Panthers | Cam Newton lifted late in loss

Sun, 24 Sep 2017 13:36:22 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed just 17 of his 26 pass attempts for 167 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in Week 3 against the Saints and he was lifted late in the blowout loss.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was able to salvage the stat line with a rushing touchdown, but it certainly wasn't the breakout performance fantasy owners were expecting against a giving pass defense. Newton has struggled through three games and the Panthers offense has looked disjointed. He is fading as a QB1 option in fantasy leagues and needs a big performance in Week 4 at New England.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to play

Sun, 24 Sep 2017 05:35:36 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder, ankle) is expected to play in Week 3's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was a limited participant in practice throughout the week and was listed as questionable on the injury report. Despite his sluggish start to the 2017 campaign, he should be viewed as a QB1 in all fantasy formats, given a highly favorable matchup against a New Orleans defense that has allowed 65 points over their first two games.

Panthers | Cam Newton still limited

Thu, 21 Sep 2017 12:07:03 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder, ankle) remained limited in practice Thursday, Sept. 21.

Fantasy Tip: This is the game for Newton to break out in 2017. The New Orleans Saints are arguably the worst pass defense in the NFL. If Newton can't achieve a QB1 outing in Week 3 then it's time to start questioning his season-long value.

Panthers | Cam Newton limited Wednesday

Wed, 20 Sep 2017 12:25:37 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder, ankle) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 20.

Fantasy Tip: As long as Newton is healthy enough to play then he'll be in QB1 territory. Newton and the Panthers face a New Orleans Saints defense that has allowed 32.5 points per game in its first two games.

Panthers | Cam Newton accounts for zero TDs

Sun, 17 Sep 2017 15:48:25 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 20 of his 32 pass attempts for 228 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 2 against the Bills while posting five runs for 27 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was shaken up briefly in the game, as it appears he took an inadvertent knee to the head on one of his rush attempts, but he did not miss any snaps. He is off to a poor start for his fantasy owners so far, as the Carolina offense has totaled just two touchdowns through two games. Things should be a little more wide open in Week 3 against the defensively challenged Saints.

Panthers | Cam Newton back on the field

Sun, 17 Sep 2017 12:24:47 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) returned to the team's Week 2 game even though he suffered an ankle injury earlier in the game.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Newton is dealing with a minor injury and likely will be able to finish the game. He could miss some practice time this week but appears to have a good chance in Week 3. Newton should be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback against most opponents.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (leg) suffered an apparent left leg injury during the team's Week 2 game but was able to walk off the field.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Newton will miss any additional time because of the injury. Newton has been off to a solid start this season and could be a low-end No. 1 quarterback if he is healthy.

Panthers | Cam Newton ready for Week 2

Fri, 15 Sep 2017 14:50:52 -0700

Cam Newton QB Cam Newton (shoulder) practiced in full Friday, Sept. 15, and is off the injury report for Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Tip: Newton opened with 171 passing yards and two touchdowns in Week 1 at San Francisco. It was decent production, but not elite-type stuff. He'll look for a better outcome in Week 2 against Buffalo, a pass defense which allowed just 176 passing yards with no TDs and two interceptions against the Jets in their opener. Newton is a low-end QB1 in most fantasy formats this week.

Panthers | Cam Newton limited Thursday

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 11:32:31 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) was limited during practice Thursday, Sept. 14. Head coach Ron Rivera said it was a maintenance day for Newton and was part of the team's plan for him.

Fantasy Tip: Newton probably will see limited time during practice during the early part of the season and should be fine for Week 2. He will be facing a solid Buffalo Bills defense but should still be considered a No. 1 quarterback in all fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton a full participant

Wed, 13 Sep 2017 12:12:35 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was decent in his first game after a tumultuous offseason. His shoulder was fine after Week 1, so he should be good to go from now on barring any aggravation. Newton is a middle-of-the-pack QB1 in Carolina's first home game of 2017.

Panthers | Cam Newton's shoulder is fine

Mon, 11 Sep 2017 11:10:44 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton's (shoulder) surgically-repaired shoulder checked out fine after the Panthers' Week 1 win, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Newton officially has nothing and on one to blame for his deep-ball inaccuracy. There was some noticeable rust in his return to meaningful action, but that shouldn't keep owners from starting him in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills.

Panthers | Cam Newton proves shoulder is fine

Sun, 10 Sep 2017 19:50:20 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 14 of his 25 passes for 171 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 1 in San Francisco and he rushed six times for three yards.

Fantasy Tip: Newton didn't have a giant game stats-wise, but he proved that his surgically repaired shoulder is sound and he is ready to go for the season. He'll look to keep it going in Week 2 in the home opener against Buffalo.

Sun, 10 Sep 2017 07:04:49 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will start Week 1's game against the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was listed as questionable on the injury report despite being a full participant in all three practice sessions during the week. He should be viewed as a QB1 in most fantasy formats, although he may throw less frequently as he works his way back from shoulder surgery.

Panthers | Cam Newton questionable for Week 1

Fri, 08 Sep 2017 14:23:38 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) practiced in full on Friday, Sept. 8, and is listed as questionable for Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is expected to play, and he should play well against a 49ers team which allowed Newton to throw for a season-best 353 yards and four touchdowns in a Week 2 matchup in 2016. He could get off to a hot start for fantasy owners, especially with Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel added to his arsenal.

Panthers | Full practice for Cam Newton

Thu, 07 Sep 2017 14:33:08 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) fully participated in practice Thursday, Sept. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is on track to play in Week 1 after sitting out most of the preseason to allow his shoulder to heal. He may not throw as much as he did last season in Week 1 because of the injury but should be still be a starting option in most fantasy leagues this season.

Panthers | Cam Newton is listed as full participant

Wed, 06 Sep 2017 14:13:49 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) went through a full practice on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Newton, who had shoulder surgery during the offseason, appears to be on track to start in Week 1 against the 49ers. He tagged the Niners for season-highs of 353 passing yards and four touchdowns in a Week 2 matchup last season, so he could get off to a hot start for fantasy owners with this favorable matchup.

Thu, 24 Aug 2017 20:08:51 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton went 2-for-2 for 21 yards and one touchdown in the preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, Aug. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Newton did not throw much during the game but was successful when passing plays were called. He is still working his way back from shoulder surgery but is on track to start in Week 1. He may run less this season but can still be a No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton will play this week

Tue, 22 Aug 2017 13:55:13 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is expected to take the field for the first time this preseason Thursday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: How much he plays remains to be seen, but this is a positive step for Newton after a dormant offseason. Newton's inaccuracy is well-documented, but his running ability makes up for misfires. Continue to view him as a QB1 as long as he's fully healthy.

Panthers | Cam Newton to suit up?

Tue, 22 Aug 2017 08:47:01 -0700

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is on track to play Thursday, Aug. 24, in the third preseason game, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is a solid QB1, but he may not run as often as he has in the past. This could give him more name value than actual fantasy value.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes practice in practice

Mon, 21 Aug 2017 15:35:27 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) participated in every drill during practice Monday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Newton may not play in any preseason games but should be ready to play in Week 1. He is coming off a disappointing 2016 season but will have new weapons to work with in the passing game. He should be considered a No. 1 quarterback in all leagues even if he runs less this season.

Panthers | Cam Newton to make debut next week

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 15:58:29 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will be ready to make his preseason debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Rivera told reporters Newton had "a really good week this week," so it appears all systems are go for Newton, who dropped 20 pounds this offseason. Owners should not expect Newton to run nearly as much as he has in years past, but he will almost certainly still call his own number near the goal line and his supporting cast is as good as it has ever been. Thus, he should be considered a midrange QB1 with elite upside.

Panthers | Cam Newton progressing

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 11:28:38 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is "throwing more each day and feels fine," according to a source. He is reportedly on track to play in the team's next preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Aug. 24, however.

Fantasy Tip: If so, this would be a welcome development, even if he is rusty and only plays a couple of series. For what it is worth, Newton reportedly wants to play but the team is said to be exercising caution. If Newton plays next week, owners need to keep their expectations in check, as he will most likely be rusty.

Panthers | Cam Newton to sit against Tennessee

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 10:51:37 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will not play versus the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 19. Head coach Ron Rivera made the decision after the second of two joint practices against the Titans on Thursday, Aug. 17, and Newton did not throw in team drills during either practice. "You could tell he was rusty. A couple late (balls) on the decisions he made. When he was throwing the ball, he was throwing the ball well, so we're not concerned about that. Now it's just a matter of him working himself back into shape where he can go out and take normal reps instead of us having to make sure we monitor him," Rivera said.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers remain unconcerned - at least publicly - about Newton's availability for the season opener, but owners probably need to consider him a low-end QB1 at this point and back him up with another quarterback with a solid early-season schedule, such as Carson Palmer, to protect themselves against a predictable slow start from Newton.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes part in team drills

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 09:06:11 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is being restricted from making deep throws, but he made some passes during a red zone portion of practice Sunday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has about another month to get ready for the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, so there is no cause for alarm yet. Expect Newton to progressively work on deeper throws toward the end of the month before the team allows him to cut it loose in the first week of September. There is no question he comes with some risk, but Newton has top-five upside at his position if he doesn't experience any setbacks.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel working with Cam Newton

Fri, 11 Aug 2017 21:53:37 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) is unable to practice, but he said he has been running routes at half speed on the sidelines with QB Cam Newton (shoulder), who is also unable to practice.

Fantasy Tip: Samuel is a big-play waiting to happen, but his role in the offense isn't clear, and the injury is going to make the learning curve even steeper for the rookie. He is worth a late-round flier, but he could be a year away from making a consistent fantasy impact.

Panthers | Cam Newton close to returning

Tue, 08 Aug 2017 14:27:53 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) appears to be "over the hump" in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Newton is feeling better and is expected to practice soon.

Fantasy Tip: Newton should be good to go for Week 1 of the regular season as long as he doesn't see any setbacks. The Panthers will assuredly take it easy with their star throughout the preseason. His inconsistencies and injury history make Newton a low-end QB1 to high-end QB2.

Panthers | Cam Newton likely to sit preseason opener

Tue, 08 Aug 2017 07:15:45 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is unlikely to play in the preseason opener, but he is expected to play at some point this preseason, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has a solid core around him for the first time in a long time, and he should be good to go for the season. He's a solid QB1, but history shows his MVP year as an aberration thus far.

Panthers | Cam Newton does some light throwing

Sun, 06 Aug 2017 16:30:55 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) did some light throwing with the trainers Sunday, Aug. 6. Head coach Ron Rivera said the trainers told him that Newton did not report any problems after the throwing session.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is working his way back from his offseason shoulder surgery and should have a good chance to be ready for the start of the regular season. The team has added a few new weapons for Newton to work with in the passing game, which should help his passing stats. Newton may not run as much as in the past but will still be a threat to run. Owners probably should consider Newton as a solid No. 1 fantasy quarterback as long as he is healthy.

Panthers | Cam Newton resting again

Wed, 02 Aug 2017 07:24:16 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will not throw again during team drills Wednesday, Aug. 2, as he rests his sore right shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's MVP season sticks out as a big aberration in his career numbers, but there's little question he possesses that kind of talent - especially now that he has more around him. He's a midrange QB1 with upside.

Panthers | Cam Newton dealing with sore shoulder

Tue, 01 Aug 2017 10:55:24 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) sat out practice Tuesday, August 1, after reporting soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder. "He started warming up this morning and said he still felt a little bit sore. Why push it? Why have him throw with a sore arm and make it worse? It made no sense to have him throw with a sore shoulder," head coach Ron Rivera said.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's absence sounds precautionary, but these type reports should be considered par for the course of the next month or so. Although he brings as much risk to the table as any QB1 given his offseason surgery and the uncertainty of how Carolina's new offensive philosophy will affect him, he also brings league-winning upside. Consider him a midrange QB1 for now.

Panthers | Cam Newton wants to rebound

Thu, 27 Jul 2017 10:41:34 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton took his disappointing 2016 campaign personally and said the upcoming season isn't just another year.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has slimmed down this offseason and appears to have a newfound focus heading into the new season. It remains to be seen what actually comes of these new developments, but he's saying and doing the right things. Newton is a borderline QB1, just be prepared for him to miss a game or two.

Panthers | Cam Newton still on the mend

Fri, 21 Jul 2017 11:33:11 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) may not be 100 percent healthy going into camp, according to head coach Ron Rivera. "I know he's been throwing it. … He's talking to the trainers about (how much he should be throwing). I'm just pleased there is an opportunity for him to start off and start off on the right foot," Rivera said.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should be cautiously optimistic here. The fact he has been allowed to throw without supervision is a positive sign in and of itself, but it sounds as if Newton could still very much use the extra month-plus to complete the healing process. It seems highly unlikely the Panthers will expose Newton to much, if any, action in the preseason. Assuming he remains on his current track, however, he should still be considered a midrange to low-end QB1 in fantasy.

Panthers | Cam Newton working with teammates

Wed, 19 Jul 2017 11:41:33 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is throwing to teammates during workouts in Baltimore, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Newton appears to be making good progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery and should be ready for the start of the regular season. The team is looking for Newton to run less, which will hurt his fantasy value a bit, but it could also keep him healthy during the season. Newton probably can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most leagues.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey to work out with QB

Sat, 15 Jul 2017 13:56:42 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey said he is expects to catch passes from QB Cam Newton (shoulder) this weekend and next weekend.

Fantasy Tip: McCaffrey should have a role in the passing game this season, so it will help him to build chemistry with Newton leading up to the season. McCaffrey probably will also be involved in the running game, which makes him a solid option for fantasy owners. He should be considered a No. 3 running back or flex option in leagues.

Panthers | Ron Rivera confident in offense

Mon, 10 Jul 2017 13:37:06 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton may be instructed to run less this year, but head coach Ron Rivera still believes the Panthers will have an explosive offense. Rivera said his goal is for the Panthers to remain a run-focused team without Newton having to run too much.

Fantasy Tip: Newton does need to take fewer hits, and fewer runs, naturally, will help in that endeavor. Cam can still be utilized close to the goal line, though. He's a borderline QB1as long as he's healthy.

Panthers | Cam Newton instructed to run less

Mon, 10 Jul 2017 09:51:32 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has been encouraged to get the ball out quicker and run less often, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: We may not see 45 total touchdowns from Cam again. There are six years of data on him, and the only aberration among it is his MVP year. That's not to say he can't be a really good fantasy quarterback. He's someone to consider after the elite tier has been drafted.

Panthers | Cam Newton's confidence was shaken

Thu, 29 Jun 2017 06:26:43 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton's down year in 2016 was due in part to a loss of confidence in his offensive line, which was hit hard by injuries. A big part of Newton's game has always been his ability to hold the ball, buy time and strike downfield. The injuries to the line affected that.

Fantasy Tip: Newton completed just 52.9 percent of his passes and tossed 16 fewer touchdowns than in his MVP 2015 campaign. His rushing numbers were cut in half as well. As the line goes, he goes. He's coming off of shoulder surgery, but he's expected to be ready for camp. He'll be an upper-middle option as a QB1 in fantasy.

Panthers | Cam Newton changing his diet and approach

Tue, 27 Jun 2017 09:59:45 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton claims he is "hands down" the thinnest he's been at this point in an offseason and admits he has to realize his job "is not necessarily to always be the playmaker," according to Panthers.com writer Bill Voth.

Fantasy Tip: Newton seems to be onboard with the changes Carolina was hoping to bring about when it added Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel in the draft this April. Even though it might be hard for owners to adjust their thinking on Newton, the reality of the situation is 2017 will probably mark the official start of his transition into being more of a mobile - as opposed to a running - quarterback. A return to top-five fantasy quarterback status cannot and should not be ruled out.

Panthers | Cam Newton begins throwing

Mon, 26 Jun 2017 07:42:08 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) began light throwing Monday, June 26, for the first time since offseason shoulder surgery. He threw 45 passes to athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion. "Obviously, it's still not 100 percent, but seeing the ball come out of my hand in a throwing motion was good. When I say it's not 100 percent, I'm noting the range of motion part," Newton said. "Like if you sleep with your legs hanging off your bed the whole night, you're going to wake up and be super stiff. Or like sitting on your hands, or sitting in an awkward position and finally getting up and moving - that's how I feel."

Fantasy Tip: Newton fell back to the pack a bit after his MVP 2015 season, but he remains a high-end option at the position after the elite tier is drafted.

Panthers | Cam Newton still on track in his rehab

Fri, 16 Jun 2017 12:29:06 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) did not throw during minicamp, but his recovery from shoulder surgery is still on track. Head coach Ron Rivera said last week he expected Newton to throw, but clarified that statement this week.

Fantasy Tip: Rivera initially said following the surgery that his quarterback would start throwing 12 weeks after the procedure, which is next week. Newton's fantasy star is dimming a bit as the Panthers want to reduce their reliance on his running ability, although he still figures to generate more fantasy value on the ground than most quarterbacks for at least another year or two. He should be considered a mid- to low-end QB in most fantasy leagues in 2017.

Panthers | No throwing for Cam Newton

Mon, 12 Jun 2017 15:07:05 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will not throw during the minicamp this week, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Newton will not throw until training camp and probably will be limited during practice so his surgically repaired shoulder can heal. Newton will have more weapons to work with in the passing game this season and will still be a threat to run. Owners in all leagues should consider him a No. 1 quarterback as long as he is healthy.

Mon, 05 Jun 2017 12:32:14 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is expected to throw off to the side at next week's minicamp, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is ahead of schedule in his rehab process, but it's unclear just how far away he is from being fully recovered from his shoulder surgery. It's not likely that he'll see much preseason action, but he remains a QB1 candidate as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks.

Panthers | Cam Newton ahead of schedule

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is ahead of schedule with his rehab and expected to throw on the side during Carolina's three-day minicamp next week, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton will work directly with trainer Ryan Vermillion, and it is unknown how much he will throw.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has obvious ability to dominate but a fair amount of risk will be assumed by prospective drafters. Returning from rotator cuff surgery is no joke. The veteran is a midrange QB1 in most situations.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track

Mon, 08 May 2017 17:02:54 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is making progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery and is on schedule for the regular season, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Fantasy Tip: Newton probably will be sidelined until at least training camp because of his shoulder and could be limited during camp and preseason as well. He should be ready for the start of the regular season and will be looking to improve on his 2016 season. He will have more weapons to work with the passing game this season and should be a No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track for camp

Fri, 21 Apr 2017 12:36:45 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is "on schedule'' to be ready for training camp after having arthroscopic shoulder surgery on March 30, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Fantasy Tip: Newton had a miserable season by his standards last season, although his offensive line and the bum shoulder didn't help him much in that regard. While a bounce-back year could be in order, the primary focus of the Panthers' offseason has been to cut down on the amount of punishment Newton receives, which should mean a decline in his number of rushing attempts. If that happens, Newton becomes more of a midrange fantasy QB1 instead of the elite one he was in 2015.

Panthers | Cam Newton prioritized leadership

Thu, 20 Apr 2017 19:54:07 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he played injured last year because he felt it was his duty as team captain.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was a perennial top-five fantasy option at his position prior to last year's injury-plagued campaign. If he slips in drafts, he could end up being a good value pick in 2017.
