49ers | Blaine Gabbert remains the starter

Tue, 27 Sep 2016 06:39:58 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert will remain the starting quarterback, in part, because he's better in practice than QB Colin Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert has been atrocious as a starter for much of his career, and he warrants no fantasy value for now.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick could start soon

Mon, 26 Sep 2016 12:16:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) may reclaim his starting job once he's back to full health, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "I don't think he's 100 percent right now, so that's why he's our No. 2," Kelly said.

Fantasy Tip: Just like he did in the preseason, Blaine Gabbert hasn't exactly done anything to run away with the job and doesn't bring nearly the same level of athleticism to the table that a fully healthy Kaepernick does. While Kaepernick probably isn't going to be the long-term answer for Kelly either, his willingness to go deep may open things up for a running game that has generated a lot of production in garbage time. He'll be a low-end QB2 at best if/when he is named the starter.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert does enough to win

Mon, 12 Sep 2016 21:06:38 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 170 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams. He also ran nine times for 43 yards before giving way to backup QB Colin Kaepernick late in the fourth quarter of a blowout win.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert didn't look great, and he is a low-end QB2 in most fantasy leagues for a reason. But his running numbers were a bit of an eye opener and he could be useful down the road if he continues to jell with his receivers.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert named starter in San Fran

Sat, 03 Sep 2016 14:55:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has been named the starting quarterback over Colin Kaepernick, head coach Chip Kelly announced Saturday, Sept. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Even if there was the competition in the beginning, Kaepernick was rarely ever healthy enough for long enough to make this result a surprise. Given Kelly's offensive tempo, Gabbert's mobility and the amount of time San Francisco figures to be trailing in games this season, the former No. 10 overall pick has a decent shot to return low-end QB2 value in fantasy this season.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick likely will make roster

Fri, 02 Sep 2016 16:04:13 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick likely will make the 53-man roster, according to sources. Head coach Chip Kelly has said Kaepernick is one of the top two quarterbacks on the roster.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Kaepernick will be with the 49ers this season, but he probably will start the season as the No. 2 quarterback since he has not posted great preseason numbers. He does not have much value at this point, but owners could consider adding him if he becomes the starter during the season.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick decent in finale

Fri, 02 Sep 2016 05:29:22 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was 11-for-18 for 103 yards and no picks or touchdowns in the last preseason game Thursday, Sept. 1. He also rushed four times for 38 yards.

Fantasy Tip: It's anyone's guess as to what Chip Kelly decides to do at quarterback, but Kaepernick has more physical tools than Blaine Gabbert. Neither are worth having as more than a low-end QB2 in two-QB leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to play in finale

Tue, 30 Aug 2016 10:19:16 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will play in the preseason finale, and QB Blaine Gabbert will sit out, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert appears to be the guy, but he really doesn't merit much fantasy value aside from depth. Kaepernick has more upside, but he might need a change of scenery to harness it.

49ers | OC expects Colin Kaepernick to make team

Mon, 29 Aug 2016 17:01:21 -0700

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said he expects QB Colin Kaepernick to be on the roster when the regular season starts but that it is not his decision.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Kaepernick is losing the battle for the starting quarterback job to Blaine Gabbert, but head coach Chip Kelly said Kaepernick is still an option. He probably would only be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job and can be avoided if he is a backup.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick on chopping block?

Sun, 28 Aug 2016 20:53:06 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick faces a "very big uphill battle" to make the 53-man roster, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com.

Fantasy Tip: If Kaepernick is cut, Blaine Gabbert would have a little more job security. Chip Kelly has worked miracles before with quarterbacks, but Gabbert remains a speculative QB2.

49ers | QB competition still open in San Francisco

Sat, 27 Aug 2016 16:48:52 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert and QB Colin Kaepernick are still competing for the starting job, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert has done little to win the job this preseason, while Kaepernick did more to create news with his pre-game actions last night than he did with his play. The winner is a good bet to carry QB2 value at various points during the season thanks to the volume of plays head coach Chip Kelly's offense usually generate.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick has quiet performance

Sat, 27 Aug 2016 05:38:02 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick went 2-for-6 for 14 yards in the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26. He also rushed for 18 yards on four carries. Kaepernick said he believes he still has a chance to win the starting quarterback job.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick appears to be behind Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback position but still has a chance since head coach Chip Kelly has not named a starter yet. He would have more fantasy value than Gabbert but likely would only be a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues if he wins the job.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick may start Friday

Fri, 26 Aug 2016 13:19:33 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) could start the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, since QB Blaine Gabbert started the first two preseason games.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick and Gabbert continue to compete for the starting job but this will be Kaepernick's first time on the field this offseason. Kaepernick would be the more valuable option for fantasy owners, but neither quarterback should be a No. 1 quarterback for owners.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick set to debut Friday

Wed, 24 Aug 2016 10:13:25 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) is "on track" to play against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick has flamed out over the past two seasons and is now battling for the starting job with Blaine Gabbert. Kaepernick owns significantly more upside, especially in fantasy, but he's also just returning from practice following offseason shoulder surgery and then a period of nursing soreness during his recovery. In single-QB leagues, Kaepernick and Gabbert are off the fantasy radar for now, but Kaepernick could prove to be a potential streaming option in favorable matchups before the season is done. It's a situation to monitor.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick back at practice

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 12:42:27 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) participated in a full warmup practice Monday, Aug. 22. It was his first such participation since Aug. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Maybe now Kaep can ramp up San Fran's quarterback competition. Blaine Gabbert has been decent in the first two preseason games, but he hasn't really flashed. Kaepernick still has a chance to prove he deserves to start, but neither Gabbert nor Kaepernick are starting caliber QBs in traditional leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick showing improvement

Sun, 21 Aug 2016 07:40:49 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) displayed improved velocity on his passes during pregame warmups Saturday, Aug. 20, and remains on target to resume practicing this week, according to head coach Chip Kelly. The team remains hopeful that he will play in the next preseason game versus the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is engaged in a battle this preseason for San Francisco's starting quarterback job with Blaine Gabbert. Although Kaepernick has a higher ceiling, neither player should be viewed as anything more than a QB2 in traditional fantasy leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick has arm fatigure

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 13:33:38 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) is dealing with arm fatigue what had previously been referred to as a dead arm. Kaepernick has participated in some drills, but has not thrown. He will not play Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: If/when Kaep does return to full strength, he'll still have to win the starting job ahead of Blaine Gabbert. It's a yawner of a quarterback battle, though, as neither one should be considered starting caliber for fantasy squads.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to practice next week

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 08:25:23 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) will practice next week, according to head coach Chip Kelly. Kaepernick is on target to play in the third preseason game.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is battling Blaine Gabbert for the starting job. Whomever wins the job will be a QB2 in fantasy, but Kaepernick has much more upside in fantasy.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick limited

Wed, 17 Aug 2016 12:59:12 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) participated in the handoff drills during practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, but did not participate in any of the throwing drills. Kaepernick did do some throwing on a side field.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is competing with Blaine Gabbert and will need to return to practice if he wants a chance to win the job. Kaepernick would be the better option for fantasy owners if he won the starting job, but owners should consider the winner of the job as a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick fully dressed

Wed, 17 Aug 2016 09:01:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) is fully dressed for practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, but has yet to throw in the early portion of practice.

Fantasy Tip: Kaep will have to beat out Blaine Gabbert for the starting job, and some reports have Gabbert substantially ahead of Kaepernick. Regardless of who wins the starting job, they'll be a QB2 in fantasy. However, Kaepernick has much more upside for fantasy.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not practicing

Tue, 16 Aug 2016 14:13:56 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 16, as he continues to deal with his dead arm. Kaepernick has not thrown a pass in six days.

Fantasy Tip: Blaine Gabbert seems to have a good hold on the starting quarterback position for now, and he may be mildly underrated with his unsung running ability. Still, don't confuse Gabbert for a starting fantasy quarterback.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not at full strength

Mon, 15 Aug 2016 14:51:09 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) is dealing with "a dead arm," according to sources. The 49ers hope he'll be back to full strength soon.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick has an uphill battle ahead of him as he is expected to play behind Blaine Gabbert, at least to start the season. Unless Kaepernick takes back the starting job, he can be avoided in traditional leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick back next week?

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 21:31:07 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) isn't expected to be out of action much longer and could play in the second preseason game against the Denver Broncos Saturday, Aug. 20, head coach Chip Kelly said.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is facing an uphill battle to win the starting job from Blaine Gabbert. Whoever ends up starting should benefit from Kelly's system and finish as a midrange QB2.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert running away with QB job

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 15:25:33 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has been the "landslide favorite for weeks" in his battle with QB Colin Kaepernick, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Fantasy Tip: Caplan notes head coach Chip Kelly "is trying to be fair" to Kaepernick by allowing the quarterback competition to go on this long, but Kaepernick likely missed too much time in the offseason to make it a fair fight. Expect Gabbert to be running the show in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams and make for a sneaky QB2 option for an offense that figures to be playing from behind a lot in 2016.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to miss preseason opener

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 15:08:42 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) will not play against the Houston Texans on Sunday, Aug. 14, due to shoulder soreness.

Fantasy Tip: Blaine Gabbert will get the start as expected and a chance to further cement his status as the leader in the quarterback competition, while Jeff Driskel and Thad Lewis will likely take the majority of reps after the first quarter. The Gabbert-Kaepernick winner has a good shot at QB2 value this season in head coach Chip Kelly's fast-paced offense, although Kaepernick may be in a rush against time to make his case.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert likely to start Sunday

Sat, 13 Aug 2016 10:55:07 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert appears likely to start the team's preseason opener against the Houston Texans Sunday, Aug. 14, although head coach Chip Kelly hasn't made an official announcement. QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) did not practice Friday, Aug. 12, and his status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

Fantasy Tip: Whichever quarterback wins the starting job should be viewed as a low-end QB2 in the majority of seasonal leagues. Gabbert appears to have a slight edge at this point due to his knowledge of the playbook, although Kaepernick has the higher fantasy upside.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not concerned

Fri, 12 Aug 2016 18:13:24 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) said he is not too concerned about his sore throwing shoulder and expects to be available for the preseason opener against the Houston Texans Sunday, Aug. 14.

Fantasy Tip: If Kaepernick can win the starting job during training camp, he will be worth a gamble as a midrange QB2.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick limited Friday

Fri, 12 Aug 2016 12:07:42 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) was limited during practice Friday, Aug. 12, because of a sore shoulder. He was expected to share first-team snaps with QB Blaine Gabbert during the first preseason game Sunday, Aug. 14, but the injury may change things.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is competing with Gabbert for the starting job but likely will need to play well in the preseason if he wants to win the job. He likely would be a No. 2 quarterback in most leagues if he starts and can be avoided if he is a backup.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick misses first practice

Thu, 11 Aug 2016 16:30:33 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) did not participate in practice Thursday, August 11. Head coach Chip Kelly said he took a "planned rest day," though no one notified the media of this before practice. He "appeared" to injure his throwing shoulder during practice Tuesday, August 9, and did not throw well the next day, missing a few receivers by more than five yards and completing only 52% of his throws.

Fantasy Tip: There could be something brewing here, as it looks like Kapenerick's performance in Wednesday's practice was affected by a potential injury he sustained on Tuesday. At the same time, it could be something minor, and with today's day off, perhaps Kap will return to form in practice on Friday if he suits up. Either way, San Francisco's quarterback competition battle looks like more of a toss-up than anything else, and at this point in time, it's a situation that should be avoided in most standard formats regarding both Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert.

49ers | San Francisco to split QB reps in games

Wed, 10 Aug 2016 12:03:58 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick will share snaps with the first-team offense during preseason games until the team is ready to name a starting quarterback, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert appears to be the leading candidate for the starting job at this point, but Kaepernick would win the job if he plays well during training camp. Kaepernick would have more fantasy value than Gabbert if he is the quarterback, but neither player will be a starting option in fantasy leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick lagging behind in race

Tue, 09 Aug 2016 18:12:08 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is considered a huge underdog in the race for the starting quarterback job with QB Blaine Gabbert, at least in the opinion of beat writer Tim Kawakami.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Gabbert is ahead of Kaepernick in his understanding of the offense and playbook, although this is simply opinion and ultimately it is the decision of the general manager and team president that will make the difference. The winner of the battle will be nothing more than a low-end QB2 in most fantasy formats.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick could run more

Thu, 04 Aug 2016 14:51:27 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has shown more of a willingness to run with the ball on zone read plays so far this offseason. Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said those runs have not been by design. "Our offense takes what the defense gives us," Modkins said. Kaepernick and QB Blaine Gabbert are in the midst of a position battle for the starting quarterback job.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick has more fantasy value than Gabbert because of his running ability, but neither are consistent options. Whoever wins the gig should be drafted as a fantasy backup.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick holding his own

Tue, 02 Aug 2016 21:47:44 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert have taken an equal amount of reps in practice with the first-team offense so far in training camp. Both have been sharper working with would-be starters than the second team. Head coach Chip Kelly noted the preseason games will be critical.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick and Gabbert are battling hard for the starting job, but whomever wins the job will be a low-end QB2 at best in most fantasy leagues. The only time the San Francisco starter should be active in fantasy is out of desperation due to injuries or bye weeks or in formats which require two starting signal callers.

49ers | San Francisco QBs will split reps

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 12:02:13 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert will split first-team repetitions "right down the middle," according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: This is one of the most intriguing quarterback battles to keep an eye throughout training camp and the preseason. It may come down to the wire, but whoever wins can be left on the waiver wire in traditional fantasy leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick cleared for camp

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 17:23:34 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has received medical clearance to participate fully in training camp, according to a source. Kaepernick had a torn left labrum repaired this offseason in addition to surgery on his right thumb and left knee.

Fantasy Tip: Let the battle begin for the starting quarterback position in San Francisco. Neither Kaepernick nor Blaine Gabbert has played impressively enough in recent years to warrant starter consideration in fantasy leagues, though. At best, draft the 49ers starter as a bye-week replacement.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert praised by Jerry Rice

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 09:36:25 -0700

Former San Francisco 49ers WR Jerry Rice praised QB Blaine Gabbert, who will be competing for the starting quarterback job with QB Colin Kaepernick in training camp. "I had an opportunity to meet him, and you can just tell the confidence. He feels he has a legitimate chance of being the starter. Then you got Colin Kaepernick, and I don't know if they're gonna be able to, you know, that offense of Chip Kelly because he likes to get over the ball, he likes constant movement and all of that," Rice said.

Fantasy Tip: It will be a very interesting development in training camp as to who comes out victorious in this QB battle under Chip Kelly's new high-octane offense. Whoever wins the job could be a QB2 sleeper with upside, but although Gabbert showed some poise at times in 2015, Kap's ceiling remains much higher for fantasy owners.

49ers | All eyes will be on QB battle

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 23:21:18 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick head into training camp battling for the starting job under center. Many in the organization feel Gabbert is a better fit in head coach Chip Kelly's offense, and he has a good grasp of the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is the better athlete, but Gabbert might be the better fit. Whomever wins the job in Frisco should be viewed as a Top 20 fantasy option at his position.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick excited about offense

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 14:41:55 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (knee, shoulder, thumb) said he is eager to run the offense that head coach Chip Kelly has brought to the team because it is similar to the one he used in college. He said he believes the new offense will give him more chances to run the ball.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick has not been able to practice this offseason because of multiple surgeries but should be ready for training camp. He will be competing with Blaine Gabbert but probably would only be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job during camp.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick looking to improve play

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 14:25:01 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (knee, shoulder, thumb) has tried to improve his flexibility this offseason by stretching his back because it would tighten up on him in the past. He is looking to become more limber so he can be a more elusive runner, according to a source. Kaepernick is also wearing contact lenses to help his short-area vision and has a tinted visor on his helmet to protect the contacts and reduce the sunlight in his eyes.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick will have to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job during training camp, so owners should keep an eye on the situation. Kaepernick probably has more fantasy value at this point, but the winner of the job should be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback in all leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick focused on football

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 15:52:50 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick doesn't anticipate any issues between him and the organization this season, even after requesting a trade earlier in the year. "I'm here, I'm a 49er, I'm excited for this offseason, the work that I can put in this summer to get ready for training camp and to come in and compete," Kaepernick said. Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee), who had multiple offseason surgeries, also expects to be healthier and bulkier when training camp rolls around.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick will battle with Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job in San Francisco. While Kaep is the more attractive fantasy option, neither should be viewed as a starting fantasy quarterback.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert the favorite at QB?

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 11:47:31 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is the "heavy favorite" to enter the 2016 as the starting quarterback, according to NFL Media columnist Michael Silver. QB Colin Kaepernick is "allegedly in competition" with Gabbert for the starting job. "He's loved in this locker room," Silver said of Gabbert. "He did a lot of good things last year and I'd be shocked if he's not the starter in the opener."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's surgeries in the offseason have kept him from taking part in organized team activities, so the real competition under center will take place in training camp. Kap has better physical abilities and more fantasy upside, but if he doesn't show well in camp, Gabbert could open Week 1 as the starter. There is upside for whoever starts in Chip Kelly's system, but neither should be taken as a pure QB1 in fantasy drafts this fall.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to do individual drills

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 10:45:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) isn't cleared to take part in the minicamp, but head coach Chip Kelly said that Kaepernick will do individual drills on the side.

Fantasy Tip: Kap is slowly making progress from the injuries he suffered in his forgettable 2015 campaign, but he should be good to go for training camp at the end of July. Barring a meltdown or setback with his injuries, he should win the starting job over Blaine Gabbert. In Kelly's up-tempo offense, Kaepernick has upside, but nobody should be drafting him as a straight up starting fantasy QB.

49ers | Niners QBs similar says Chip Kelly

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 10:53:17 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert are on similar ground, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "I think they're similar," Kelly told KGMZ-FM. "They have a similar skill set. They're both 6-foot-4-plus. They both can really run, which will help keep plays alive. Obviously we're not a quarterback-run offense, but if the quarterback can run, you can use a little of that to your advantage. And they both have extremely strong arms. So, from a skill set standpoint, the two of them are kind of cut out of the same mold."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is coming off a frustrating 2015 season that ended prematurely due to multiple injuries. But when healthy, he has more upside in real life and in fantasy than Gabbert does. Kelly's new up-tempo offense could be a great fit for Kapernick as he looks to rebound, but nobody should be willing to invest anything more than a midrange fantasy backup selection on him.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick out for minicamp

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 07:54:59 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) won't be cleared for minicamp this week, but the team is hoping he receives clearance closer to training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is the type of pick you take late in drafts as a low-end backup in hopes that you can catch lightning in a bottle if your starter flames out or is injured.

49ers | No timetable for Colin Kaepernick

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 14:49:13 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) does not have a timetable for when he will be cleared for football activities, according to offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins. Modkins said it's important that Kaepernick is cleared when he's healthy.

Fantasy Tip: The waiting game continues for Kaepernick and the 49ers. If San Francisco doesn't think Kaepernick can get fully healthy in time for training camp or the regular season, then Blaine Gabbert could be given the reins, if only temporarily. Neither one should be drafted as a starting fantasy quarterback, however.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick still not ready

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 05:40:15 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, knee, thumb) has still not been cleared to participate in practice but he has reported for every organized team activity this offseason. Kaepernick has been taking mental reps during practice. He is scheduled to receive a $400,000 bonus if he participates in at least 90% of the offseason workouts. Kaepernick may not receive clearance for full participation for the mandatory minicamp in a few weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick may not practice until training camp and will have to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job. He has had success in the past and could be the leading candidate for the job at this point. Kaepernick probably will be a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues if he is a starter.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not falling behind

Tue, 17 May 2016 12:35:35 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is not falling behind QB Blaine Gabbert despite still rehabilitating his injuries, according to head coach Chip Kelly. "[Kaepernick] has a great grasp of what we're doing," Kelly said. "I'm really impressed by both [Gabbert] and him and their intelligence and being able to pick up what we're trying to do." Kelly said he hasn't set a timetable for when the starter will be announced.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is still the most attractive fantasy option, but he may not start, obviously. Gabbert has disappointed throughout his career, but he'll have more intrigue in Kelly's offense. Neither are worthy of QB1 consideration, though.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick working hard

Tue, 17 May 2016 10:02:12 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has made a good first impression with his work ethic to the new coaching staff, despite asking for a trade earlier in the offseason. He could wind up starting in Week 1. "Works his butt off in rehab, great with the coaches, learning the offense quickly, I like him a lot," one coach said.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's fantasy value is the lowest it has been since he took over as starter a few seasons ago. He still has a cannon, and the fast-paced offense Chip Kelly brings could benefit him in getting the ball out. The weapons around him are still pretty questionable, and he's a midrange QB2 seeking a revival.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to compete when healthy

Sat, 14 May 2016 17:27:23 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) will compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job once training camp begins and Kaepernick is closer to full strength, head coach Chip Kelly said.

Fantasy Tip: If Kaepernick wins the starting gig, his dual-threat ability gives him intriguing upside in Kelly's offense, and he would be worth taking a chance on as a QB2.

49ers | San Francisco not ready to name QB

Fri, 13 May 2016 13:39:12 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) and QB Blaine Gabbert are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Chip Kelly said he has no idea who the starting quarterback will be in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick likely will be limited during offseason workouts because of several surgeries, so he will not compete with Gabbert until camp. Gabbert posted decent numbers in eight games in 2015, but Kaepernick likely would be a better option for fantasy owners if he starts. Kaepernick appears to be the leading candidate and can be a decent No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job, while Gabbert would be a low-end No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not cleared yet

Fri, 13 May 2016 13:17:30 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) has not been cleared to fully participate in offseason workouts at this point but may be able to participate during the mandatory minicamp in June.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick likely will have to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job during training camp. Kaepernick has had success in the past and could play well in Chip Kelly's offense. Owners should monitor the situation because Kaepernick could be a decent No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he starts.
