Cardinals | Ryan Williams to receive a chance

Mon, 24 Feb 2014 05:56:22 -0800

The Arizona Cardinals will give RB Ryan Williams a chance to make the team in camp, but he's no lock. He missed the entire preseason due to injury last year and was a healthy scratch all 16 games. "It's very hard to become a player during the season when you miss the entire preseason," head coach Bruce Arians said. "He did impressive things on the scout team. The big thing, he came to work every day. The consistency of showing up to work every day - that will be the big thing for him in training camp this year."

Cardinals | Ryan Williams disappointed, but hopeful

Fri, 25 Oct 2013 19:49:44 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Ryan Williams is disappointed he hasn't played yet this season, and he remains patient and hopeful he'll finally be active in Week 8 with RB Rashard Mendenhall (toe) doubtful to play. "I have no answers for anything," Williams said Friday, Oct. 25. "I don't know. I don't know what is going to happen this Sunday. We'll see what happens on Sunday. I just approach every day like I have been doing. Continue to work hard in practice and whenever they tell me I get to go as a definite I will go." Head coach Bruce Arians said Williams has been inactive because of his lack of playing special teams.

Cardinals | Rashard Mendenhall doubtful

Fri, 25 Oct 2013 12:36:46 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Rashard Mendenhall (toe) is listed as doubtful for Week 8. RB Andre Ellington likely will start at running back with RB Stepfan Taylor being the No. 2 running back. Head coach Bruce Arians said RB Ryan Williams could be active for the game, but that would be a game-time decision.

Fantasy Tip: Ellington probably will receive most of the work at running back if Mendenhall is out for the game. Ellington should be seen as a No. 2 running back or flex option for most owners this week.

Cardinals | Frustration growing with Ryan Williams

Wed, 21 Aug 2013 09:43:08 -0700

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians expressed frustration Wednesday, Aug. 21, with RB Ryan Williams (knee). "He needs to start playing," Arians said. "I can't evaluate him unless he plays." Arians cited that Williams has "an excellent OTAs" and was "cutting, running" and then just put the brakes on."

Fantasy Tip: Williams has so much upside, presumably, but he hasn't been healthy enough during his time in the NFL to provide much more than a glimpse. For fantasy purposes, he should be avoided in all leagues until he gets on the field and can prove his worth. It's uncertain when that time will actually come.

Cardinals | Bruce Arians backs Rashard Mendenhall

Wed, 19 Jun 2013 09:53:17 -0700

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said on NFL AM that "there's no doubt" RB Rashard Mendenhall would be the featured back if the season started Wednesday, June 19. Arians is shying away from the notion that this is a time share. Mendenhall is also ready to go after fighting Achilles' tendonitis last year following early-2012 knee surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Hard to believe Mendy turns 26 today. Arians' history with Mendenhall will help with the transition, and as long as he's healthy, he'll take the lion's share of carries away from Ryan Williams, Andre Ellington and Stepfan Taylor. Mendenhall is a second fantasy back that might be the victim of overvaluation.

Cardinals | Rashard Mendenhall clearly No. 1 back

Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:46:10 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Rashard Mendenhall has clearly been the top option in the backfield. He's looked good hitting holes, stable in pass protection and catching out of the backfield.

Fantasy Tip: There's a bit of competition behind Mendy, but his experience and style should make him the top inside runner as long as he's healthy. Still, investing in him as anything more than an RB3 won't be comfortable, considering Ryan Williams, Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington each may still have a shot to earn considerable reps.

Cardinals | Stepfan Taylor to compete for backup PT

Thu, 02 May 2013 18:12:26 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor will compete for playing time this year behind RB Rashard Mendenhall. As The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers suggests, Taylor isn't a very fast running back, but he's elusive and durable. RB Ryan Williams has had serious injuries in each of the last two years.

Fri, 22 Feb 2013 05:21:08 -0800

Cardinals | Ryan Williams worried about roster spot

Tue, 12 Feb 2013 18:06:15 -0800

Arizona Cardinals RB Ryan Williams (knee, shoulder) is confident he can make his way back from a second season-ending injury in as many years in the NFL. His rookie season ended when he ruptured his right patella tendon in the preseason, and his second season ended after the fifth game when he suffered a coracoids process fracture to his left shoulder in a game against the St. Louis Rams. He admitted Tuesday, Feb. 12, that he is worried about his spot on the roster. "Who wouldn't?," Williams asked.

Fantasy Tip: The good news for Wiiliams is that head coach Bruce Arians is a fellow Virginia Tech alum who is very familiar with what the running back can do when healthy. Williams is also excited that Arians has used a zone blocking scheme, and hopefully will again in Arizona. It is a system Williams has excelled before. If he can get healthy, he might be worth a middle-round pick on Draft Day as a RB3 or flex option. He could be quite a bargain if he can ever play to his potential.

Cardinals | Bruce Arians fan of RB

Fri, 18 Jan 2013 17:58:16 -0800

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians is reportedly a big fan of RB Ryan Williams, and he lit up when speaking about the tailback's ability Friday, Jan. 18. Both Arians and Williams are Virginia Tech alumni.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Arians, the former offensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts, plans to ride Williams as his No. 1 back. Williams has had trouble staying healthy, but if he can stay on the field, he might be a Top 20 fantasy option at his position in 2013. At the very least, he'll be a serviceable RB2 or flex option assuming the team doesn't look for help outside of the organization.
