Rangers | Texas standing pat at catcher

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 14:34:58 -0700

Texas Rangers Cs Bryan Holaday and Brett Nicholas will share time behind the plate, and the team is not likely to look outside the organization for a catcher following Robinson Chirinos' (forearm) injury.

Fantasy Tip: Holaday is the best add in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only leagues, and he showed some promise with a .281 batting average and .453 slugging percentage through 65 plate appearances with Detroit last year. View Nicholas as a desperation add in those deep formats for now, but whoever hits and plays the best defense will likely see the bulk of starts.

Rangers | Robinson Chirinos remains the starter

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 09:48:38 -0700

Texas Rangers C Robinson Chirinos remains the starting catcher after the team added C Bryan Holaday, according to manager Jeff Banister.

Fantasy Tip: Chirinos hit 10 homers last season, but that's about all that he did fantasy-wise. He's an AL-only second catcher.

Rangers | Bryan Holaday acquire to back up

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 21:26:26 -0700

Texas Rangers C Bryan Holaday was acquired from the Detroit Tigers Tuesday, March 29, to serve as the backup behind C Robinson Chirinos.

Fantasy Tip: The Rangers want to limit Chirinos to 70-80 games, so Holaday could see plenty of time in Arlington. However, he is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only fantasy play as a No. 2 catcher or utility option.

Tigers | Detroit could carry three catchers

Sun, 13 Mar 2016 07:18:08 -0700

Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila said the team could carry three catchers on its 25-man roster to open the season. C James McCann will start and C Jarrod Saltalamacchia was signed to be the No. 2 backstop but C Bryan Holaday's play during spring training could force the club to keep him on their roster. Holaday has gone 9-for-14 with three doubles, three home runs and nine RBIs through his first six exhibition games.

Fantasy Tip: Out of these three, only McCann will see enough playing time to be worth drafting for seasonal leagues. He hit .264 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs in 401 at-bats last year but doesn't hit for enough power to be targeted outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy formats.

Tigers | Alex Avila unlikely to return to DET

Sat, 10 Oct 2015 12:12:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila said re-signing C Alex Avila will not be an offseason priority and he expects his son to sign with another team. "Right now, (James) McCann is our starting catcher and (Bryan) Holaday is coming back but is out of options," Al Avila said. "Basically, Holaday has to be our backup catcher or he's out of options."

Fantasy Tip: Avila hit .191 with four home runs and 13 RBIs in 67 games and actually had more walks (40) than hits (34) in 2015. Despite his paltry offensive production, he could be of interest to teams searching for a left-handed-hitting catcher who is also capable of playing first base.
