Cincinnati Reds SP Homer Bailey (elbow) is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a flexor mass injury in his right elbow. He won't require surgery, and he's expected to return this season.
Fantasy Tip: Tony Cingrani (shoulder) has just begun a throwing program, so he won't be ready to take the vacant spot for a while. Scott Diamond or Dylan Axelrod could come up and take the spot. Both are just NL-only depth options.

Minnesota Twins SP Scott Diamond is showing more life on his fastball this spring, and he has 11 strikeouts in four spring starts so far. Diamond has been using a program that involves weighted balls and unconventional throwing exercises to help build arm strength, especially in his shoulder. "I'm not expecting it to be a huge increase," Diamond said of his arm strength. "I'm just expecting my consistency to be better. Last year it seemed like I wavered quite a bit." Diamond did drills during the offseason four times a week as part of the Velocity Plus plan, created by pitching guru Tom House. Diamond was hitting 88-90 mph for most of his outing Saturday, March 15, but the additional arm strength has helped him produce 12 swing-and-miss strikes out.

Minnesota Twins SP Scott Diamond is still in the mix for the final rotation spot, but he's allowed seven runs (three earned) and eight hits while walking three in four innings in his last two spring outings. "It's the fastball control right now," Diamond said. "I'm not getting pounded, and that's the frustrating thing. I need to change my approach a little bit. I need to be a little bit more aggressive. I'm still leaving balls up in the zone." Diamond is out of minor league options.

Minnesota Twins SPs Samuel Deduno, Vance Worley, Scott Diamond and Kyle Gibson are competing for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, and assistant GM Rob Antony has said he doesn't believe there's a clear-cut front-runner. Deduno, Worley and Diamond don't have options remaining.
MLB.com reporter Rhett Bolinger believes Deduno appears to be the slight favorite because of his success in 2013 (3.83 ERA, 67 strikeouts and 41 walks in 108 innings). He appears to be healthy after having gone arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last September, too. Manager Ron Gardenhire indicated that he'd like Deduno to make the club one way or another following the right-hander's three scoreless innings on Sunday, March 9. "He's filthy," Gardenhire remarked.
Fantasy Tip: Whoever wins this job is unlikely to have relevance in mixed leagues, but all of them have either produced the results or boasted the promise, or both, to be useful in them. Deduno and Gibson fit the bill most, but it's mostly AL-only managers who should be following them.
