Panthers | Cam Newton expected to start

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 13:07:52 -0800

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) has yet to officially be cleared to play in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns, but head coach Ron Rivera is "very comfortable and confident" that Newton will start. "Right now, everything is pointing in the right direction," Rivera said. "The reason I haven't said anything (definitive) is because of that one big thing, waiting for doctors to tell me they feel good about it." Newton hasn't shown any signs of pain in practice this week.

Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,700) just needs to be officially cleared by doctors, which is a certainty at this point. Feel free to start him, but his inconsistency this year should make you hesitant to put him in your FantasyScore lineup, especially after missing last week.

Panthers | Cam Newton probable against Browns

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 09:49:36 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) is listed as probable for Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns.

Fantasy Tip: That means that Newton ($6,700) will almost certainly play against the Browns this weekend. Newton has been erratic this year, though, and he's a pretty risky FantasyScore option coming off his back injury, especially if he doesn't scramble as much.

Panthers | Cam Newton fully practices

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 11:42:42 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 18, and appears to be on track to start in Week 16, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Newton looks like he will be the starting quarterback this week if he does not suffer a setback. Newton is facing a Cleveland Browns defense that has allowed the third fewest average points to opposing quarterbacks this season. Newton costs $6,700 on FantasyScore but may not be the best option for owners.

Panthers | Cam Newton not dealing with pain

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 10:56:07 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) said he is not dealing with any pain in his back but is taking things one day at a time. Newton said he needs to be 100 percent before he can play.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been able to do things during practice this week, so he may have a chance to play in Week 16. Newton has a price of $6,700 on FantasyScore but may be a risky option because of the injury and his matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track to start?

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 10:17:36 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) had an increased set of repetitions in practice Thursday, Dec. 18, and it looks like he's on track to play in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns. Head coach Ron Rivera has yet to name Newton the starter, though, but he showed no signs of pain for the second straight day. Newton has been showing good velocity on his throws and hasn't had restrictions with his movement. QB Derek Anderson took second-team reps Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,700) looks like he'll start against the Browns, but he's been too up and down to trust at FantasyScore, especially against a Cleveland team that isn't too shabby against opposing signal callers.

Panthers | Cam Newton working with starters

Thu, 18 Dec 2014 09:30:22 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) is working with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, Dec. 18.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Newton has a good chance to play this week but owners should continue to monitor the situation. Newton has a tough matchup against the Cleveland Browns in Week 16 and may not be a great starting option in FantasyScore at $6,700.

Panthers | Cam Newton officially limited

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 13:09:56 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) was listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Fantasy Tip: It was good to see Newton back at practice and throwing and running just more than a week after being involved in a horrific car accident. It's unknown if he'll be able to play in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns, though, making him a risky commodity at FantasyScore for $6,700.

Panthers | Cam Newton back at practice

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 10:12:16 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) returned to practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, and he worked with the second-team offense in the portion of practice open to the media. QB Derek Anderson worked with the first-team. Newton's status for Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns is uncertain right now, but he looked to be moving and throwing well Wednesday. He also ran and make some juke moves without difficulty. Head coach Ron Rivera said he had hoped to make a decision on the starting QB early in the week.

Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,700) is a very risky play this weekend against the Browns, even if he returns to action. Cleveland actually has limited opposing QBs to an average of 13.41 fantasy points per game all season long.

Panthers | Cam Newton may throw Tuesday

Tue, 16 Dec 2014 06:16:35 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) worked out on an underwater treadmill Tuesday, Dec. 16, and did some rational exercises. The team plans to have him attempt throws as well.

Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,700; 13.4% of your cap) still has hurdles to cross, but he's really not a promising start on FantasyScore to begin with.

Panthers | Cam Newton's Week 16 status uncertain

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 10:17:52 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) will only start in Week 16 if the team believes Newton can protect himself during the game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. "I don't want to put a guy out there that can't protect himself," Rivera said. "By that it's being able to run out of the way, scramble out of the way, stay alive, keep the play alive by being able to get away. That's all part of it. That's all part of the decision that went into the first Tampa Bay game." The team has a rehab program for Newton, and his status will be determined based on if he can meet the rehab goals during the week.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor this situation during the week to see if Newton has a chance to play in Week 16. Newton could be limited if he is cleared to play, so owners may want to use a different option at quarterback for this upcoming week.

Panthers | Cam Newton may play in Week 16

Sun, 14 Dec 2014 09:40:02 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) is considered day-to-day, but the team is optimistic about Newton's availability for Week 16, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor his practice participation next week to have a better idea on his status. QB Derek Anderson will be starting in his place in Week 15 but probably should not be a starting option for owners on FantasyScore.

WR Philly Brown (shoulder), CB Carrington Byndom (illness), C Ryan Kalil (non-injury), LB A.J. Klein (knee) and OG Chris Scott (foot) are probable. Newton and Silatolu didn't practice Friday, Dec. 12, while the rest practiced in full.

Panthers | Cam Newton not worried about return

Thu, 11 Dec 2014 13:06:27 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) currently isn't concerned about whether he'll be able to return to action this season. "As far as when I'm coming back, who cares," Newton said. "That's not something I'm worried about. I'm just thankful to have breath in my lungs so I can breathe again." Head coach Ron Rivera said the best-case-scenario would be to have Newton back at practice next week, but there are no guarantees.

Fantasy Tip: Newton won't play this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Derek Anderson ($3,700) will start instead, and he's a risky sleeper option if you're willing to dig deep.

Panthers | Cam Newton to miss practice

Wed, 10 Dec 2014 10:19:01 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) will not be at the team's facilities Wednesday, Dec. 10, after being discharged from the hospital. It is unknown how long it will be until he's ready to return to action. "That will be determined really on a day-to-day basis and we'll see how fast the soreness goes away," team spokesman Charlie Dayton said. "He'll start the recuperation process today." QB Derek Anderson was taking first-team repetitions in practice Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,900) is unlikely to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend, so you should avoid him at FantasyScore. Anderson went 24-for-34 for 230 yards and two touchdowns in Week 1 against the Bucs. At $3,700, he's definitely a sleeper option if you feel like being risky.

Panthers | Cam Newton discharged from hospital

Wed, 10 Dec 2014 08:38:57 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) was discharged from the hospital Wednesday, Dec. 10. Newton is sore, but in good spirits as he continues his recovery.

Fantasy Tip: If Newton can't go this week, Derek Anderson will get the start and has a nice matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Anderson will cost $3,700 (7.4% of cap) in FantasyScore this week.

Panthers | Cam Newton still hospitalized

Wed, 10 Dec 2014 06:55:07 -0800

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) remained hospitalized Wednesday, Dec. 10, and there are no updates on his health.

Fantasy Tip: Derek Anderson ($3,700; 7.4% of your cap) has a good matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his skill set doesn't provide a lot of upside with so many other options on FantasyScore.

Panthers | Cam Newton not likely to play

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 13:43:58 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) is "highly unlikely" to play this week, according to a doctor.

Fantasy Tip: Derek Anderson ($3,700) will assume the reins at quarterback if Newton is out. He could make for a nice value play, too, against one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Panthers | Cam Newton has two fractures

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 12:27:16 -0800

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) has two transverse fractures in his lower back, but no other significant injures.

Fantasy Tip: There is still no timetable on Newton's return, but he is staying overnight in a Carolina hospital. It still remains to be seen if he will play this week. If he does, he has a favorable matchup versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 11:48:17 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is in fair condition and still undergoing tests at Carolinas Medical Center. He will remain there overnight for observation.

Updating an ongoing story, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton suffered no serious injuries or fractures in the car wreck he was involved in Tuesday, Dec. 9, according to preliminary tests.

Updating an ongoing story, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton suffered no serious injuries after being involved in a two-car wreck Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (undisclosed) was taken off by a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance after he was involved in a two-car accident Tuesday, Dec. 9, in which his car was overturned.

Fantasy Tip: Without further details, it looks as though Newton could be dealing with a serious injury. Fingers crossed for his outlook. If he has to miss this week's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Derek Anderson would likely fill in for him.

Panthers | Cam Newton in car accident

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 09:56:36 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was involved in a car accident Tuesday, Dec. 9, and he reportedly was injured in the wreck.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how serious Newton's injuries are, but this situation needs to be closely monitored by his owners. Carolina is facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15, so if Newton is cleared to play, he should make for a fine option at FantasyScore at a price of $6,900.

Panthers | Cam Newton still QB of future

Mon, 01 Dec 2014 13:09:45 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton will remain the team's quarterback despite having his worst statistical season to date. Head coach Ron Rivera said it would be difficult and unfair Newton based on this season and the offseason. Newton had ankle surgery during the offseason and has been hampered with injuries throughout the season. He was also without running backs DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert at one point.

Fantasy Tip: This season has certainly been difficult for those rostering Newton, but it could turn out to be an anomaly. He was a top-four fantasy quarterback in his first three seasons and might just need another offseason to recover and reboot. As far as this week, Newton draws a nice matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Then again, he has struggled in previous matchups that were in his favor.

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 10:18:53 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (head) was checked for a possible concussion in the first quarter of the team's Week 11 game but was cleared to play.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been hit a lot this season but will have a week to rest since the team has a Week 12 bye. Newton is no longer an every week starting option since he has thrown at least one interception in each of his last seven games.

Panthers | Cam Newton playing hurt

Wed, 12 Nov 2014 17:13:58 -0800

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot, ankle) admitted that he has been playing hurt after saying he was fine following the team's embarrassing Week 10 loss Monday, Nov. 10. "Hurt is hurt," Newton said. "If you're asking me am I hurt right now? Yeah, I'm hurt. I haven't felt 100 percent in a long time. Is that going to hinder anything or that's been my excuse of why we're on a losing streak? No." Newton hasn't posted a quarterback rating higher than his career average of 85.4 since Oct. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Well then. Newton didn't look right and wasn't his explosive self while trying to escape the pocket against the Philadelphia Eagles. Even though he has a nice matchup against the Atlanta Falcons this weekend, it's hard to justify spending $7,500 on him at FantasyScore when he's not 100 percent healthy. Look elsewhere.

Panthers | Cam Newton not injured

Tue, 11 Nov 2014 14:46:26 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot, ankles), didn't injure his foot or reinjure his ankles in Week 10 Monday, Nov. 10, according to head coach Ron Rivera. "I'm not sure where all that came from. But put it to rest," Rivera said. "He said it at his press conference after the game, he's fine." Newton didn't look right in the loss, and he struggled to accelerate to avoid sacks. He finished the game going 18-for-30 for 195 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's offensive line did a terrible job of protecting him against the Philadelphia Eagles. It's great news that Newton isn't injured, but even with a nice matchup in store against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11, it's hard to trust him for a FantasyScore price of $6,800.

Panthers | Cam Newton looked tentative

Tue, 11 Nov 2014 09:33:33 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton didn't look right in the team's Week 10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Monday, Nov. 10, looking slow, tentative and weak in the effort. Newton finished the game with four turnovers in the rout.

Fantasy Tip: In Newton's defense, his offensive line put up a pitiful performance and didn't give him much of a chance at all. However, he still didn't look right, and he's definitely beat up physically, as he was seen grimacing at various moments during the night. It's hard to trust Newton as your FantasyScore quarterback right now.

Panthers | Cam Newton has another injury

Tue, 11 Nov 2014 07:06:05 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle, foot) is nursing a right foot injury, which could be the result of compensating for the lingering soreness in his left ankle.

Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,800; 13.6% of your cap) has a great matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, but at this point you really can't play him on FantasyScore.

Panthers | No progress for Cam Newton extension

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 11:02:14 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and the team have made no progress in talks about a contract extension since discussing it before the season. Both sides hope to have something done in the offseason, however.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been pretty bad in recent weeks for his fantasy football owners. Consider Newton a midrange to weak QB1 and play him accordingly based on the matchups.

Panthers | Cam Newton struggles again

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 10:56:43 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton had the worst statistical game of his career in the Week 9 loss to the New Orleans Saints Thursday, Oct. 30, completing just 10 of 28 passes for 151 yards with no touchdowns and one interception (he also ran a TD in). Newton posted career lows in completions, completion percentage (35.7) and passer rating (39.4). He was sacked four times and also lost a fumble.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been bad of late, reminding owners that he's a midrange QB1 on a week-to-week basis. He can make plays with his legs, but if his offensive line can't protect him, it won't be pretty, like we saw last night.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes big step

Mon, 13 Oct 2014 06:40:54 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) rushed 17 times for 107 yards in Week 6 Sunday, Oct. 12. Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton was pretty close to being fully back from offseason ankle surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been heavily limited all season, but he exploded in this game and at least attempted to run the ball. Newton remains a weak QB1 on FantasyScore most weeks with some upside.

Panthers | No extension talks yet for Cam Newton

Mon, 13 Oct 2014 00:54:03 -0700

No talks on a contract extension have been held for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton, but the team was made clear Newton has no interest in a "pay as you go" deal like those signed by Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton or San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick. Signing Newton long-term will likely mean a full guarantee of over $50 million and no ability to easily cut Newton after any given season. Newton's management also wants to wait and see what type of deal Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson gets.

Panthers | Cam Newton on the mend

Tue, 07 Oct 2014 20:35:51 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle, ribs) said he believes his ribs are fully healed, but he also said that he is still experiencing some ankle pain. "I think my body is mending up slowly but surely," Newton said. "It's giving me a lot of great confidence when I am thinking about running the football, and throwing the football, as well."

Fantasy Tip: Newton is throwing the ball well this season, but he just isn't the same dynamic fantasy option when he isn't running the ball. He has a tough matchup in Week 6 on the road against Cincinnati, and until the Panthers turn him loose, fantasy owners may want to look elsewhere for quarterback at FantasyScore.

Panthers | Cam Newton had teeth removed

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 09:22:40 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (teeth) had his wisdom teeth removed last Tuesday, but he wasn't on the Week 5 injury report. He had all four of his wisdom teeth removed Tuesday, and he said he's been dealing with some pretty bad pain. Newton went 19-for-35 for 255 yards and two touchdowns against the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously Newton's teeth didn't bother him at all in Sunday's game. He'll face the Cincinnati Bengals on the road next week. It's not the best matchup for those looking to start Newton in daily leagues.

Sun, 05 Oct 2014 10:16:11 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (undisclosed) was checked by trainers on the sidelines after taking a hard hit in the team's Week 5 game Sunday, Oct. 5, but he is expected to be fine.

Fantasy Tip: Newton hasn't looked healthy all season, and as long as he keeps taking big hits, he will likely to continue to deal with a bunch of nagging injuries.

Panthers | Cam Newton's rehab ongoing

Thu, 02 Oct 2014 09:12:47 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle, ribs) said he's surprised that his surgically repaired left ankle still isn't 100 percent. "I'm still in that mode of trying to realize I'm still trying to recover from major ankle surgery that was displayed to me originally as a little cleanup," Newton said. "But I'm glad that it happened. My ankle is getting back and is feeling stronger than ever and hopefully I will be able to display my running talents here soon."

Newton has only run four times for 14 yards in the last two weeks, and he's run eight times for 33 yards in three games, accounting for just one percent of the rushing offense. In his first three seasons, he accounted for 33.1 percent of the rushing offense. Head coach Ron Rivera said the play calling has been different because of Newton's limitations, and Rivera said Newton's rib injuries set back his rehab on his ankle.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's fantasy value has taken a hit because of his inability to use his legs for extra yards. Newton continues to say that he'll be able to open it up soon, but until that happens, he's not an intriguing FantasyScore play.

Panthers | Cam Newton to be more involved

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 11:22:42 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is getting healthy enough for the team to expand their offense, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton has only rushed for 33 yards on eight carries in the last three games but accounted for 31.1 percent of the team's rushing yards in the past three seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been slowed by injured ribs and an offseason ankle surgery so far this season but could have more of an impact if he regains his ability to run. Owners may want to wait on using Newton until they see how he performs in the expanded offense.

Panthers | Cam Newton took shot to knee

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 07:34:46 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (knee) took a hit to his knees late in the game Sunday, Sept. 21, and came up limping. He said after the game that he felt fine.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been ineffective running the ball, in large part due to his recovery from offseason ankle surgery. He's a questionable start except in good matchups due to his inability to run the ball at this point.

Panthers | Cam Newton won't be 100 percent

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 06:25:48 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs, ankle) is unlikely to be 100 percent the rest of the season. He experiences pain the night after the games and receives treatment the next two days in hopes of practicing every Wednesday. Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton's ankle bothered him more than the ribs. However, Newton said neither injury was worse than the other.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's rushing yardage could be limited this season due to his ailments. However, he remains a low-end QB1 option each week.

Panthers | Cam Newton sore

Tue, 16 Sep 2014 10:16:52 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was dealing with a bit of soreness in his foot after the Week 2 game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. However, Rivera thinks it's a good sign after Newton had offseason ankle surgery back in March. "Because it's more sore than his back," Rivera said. "Which is good. At least, I think it's good. He's moving around pretty good and he's feeling pretty good about himself."

Fantasy Tip: Newton's ankle is a minor concern, and his ribs didn't appear to be a problem at all in his first game of the 2014 season. Continue to start him as you would otherwise.

Panthers | Cam Newton plays well in return

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 20:34:57 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) completed 22 of his 34 pass attempts for 281 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions in the Week 2 win against the Detroit Lions. He also ran four times for 19 yards. "I felt like I was getting antsy early on and that comes from a lack of playing time," Newton said Sunday, Sept. 14. "I was getting my feet back under me and as the game went on I started feeling more comfortable and it showed."

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) was in full pads for practice Wednesday, Sept. 10, indicating that he should return to action in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions after missing the season opener.

Fantasy Tip: If Newton starts, he should be in all standard fantasy lineups. Starting him at FantasyScore for a price of $6,200 (12.4% of cap) is a dice roll, though, even against a thin Detroit Lions secondary.
