Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle), who is expected to play a quarter in his first preseason action against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, Aug. 17, said he still is at less than 100 percent healthy. "The thing that keeps coming back up is, 'Keep treating it. Treat it when it feels good, treat it when it feels bad. Don't be that guy that only treats it when it's nagging. Try to stay ahead of the pain,'" Newton said. "That's what I've been doing, and it's been paying off." Head coach Ron Rivera said the team will not run any read-option plays against the Chiefs this weekend. Newton took part in every drill in practice Thursday, Aug. 14, and Rivera was encouraged by Newton's performance in the hurry-up offense.
Fantasy Tip: Newton probably isn't far off 100 percent health, but he's taking things slowly and being cautious in the preseason. He remains a risky and overvalued quarterback in drafts this year. Without much to work with at receiver, Newton's numbers could easily suffer drastically in 2014.

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 12:49:21 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) is expected to play in the first quarter of the team's second preseason game.
Fantasy Tip: Don't expect a lot in Newton's return to action. Getting him back on the field and in a game situation with his new wide receivers is a good thing for all involved. There are still a lot of questions surrounding this offense that could hurt Newton's fantasy football value in 2014.
Mon, 11 Aug 2014 09:49:21 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) tucked the ball on a read option in team drills Sunday, Aug. 10, and also made a nice run to the right side after being cleared to play in the team's second preseason game this weekend. Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton and the other starts will likely play longer than normal in the second preseason game because they play on the road against the New England Patriots five days later.
Fantasy Tip: It's great to see Newton with the leash off in training camp, and barring any setbacks, he should be good to go for Week 1 coming off offseason ankle surgery. Newton's legs set him apart from a lot of other quarterbacks in fantasy football, but you have to wonder if the lack of receiving playmakers will hurt his value as a QB1 in 2014.
Sun, 10 Aug 2014 19:07:36 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) has been cleared to play in the second preseason game, according to head coach Ron Rivera.
Fantasy Tip: Newton appears to be close to recovering from his offseason ankle surgery. He may not receive a lot of time in the preseason game, but his workload likely would increase in the next game. He should be seen as a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.
Fri, 08 Aug 2014 16:46:15 -0700
Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was inactive for the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills Friday, Aug. 8, as expected. QB Derek Anderson started in Newton's absence.
Fantasy Tip: The injury does not sound to be serious, but it is still bad news because it is one less game situation for Newton to work with his new stable of receivers.
Fri, 08 Aug 2014 07:47:14 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) is not expected to play in the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 8.
Fantasy Tip: The team is likely easing him in this preseason after ankle surgery. He's pretty risky to have as your QB1, but in the off-chance you can acquire him at QB2, he'd have optimal value.
Thu, 07 Aug 2014 10:10:38 -0700
Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) would only play around two series and the playing calling would be limited if he is able to play in the first preseason game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera indicated Newton would do mostly handoffs if he plays in the game.
Fantasy Tip: Newton does not need to play in the first preseason game to get ready for the regular season. He still has a few weeks to get his ankle healthy. Newton likely will be a low-end No. 1 quarterbacks in most leagues.
Thu, 07 Aug 2014 08:21:54 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton's (ankle) playing status for the first preseason game is not known at this point, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Thu, 07 Aug 2014 07:43:58 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) left the field on a cart Thursday, Aug. 7. It's possible he was just headed for some indoor rehab, and he didn't appear to aggravate his ankle injury.
Fantasy Tip: We'll keep you posted. Newton is a low-end QB1 this season after extensive ankle surgery and a lack of proven targets to throw to.
Mon, 28 Jul 2014 21:09:25 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) isn't running outside of the pocket during training camp, but he has been able to plant in the pocket to make throws without any complications.
Fantasy Tip: Newton should be off and running again when the regular season rolls around, and while running the ball increases the chances he will be injured, his fantasy value is tied directly to his ability to make plays with his legs. Newton has QB1 upside, but given the injury risk, it is safer to draft him as a QB2.
Fri, 25 Jul 2014 17:38:20 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) said his ankle is not 100 percent at this point, but it is getting better each day.
Fantasy Tip: Newton could be limited for the foreseeable future because of the ankle injury, but it does not appear to be a major thing at this point. Owners should consider Newton as a low-end No. 1 quarterback that comes with some risk because of the team's wide receivers.
Thu, 24 Jul 2014 09:35:00 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was cleared for practice, according to general manager David Gettleman.
Fantasy Tip: It is good news that Newton will be out there for the start of training camp with all the new faces at wide receiver. Still, with the questions regarding that receiving group, and his own health, Newton should be considered a QB2 for fantasy players.

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 11:22:13 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton will work with his wide receivers before training camp gets underway to try to get on the same page after missing time due to an ankle issue. "It's been more difficult because Cam's coming off an ankle injury and he had to get surgery, so we couldn't throw with him as much as we would like," Panthers receiver Tiquan Underwood said.
"I know we're all going to get together next week in Charlotte. We're just going to try to speed up the process. We're all going to throw -- Derek Anderson, Cam Newton, Joe Webb, Matt Blanchard and all the receivers -- just to work on timing and get that down pat before camp."
Fantasy Tip: Newton and his wide receivers are behind after not getting much work in during the offseason program. This is a good start to help get back up to speed before the full squad reports at the end of the month. Newton remains a fringe QB1 option for fantasy players thanks to his questionable receiving targets.
Thu, 03 Jul 2014 10:26:08 -0700
Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen praised QB Cam Newton. "I don't know if there is another QB in the league that does what he does...he has really grown," Newton said.
Fantasy Tip: The big question with Newton will be his health after undergoing an ankle procedure in the offseason. If he is healthy going into training camp, he should be considered a QB2 going into the season.

Thu, 19 Jun 2014 11:57:56 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) participated in seven-on-seven drills for the first time since his ankle surgery in March. He's about a month ahead of schedule, as he was initially supposed to start drills at training camp in July. Newton said he's excited to return, but admits he's not at 100 percent. Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton made good decisions and the right reads, but didn't get the ball where he needed to, adding that accuracy will come with time as Newton becomes healthier. Additionally, the team plans to limit his runs in training camp.
Fantasy Tip: This is certainly a promising sign for Newton and fantasy players. Still, no matter how well Newton is progressing, he doesn't exactly have a deep supporting cast and should be considered a QB2 going into the season.
Tue, 17 Jun 2014 09:47:14 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) tested his surgically repaired ankle Tuesday, June 17, and did more than head coach Ron Rivera was expecting. Newton did not participate in any team drills after taking three and five-step drops on passes to wide receivers. "I think I'm on schedule to make a speedy recovery," Newton said after practice. "We are in the last curve and I am just trying to be smart about it, do everything that the trainers ask of me and more and see where that gets me."
Fantasy Tip: Newton appears to be right on track in his recovery from ankle surgery. As long as there are no setbacks, he should be good to go for training camp.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said the last thing on his mind is his next contract, following a report of concerns from Newton's camp about how Colin Kaepernick's new deal may affect his. Carolina has made known its interest in signing Newton to a long-term deal. Negotiations have not begun, however.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) may be ready for the team's June 16-19 minicamp, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton has thrown some off to the side during the first two days of organized team activities. He's showing no signs of limping, although he skipped some drills like high steps. Newton added that his foot is getting stronger every day.
Fantasy Tip: This is certainly promising news for Newton, who has been a top-five fantasy quarterback in each of his first three seasons. While it may take some time for him to fully recover and get used to his new receiving corps, he’s still a solid QB1 option in all formats.

Tue, 29 Apr 2014 11:15:29 -0700
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said it is more important to protect QB Cam Newton than to get another offensive weapon. "I think protecting him (is more important),"Rivera said. "You have so many opportunities to get play makers on the field. Other than the quarterback there are five other guys who can make plays for you. I think right now what we've done is bring in guys who have the ability to make plays for us. I feel very comfortable with that."

We hope to see 100 percent turnout by the end of OTAs."

Sat, 19 Apr 2014 06:23:43 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) remains in a walking boot about a month after ankle surgery. The team is hopeful Newton will be ready to go for training camp.
Fantasy Tip: It appears that everything is right on schedule for Newton. While it is good news that the target is training camp, missing the offseason activities with all the changes in Carolina is not good for anyone involved on that offense.
Wed, 02 Apr 2014 11:43:36 -0700
Bus Cook, agent for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton, said he was not surprised when the team said they plan to pick up the fifth year option in Newton's contract. The team sides can continue to work on a contract extension.
Wed, 02 Apr 2014 11:34:41 -0700
Bus Cook, agent for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle), said Newton is doing well in his rehab from offseason ankle surgery. Newton is expected to miss all of the offseason workouts but should be ready for training camp.
Fantasy Tip: Newton will have the entire offseason to recover from his surgery but will also miss time to work with his new wide receivers, which could hurt his chemistry with them. Newton should be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback entering the 2014 season because of the injury and the wide receivers on the roster.

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 10:10:50 -0700
The Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with WR Jerricho Cotchery (Steelers) Thursday, March 20. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Fantasy Tip: Between Cam Newton spending the offseason rehabbing after ankle surgery and the lack of depth at the position, Cotchery is likely a No.4 or No. 5 wide receiver at best. Look elsewhere if you have better options on draft day.
Wed, 19 Mar 2014 15:41:47 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) had successful surgery to fix ligament damage in his left ankle Wednesday, March 19, and his full recovery process will take four months. Newton could be allowed to throw on a limited basis before that, however. ESPN's Stephania Bell said Newton's running shouldn't be affected by his surgery.
Fantasy Tip: Newton will miss valuable training time over the summer, especially with whoever his new receivers may be for the upcoming season. The absence of any notable wideouts on roster right now is perplexing. Newton has become a sizeable risk as a QB1, and he's probably safer as a backup the way things are looking.
Tue, 18 Mar 2014 12:44:31 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) will have ankle surgery Wednesday, March 18. Ligaments in Newton's left ankle had stretched out, and the procedure will tighten them. The recovery time is expected to be up to four months, which would coincide with the start of training camp.
Fantasy Tip: This news is not ideal for Newton, especially with the situation at wide receiver. Newton will need time with whoever the team brings in at that position. Newton may come at a bit of a cheaper price since he will spend the rest of the offseason rehabbing. With the lack of weapons around him, Newton is probably a borderline No. 1 quarterback, at best.
Tue, 18 Feb 2014 19:39:51 -0800
There were no new developments in the contract situation with the Carolina Panthers and DE Greg Hardy. The team has two weeks to decide whether to use the franchise tag, which would buy the team another year to negotiate with Hardy. However, if they do tag him, it would consume nearly all of the team's unused cap space, which is a hefty price considering the team is looking to lock up franchise cornerstones QB Cam Newton and LB Luke Kuechly with huge deals in the next two years.

"It's going to be interesting. There's going to be a lot of work, a lot of research. A lot of thought is going to go into it. Philosophically, I'm going to start with a fair offer. It's going to be fair. And then we'll move from there."
Tue, 14 Jan 2014 13:55:59 -0800
Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said QB Cam Newton has proven that he is the team's franchise quarterback, but Gettleman wouldn't say if the team will approach a long-term deal with Newton. Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) tweaked his ankle in the second quarter of the team's Week 16 game, but is expected to be fine. Head coach Ron Rivera does not believe Newton will miss a practice.
Fantasy Tip: Newton struggled in soggy conditions against the New Orleans Saints last weekend. He should have a much better statistical day against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17, including on the ground if his ankle injury is indeed minor.
