Bus Cook, agent for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton, said he was not surprised when the team said they plan to pick up the fifth year option in Newton's contract. The team sides can continue to work on a contract extension.
Wed, 02 Apr 2014 11:34:41 -0700
Bus Cook, agent for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle), said Newton is doing well in his rehab from offseason ankle surgery. Newton is expected to miss all of the offseason workouts but should be ready for training camp.
Fantasy Tip: Newton will have the entire offseason to recover from his surgery but will also miss time to work with his new wide receivers, which could hurt his chemistry with them. Newton should be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback entering the 2014 season because of the injury and the wide receivers on the roster.
Tue, 25 Mar 2014 09:58:09 -0700
The Carolina Panthers are expected to use the fifth-year option to lock up QB Cam Newton through the 2015 season. The Panthers are unlikely to get to the fifth year of Newton's contract as they continue to try to sign him to a long-term deal.
Mon, 24 Mar 2014 10:06:11 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) had been bothered by his ankle injury since his playing days in college, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton aggravated the injury in a Dec. 22 game against the New Orleans Saints last year.
Thu, 20 Mar 2014 10:10:50 -0700
The Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with WR Jerricho Cotchery (Steelers) Thursday, March 20. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Fantasy Tip: Between Cam Newton spending the offseason rehabbing after ankle surgery and the lack of depth at the position, Cotchery is likely a No.4 or No. 5 wide receiver at best. Look elsewhere if you have better options on draft day.
Wed, 19 Mar 2014 15:41:47 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) had successful surgery to fix ligament damage in his left ankle Wednesday, March 19, and his full recovery process will take four months. Newton could be allowed to throw on a limited basis before that, however. ESPN's Stephania Bell said Newton's running shouldn't be affected by his surgery.
Fantasy Tip: Newton will miss valuable training time over the summer, especially with whoever his new receivers may be for the upcoming season. The absence of any notable wideouts on roster right now is perplexing. Newton has become a sizeable risk as a QB1, and he's probably safer as a backup the way things are looking.
Tue, 18 Mar 2014 12:44:31 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) will have ankle surgery Wednesday, March 18. Ligaments in Newton's left ankle had stretched out, and the procedure will tighten them. The recovery time is expected to be up to four months, which would coincide with the start of training camp.
Fantasy Tip: This news is not ideal for Newton, especially with the situation at wide receiver. Newton will need time with whoever the team brings in at that position. Newton may come at a bit of a cheaper price since he will spend the rest of the offseason rehabbing. With the lack of weapons around him, Newton is probably a borderline No. 1 quarterback, at best.
Tue, 18 Feb 2014 19:39:51 -0800
There were no new developments in the contract situation with the Carolina Panthers and DE Greg Hardy. The team has two weeks to decide whether to use the franchise tag, which would buy the team another year to negotiate with Hardy. However, if they do tag him, it would consume nearly all of the team's unused cap space, which is a hefty price considering the team is looking to lock up franchise cornerstones QB Cam Newton and LB Luke Kuechly with huge deals in the next two years.
Mon, 17 Feb 2014 11:05:08 -0800
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he would consider holding out this offseason if he does not receive a new contract. Newton said he believes he is a leader on the team and should be with the team.
Sun, 26 Jan 2014 07:26:05 -0800
Carolina Panthers general manager David Gettleman said he will offer QB Cam Newton a fair contract to start contract negotiations. "It's going to be fun," Gettleman said. "It's going to be interesting. There's going to be a lot of work, a lot of research. A lot of thought is going to go into it. Philosophically, I'm going to start with a fair offer. It's going to be fair. And then we'll move from there."
Tue, 14 Jan 2014 13:55:59 -0800
Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said QB Cam Newton has proven that he is the team's franchise quarterback, but Gettleman wouldn't say if the team will approach a long-term deal with Newton. The team has until May 3 to pick up his fifth-year option, which would be similar to a franchise tag.
Mon, 13 Jan 2014 11:06:35 -0800
The Carolina Panthers likely will try to sign QB Cam Newton to a contract extension this offseason. This offseason will be the first time teams can negotiate an extension with their 2011 first-round draft choices.
Fri, 27 Dec 2013 20:28:00 -0800
Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy, C Ryan Kalil, LB Luke Kuechly, QB Cam Newton and FB Mike Tolbert were announced as Pro Bowl selections Friday, Dec. 27.
Fri, 27 Dec 2013 10:34:12 -0800
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) fully practiced Friday, Dec. 27, and is probable for Week 17.
Thu, 26 Dec 2013 13:43:14 -0800
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) practiced in full Thursday, Dec. 26.
Fantasy Tip: Newton's ankle is fine; He practiced in full Wednesday, as well. Against the Atlanta Falcons, expect him to bounce back in a big way from his Week 16 showing. Consider Newton a strong option as a QB1 to close out the regular season.
Tue, 24 Dec 2013 10:48:04 -0800
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said QB Cam Newton's (ankle) ankle is fine.
Mon, 23 Dec 2013 09:40:14 -0800
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) tweaked his ankle in the second quarter of the team's Week 16 game, but is expected to be fine. Head coach Ron Rivera does not believe Newton will miss a practice.
Fantasy Tip: Newton struggled in soggy conditions against the New Orleans Saints last weekend. He should have a much better statistical day against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17, including on the ground if his ankle injury is indeed minor.
Sun, 22 Dec 2013 18:57:06 -0800
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) said Sunday, Dec. 22, that he suffered an ankle injury in the Week 16 game against the New Orleans Saints. "Nicked it," Newton said. The quarterback had both of his ankles re-taped during the game.
Thu, 19 Dec 2013 23:49:45 -0800
With 7,673 passing yards in 30 regular-season starts, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck needs 248 for the most by a quarterback in his first two seasons. Carolina's Cam Newton had 7,920 in 2011-12 and the Colts' Peyton Manning had 7,874 in 1998-99. Also, Luck has 20 wins, tied for fourth-most by a QB in his first two seasons. Seattle's Russell Wilson has 23 with two games to play while Ben Roethlisberger had 22 in 2004-05 and Dan Marino 21 in 1983-84.
Mon, 16 Dec 2013 11:51:47 -0800
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (toe) suffered a toe injury during the team's Week 15 game, but head coach Ron Rivera said the injury is not a big deal. Newton did not have to undergo X-rays on the toe, and it has not been diagnosed as turf toe.
Fantasy Tip: It appears like Newton will be fine for Week 16, but owners should monitor his practice participation this week in case he has a setback.
Fri, 29 Nov 2013 19:42:47 -0800
Miami Dolphins DE Cameron Wake has been fined $15,750 for an illegal hit on Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton Week 12.
Mon, 18 Nov 2013 20:53:33 -0800
The New England Patriots defense had forced a turnover in 36 straight games entering the Week 11 game against the Carolina Panthers and QB Cam Newton Monday, Nov. 18. However, the Patriots were unable to force any turnovers, ending the NFL's longest active streak.
Sun, 03 Nov 2013 14:28:08 -0800
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton tossed two interceptions in the Week 9 win against the Atlanta Falcons, snapping a three-game streak without any INTs. The good news is that he completed 23 of his 37 pass attempts for 249 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran five times for 22 yards and a score.
Fantasy Tip: Newton has re-emerged as a must-start in all fantasy leagues after a bit of a slow start, as he not only does it with his arm, but is doing it with his legs. And the Panthers have won four straight games, and Newton's confidence continues to build.
Fri, 25 Oct 2013 09:07:44 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton had a passer rating of 111.6 by going 23-for-32 for 221 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 8 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday, Oct. 24. Newton also ran for a team-high 50 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown. He has three straight games with a passer rating over 100 with a QBR of 85 or better. Newton was 20-for-24 for 171 yards and two touchdowns on passes 10 yards or fewer.
Tue, 22 Oct 2013 17:59:25 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has completed 35 of his 43 passes (81.3 percent) in the past two weeks, good for 446 yards and four touchdowns, without an interception. Carolina won both contests. He has completed 65.3 percent of his passes and has thrown twice as many touchdown passes as INTs this season. He credits improved preparation, aided by offensive coordinator Mike Shula, quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey and backup passer Derek Anderson.
Among the positive developments for Newton has been an enhanced ability to go through his progressions and get to his third and fourth reads. It's a work-in-progress, because Newton still holds on to the ball too long at times, according to head coach Ron Rivera, but he's seen progress.
Fantasy Tip: As Rivera notes, Newton played only one season of major college football before he declared for the NFL Draft, so it's unsurprising that the third-year QB has taken a couple of years to mature. There are still questions about his makeup, but this is a positive sign for Newton's owners, particularly those in long-term keeper leagues.
Sun, 20 Oct 2013 11:50:18 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (undisclosed) left the Week 7 game for a play with an undisclosed injury. He has returned to the game.
Sun, 22 Sep 2013 18:06:49 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton tied a career high with three touchdown passes in the Week 3 win against the New York Giants. He completed 15 of his 27 passes for 223 yards, and he also ran seven times for 45 yards and a score.
Fantasy Tip: Newton and the Panthers have a bye in Week 4, so you'll need to make alternate plans.
Fri, 20 Sep 2013 12:53:38 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith thinks QB Cam Newton is pressing in the early season. "What the current issue is, you have a young player pressing," Smith said. "And what do I mean by pressing? You know when a young player, a receiver, if he doesn't get a lot of passes, all of sudden instead of going down he fights for that extra yard, fumble. That's what you're seeing with Cam a little bit, I feel like, in the past game is, well, (imitates stammering) and now you got that pressing." Newton went 21-for-38 for 229 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He overthrew his receivers often, however.
Fantasy Tip: Newton has been wildly inconsistent with his downfield throws, which has left his fantasy owners yearning for more. He can make things happen with his legs, but until he proves he can beat defenses deep consistently, he may be a headache in fantasy circles.
Fri, 13 Sep 2013 10:02:35 -0700
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said he's not partial to running a high-octane, up-tempo offense in the NFL. The Panthers and QB Cam Newton ran a league-low 50 total plays in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. "I'm not quite sure what the real, true benefit is other than having a few more plays," Rivera said. "People say, 'Well, you get 75, 80 plays going faster.' You also can go 1-2-3 and out faster and put the other team back on the field faster. So which is it?" Newton also attempted only three passes of more than 10 yards down the field.
Fantasy Tip: Newton is playing in a more conservative, ball-control offense that has limited his fantasy value. However, the Panthers realize this and are planning on opening up their playbook a little more. Newton should have more success in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills defense.
Mon, 09 Sep 2013 16:28:48 -0700
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera admitted that his team's offense was too conservative in their Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. QB Cam Newton only had three pass attempts of more than 10 yards in the game. "There are some things that need to be looked at on both sides in terms of getting the ball vertical," Rivera said as he looked ahead to Week 2 at the Buffalo Bills. "We looked through it. We talked about it and those will be the things that we look to do. We have to create more of those opportunities." The Panthers rushed for 134 yards on 26 carries against Seattle.
Fantasy Tip: To be fair, the Panthers were facing one of the better pass defenses in the league in the Seahawks. However, expect Newton and the offense to attempt to stretch the field more often, beginning in Week 2. This should benefit Steve Smith, Greg Olsen and the other receiving options.
Mon, 09 Sep 2013 11:58:36 -0700
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said he wants the team's team passing game to be more aggressive than it was Week 1. QB Cam Newton only threw for 125 yards Week 1 and only three of his passes traveled more than 10 yards in the air.
Fantasy Tip: Newton should have better passing games moving forward if the team calls for more downfield passes. He should be considered a matchup-based play until he gets into a rhythm but likely will be an every-week starter based on where he was drafted.
Fri, 16 Aug 2013 13:11:05 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and the first-team offense has scored only one touchdown in eight series over two preseason games so far. The one touchdown came on a short field (18 yards) after a defensive interception. Their other seven series have produced four punts, two field goals and an interception. Newton completed only eight of his 17 passes for 112 yards Thursday, Aug. 15. RB DeAngelo Williams had 12 carries for 39 yards, but offensive coordinator Mike Shula kept his play calls conservative.
Fantasy Tip: Shula probably isn't showing his full hand in the preseason, but it's not good to see the Panthers offense struggling the way it has. Still, it's way early and they haven't had time to settle into games, so don't be too alarmed. Jonathan Stewart has missed time due to injury, too.
Fri, 16 Aug 2013 10:54:52 -0700
Carolina Panthers WR Ted Ginn Jr. was targeted seven times in the preseason opener, but he hauled in just one pass. In the second preseason game Thursday, Aug. 15, against the Philadelphia Eagles, Ginn was targeted three times and he posted two catches for 39 yards, with both throws coming from starting QB Cam Newton.
Fantasy Tip: Ginn still has a long way to go until he can be trusted as a regular fantasy receiver again, but he should get chances in Charlotte. Entering the regular season, his fantasy value remains limited to those formats which also include individual return yardage.
Fri, 16 Aug 2013 10:49:50 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was in for five series in the preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, Aug. 15, and he led the team to two field goals and three punts. In eight series over the first two preseason games, Newton has led just one touchdown drive, and that came on a short field (18 yards) after an interception. "We kicked two field goals (Thursday), but I want touchdowns," head coach Ron Rivera said Friday, Aug. 16.
Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners shouldn't be too terribly concerned, at least not yet. The Panthers have been starting slowly under Rivera the past couple of years, but Newton remains a legitimate No. 1 fantasy option heading into the regular season. If you drafted him, remember, these are just preseason games. If you're thinking about drafting him, remember, these are just preseason games.
Tue, 30 Jul 2013 18:25:35 -0700
Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula made it clear during training camp that he wants to run a balanced offense that takes advantage of all of the team's talent at the skill positions. The read option may only be a small part of the team's offense. "You can't just rely on (RB DeAngelo Williams) and (RB Jonathan Stewart), running the football and you can't just rely on (QB Cam Newton)," Shula said. "We have to spread that out. Hopefully, in doing that, with the guys that we have here personnel wise, we can keep teams off balance and make them understand they're going to have to account for everybody on every part of the field."
Tue, 30 Jul 2013 13:23:50 -0700
The Carolina Panthers expect QB Cam Newton to improve in his third season, although they aren't ready to approach a contract extension with him. "He's really physically gifted obviously," general manager Dave Gettleman said. "He's gotten better and he keeps improving. What you're looking for is ascension, and he consistently does it. He's had a good training camp. It's a maturation process." Newton threw two interceptions in practice Tuesday, July 30, but he's been impressive in camp other than that.
Sat, 27 Jul 2013 23:38:25 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton, WR Steve Smith and TE Greg Olsen have all come out in support of testing for human growth hormone, something currently not done in the NFL. "Whatever the NFL decides to do I'm all for it, whether HGH testing or any testing," Newton said. "I'll be prepared to do the test." Olsen also called it good for the game, and Smith said he is all for weeding out the cheaters.
Fri, 26 Jul 2013 08:21:17 -0700
Carolina Panthers RB Mike Tolbert said he notices a change in QB Cam Newton from last season and described him as more vocal.
Sun, 23 Jun 2013 08:14:18 -0700
Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula said he does not want QB Cam Newton to stop running but does want Newton to avoid unnecessary hits. "In this run/read offense, there are decisions he makes with the option," Shula said. "Don't make decisions where he gets hit right away. If you are not sure if you should hand it off or keep it, then hand it off."
Sun, 23 Jun 2013 08:10:34 -0700
Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula said the team will be using the plays that QB Cam Newton has been successful with because they want his comfort level to be high. "We want his comfort level the highest it's ever been," Shula said. "We looked at the things we've done our first two years. The things we do well, we want to continue to build on. The other stuff, we look at how we can do it better or get rid of it. We're looking at different ways for him to think faster and play faster on the field."
Sun, 23 Jun 2013 08:08:06 -0700
Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula indicated the offense could use less verbiage at times in the huddle because the team wants to take some of the burden off QB Cam Newton. "The more words you have in your play calling, the easier it is on everyone else because the quarterback basically is telling them what to do. Fewer words help the quarterbacks because he doesn't have to say as much. This offense can get very wordy. So we're trying to massage it so he doesn't have to call long plays all the time and put more of the burden on some of the other players. It will help not being in the huddle all that long," Shula said.
Wed, 19 Jun 2013 10:19:57 -0700
The Carolina Panthers did not run many zone-read OTAs. The option package will be de-emphasized under new offensive coordinator Mike Shula.
Fantasy Tip: Great idea, since Cam Newton struggled in those plays early last season. The switch that was flipped in Newton's stats column was prompted by Carolina easing up on the zone-read. Expect the typical erratic statistical distribution among the backfield, but Newton should have another fine year with his increased time as a pocket passer. He'll cost plenty in drafts.
Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:25:01 -0700
Carolina Panthers WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are locked in at the top two spots. Ted Ginn Jr. has stood out during minicamp, catching several deep passes from Cam Newton. Armanti Edwards looks more comfortable playing the position. Ginn and Edwards will compete with Kealoha Pilares, Joe Adams and David Gettis for roster spots and reps.
Fantasy Tip: It's hard to trust Ginn finally developing into a full-fledged catcher, but there's big-play potential here in what could be a surprisingly productive passing system. Greg Olsen's presence limits the availability of secondary targets, but waiver-wire scroungers in deep leagues will watch this play out during the season.
Fri, 31 May 2013 07:18:46 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he wants to become a team captain at some point but understands that his teammates will have to vote him as one. "Team captain is solely based off of your peers," Newton said. "I'm going about it each and every day, trying to do my part to prove not only to my team, but first myself, that's a big responsibility on the field and off the field." WR Steve Smith and OT Jordan Gross are currently the team's offensive captains.
Wed, 29 May 2013 11:30:29 -0700
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he lost 12 pounds in the offseason, bringing him down from 255 pounds to 243. "It was just a personal goal that I set for myself. I'm not going to go into what it really meant because looking at my body from afar you really couldn't tell," Newton said. "Being that I lost the weight, nobody really could tell, either."
Fantasy Tip: After starting out slow last year, Newton turned things around in the second half and matured tremendously as a quarterback. With a stellar offense line at his disposal, expect Newton to continue getting better. The added dimension that he brings to the running game makes him even more valuable as a No. 1 fantasy QB.
Sun, 10 Feb 2013 18:54:15 -0800
The Carolina Panthers might look to free-agent QB Matt Moore (Dolphins) for their backup job behind QB Cam Newton in 2013. Moore is reportedly well liked in Charlotte after previously playing three years for the Panthers. Impending free-agent QB Derek Anderson (Panthers) is not expected back, hinting he might reunite with Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski.
Fri, 01 Feb 2013 16:50:48 -0800
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he is very happy with the decision to make Mike Shula the team's new offensive coordinator. "I don't think there was a better person that could come in and take over," Newton said. "I'm excited about taking the next steps in the process with him." Newton said he has talked with Shula several times and expects the offense to be similar to the one they have been using but with some changes.
Sun, 20 Jan 2013 12:02:21 -0800
Carolina Panthers FB Mike Tolbert said he believes the offense under offensive coordinator Mike Shula will be similar to the one the team used when Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski was the coordinator. "You never know what (a coach) has planned," Tolbert said. "But at the same time, I think the basic scheme of things probably won't change much." Tolbert thinks Shula's hiring will be good for QB Cam Newton because he will not have to learn a new offense.
Thu, 17 Jan 2013 06:15:07 -0800
Carolina Panthers quarterbacks coach Mike Shula, who was interviewed for the team's offensive coordinator vacancy, would allow the team to make the most seamless transition following the departure of offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski to the Cleveland Browns. The Panthers are hoping to run the same offense around QB Cam Newton in 2013 as they did under Chudzinski.
Wed, 02 Jan 2013 09:39:13 -0800
X-rays on Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton's (ribs, ankle) ribs revealed no fractures, while test results on his injured ankle showed a minor high sprain, according to the team's trainer, Ryan Vermillion.
