Broncos | Virgil Green makes presence felt

Thu, 04 Aug 2016 19:01:33 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green caught four touchdowns in red-zone drills during practice Thursday, Aug. 4.

Fantasy Tip: If Green carves out a steady role in the red zone, he could become a useful option in daily games and a decent TE2 in season-long leagues this year.

Broncos | Big year for tight ends in Denver?

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 19:35:55 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green said Thursday, July 28, this year's offense will be more tight end friendly because of the current group of quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: While tight ends may be used more in pass-catching roles in 2016, it remains to be seen whether it will be Virgil Green, Jeff Heuerman or Garrett Graham who emerges as the No. 1 option. The eventual starter could have value as a TE2.

Broncos | Three Broncos cleared for camp

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 13:12:44 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Jeff Heuerman (hamstring, knee), TE Virgil Green (finger) and LB Brandon M. Marshall (finger) have been cleared to participate during training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Heuerman and Green are the top candidates to start at tight end this season and both should receive solid playing time in 2016. The winner of the starting job probably should be considered a low-end No. 2 tight end in most leagues. Heuerman could be a decent option in keeper leagues.

Broncos | Virgil Green could break out

Wed, 13 Jul 2016 23:03:44 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green could become a potent weapon in the offense as his presence and blocking ability wouldn't tip the team's hand in their intended play call. He has 35 receptions for 379 yards and two touchdowns in his five-year career, and the team hopes he can significantly exceed those in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Green will have Garrett Graham and Jeff Heuerman to contend with, but he could be a sleeper in training camp. He's nothing more than a wild-card TE2 right now.

Broncos | Virgil Green works on the side

Tue, 31 May 2016 19:54:52 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green (finger) participated during the individuals drills at organized team activities (OTAs) Tuesday, May 31, and then he worked off to the side. He is recovering from surgery on his finger.

Fantasy Tip: Green is known more for his blocking prowess than his pass-catching ability, but he, veteran Garrett Graham or Jeff Heuerman could see more responsibilities catching the ball unless the team looks outside of the organization to fortify the position. One might emerge as a useful low-end fantasy option if the roster remains the same into the season.

Broncos | Virgil Green had surgery

Tue, 24 May 2016 12:40:18 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green (finger) had surgery on his finger and will miss most of organized team activities, according to head coach Gary Kubiak.

Fantasy Tip: Green is expected to receive more pass-catching opportunities this season, but he'll have to compete with Garrett Graham and Jeff Heuerman, too. None of the three should be considered a TE1.

Broncos | Virgil Green wants to prove himself

Mon, 16 May 2016 11:47:12 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green said he wants to prove in training camp that he can be an every-down tight end. It was reported earlier that Green could have a bigger role in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Green is quickly turning into a sleeper candidate at the tight end position, but he'll have Garrett Graham and Jeff Heuerman with whom to compete. He's not a viable fantasy consideration at this point.

Broncos | Bigger role for Virgil Green?

Mon, 16 May 2016 11:08:50 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green could see more opportunities in 2016 after a career-high 12 catches last season, according to Mike Klis of 9news.com.

Fantasy Tip: Garrett Graham and Jeff Heuerman are more intriguing from a fantasy perspective, but Green could very well produce more than he did last year. That being said, Green is not a viable fantasy consideration unless perhaps Heuerman aggravates his knee injury.

Broncos | Vernon Davis buried on depth chart

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 14:03:49 -0800

Denver Broncos TE Vernon Davis has been passed on the tight end depth chart by TEs Owen Daniels and Virgil Green, mainly after struggling with drops in Week 15 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The return of QB Peyton Manning as the starting quarterback hasn't helped, either. Davis' opportunities will continue to be limited.

Fantasy Tip: Davis doesn't have any catches or targets since the Week 15 loss to the Steelers, and he's highly unlikely to make an impact in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots.

Broncos | Vernon Davis' role diminishing

Tue, 05 Jan 2016 13:09:50 -0800

Denver Broncos TE Vernon Davis has put himself in a difficult spot because of crucial drops in recent weeks, and his playing time hasn't been helped by the fact that the Broncos have been running more of an up-tempo offense of late. TEs Owen Daniels and Virgil Green are more comfortable working at a quicker pace.

Fantasy Tip: Davis has no catches in the last two weeks and just one catch for five yards in the last three games. Daniels has clearly overtaken Davis as the go-to tight end, so you should be ignoring Davis from here on out on FantasyScore.

Broncos | Vernon Davis, Owen Daniels show well

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 22:17:29 -0800

Denver Broncos TE Vernon Davis posted seven receptions for 74 yards in the Week 14 game against the Oakland Raiders, his best performance since joining the team. TE Owen Daniels also checked in with three grabs for 43 yards, while TE Virgil Green was blanked on just one target.

Fantasy Tip: Davis could be a solid FantasyScore value down the stretch if he performs like this on a regular basis, but his growth could be stunted if the team goes back to Peyton Manning in Week 15 once he is healthy. Stay tuned.

Broncos | Full practice for Virgil Green

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 16:13:25 -0800

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green (finger) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Green ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) has really only had two good weeks this year, so he's too risky of a play on FantasyScore, especially with Vernon Davis ($3,100, 6.2%) and Owen Daniels ($3,500, 7.0%) also in the mix.

Broncos | Denver TEs get involved

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 22:19:44 -0800

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green posted three catches for 61 yards in the Week 8 game against the Green Bay Packers, while TE Owen Daniels managed three grabs for 44 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Green ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) was a huge value in FantasyScore, although not many used him. Daniels ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is the more popular pick, but as long as he is sharing targets with Green he has little appeal in FantasyScore.

Broncos | Denver TEs not cutting it

Fri, 23 Oct 2015 16:51:05 -0700

Denver Broncos TEs Owen Daniels and Virgil Green have combined for just 17 catches on 34 targets for 113 yards and two touchdowns this year. At this time last year, TE Julius Thomas was targeted 36 times for 28 catches, 304 yards and nine touchdowns. Daniels has always done well in a similar offense but is averaging only 6.1 yards per catch, which is four yards fewer than his career low.

If Daniels doesn't improve, the Broncos may be forced to look for a trade for a player like San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis, St. Louis Rams TE Jared Cook or Chicago Bears TE Martellus Bennett. WR Jordan Norwood is improving in the slot role, but QB Peyton Manning doesn't fully trust him yet. Norwood hasn't been targeted more than three times since Week 2.

Fantasy Tip: Daniels ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has been a little beat up but hasn't been able to get separation from opposing linebackers at his age. He is basically touchdown-dependent, making him a weak FantasyScore option. Green ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) is mainly used for run blocking and can be ignored everywhere.

Broncos | Virgil Green wants to improve

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 13:57:55 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green said he needs to improve his protection after the Broncos' preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks last week. Green said he has high expectations for his blocking and that it wasn't good at all versus Seattle. Green did succeed in the passing game, however, catching five passes, including a touchdown, in his limited playing time. Green said his route-running is better, he understands coverages better and he is having fun.

Fantasy Tip: Green should take a second seat to Owen Daniels in the passing game, but he could be good for a touchdown and some short yardage here and there. He's only worth drafting if you want three tight ends on your roster.

Broncos | Virgil Green dealing with injuries

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 10:52:25 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green (foot, toe) is dealing with foot and toe injuries, according to head coach Gary Kubiak.

Fantasy Tip: Green is listed as the backup tight end to Owen Daniels for Denver. While Daniels could see plenty of red zone opportunities, Green is the better blocker and could be on the field often. He probably won't receive enough targets to be worth drafting in standard leagues, though.

Broncos | Virgil Green to be eased in

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 17:14:24 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green (hamstring) will be eased in slowly during training camp, as a precaution for the hamstring issues that slowed him down during minicamp.

Fantasy Tip: Green will compete with Owen Daniels for playing time and targets, although Green is considered to have the higher upside, if he is able to start the season on time.

Broncos | Virgil Green expected to see more targets

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 11:47:04 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green is expected to receive more playing time this season and receive more targets than he has had in the past.

Fantasy Tip: Green has not had more than nine receptions in any season since he joined the NFL but should have a bigger role this season. Green probably should not be selected in drafts this season but could be a waiver wire option during the season.

Broncos | Denver tight ends to form platoon?

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 12:35:57 -0700

Denver Broncos TEs Owen Daniels and Virgil Green could both see enough snaps this season to be considered starters, according to Andrew Mason of denverbroncos.com.

Fantasy Tip: Green has been known throughout his career as more of a blocking tight end, while Daniels is viewed as more of a passing threat. Daniels has proven to be the better receiver. He holds more fantasy value in this offense and should be taken as a TE2.

Broncos | Virgil Green worked with star QB

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 19:53:56 -0700

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green worked out with QB Peyton Manning during his sessions at Duke University this offseason. It is another indication he could be ready to see starter-type snaps in the regular season, even with the addition of TE Owen Daniels.

Fantasy Tip: Green has generally been a blocker for most of his reps, but he is likely to factor more into the offense this season. Think Jacob Tamme's role from the past, and that will give you a sense of Green's fantasy appeal. Unless Daniels suffers a long-term injury, Green is still best left to the waiver wire in most leagues, although his role is increasing.

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 15:20:17 -0800

Denver Broncos impending free-agent LB Nate Irving, C Will Montgomery and TEs Virgil Green and Jacob Tamme are priorities to be re-signed this offseason. However, Irving figures to test the free-agent market with LBs Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall set as inside linebackers. Broncos | Virgil Green continues to play

Tue, 16 Dec 2014 14:21:23 -0800

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green continued to lead the team's tight ends in snaps with 50 in Week 15 against the San Diego Chargers, even with TE Julius Thomas (ankle) back on the field. Thomas played just 29 snaps in his first game back from injury. OT Chris Clark also lined up as an extra tight end for seven snaps in the team's first two possessions. TE Dominique Jones played four snaps at tight end.

Fantasy Tip: Green's excellent run-blocking ability has led to his increased playing time, as well as Thomas' injury. Thomas ($6,500) should start to see more snaps as he gets closer to 100 percent health, though. Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals may not be the time to put full trust back in Thomas, though, as the Bengals have held tight ends to an average of just 3.48 fantasy points in the last four weeks.

Broncos | Virgil Green key to running game

Tue, 02 Dec 2014 09:58:17 -0800

Denver Broncos TE Virgil Green has helped the team rush for 201 and 214 yards, respectively, in the last two games with TE Julius Thomas (ankle) out with an injury. Green has also been absent for all three of the team's losses this season because of injury. "A lot of people are saying I'm the magic potion, but it's all of us," Green said. "We decided to come to a resolve to do what we have to do to win games. If that means running the ball, then we have to do that. If it means passing, we'll do that. We're just trying to do what we can to win games." Thomas can be an effective backside blocker, but Green is better at the point of attack and at setting the edge. Thomas is expected to be eased back into his role when he returns from injury, but there is room for both of these tight ends in the offense moving forward.

Fantasy Tip: The running game has become paramount in Denver's offense now, making Green much more important. He's not an option for FantasyScore lineups, however. Thomas is clearly the better pass catcher and offensive weapon, but be careful of spending the $7,200 on him if he returns to face the Buffalo Bills this weekend, especially if the Broncos plan to ease Thomas back in in a rotation with Green.
