49ers | Torrey Smith ready for No. 1 role

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 22:13:59 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith inherits the No. 1 spot in the depth chart with WR Anquan Boldin no longer with the organization. It will be the first time in Smith's career that he is the unquestioned go-to guy. Smith wants to be more than just a deep threat and worked to develop a good rapport with QB Blaine Gabbert in the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is still worth drafting only as a WR2 at best, as he might be a No. 1 on his team but he still has a rather questionable quarterback situation.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert the favorite at QB?

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 11:47:31 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is the "heavy favorite" to enter the 2016 as the starting quarterback, according to NFL Media columnist Michael Silver. QB Colin Kaepernick is "allegedly in competition" with Gabbert for the starting job. "He's loved in this locker room," Silver said of Gabbert. "He did a lot of good things last year and I'd be shocked if he's not the starter in the opener."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's surgeries in the offseason have kept him from taking part in organized team activities, so the real competition under center will take place in training camp. Kap has better physical abilities and more fantasy upside, but if he doesn't show well in camp, Gabbert could open Week 1 as the starter. There is upside for whoever starts in Chip Kelly's system, but neither should be taken as a pure QB1 in fantasy drafts this fall.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert's athleticism surprises

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 19:13:25 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has turned heads during the offseason and he has really surprised with his athleticism. "On the field, I know (head coach Chip Kelly) talked about his athleticism. I felt the same way. I didn't know he was as athletic as he was. Throwing the ball, too. He can make all the throws that you need. He has a really good skillset and we're excited about that," quarterbacks coach Ryan Day said.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert certainly sounds to be in the driver's seat for the starting job, but he still has Colin Kaepernick to contend with. Even if Gabbert holds off Kaep for the starting gig he is nothing more than a QB2 in most standard fantasy formats, as he just doesn't have a ton of playmakers at wide receiver to vault him into Top 10 status at his position.

49ers | Niners QBs similar says Chip Kelly

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 10:53:17 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert are on similar ground, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "I think they're similar," Kelly told KGMZ-FM. "They have a similar skill set. They're both 6-foot-4-plus. They both can really run, which will help keep plays alive. Obviously we're not a quarterback-run offense, but if the quarterback can run, you can use a little of that to your advantage. And they both have extremely strong arms. So, from a skill set standpoint, the two of them are kind of cut out of the same mold."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is coming off a frustrating 2015 season that ended prematurely due to multiple injuries. But when healthy, he has more upside in real life and in fantasy than Gabbert does. Kelly's new up-tempo offense could be a great fit for Kapernick as he looks to rebound, but nobody should be willing to invest anything more than a midrange fantasy backup selection on him.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not falling behind

Tue, 17 May 2016 12:35:35 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is not falling behind QB Blaine Gabbert despite still rehabilitating his injuries, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "[Kaepernick] has a great grasp of what we're doing," Kelly said. "I'm really impressed by both [Gabbert] and him and their intelligence and being able to pick up what we're trying to do." Kelly said he hasn't set a timetable for when the starter will be announced.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is still the most attractive fantasy option, but he may not start, obviously. Gabbert has disappointed throughout his career, but he'll have more intrigue in Kelly's offense. Neither are worthy of QB1 consideration, though.

49ers | Chip Kelly impressed with Blaine Gabbert

Mon, 16 May 2016 10:38:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has impressed new head coach Chip Kelly with his athleticism in offseason workouts. "He's extremely athletic," Kelly began. "It's interesting, the three of them, if you look at Driskel, Blaine and Kap, they're all 6-4 plus, and all can run. All of them are at 4.6 (seconds in the 40-yard dash) or under 4.6, which is kind of rare to have three guys that can do the same thing. It's beneficial to you."

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert had flashes last year where he impressed as San Fran's starting quarterback. However, if he's healthy, Colin Kaepernick is fully expected to be the starting signal caller in 2016, leaving Gabbert as the primary backup or injury replacement. Gabbert's ceiling is a high-end backup if he's starting regularly.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to compete when healthy

Sat, 14 May 2016 17:27:23 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) will compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job once training camp begins and Kaepernick is closer to full strength, head coach Chip Kelly said.

Fantasy Tip: If Kaepernick wins the starting gig, his dual-threat ability gives him intriguing upside in Kelly's offense, and he would be worth taking a chance on as a QB2.

49ers | San Francisco not ready to name QB

Fri, 13 May 2016 13:39:12 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) and QB Blaine Gabbert are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Chip Kelly said he has no idea who the starting quarterback will be in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick likely will be limited during offseason workouts because of several surgeries, so he will not compete with Gabbert until camp. Gabbert posted decent numbers in eight games in 2015, but Kaepernick likely would be a better option for fantasy owners if he starts. Kaepernick appears to be the leading candidate and can be a decent No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job, while Gabbert would be a low-end No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert showing leadership

Wed, 04 May 2016 12:54:41 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has taken control of the 49ers' offseason program while QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) recovers from multiple surgeries. TE Garrett Celek said Gabbert is showing leadership and making good decisions on the field during workouts. "I think he's definitely developing more and more as the days go on," Celek said. "But, right now, we're all in the same boat learning this offense." OG Zane Beadles said Gabbert carries himself well in the locker room and acts like a professional, adding that Gabbert is always studying and trying to become better.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is expected to start in head coach Chip Kelly's new offense once he's fully recovered, but at least Gabbert is playing the part and showing he can be a starter and a leader if necessary. Neither is a QB1, but Kaepernick is definitely the better fantasy option when healthy.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick resumes throwing

Tue, 03 May 2016 19:56:44 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has resumed throwing a "bit", according to a league source Tuesday, May 3, and it appears he will stay with the team to compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting job. Kaepernick was discussed in trade talks with other clubs, including the Denver Broncos, but after the 2016 NFL draft it appears he is now staying put. The Broncos added a quarterback in the first round, as did the New York Jets, another potential landing spot for Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick could flourish under Chip Kelly in his up-tempo offense, so it will be an interesting race to watch in training camp and the preseason. Blaine Gabbert isn't nearly as mobile. Whomever wins the job, they're still nothing more than a QB2 in most fantasy formats.

49ers | Chip Kelly likes Blaine Gabbert

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 13:36:24 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert could be a reclamation project of new head coach Chip Kelly this season. Kelly is supposedly more attracted to the idea of making Gabbert better than drafting a quarterback, according to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora.

Fantasy Tip: It's still unclear if Gabbert will be competing with Colin Kaepernick for the starting quarterback spot this season. If Kaepernick is traded, then Gabbert would indubitably take over the reins as starter. He would still be far from QB1 material, however.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert in the mix

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 09:42:02 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert's size and skill set impressed head coach Chip Kelly, who said Gabbert would be in competition with QB Colin Kaepernick to start. "He's big," Kelly said. "I'd never really dealt with Blaine because he came into the league before I came into the league, but just how big and physical and impressive he is. He's a 6-4, 245-pound guy that can really run. I thought the last part of the season he played really well. It'll be intriguing to work with him, too."

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert has very little upside in fantasy and is only a depth QB in two-QB leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to compete in San Fran

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 10:12:56 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick could be retained by the team to compete with QB Blaine Gabbert as the starter if a trade can't be worked out.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Kaep wants out, so this could be a posturing move in trade discussions. He's a QB2 in fantasy regardless.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick staying in SF

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 09:35:01 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will be with the team in 2016, as general manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday, Feb. 24, that Kaepernick will be on roster on April 1, when his $11.9 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed. However, Baalke alluded that Kaepernick would compete for the starting job with QB Blaine Gabbert.

Kaepernick carries a salary cap hit of $16.8 million this year, which ranks 16th among quarterbacks. He's under contract through 2020, but the Niners can release him in 2016, 2017 and 2018 before April 1 each year befor3e any remaining money in his contract is guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: So it's settled then. Kap will remain with the Niners and have a chance to compete for the starting gig if he's healthy enough coming off shoulder surgery. There remains hope that in Chip Kelly's system he can recapture some of the magic he had in SF the previous two seasons. Consider Kaepernick a backup fantasy QB with upside for more in this offense if he wins the job during training camp.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick open to returning to SF

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 10:42:12 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is more than open to returning to the 49ers in 2016, according to NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport. Kaepernick will be owed a full base salary of $11.9 million if he's on the roster April 1. New head coach Chip Kelly was interested in Kaepernick before he landed the job, but he hasn't publicly endorsed Kaepernick over QB Blaine Gabbert.

Fantasy Tip: We have no idea how this will shake out in the coming weeks. Either way, after Kaepernick's disappointing 2015 campaign, he won't be considered a starting quarterback in fantasy. However, if he stays in SF under Kelly, there's a chance he could surprise as your QB2.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert throws for 354

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 19:55:37 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 28 of 44 passes for 354 yards, a touchdown an interception in a 19-16 win over the St. Louis Rams in Week 17.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert hasn't been spectacular by any means, but he has thrown at least one touchdown in every game he has played in this year. If he opens next year as the starter, he could be a serviceable QB2.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick may not return

Sat, 19 Dec 2015 10:55:00 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick could be on his way out of San Francisco, in the opinion of Matt Maiocco of CSBBayArea.com. Maiocco said it's difficult to come up with a scenario in which Kaepernick and the 49ers agree to maintain their union in 2016. If Kaepernick does not return, QB Blaine Gabbert would likely take over the starting quarterback reins.

Fantasy Tip: No matter what happens this offseason, the 49ers' quarterback situation won't be the prettiest in the league. Gabbert has been underperforming his whole career, and Kaepernick obviously isn't working out. At this point neither would be worth drafting next season.

49ers | Anquan Boldin likes Blaine Gabbert

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 14:45:03 -0800

San Francisco 49ers WR Anquan Boldin, who has seen 31 targets from QB Blaine Gabbert in his three starts this year, believes Gabbert can be the long-term quarterback in San Francisco. Boldin said Gabbert has "wheels" and "can throw the ball with the best of them." Boldin has 18 catches for 223 yards in three starts with Gabbert this year.

Fantasy Tip: Boldin ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has seen his fantasy value been revived thanks to Gabbert. Boldin should once again be a fine value pick in daily formats against a weak Cleveland Browns secondary this weekend. Pairing Gabbert ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) with Boldin isn't a bad strategy as a sleeper, either, and it'll save you lots of cash elsewhere.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert has fantastic finish

Sun, 06 Dec 2015 15:19:16 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert ran for the tying touchdown and then threw a 71-yard bomb to WR Torrey Smith in overtime to give his team a 26-20 win over the Chicago Bears. Gabbert was 18 of 32 for 196 yards in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) is proving to be a decent fill-in for injured QB Colin Kaepernick. It's too soon to tell whether Gabbert will take this job into 2016, but games like this don't hurt. He had 14 incompletions, but a win is a win.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert throws for 318 yards

Sun, 29 Nov 2015 22:10:14 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 25 of his 36 pass attempts for 318 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 12 game against the Arizona Cardinals. He also ran once for 11 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert had a strong performance against a solid Arizona defense, and his confidence appears to be growing each week. With Colin Kaepernick on the Reserve/Injured list, it is Gabbert's job down the stretch. When the matchup is favorable he isn't a terrible mid-tier FantasyScore option.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert has speed

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 15:31:08 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has recorded three of the top four ball-carrier speeds by a quarterback in the last three weeks. He raced to 20.33 mph on a 10-yard scramble last weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) has the ability to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs, but he remains a low-end daily quarterback with a stiff matchup in Week 12 against the Arizona Cardinals.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert solid in loss

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 20:29:37 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 22 of his 34 pass attempts for 264 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the Week 11 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He also ran four times for 22 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert has the job for the rest of the season with Colin Kaepernick hitting the Reserve/Injured list this week. Gabbert hasn't been terrible, and could make for a decent FantasyScore option at a good price when the matchup is favorable.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert starting Week 11

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 16:26:44 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert will be the starting quarterback for the team's Week 11 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers have a bye in Week 10.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert had a decent game in Week 9 where he threw for 185 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Gabbert will be facing a tough Seattle defense in Week 11 and should not be a starting option.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert does OK in win

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 22:49:53 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert was not officially named as the starter beyond Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. "Gabbert was our starter today," head coach Jim Tomsula said Sunday, Nov. 8. "And I don't have comment past that."

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert and the 49ers have a bye in Week 10 before returning Nov. 22 to face the Seattle Seahawks. Whether it is Gabbert or Colin Kaepernick under center against Seattle, it is an unfavorable matchup and neither is attractive for FantasyScore purposes.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert's role undecided

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 19:42:58 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert started against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9, but he has not been named the starter against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11. "Gabbert was our starter today, and I don't have a comment past that," head coach Jim Tomsula said. "We got a win today."

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) was good enough to guide the 49ers to a win, but he isn't a starting option at FantasyScore, especially against the Seahawks if he starts after the bye week.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert compared to Alex Smith

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 10:11:18 -0800

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Geep Chryst sees a lot of Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith in QB Blaine Gabbert. "Alex came here, was very young and played, had to slug out a lot of tough situations," Chryst said. "We felt like Blaine had all this talent, and as a young player, maybe a change of scenery would be good for him. He's really applied himself well in the classroom. He's engaged and active; he's a really bright guy." Gabbert, however, has lost 10 straight starts and hasn't won a game since Sept. 23 of 2012. He completed 82.1% of his passes for 203 yards with a touchdown and no interception in the preseason, but he was also sacked four times.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) will be starting this weekend against the Atlanta Falcons at home with a much different offense at his disposal. There is nothing to like for fantasy owners in any format here.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick could get chance soon

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 19:49:55 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was demoted from the starting unit, but the banishment might not be permanent. Head coach Jim Tomsula would not commit to QB Blaine Gabbert long term, and said he wants Kaepernick to "step back" and "take a look at things."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick actually hasn't tossed an interception in 134 attempts, but that can be chalked up to timid and careful play. Gabbert ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) sounds like he will be auditioning for the starting gig on a weekly basis, starting in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 10:52:43 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert was named the starter Sunday, Nov. 8, against the Atlanta Falcons, according to head coach Jim Tomsula.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) has had very little success in his pro career and isn't worth the flyer on FantasyScore.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert will make the start in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons, as beat writer Cam Inman confirmed Monday, Nov. 2, that the team has benched QB Colin Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) could be a deep sleeper in FantasyScore heading into Week 9 as he faces a Falcons pass defense which ranks 24th in the NFL by allowing 262.0 yards per game.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert receiving praise

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 14:25:37 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has received plenty of praise from head coach Jim Tomsula. "I'm a believer in Blaine Gabbert. I am, just point blank," Tomsula said. "We're building a team, in terms of the on-the-field play and the team Blaine Gabbert, that's a beautiful piece." Gabbert was the 49ers backup quarterback last year and only saw action in the fourth quarter in one game.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert will open the season as Kaepernick's backup yet again. San Fran's new coaching staff may be high on Gabbert and could utilize him to his strengths if he sees playing time, but he can be avoided in all fantasy drafts.

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith was a featured part of the offense during practice Thursday, May 21, connecting with QB Colin Kaepernick on several plays and catching a touchdown from QB Blaine Gabbert in the red zone.

Fantasy Tip: Smith still figures to do a lot of his damage via big plays down the field, but he should see enough targets on a weekly basis to warrant consideration as a WR2 in traditional formats. In PPR leagues, he is more of a WR3.

After another poor outing by San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert, sources indicate there has been some talk about QB Josh X. Johnson being moved to the No. 2 slot behind QB Colin Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: While Johnson would still carry little fantasy value as the backup to Kaepernick, the real story here is how far Gabbert's value may have slid. When you can't even be a competent backup then alarm bills will ring.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh likes what he has seen from QB Blaine Gabbert. "Very impressed with Blaine mentally, physically all attributes that you'd like to see in a quarterback," Harbaugh said. "He's been very good, very solid. (He's) picked up everything very quickly. It's going well. Everything is progressing well. I think you'll watch it when you have a chance to see it today and look at it for yourself. In my eye, it looks very good."

49ers | May go with two QBs

Wed, 18 Jun 2014 10:56:50 -0700

The San Francisco 49ers may consider keeping only two quarterbacks on their final roster in order to use the extra roster spot at another position. QBs Blaine Gabbert, Josh X. Johnson, McLeod Bethel-Thompson and Kory Faulkner will compete for the No. 2 quarterback job, but Gabbert likely has an edge since his 2014 salary is fully guaranteed.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert not a lock as backup

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 09:45:23 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert won't be a lock to be the backup to QB Colin Kaepernick this year, and ESPN analyst and former general manager Bill Polian doesn't think Gabbert will make the 53-man roster. Head coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke like Gabbert, though, and they'll give him a chance. "We thought highly of Blaine as an early entry into the 2011 NFL draft," said Baalke. "He is a high-character individual that will be given every opportunity to develop within our system and we are looking forward to working with him."

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert has shown poor pocket presence in the NFL and also hasn't been able to stay healthy. He wouldn't be a very attractive backup option, even if Kaepernick were injured and missed significant time in 2014.

Jaguars | Chad Henne re-signs

Fri, 07 Mar 2014 10:34:20 -0800

The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed QB Chad Henne to an undisclosed two-year deal Friday, March 7.

Fantasy Tip: This won't preclude the Jags from drafting a quarterback with their third overall pick in this year's draft or searching for a capable QB to compete with Henne in free agency, but it makes that need less pressing. Henne returning likely means Blaine Gabbert is done in Jacksonville, however.

Jaguars | Blaine Gabbert likely done in Jacksonville

Sat, 01 Feb 2014 17:55:34 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert is unlikely to be back with the team, as they have made it known they would like to re-sign QB Chad Henne, and plan to draft at least one, or perhaps two, quarterbacks in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Jaguars | Not giving up on Blaine Gabbert

Tue, 07 Jan 2014 11:51:38 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said he saw improvement in QB Blaine Gabbert in the second half of the season despite the fact that the team went with QB Chad Henne down the stretch. "I feel like you certainly see a nice evolution," Fisch said. "Of course, it's different playing games, but I do think his maturity level showed through. We could have been a storyline and we weren't. When you make a change in the starting quarterback, that can happen. He handled himself in such a professional manner that maybe there was growth from a maturity standpoint for him." There is speculation that Gabbert will be traded or released this offseason, but general manager Dave Caldwell said he would like Gabbert to return and compete for the job.
