49ers | Colin Kaepernick excited about offense

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 14:41:55 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (knee, shoulder, thumb) said he is eager to run the offense that head coach Chip Kelly has brought to the team because it is similar to the one he used in college. He said he believes the new offense will give him more chances to run the ball.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick has not been able to practice this offseason because of multiple surgeries but should be ready for training camp. He will be competing with Blaine Gabbert but probably would only be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job during camp.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick looking to improve play

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 14:25:01 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (knee, shoulder, thumb) has tried to improve his flexibility this offseason by stretching his back because it would tighten up on him in the past. He is looking to become more limber so he can be a more elusive runner, according to a source. Kaepernick is also wearing contact lenses to help his short-area vision and has a tinted visor on his helmet to protect the contacts and reduce the sunlight in his eyes.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick will have to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job during training camp, so owners should keep an eye on the situation. Kaepernick probably has more fantasy value at this point, but the winner of the job should be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback in all leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick focused on football

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 15:52:50 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick doesn't anticipate any issues between him and the organization this season, even after requesting a trade earlier in the year. "I'm here, I'm a 49er, I'm excited for this offseason, the work that I can put in this summer to get ready for training camp and to come in and compete," Kaepernick said. Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee), who had multiple offseason surgeries, also expects to be healthier and bulkier when training camp rolls around.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick will battle with Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job in San Francisco. While Kaep is the more attractive fantasy option, neither should be viewed as a starting fantasy quarterback.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert the favorite at QB?

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 11:47:31 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is the "heavy favorite" to enter the 2016 as the starting quarterback, according to NFL Media columnist Michael Silver. QB Colin Kaepernick is "allegedly in competition" with Gabbert for the starting job. "He's loved in this locker room," Silver said of Gabbert. "He did a lot of good things last year and I'd be shocked if he's not the starter in the opener."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's surgeries in the offseason have kept him from taking part in organized team activities, so the real competition under center will take place in training camp. Kap has better physical abilities and more fantasy upside, but if he doesn't show well in camp, Gabbert could open Week 1 as the starter. There is upside for whoever starts in Chip Kelly's system, but neither should be taken as a pure QB1 in fantasy drafts this fall.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to do individual drills

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 10:45:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) isn't cleared to take part in the minicamp, but head coach Chip Kelly said that Kaepernick will do individual drills on the side.

Fantasy Tip: Kap is slowly making progress from the injuries he suffered in his forgettable 2015 campaign, but he should be good to go for training camp at the end of July. Barring a meltdown or setback with his injuries, he should win the starting job over Blaine Gabbert. In Kelly's up-tempo offense, Kaepernick has upside, but nobody should be drafting him as a straight up starting fantasy QB.

49ers | Niners QBs similar says Chip Kelly

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 10:53:17 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert are on similar ground, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "I think they're similar," Kelly told KGMZ-FM. "They have a similar skill set. They're both 6-foot-4-plus. They both can really run, which will help keep plays alive. Obviously we're not a quarterback-run offense, but if the quarterback can run, you can use a little of that to your advantage. And they both have extremely strong arms. So, from a skill set standpoint, the two of them are kind of cut out of the same mold."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is coming off a frustrating 2015 season that ended prematurely due to multiple injuries. But when healthy, he has more upside in real life and in fantasy than Gabbert does. Kelly's new up-tempo offense could be a great fit for Kapernick as he looks to rebound, but nobody should be willing to invest anything more than a midrange fantasy backup selection on him.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick out for minicamp

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 07:54:59 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) won't be cleared for minicamp this week, but the team is hoping he receives clearance closer to training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is the type of pick you take late in drafts as a low-end backup in hopes that you can catch lightning in a bottle if your starter flames out or is injured.

49ers | No timetable for Colin Kaepernick

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 14:49:13 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) does not have a timetable for when he will be cleared for football activities, according to offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins. Modkins said it's important that Kaepernick is cleared when he's healthy.

Fantasy Tip: The waiting game continues for Kaepernick and the 49ers. If San Francisco doesn't think Kaepernick can get fully healthy in time for training camp or the regular season, then Blaine Gabbert could be given the reins, if only temporarily. Neither one should be drafted as a starting fantasy quarterback, however.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick still not ready

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 05:40:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, knee, thumb) has still not been cleared to participate in practice but he has reported for every organized team activity this offseason. Kaepernick has been taking mental reps during practice. He is scheduled to receive a $400,000 bonus if he participates in at least 90% of the offseason workouts. Kaepernick may not receive clearance for full participation for the mandatory minicamp in a few weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick may not practice until training camp and will have to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job. He has had success in the past and could be the leading candidate for the job at this point. Kaepernick probably will be a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues if he is a starter.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not falling behind

Tue, 17 May 2016 12:35:35 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is not falling behind QB Blaine Gabbert despite still rehabilitating his injuries, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "[Kaepernick] has a great grasp of what we're doing," Kelly said. "I'm really impressed by both [Gabbert] and him and their intelligence and being able to pick up what we're trying to do." Kelly said he hasn't set a timetable for when the starter will be announced.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is still the most attractive fantasy option, but he may not start, obviously. Gabbert has disappointed throughout his career, but he'll have more intrigue in Kelly's offense. Neither are worthy of QB1 consideration, though.
