Panthers | Torrey Smith to fill big need

Sun, 08 Jul 2018 18:14:57 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Torrey Smith could have the same impact on the offense that New Orleans Saints WR Ted Ginn Jr. had in his three years in Carolina, according to David Newton of ESPN.com, and Newton believes Smith could help bring out the best in QB Cam Newton.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is a QB1 because of his rushing ability, and any boost Smith provides to his passing numbers will be icing on the cake. For his part, Smith should deliver some big plays, but he probably won't provide enough consistency to be more than a WR4.

Panthers | Cam Newton needs to find a rhythm

Sat, 07 Jul 2018 20:53:10 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is the "hardest player to defend in the league" when he is clicking, according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

Fantasy Tip: Accuracy continues to be an issue for Newton, and his MVP season is probably an outlier as far as his passing ability goes. However, his production as a runner allows him to produce QB1 numbers even when struggles throwing the ball. Newton has never rushed for fewer than five touchdowns in a season.

Panthers | Carolina in the market for backup QB?

Sun, 11 Mar 2018 11:42:33 -0700

The Carolina Panthers are "heavily interested in finding a veteran to back up QB Cam Newton this offseason," according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Fantasy Tip: Volin says the Panthers "simply want an upgrade" to impending free-agent Derek Anderson considering Newton is "constantly banged up." Given the fact there aren't 32 competent starting quarterbacks in the league, it may be too much to ask Carolina to ask for much of an upgrade. New offensive coordinator Norv Turner has some familiarity with Teddy Bridgewater should he not land a starting gig in free agency, while Matt Moore spent 2007-10 with the Panthers before leaving for the Miami Dolphins.

Panthers | No major changes for Cam Newton in 2018

Fri, 16 Feb 2018 11:51:02 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton "doesn't need changing, he just needs to be the best version of Cam Newton," according to quarterbacks coach Scott Turner. "He's going to run - that's what makes him the dynamic player he is - but also making the throws in the pocket, going through his reads. All of those things come from experience, and he's played seven seasons now," Turner said.

Fantasy Tip: Newton hasn't completed 60 percent of his passes in any season since 2013 and is a 58.5 percent thrower for his career, which is about the only thing keeping him from becoming the premier fantasy option at his position on a yearly basis. The Panthers would be wise to let him continue to pick his spots as a runner and have to hope Team Turner (offensive coordinator Norv as well as Scott) can help him become a more accurate passer. Newton will remain a clear QB1 for fantasy purposes in 2018.

Panthers | NFL doing concussion protocol investigation on CAR

Sun, 14 Jan 2018 07:24:56 -0800

The National Football League is currently investigating whether the Carolina Panthers properly followed concussion protocol with QB Cam Newton during the NFC Wild Card game against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Jan. 7. Newton was poked in the eye and also suffered a knee injury after taking a hit to the head from DT David Onyemata. A league source said the injured knee was a contributing factor to Newton staggering to the ground and having difficulty maintaining his balance. He was taken to the team's blue medical tent on the sidelines for evaluation but was not sent to the locker room, as the league's new rules require.

Fantasy Tip: Although an MRI exam on Newton's knee came back positive, the injury was not considered serious and he would have been able to play this weekend if the Panthers had advanced in the playoffs. He should be considered a low-end QB1 heading into the 2018 season.

Panthers | Cam Newton throws for 349 yards

Sun, 07 Jan 2018 17:13:39 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 24-of-40 passes for 349 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the NFC Wild Card Game on Sunday, Jan. 7, against the New Orleans Saints. He also ran eight times for 37 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Newton did it all for the Panthers, giving his team a chance to win against a spirited defense in a hostile environment with Devin Funchess, the No. 1 receiver, playing with his left arm hanging by his side. Newton even left the game briefly after a hard hit shook him up, forcing Derek Anderson into the game briefly. He finished the regular season with 3,302 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and six more scores on the ground.
