Dolphins | Miami will not match Charles Clay offer

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 08:20:34 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay's five-year, $38 million offer sheet he signed with the Buffalo Bills will not be matched by the Dolphins, according to a source. Clay will now become a member of the Bills.

Fantasy Tip: Clay will become the starting tight end for the Bills and should have a solid role in the passing game. Clay probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy tight end at this point because the Bills' uncertain quarterback situation. The Dolphins will go with Jordan Cameron as their starter, and he could be a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 tight end for owners.

Bills | Buffalo expected to land Charles Clay

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 11:49:27 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay is expected to land with the Buffalo Bills after signing a five-year, $38 million offer sheet with Buffalo Tuesday, March 17, according to a source. The Dolphins have five days to match the offer sheet, but they aren't expected to. Clay is set to make $24.5 million in the first two years of the deal. The total deal is only for $38 million for five years. Miami's last offer to Clay was for four years and $27 million, including less than $14 million guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: After the Dolphins signed Jordan Cameron to be their tight end, it was basically a foregone conclusion that Clay wouldn't be back in Miami. In Buffalo, he'll join a suddenly much more formidable offense. However, the quarterback situation remains unsettled, and Clay may get lost in the shuffle for aerial targets. He's probably best left as a midrange TE2 with some upside on draft day.

Bills | Charles Clay signs offer sheet from Bills

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 16:27:20 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay signed an offer sheet from the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, March 17. The Dolphins have five days to match the offer.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills offense is already stacked with RB LeSean McCoy and WRs Sammy Watkins and Percy Harvin. Clay would add to an already potent offense, but the problem is at quarterback, where either Matt Cassel or EJ Manuel will likely be starting. Mediocre quarterback play hinders Clay's value, but he should certainly be capable of low-end TE1 numbers in 2015.

Bills | Buffalo has good shot at Charles Clay

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 15:06:11 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay visited with the Buffalo Bills late last week, and the Bills have a "90%" chance of landing him, according to a source close to the situation. The Bills plan to follow through with their plan to sign him to an offer sheet. Head coach Rex Ryan has been the driving force in the pursuit of Clay. Buffalo continues to study their salary cap numbers and those of the Dolphins.

Fantasy Tip: Look for Clay to Buffalo to become official later this week. Clay will join a much different Buffalo offense under Ryan, and he probably won't receive enough targets to be anything more than a weak TE2 option. Clay could also be much more involved in the run game as a blocker.

Browns | Cleveland unlikely to land Charles Clay

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 14:59:10 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay is unlikely to sign with the Cleveland Browns, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Clay is expected to land with the Buffalo Bills and their retooled offense this offseason. Clay had his moments with the Dolphins, but he really wasn't anything more than a TE2 for fantasy owners. If he indeed signs with the Bills, he'll join a team with plenty of weapons on that side of the ball, and he could be asked to block more often in Rex Ryan's ground-and-pound offensive philosophy. Consider Clay a low-end TE2 if he goes to Buffalo.

Dolphins | Miami halts talks with Charles Clay

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 16:30:49 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay is no longer in contract talks with the team, and the Dolphins are waiting on an offer sheet from the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Tip: Unless the Bills offer is surprisingly low, it seems unlikely that Miami would be willing to match to retain Clay after just committing to another tight end, Jordan Cameron, in free agency. Assuming Clay does end up with the Bills, he has the potential to be a low-end TE1.

Miami Dolphins TE Charles Clay is no longer in the team's plans, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Bills | Buffalo will make offer to Charles Clay

Fri, 13 Mar 2015 14:06:21 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay will not receive an offer from the Buffalo Bills Friday, March 13, but the Bills will make an offer in the near future, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: The Dolphins are still trying to re-sign Clay, so it looks like he will have a choice to make in the near future. Clay likely would be the starting tight end if he signs with the Bills and would be a part of the passing game. Clay could be considered a No. 2 fantasy tight end if he joins the Bills with the chance to become a No. 1 tight end.

Dolphins | Charles Clay to sign extension with MIA?

Fri, 13 Mar 2015 10:40:21 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Charles Clay is still trying to be signed to a long-term extension.

Fantasy Tip: If Clay re-signs, it would give the Dolphins a formidable one-two punch at tight end with TE Jordan Cameron. Of course, they would each decrease each other's fantasy value as well. It would be difficult to consider either one a starting fantasy tight end if Clay does sign an extension.

Browns | Charles Clay visiting Cleveland

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 14:56:11 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Charles Clay is visiting the Cleveland Browns, according to Miami executive Mike Tannenbaum.

Fantasy Tip: It seems that the Dolphins, Browns and Buffalo Bills are all in the running for Clay's services, with Miami still probably being the best option as far as fantasy football is concerned. The Dolphins have the best quarterback of the three teams and just lost two pass-catchers in Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson.

Bills | Scott Chandler released by Bills

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 14:18:12 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Scott Chandler was released Wednesday, March 11. The Bills are preparing to make an offer to free-agent TE Charles Clay (Dolphins).

Fantasy Tip: Miami will still have the option to match Buffalo's offer, whatever it may be, but the fact of the matter is that the Bills need a tight end with Chandler gone. If Clay joins the Bills, he probably won't have as much fantasy appeal as he would in Miami, considering the Bills' mediocre quarterback situation.

Bills | Charles Clay headed to Buffalo?

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 16:19:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins TE Charles Clay is preparing to head to the Buffalo Bills, who are preparing an offer sheet for Clay that will make it difficult for the Dolphins to match, according to sources. Clay is reportedly looking for places to live in Buffalo. The Dolphins will have five days to match a deal that the Bills offer, and Buffalo wouldn't have to give up anything if they sign Clay.

Fantasy Tip: Clay had 58 catches for 605 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games for the Dolphins last season. Clay flashed signs of TE1 potential with Ryan Tannehill in Miami, and he could make the Bills more of a dynamic offense if he signs. However, Buffalo's uncertain quarterback situation will likely keep Clay in TE2 territory with room to grow.

Bills | Buffalo ready to sign Charles Clay

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 12:39:24 -0700

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay will likely receive an offer from the Buffalo Bills in the near future, according to a source. Buffalo reportedly has an offer ready for Clay once free agency officially begins Tuesday, March 10. However, Clay has already received a transition tag from Miami, so the Dolphins will have the first crack at re-signing the tight end.

Fantasy Tip: Clay's value would probably take a little bit of a dip if he does sign with Buffalo, though he would still be in the TE2 conversation. He'll have more value if he stays in Miami, especially since the Dolphins have already lost WRs Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson.

Bills | Buffalo may make offer to Charles Clay

Sun, 08 Mar 2015 08:11:50 -0700

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is expected to receive a multi-year offer from the Buffalo Bills, according to a source. The Dolphins placed the transition tag on Clay and would have seven days to match the offer if he signs with the Bills.

Fantasy Tip: Clay likely will be a starting tight end wherever he signs this offseason. Clay saw a small dip in his stats this past season but still caught 58 passes and three touchdowns. Clay could be a low-end No. 1 tight end or a No. 2 tight end entering drafts next season.

Fantasy Tip: Clay had a relatively disappointing 2014 campaign compared to the 2013 season, but he did miss two games. When healthy, Clay has TE1 potential, especially with QB Ryan Tannehill seemingly coming into his own.

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 10:39:07 -0800

Fantasy Tip: Clay likely will have several suitors if he hits the free-agent market and should be able to find a starting job. Clay's value will be determined by which team he joins, but he probably will be a low-end No. 1 tight end or a No. 2 tight end in drafts next season.

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is a player the Buffalo Bills are considering pursuing in free agency.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills are expected to look for tight ends this offseason, and Clay may be the best one available in free agency. Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay may not be an option for the New England Patriots after all once free agency commences, according to Boston Herald beat reporter Jeff Howe.

Sun, 25 Jan 2015 07:34:02 -0800

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is a player that the Dolphins would like to re-sign and are expected to offer him a contract in the next few weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Clay saw a dip in his status from 2013 to 2014 but was still third on the team with 84 targets. Clay likely would continue to be the starting tight end if he returns to the Dolphins and likely would be a low-end No. 1 tight end or a solid backup in drafts.

Dolphins | Charles Clay unlikely to receive tag

Mon, 12 Jan 2015 12:51:02 -0800

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay likely will not receive the franchise tag this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Clay has posted solid numbers in the last two seasons, but should not be a candidate for the franchise tag. Clay probably will be a starting tight end in 2015, but should be considered as a low-end No. 1 tight end or solid backup in most fantasy drafts.

Fantasy Tip: Clay is coming off a terrific Week 16 performance and has caught at least five passes in five of his last six games, which makes him valuable in point-per-reception leagues. Dolphins | Charles Clay listed as doubtful

Fri, 21 Nov 2014 14:48:09 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Charles Clay (knee) did not practice Friday, Nov. 21, and he is doubtful for Week 12 against the Denver Broncos. Clay suffered a setback in practice this week, and he's been nursing a sore right knee since training camp. TE Dion Sims would replace Clay in the starting lineup, with TE Gator Hoskins serving as the backup. Sims has caught nine passes for 124 yards and a touchdown this year. Miami is expected to use more three- and four-tight end sets if Clay is out.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Clay at FantasyScore, and with the Dolphins expected to use heavy tight ends sets in Clay's absence, Sims ($3,000) probably isn't worth consideration against the Broncos, either.
