|Cubs | Chicago's rotation competition|
Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:45:01 -0800
Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel, who battled through a calf injury and posted a 5.10 ERA in the second half, isn't a lock for the starting rotation after the additions of SPs John Lackey and Adam Warren. Hammel also had a 14.55 ERA in two playoff starts. The Cubs are also paying Hammel $9 million in 2016, and he did have a 2.86 first-half ERA. SP Kyle Hendricks may be fighting for a job as the No. 5 starter. "Those things will work out," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We have a lot of guys that can start in the big leagues and I'm sure a lot of those guys will make starts for the Cubs next year." SPs Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard are also vying for rotation jobs this spring, but none are likely to beat out both Hendricks and Warren.
Fantasy Tip: Lackey and Hammel should have rotation spots locked up, with Warren on the outside looking in. Lackey is a vet that will see correction to his ERA, but he remains a viable late-round option to round out your staff. Hammel and Kendricks are speculative grabs in deep mixed affairs.

|Cubs | Chicago lands Adam Warren in trade|
Tue, 08 Dec 2015 17:10:14 -0800
Fantasy Tip: The signing of Ben Zobrist in Chicago clearly spurred this move. Now the Cubs have more flexibility with Zobrist at either second base or left field. Javier Baez could also be on the trade block, and his fantasy value is in flux right now without a clear path to consistent playing time. Warren will likely be a swing man for the Cubs in either a starting role or as a long reliever. He doesn't carry much fantasy value but could be a cheap matchup play on FantasyScore if he sees time in a starting role. Ryan can be ignored everywhere.

|Yankees | Starlin Castro traded to Yanks|
Tue, 08 Dec 2015 17:04:59 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Castro has a change of scenery now and will be the everyday second baseman in 2016, pushing Rob Refsnyder and Dustin Ackley to utility roles. Castro goes to another hitter-friendly environment, and he could thrive back in a starting role for the Yanks. He's a fine target in the mid to late rounds of shallow mixed leagues as a sleeper candidate.

|Yankees | Nathan Eovaldi unlikely to return|
Tue, 08 Sep 2015 16:59:37 -0700
New York Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) is unlikely to pitch again in the regular season because of inflammation in his right elbow, according to general manager Brian Cashman. An MRI exam showed no structural damage, though, according to Cashman. Eovaldi received a platelet-rich plasma injection and doctors ordered him to shut everything down for two weeks. A throwing program is expected to take another two weeks after that. Even if Eovaldi returns this year, it might not be as a starter. Eovaldi said the elbow pain he has now is different from the elbow soreness he had when he underwent Tommy John surgery in high school. SP Adam Warren will return to the starting rotation to replace Eovaldi.
Fantasy Tip: You should drop Eovaldi in redraft leagues if you own him. Warren pitched well earlier this year in the New York rotation, and he's one to consider adding if you need to rotation help down the stretch in AL-only leagues. He'll be cheap on FantasyScore but is only a sleeper option in the right matchup as your second pitcher.

|Yankees | Michael Pineda out until September|
Tue, 04 Aug 2015 15:58:14 -0700
New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda (forearm) will be out until at least September with his right forearm strain, according to general manager Brian Cashman. Pineda is 9-7 with a 3.97 ERA on the season and went on the disabled list last week. It's unlikely that the Yankees will stretch out P Adam Warren for the rotation, according to manager Joe Girardi. Warren has been a reliever for more than a month, so Girardi thinks Warren can only throw around 50 pitches in a game.
Fantasy Tip: Pineda ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) should be retained in all formats, as he can still contribute to a fantasy pitching staff for the final month of the season. Luis Severino, the team's top pitching prospect, is entering the rotation in Pineda's start and will make his debut tomorrow against the Boston Red Sox. There's a lot to like about Severino, but using him immediately on FantasyScore would be a bold move.

|Yankees | Yanks trying to upgrade pitching|
Fri, 31 Jul 2015 07:24:24 -0700
New York Yankees SPs Adam Warren, Luis Severino and Bryan Mitchell are unlikely to be used to fill in in the starting rotation with SP Michael Pineda (forearm) sidelined. The Yankees continue to monitor the starting pitcher market as the trade deadline approaches.
Fantasy Tip: Severino, the club's top minor league pitching prospect, easily has the most upside of this trio and should already be stashed in dynasty and keeper leagues. If he does come up and enter the rotation for the Yanks, he'll surely be popular on the waiver wire in the rest of traditional leagues.

|Yankees | Nathan Eovaldi to start Wednesday|
Tue, 30 Jun 2015 06:15:32 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Eovadi ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) has a 4.81 ERA and isn't much of an option on FantasyScore right now.

|Yankees | Adam Warren sticking in rotation|
Tue, 02 Jun 2015 07:11:47 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Warren ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) is a fringe starter worth considering in great matchups on FantasyScore.

|Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka to be on pitch count|
Fri, 29 May 2015 09:12:18 -0700
New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (forearm, wrist) will be on a pitch count of between 80 to 90 pitches in his first start back from the disabled list, which is expected to come either Tuesday, June 2, or Wednesday, June 3, against the Seattle Mariners, according to manager Joe Girardi. Tanaka will also be given an extra day in between starts as much as possible. The likeliest candidate to be demoted from the rotation to make room for Tanaka is SP Adam Warren or SP Chris Capuano, who is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in two starts since coming off his own DL stint.
Fantasy Tip: Tanaka ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) should still be owned in all fantasy formats, but he's a much more risky commodity than he was in 2014, and each of his starts for the rest of the season should be viewed as risk/reward on FantasyScore. Avoiding him next week against the M's in his first start back would be prudent.

|Yankees | Adam Warren likely for Saturday|
Sat, 11 Apr 2015 04:44:48 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Warren ($3,000, 6% of cap) could see a different looking Red Sox lineup, as some regulars might get a rest following the 19-inning marathon Friday night/Saturday morning. The Yankees have gotten off to a slow start but this may be one of those low-cost risks worth taking.
