49ers | Torrey Smith ready for No. 1 role

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 22:13:59 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith inherits the No. 1 spot in the depth chart with WR Anquan Boldin no longer with the organization. It will be the first time in Smith's career that he is the unquestioned go-to guy. Smith wants to be more than just a deep threat and worked to develop a good rapport with QB Blaine Gabbert in the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is still worth drafting only as a WR2 at best, as he might be a No. 1 on his team but he still has a rather questionable quarterback situation.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert the favorite at QB?

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 11:47:31 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is the "heavy favorite" to enter the 2016 as the starting quarterback, according to NFL Media columnist Michael Silver. QB Colin Kaepernick is "allegedly in competition" with Gabbert for the starting job. "He's loved in this locker room," Silver said of Gabbert. "He did a lot of good things last year and I'd be shocked if he's not the starter in the opener."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's surgeries in the offseason have kept him from taking part in organized team activities, so the real competition under center will take place in training camp. Kap has better physical abilities and more fantasy upside, but if he doesn't show well in camp, Gabbert could open Week 1 as the starter. There is upside for whoever starts in Chip Kelly's system, but neither should be taken as a pure QB1 in fantasy drafts this fall.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert's athleticism surprises

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 19:13:25 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has turned heads during the offseason and he has really surprised with his athleticism. "On the field, I know (head coach Chip Kelly) talked about his athleticism. I felt the same way. I didn't know he was as athletic as he was. Throwing the ball, too. He can make all the throws that you need. He has a really good skillset and we're excited about that," quarterbacks coach Ryan Day said.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert certainly sounds to be in the driver's seat for the starting job, but he still has Colin Kaepernick to contend with. Even if Gabbert holds off Kaep for the starting gig he is nothing more than a QB2 in most standard fantasy formats, as he just doesn't have a ton of playmakers at wide receiver to vault him into Top 10 status at his position.

49ers | Niners QBs similar says Chip Kelly

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 10:53:17 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert are on similar ground, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "I think they're similar," Kelly told KGMZ-FM. "They have a similar skill set. They're both 6-foot-4-plus. They both can really run, which will help keep plays alive. Obviously we're not a quarterback-run offense, but if the quarterback can run, you can use a little of that to your advantage. And they both have extremely strong arms. So, from a skill set standpoint, the two of them are kind of cut out of the same mold."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is coming off a frustrating 2015 season that ended prematurely due to multiple injuries. But when healthy, he has more upside in real life and in fantasy than Gabbert does. Kelly's new up-tempo offense could be a great fit for Kapernick as he looks to rebound, but nobody should be willing to invest anything more than a midrange fantasy backup selection on him.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not falling behind

Tue, 17 May 2016 12:35:35 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is not falling behind QB Blaine Gabbert despite still rehabilitating his injuries, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "[Kaepernick] has a great grasp of what we're doing," Kelly said. "I'm really impressed by both [Gabbert] and him and their intelligence and being able to pick up what we're trying to do." Kelly said he hasn't set a timetable for when the starter will be announced.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is still the most attractive fantasy option, but he may not start, obviously. Gabbert has disappointed throughout his career, but he'll have more intrigue in Kelly's offense. Neither are worthy of QB1 consideration, though.

49ers | Chip Kelly impressed with Blaine Gabbert

Mon, 16 May 2016 10:38:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has impressed new head coach Chip Kelly with his athleticism in offseason workouts. "He's extremely athletic," Kelly began. "It's interesting, the three of them, if you look at Driskel, Blaine and Kap, they're all 6-4 plus, and all can run. All of them are at 4.6 (seconds in the 40-yard dash) or under 4.6, which is kind of rare to have three guys that can do the same thing. It's beneficial to you."

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert had flashes last year where he impressed as San Fran's starting quarterback. However, if he's healthy, Colin Kaepernick is fully expected to be the starting signal caller in 2016, leaving Gabbert as the primary backup or injury replacement. Gabbert's ceiling is a high-end backup if he's starting regularly.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to compete when healthy

Sat, 14 May 2016 17:27:23 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) will compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job once training camp begins and Kaepernick is closer to full strength, head coach Chip Kelly said.

Fantasy Tip: If Kaepernick wins the starting gig, his dual-threat ability gives him intriguing upside in Kelly's offense, and he would be worth taking a chance on as a QB2.

49ers | San Francisco not ready to name QB

Fri, 13 May 2016 13:39:12 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) and QB Blaine Gabbert are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Chip Kelly said he has no idea who the starting quarterback will be in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick likely will be limited during offseason workouts because of several surgeries, so he will not compete with Gabbert until camp. Gabbert posted decent numbers in eight games in 2015, but Kaepernick likely would be a better option for fantasy owners if he starts. Kaepernick appears to be the leading candidate and can be a decent No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job, while Gabbert would be a low-end No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert showing leadership

Wed, 04 May 2016 12:54:41 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has taken control of the 49ers' offseason program while QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) recovers from multiple surgeries. TE Garrett Celek said Gabbert is showing leadership and making good decisions on the field during workouts. "I think he's definitely developing more and more as the days go on," Celek said. "But, right now, we're all in the same boat learning this offense." OG Zane Beadles said Gabbert carries himself well in the locker room and acts like a professional, adding that Gabbert is always studying and trying to become better.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is expected to start in head coach Chip Kelly's new offense once he's fully recovered, but at least Gabbert is playing the part and showing he can be a starter and a leader if necessary. Neither is a QB1, but Kaepernick is definitely the better fantasy option when healthy.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick resumes throwing

Tue, 03 May 2016 19:56:44 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has resumed throwing a "bit", according to a league source Tuesday, May 3, and it appears he will stay with the team to compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting job. Kaepernick was discussed in trade talks with other clubs, including the Denver Broncos, but after the 2016 NFL draft it appears he is now staying put. The Broncos added a quarterback in the first round, as did the New York Jets, another potential landing spot for Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick could flourish under Chip Kelly in his up-tempo offense, so it will be an interesting race to watch in training camp and the preseason. Blaine Gabbert isn't nearly as mobile. Whomever wins the job, they're still nothing more than a QB2 in most fantasy formats.
