Dolphins | Julius Thomas finally healthy

Tue, 14 Mar 2017 09:47:18 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is finally healthy after battling back, finger and ankle injuries. "I don't really have any handicaps, anything that will hold me back," Thomas said. "... I feel really good. I know that I'll be able to play at the highest level I've played in my career."

Fantasy Tip: Reunited with Adam Gase, Thomas hopes to regain some of his glory from the 2013 and '14 seasons in which he scored a total of 24 times. He is too risky for TE1 status, but there is weekly flex consideration and daily gaming worth here. Thomas has to compete with three viable receivers for touches in an offense that figures to run the ball as much as possible to shield Ryan Tannehill.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas expendable due to blocking woes

Sun, 26 Feb 2017 11:45:21 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas wore out his welcome with the Jacksonville Jaguars in part due to his limitations as a blocker, according to a source, which called Thomas' blocking "non-existent".

Fantasy Tip: A former college basketball player, Thomas has never been a great blocker, so his struggles in that facet of the game certainly shouldn't have come as a surprise to the Jaguars, who will officially deal him to the Dolphins at the start of the new league year on March 9. Miami head coach Adam Gase was Thomas' offensive coordinator during his best years with the Denver Broncos and should be able to help his pupil climb back to low-end TE1 status in fantasy.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas passes physical

Wed, 22 Feb 2017 06:00:24 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas passed his physical with the club Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas will be in a familiar system he thrived in with the Denver Broncos, and he has a quarterback that has a knack of throwing to tight ends. It could be a great spot for him if he can stay healthy. He's a bounce-back pick as a TE2.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas wanted to reunite with old OC

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 20:09:29 -0800

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas restructured his contract in order to land with the Dolphins because he wanted to reunite with head coach Adam Gase, who was his old offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: It makes sense, as Gase runs the same system in Miami that he did in Denver, where Thomas absolutely thrived during his final two years with the club. In fact, the 28-year-old produced consecutive 12-touchdown campaigns with the Broncos, before disappointing greatly as a member of the Jaguars, with whom he scored a total of just nine touchdowns in 21 contests. As long as he can stay healthy, an extra-motivated Thomas could be a terrific value pick at the end of drafts next season.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas reworks deal

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 15:46:28 -0800

Miami Dolphins impending TE Julius Thomas agreed to restructure his contract as part of his trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Dolphins, according to a source. Thomas was scheduled to count $8.3 million against the salary cap in 2017, $9.8 million in 2018 and $10.3 million in 2019 before the restructuring.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has had success in an Adam Gase offense when he played for the Denver Broncos and should have a solid role in the Dolphins passing game if he can stay healthy. Thomas has the ability of be a No. 1 fantasy tight end, but owners may want to consider him a better No. 2 tight end because of his injury history.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas being sent to Miami

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 14:24:50 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is being traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a late-round 2017 draft pick Monday, Feb. 20.

Fantasy Tip: The departure of Thomas means Marcedes Lewis and Ben Koyacek are likely the top candidates to take over the starting job, at least for now. The Jaguars could obviously add a tight end via free agency or the NFL Draft. If nothing changes, neither Lewis nor Koyacek should be drafted as TE1s.

Dolphins | Miami acquiring Julius Thomas

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 14:16:07 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is being acquired by the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a late-round 2017 draft pick Monday, Feb. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has really come down to earth after two 12-touchdown seasons with the Denver Broncos. Injuries have plagued him throughout his career, too. The Dolphins are hoping for the Thomas of old with this trade, and he could be a valuable receiving threat, particularly in the red zone. That being said, expectations should be tempered. It's safer to draft Thomas as a backup fantasy tight end after he missed seven games last season.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas not headed to Miami?

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 09:38:15 -0800

Updating previous reports, Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is no longer a part of the trade package designed to acquire Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert.

Fantasy Tip: There could be any number of reasons for this development, although the most likely are the Jaguars got cold feet or reasoned Thomas was worth more than the late-round pick they are reportedly giving up now to get Albert. Although a trade has reportedly been agreed to, expect more updates in the hours and days ahead before the trade can be officially consummated. If Thomas remains in Jacksonville, he's a high-end TE2 at best.

Jaguars | Branden Albert visiting Jaguars

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 05:41:12 -0800

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert is visiting the Jacksonville Jaguars Monday, Feb. 20, to help facilitate a trade involving TE Julius Thomas. The trade would likely happen if both players agree to new deals. Thomas may need to take a small pay cut, and Albert could receive a bonus.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas' fantasy value could rejuvenate, but he has to stay on the field. He's a TE2 in fantasy at this point.

Dolphins | Miami still pursuing Julius Thomas

Sun, 19 Feb 2017 16:20:06 -0800

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert could be traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for TE Julius Thomas, according to league sources, and Albert said he wouldn't "ruffle feathers" if he was traded.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas was underutilized in Jacksonville, and he has battled injuries throughout his career. However, he also has a couple of strong years under his belt. He is worth grabbing as a TE2 in 2017 in case he returns to form.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas an option for Miami?

Fri, 17 Feb 2017 11:51:41 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas could be included in a trade that would send Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert to the Jaguars, in the opinion of The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero. Head coach Adam Gase coached Thomas when they were both with the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas is a solid contributor when he is healthy but has been limited to 21 games over the last two years because of injuries. He probably would be the starting tight end if he joined the Dolphins but would be a risky option for fantasy owners. He probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy tight end next season.

Jaguars | No bonus for Julius Thomas this week

Fri, 10 Feb 2017 14:34:57 -0800

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is not scheduled to receive a roster bonus this week but is scheduled to receive a $3 million bonus Thursday, March 9, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Earlier reports indicated that Thomas was going to receive a bonus this week, but the Jaguars have a few more weeks to make a decision on Thomas. He has played well when he is healthy but has missed 11 games since signing with the Jaguars. Thomas should be considered a No. 2 tight end in fantasy leagues next season because of his injury history.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas due large guarantee

Fri, 10 Feb 2017 10:29:58 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas' contract calls for $3 million of his $7 million base salary for 2017 to become fully guaranteed at the end of the day Friday, Feb. 10, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: This obviously means if the Jaguars are going to part ways with Thomas this offseason, today would be a good day to make it happen. Jacksonville doesn't really need the cap space, but Thomas has been something of an injury-riddled disappointment in two years with the Jags. Ben Koyack flashed some potential throughout the season and could emerge as a serviceable fantasy TE2 in 2017 if Thomas is cut.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas struggles with injuries

Mon, 06 Feb 2017 15:32:22 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas has missed 11 of 32 games since signing with the Jaguars because of various injuries but has caught nine touchdowns during those games. His $7 million salary for 2017 will be guaranteed if he is on the roster March 13.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has not played a full season since he entered the league and was limited to nine games in 2016. He has been productive when he has been on the field, but he could be released this offseason because of his injury history. He will be a risky option for fantasy owners no matter where he plays and probably should only be considered a No. 2 fantasy tight end.

Jaguars | Jaguars expected to cut Julius Thomas

Tue, 17 Jan 2017 19:40:25 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is expected to be released by the team this offseason, according to ESPN's Mike DiRocco. He has the fourth-highest cap figure ($8.3 million) in 2017.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has been mostly a bust since signing with the Jags in 2015, after putting up some impressive numbers during his tenure in Denver. It hasn't all been his fault, though, as the former Bronco has missed 11 games over two seasons with the club thanks to injury, and Jacksonville has him run a lot of short routes when he's more successful down the field and on seam routes. He needs a change of scenery to regain his TE1 status.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas injury update

Sun, 18 Dec 2016 08:13:02 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (tailbone) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list last week because of a fractured tailbone, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Thomas will stay with the Jaguars next season, but he probably will start with someone in 2017. He has struggled with injuries throughout his career and should only be a No. 2 tight end in leagues next season.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas done in Jacksonville?

Sat, 10 Dec 2016 17:28:52 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) will end up missing 11 games in two years with the team after being placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 10, and he could be released after the season, according to beat writer Mike DiRocco.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has been a huge disappointment for Jacksonville, and injuries continue to derail his career. He has shown he can be a TE1 in the right system, but he won't be worth drafting in most leagues next year if he ends up back in Jacksonville.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas placed on IR

Sat, 10 Dec 2016 12:30:47 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Ben Koyack and Neal Sterling probably will share playing time at tight end but neither player should be a starting option in any fantasy leagues.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas ruled out

Fri, 09 Dec 2016 08:33:52 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) has been ruled out for Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Neil Sterling had a mini-breakout last week with five catches for 43 yards. He'll be an option in DFS leagues if you're looking for a low-end filler against the Minnesota Vikings.

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 8.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas misses practice

Wed, 07 Dec 2016 13:19:07 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) did not practice Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas didn't practice all of last week either, so he could be heading for another absence. If he sits again then Ben Koyacek and Neal Sterling would split duties at tight end, but neither see enough volume to start in fantasy leagues.

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 08:42:32 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) has been ruled out for Week 13's game versus the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas did not practice at all during the week and was listed as doubtful on the injury report. Ben Koyack and Neal Sterling are expected to split time at tight end while he is sidelined but neither player should be viewed as a viable fantasy option.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas doubtful

Fri, 02 Dec 2016 08:36:36 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) is doubtful for Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has been a shell of himself this year, and the team doesn't have a suitable replacement for fantasy purposes. Marcedes Lewis would be a basement option in DFS if you're looking to ration salary cap space.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas sits again

Fri, 02 Dec 2016 07:52:55 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) remains out of practice Friday, Dec. 2.

Thu, 01 Dec 2016 10:00:30 -0800

Jaguars | No practice for Julius Thomas

Wed, 30 Nov 2016 13:40:11 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas did not play in Week 12 and could miss another game if he does not practice this week. He has not been a big factor in the passing game in the last few weeks, so owners should avoid using him even if he plays.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas ruled out

Fri, 25 Nov 2016 08:24:34 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) has been ruled out for Week 12.

Fantasy Tip: If you're looking to catch lightning in a bottle, Ben Koyack has the matchup to do it against the Buffalo Bills. They've yielded the fourth-most points per game to tight ends in PPR leagues the last five weeks. Koyack has a five-catch game this season and would be a shot in the dark maybe worth consideration.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas quiet in Week 9

Sun, 06 Nov 2016 15:06:05 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas caught two passes for 21 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas practices in full

Fri, 04 Nov 2016 16:23:25 -0700

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (elbow) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 4, and is not on the injury report for Week 9.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has not posted big numbers over the last few weeks but should still have a role in the passing game in Week 9. Thomas could be a low-end No. 1 tight end in deeper leagues as a bye week replacement, but owners in most leagues should be able to find better options.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas removed from injury report

Fri, 04 Nov 2016 12:29:50 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) is no longer on the Week 9 injury report and is expected to play in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the good news, Thomas is going to be hard to use this week. Not only has he failed to eclipse 30 yards receiving in any of his last four games, but he also figures to see plenty of safety Eric Berry, who usually shadows the opponent's top tight end. Kansas City has surrendered only four touchdowns to tight ends since Week 11 of the 2014 season, which is bad news for the touchdown-dependent Thomas. Owners need to look for other options this week.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas practices in full

Thu, 03 Nov 2016 20:29:19 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) returned to practice Thursday, Nov. 3, and got in a full session.

Fantasy Tip: This should ensure he plays in Week 9. While it won't be an easy matchup opposite a Chiefs defense that is solid against tight ends, Thomas will enter this one having scored in two straight contests. However, he's a touchdown-dependent option at tight end, as he hasn't secured more than three receptions or topped 30 receiving yards since Week 2.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas sits out Wednesday

Wed, 02 Nov 2016 13:38:33 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has dealt with injuries throughout the season but has been able to play in most weeks. He has not posted more than 28 yards in any of the last four games and should only be a low-end No. 1 tight end in deeper leagues.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas active for TNF vs. Titans

Thu, 27 Oct 2016 16:57:38 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) is active for the team's Week 8 matchup Thursday, Oct. 27, against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Tip: He was questionable entering this contest, but even so, it's hard to lean on the former Denver Bronco right now in any standard leagues based on his production as of late, not to mention the fact that he's probably at less than 100 percent health. Over his last three games, Thomas has combined for just 61 receiving yards on seven catches, though he did manage to find the end zone last week. He's starting to fall into TE2 territory if he can't turn things back around.

Wed, 26 Oct 2016 11:13:56 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 26, and is listed as questionable for Week 8.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will have to check the inactive list to see if Thomas will be able to play against the Tennessee Titans this week. He has not posted more than 28 yards in any of the last three games and probably can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas held out of practice

Tue, 25 Oct 2016 16:00:05 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Fantasy Tip: It's concerning that Thomas didn't practice today after practicing yesterday, especially in a short week. If Thomas doesn't practice tomorrow then he'll probably be doubtful for Thursday night's contest. Marcedes Lewis would start if Thomas does not play, but Lewis isn't a capable TE1 like Thomas is.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas also limited

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 16:24:48 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) was limited in practice Monday, Oct. 24. The Jaguars did not practice; the limited status is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas was the silver lining of the Jaguars' Week 7 loss, but he just can't be trusted as a weekly TE1 with Blake Bortles sporadic play. His injury and possible jet lag via going to London could also be negative factors.

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 20:31:51 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) posted three grabs for 20 yards and a touchdown in the Week 7 game against the Oakland Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: The touchdown was nice for Thomas, his first since Week 1, but the yardage total stunk for the third straight game. He can no longer be trusted as a TE1 until he starts to produce like he did back in the first two games when he had nine grabs for 135 yards and a score.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas active for Week 7

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 09:13:28 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) is officially active for the team's Week 7 game.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has not made a big impact in the passing game at this point and has recorded only 41 yards in the last two games. He could be considered a low-end No. 1 tight end in Week 7 because of the matchup.

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 18:43:19 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas' 13 receptions this year rank 28th among tight ends, and he hasn't been targeted in the red zone this season.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have played a part in Thomas' lack of production, but his tenure with the Jaguars continues to be underwhelming. He is a low-end TE1 candidate against the Raiders in Week 7.

Fri, 21 Oct 2016 16:39:55 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 21, and is listed as questionable for Week 7.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas' status is uncertain at this point, so owners will need to check the inactive list to see if he will play. Jaguars | Julius Thomas quiet in Week 6

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 14:58:42 -0700

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas caught two passes for 25 yards against the Chicago Bears in Week 6.
