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances will pitch the ninth and eighth innings, respectively, next season, according to manager Joe Girardi. RPs James Pazos and Jacob Lindgren are candidates to fill the seventh-inning role, according to Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman.

Fantasy Tip: The Yankees traded relievers Adam Warren to the Chicago Cubs, and Justin Wilson to the Detroit Tigers, so there is an opening in the bullpen to help transition from the starter to the powerhouse one-two punch in the eighth and ninth innings. Miller is an elite closer entering the 2016 season, and Betances pitches in enough high-leverage situations to warrant a roster spot in the majority of seasonal leagues, and both strikeout batters at a high-end rate. Pazos and Lindgren are not options in yearly formats at this pint.

Yankees | Dellin Betances struggles again

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 19:56:49 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances allowed a 10th-inning home run and was charged with the loss during the Yankees 4-3 defeat by the Oakland Athletics Tuesday, July 7.

Fantasy Tip: Betances has been absolutely lights out since the beginning of last season, however, he has now allowed three earned runs over his past two appearances. Typically it wouldn't be anything to be too concerned with. However, Andrew Miller (forearm) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Wednesday July 8, and he will return to the closer role. Betances could have coughed up his ninth-inning opportunity with his recent slip ups. Miller and Betances should both be owned in the majority of fantasy formats.

Yankees | Andrew Miller likely back Wednesday

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 15:44:40 -0700

New York Yankees RP Andrew Miller (forearm), who threw a scoreless inning with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Monday, July 6, is likely to be activated from the disabled list before the game Wednesday, July 8, according to manager Joe Girardi. Miller allowed two hits and struck out one in an inning of work Monday. Girardi said Miller will immediately resume his role as the team's closer, with RP Dellin Betances sliding back to the eighth-inning setup role.

Fantasy Tip: Get ready to activate Miller and immediately put him back in your lineups in traditional leagues. Betances should still be owned in all formats even without the save opportunities he was receiving with Miller out.

Yankees | Dellin Betances is the next man up

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 13:59:23 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances will take over closer duties with RP Andrew Miller (forearm) headed to the disabled list with a strained forearm muscle.

Fantasy Tip: Betances has been next to unhittable this season with a 0.28 ERA, a 1.06 FIP, a 0.77 WHIP and a 15.0 K/9 over 32.1 innings. Now that he'll take over the ninth inning for the Yankees, he should be viewed as a top-tier closer. He already should have been owned in all fantasy leagues, but your waiver wire is worth another check. It isn't out of the question for Betances to hold the job for the remainder of the season, either.

Yankees | Andrew Miller headed to DL

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 13:54:18 -0700

New York Yankees RP Andrew Miller (forearm) is headed to the disabled list with a strained forearm muscle. RP Dellin Betances will take over closing duties in his absence.

Fantasy Tip: Betances should have already been owned in all mixed leagues, and now his value receives a significant boost. He has been lights out and currently sports an impressive 0.28 ERA, 1.06 FIP, 0.77 WHIP and 15.0 K/9 over 32.1 innings. Miller is worth stashing in all formats, although, there is a chance he never regains ninth-inning duty. Betances very likely could take the job and never look back.

Yankees | Dellin Betances continues dominance

Sun, 31 May 2015 05:23:51 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances struck out three batters over 1 1/3 innings to record his 10th hold of the season during the Yankees 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics Saturday, May 30.

Fantasy Tip: Holds aren't the most common fantasy category, but strikeouts, ERA and WHIP are. Betances has yet to allow an earned run through 27 1/3 innings this season, and he has 44 punchouts (14.5 K/9) and a 0.77 WHIP. Add his four wins and one save, and he is a worthy arm in all formats. Pitching in high-leverage situations will continue to yield the occasional win and save. Plus, those ratios are roto gold. Betances would also be the next man up in the ninth inning if Andrew Miller loses his luster or succumbs to injury.

Yankees | Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller shining

Wed, 27 May 2015 15:03:35 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances allowed an unearned run against the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, May 27, and he still has yet to allow an earned run this year. RP Andrew Miller pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 14th save in as many chances. Betances gave up a hit, a walk and struck out three.

Fantasy Tip: Betances and Miller have both been lights out this year and are a big reason why the Yankees have been a surprise in the early going. Even though Miller is entrenched as the closer, Betances continues to be useful in all fantasy formats.

Yankees | Dellin Betances has toe blister

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 14:45:11 -0700

New York Yankees RP Dellin Betances (toe) is dealing with a blister on his big toe, according to manager Joe Girardi. However, Girardi said it was a non-issue.

Fantasy Tip: Betances flipped the switch after spring training once the regular season arrived. After a dismal camp that saw his velocity down, he has bounced back to strike out 17 and walk seven in 11 1/3 scoreless frames in April. His velocity is back up again, too, which should comfort his owners, even though he's currently the eighth-inning setup man to Andrew Miller.
