Dolphins | Julius Thomas stepping up

Sat, 02 Dec 2017 19:50:31 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has logged at least 30 receiving yards in three of the last four games after reaching 30 receiving yards just once in his first seven games.

Fantasy Tip: If you need tight end help, Thomas could be worth streaming in Week 13 against a Denver Broncos defense that has allowed the likes of Tyler Kroft and Dwayne Allen to score in recent weeks.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas good for five catches

Sun, 26 Nov 2017 16:40:39 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas picked up five receptions for 52 yards on six targets in Week 12 against the New England Patriots.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has been a bigger part of the offensive attack lately, posting four or more receptions in three of the past four outings, at two or more grabs in seven in a row and 10 of 11 overall. He is still more of a TE2 in most fantasy leagues due to his middling yardage totals.

Dolphins | Four grabs for Julius Thomas

Sun, 19 Nov 2017 17:38:50 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas posted four receptions for 30 yards in Week 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has enjoyed his most productive stretch of the season over the past three games, hauling in 12 balls for 122 yards and two touchdowns on 17 targets. He is still more of a low-end TE1 in most fantasy leagues of 12 or more yards, and it remains to be seen if he'll have the same rapport with Matt Moore as he did with Jay Cutler, should the latter be sidelined due to concussion.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas might not return in 2018

Sun, 19 Nov 2017 07:50:32 -0800

The Miami Dolphins are likely to cut TE Julius Thomas during the offseason in order to clear up $6.6 million in salary cap space for 2018, barring an incredible final two months of the 2017 season.

Fantasy Tip: The 29-year-old Thomas has 25 receptions for 260 yards and two touchdowns through nine games this year. He shouldn't be owned outside of deeper seasonal fantasy leagues.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas makes it two in a row with TD

Mon, 13 Nov 2017 21:37:25 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas scored a touchdown for the second straight week -- after having none previously in the first seven games -- in the team's Week 10 loss Monday, Nov. 13, versus the Carolina Panthers. He finished the game with two catches for eight yards on five targets.

Fantasy Tip: Although his stats outside of the touchdown were not pretty, it's still encouraging that Thomas has garnered five or more targets in consecutive games for the first time all season. Clearly, Jay Cutler is looking his way more, and that could vault Thomas back onto the TE1 radar. However, given how disappointing he was prior to the last two weeks, he's still mainly a streaming option in standard formats for now.

Dolphins | There's a Julius Thomas sighting Sunday

Mon, 06 Nov 2017 05:46:34 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas caught six balls for 84 yards and a touchdown Sunday, Nov. 5, against the Oakland Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: He had a 17-168-0 line entering the game and can't be trusted beyond a backup in fantasy.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas gains two yards

Thu, 26 Oct 2017 21:40:56 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas caught two passes for two yards in Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy Tip: Any hopes that were raised by Thomas' 58-yard output in Week 7 were dashed just as quickly Thursday night. During the broadcast Tony Romo noted the team preferred Anthony Fasano on the field for his attention to detail, which isn't good news for Thomas' long-term prospects, either. He's probably not worth owning outside of larger leagues.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas not on injury report

Wed, 25 Oct 2017 15:10:36 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 25, and is not on the injury report for Week 8.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has been targeted 13 times over the last three games, but it is not known if his role with change with Matt Moore as the quarterback. Owners may want to see his performance this week before considering him a starting option.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas full go Tuesday

Tue, 24 Oct 2017 14:40:00 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (knee) practiced in full Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has done next to nothing through the first seven weeks of the season. His fortunes may change with Matt Moore under center, but don't banking on him to rebound just like that is a fool's hope.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas listed as limited

Mon, 23 Oct 2017 13:15:09 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (knee) was limited during practice Monday, Oct. 23. The Dolphins did not hold a practice Monday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas is coming off his best game of the season with 58 yards and has been targeted at least five times in each of the last five games. He can be owned in deeper leagues but should not be a starting option this week.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas finishes with 58 yards

Sun, 22 Oct 2017 18:27:17 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas managed three catches for 58 yards on four targets in Week 7 against the New York Jets.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas heads into Week 8 against the Ravens still searching for his first touchdown of the season. He remains more of a TE2 fantasy option despite the season high in yardage.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas posts 29 yards

Sun, 01 Oct 2017 09:56:10 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas caught two passes for 29 yards against the New Orleans Saints in Week 4.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas was expected to have success in the offense since he has played for Adam Gase before, but he only has eight receptions and 71 yards in the first three games. Thomas can be owned in deeper leagues but should not be in the starting lineup next week.

Dolphins | Miami hoping to get Julius Thomas involved

Sat, 30 Sep 2017 08:27:53 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has yet to add the spark over the middle of the field, but head coach Adam Gase puts the blame on his offense for failing to get defenses to get out of zone coverage. "We haven't gotten the coverages that make (Thomas) a difference maker. When you flex him out and you put a safety or linebacker on him, that's an advantage for us. But we really haven't seen that," Gase said.

Fantasy Tip: Gase's explanation makes sense, as he seems to be putting the onus on his receivers for failing to make defenses pay for playing too much zone. This also has an negative impact for Jay Ajayi as well since defenses can load the box and all 11 defenders can keep their eye on Ajayi. Gase will likely get it worked out soon, but Thomas is a low-end TE2 in fantasy until he is able to show something.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas improving chemistry

Thu, 14 Sep 2017 11:11:52 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has improved his chemistry with QB Jay Cutler over the last few weeks and has caught several touchdowns during practice.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has been a productive player when he has been on the field but has dealt with injuries that have hurt his value over the years. It appears like he will have a big role in the red zone this season and could be a low-end No. 1 tight end because of his touchdown potential.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas out of practice

Mon, 14 Aug 2017 06:39:48 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (back) is out of practice Monday, Aug. 14.

Fantasy Tip: The oft-injured tight end could still be a useful backup in fantasy, but his ceiling is pretty low compared to where it once was.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas struggling

Sun, 18 Jun 2017 20:23:15 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has been a non-factor in practices and appears to have chemistry issues with QB Ryan Tannehill, according to Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel.

Fantasy Tip: The Dolphins are hoping that Thomas can be the weapon he was in Denver and not the bust he was in Jacksonville, but the early returns don't sound encouraging. You can stash him as a TE2 in case he returns to form, but don't count on him being a fantasy starter.

Dolphins | OC optimistic about Julius Thomas

Wed, 07 Jun 2017 11:52:12 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has the chance to be a 10-touchdoown player if he can stay healthy, according to offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has played well when he is healthy, but the problem is that he has not played more than 14 games in any season since entering the NFL. He should have a solid role in the passing game this upcoming season and probably should be considered as a No. 2 fantasy tight end because of his injury history.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas to be heavily involved?

Tue, 06 Jun 2017 11:57:42 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is going to be a big part of the Dolphins' offensive plans in 2017, according to QB Matt Moore.

Fantasy Tip: A big reason for the excitement surrounding Thomas is that he is reunited with Adam Gase. Thomas easily produced the best football of his career in Denver when Gase was the Broncos' offensive coordinator. Healthy has been an issue for Thomas, though. If he can stay on the field he has TE1 upside, but he's better drafted as a TE2.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas poised for big year

Wed, 31 May 2017 10:36:30 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is "going to be a thing this year" if he stays healthy, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero, who reports the team has drawn up multiple plays just for him.

Fantasy Tip: The unofficial start date of Thomas' hype train began the day he was traded to Miami to reunite with Dolphins head coach Adam Gase, who ran the offense in Denver when the former basketball player tallied 24 touchdowns in 27 games from 2013-14. Thomas' biggest hurdle for most of his career has been durability, so he stands a great chance of returning to the TE1 ranks if he can stay healthy in an offense that will make sure he is an important weapon in the red zone.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas working on chemistry with QB

Fri, 26 May 2017 15:34:09 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas' chemistry with QB Ryan Tannehill appears to be a work in progress at this point during offseason workouts, in the opinion of The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas will have training camp and the preseason to build chemistry with Tannehill, so owners should not be worried about the situation. Thomas should be a valuable fantasy option for owners as long as he is healthy and can be a low-end No. 1 option.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas will be used properly

Sat, 06 May 2017 18:31:17 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is familiar with the offense, according to offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen, and Christensen said head coach Adam Gase knows how to use Thomas "extremely well" from their time together with the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: There is no doubt that Jacksonville badly misused Thomas the last two seasons, but injuries are also a major concern with the tight end. He is worth a look as a low-end TE1, but you will want to have backup plan in place.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas poised for huge year?

Sat, 06 May 2017 10:24:27 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas can add "10, 12 touchdowns" to the Dolphins' offense in 2017, according to offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen.

Fantasy Tip: It's a highly optimistic and, quite likely, unrealistic projection given Thomas' injury history, the fact he isn't playing with Peyton Manning anymore and Miami's focus on running the ball with Jay Ajayi. It is quite likely, however, Thomas does emerge as Ryan Tannehill's favorite red zone target, so he could have low-end TE1 upside.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas feeling good

Sat, 22 Apr 2017 10:55:34 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas told the Florida Times-Union recently this spring "is probably the best I've ever felt" and that head coach Adam Gase's offense "feels a lot like home".

Fantasy Tip: Gase was the offensive coordinator in Denver when Thomas posted back-to-back seasons of 12 receiving touchdowns, so the 28-year-old tight end certainly has reason to be optimistic if he is as healthy as he says he is. With Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker and Kenny Stills taking defensive attention away from him at receiver, Thomas could be poised for a nice rebound in 2017.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas expected to make difference

Mon, 03 Apr 2017 19:54:59 -0700

Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said TE Julius Thomas is "going to make a little bit of a difference for us." Gase also said he has a "good idea" of what the club wants to do on offense with him.

Fantasy Tip: When Gase and Thomas were together in Denver, the latter was arguably the most productive tight end in all of football, accumulating a whopping 24 touchdowns in 27 games as a starter. By comparison, Thomas didn't even score ten times combined over his two years with the Jaguars, but injuries played a role in that as well. The 28-year-old will have great potential as a sleeper in Miami.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas restructures deal

Sat, 25 Mar 2017 20:00:30 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas restructured his deal, turning his contract into a two-year deal worth $12.2 million with $7.5 million guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: There are a lot of mouths to feed in Miami's passing attack, and even if he can stay healthy, Thomas will have a tough time being more than a TE2 in 2017.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas finally healthy

Tue, 14 Mar 2017 09:47:18 -0700

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is finally healthy after battling back, finger and ankle injuries. "I don't really have any handicaps, anything that will hold me back," Thomas said. "... I feel really good. I know that I'll be able to play at the highest level I've played in my career."

Fantasy Tip: Reunited with Adam Gase, Thomas hopes to regain some of his glory from the 2013 and '14 seasons in which he scored a total of 24 times. He is too risky for TE1 status, but there is weekly flex consideration and daily gaming worth here. Thomas has to compete with three viable receivers for touches in an offense that figures to run the ball as much as possible to shield Ryan Tannehill.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas expendable due to blocking woes

Sun, 26 Feb 2017 11:45:21 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas wore out his welcome with the Jacksonville Jaguars in part due to his limitations as a blocker, according to a source, which called Thomas' blocking "non-existent".

Fantasy Tip: A former college basketball player, Thomas has never been a great blocker, so his struggles in that facet of the game certainly shouldn't have come as a surprise to the Jaguars, who will officially deal him to the Dolphins at the start of the new league year on March 9. Miami head coach Adam Gase was Thomas' offensive coordinator during his best years with the Denver Broncos and should be able to help his pupil climb back to low-end TE1 status in fantasy.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas passes physical

Wed, 22 Feb 2017 06:00:24 -0800

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas passed his physical with the club Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas will be in a familiar system he thrived in with the Denver Broncos, and he has a quarterback that has a knack of throwing to tight ends. It could be a great spot for him if he can stay healthy. He's a bounce-back pick as a TE2.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas wanted to reunite with old OC

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 20:09:29 -0800

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas restructured his contract in order to land with the Dolphins because he wanted to reunite with head coach Adam Gase, who was his old offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: It makes sense, as Gase runs the same system in Miami that he did in Denver, where Thomas absolutely thrived during his final two years with the club. In fact, the 28-year-old produced consecutive 12-touchdown campaigns with the Broncos, before disappointing greatly as a member of the Jaguars, with whom he scored a total of just nine touchdowns in 21 contests. As long as he can stay healthy, an extra-motivated Thomas could be a terrific value pick at the end of drafts next season.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas reworks deal

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 15:46:28 -0800

Miami Dolphins impending TE Julius Thomas agreed to restructure his contract as part of his trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Dolphins, according to a source. Thomas was scheduled to count $8.3 million against the salary cap in 2017, $9.8 million in 2018 and $10.3 million in 2019 before the restructuring.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has had success in an Adam Gase offense when he played for the Denver Broncos and should have a solid role in the Dolphins passing game if he can stay healthy. Thomas has the ability of be a No. 1 fantasy tight end, but owners may want to consider him a better No. 2 tight end because of his injury history.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas being sent to Miami

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 14:24:50 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is being traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a late-round 2017 draft pick Monday, Feb. 20.

Fantasy Tip: The departure of Thomas means Marcedes Lewis and Ben Koyacek are likely the top candidates to take over the starting job, at least for now. The Jaguars could obviously add a tight end via free agency or the NFL Draft. If nothing changes, neither Lewis nor Koyacek should be drafted as TE1s.

Dolphins | Miami acquiring Julius Thomas

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 14:16:07 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is being acquired by the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a late-round 2017 draft pick Monday, Feb. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has really come down to earth after two 12-touchdown seasons with the Denver Broncos. Injuries have plagued him throughout his career, too. The Dolphins are hoping for the Thomas of old with this trade, and he could be a valuable receiving threat, particularly in the red zone. That being said, expectations should be tempered. It's safer to draft Thomas as a backup fantasy tight end after he missed seven games last season.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas not headed to Miami?

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 09:38:15 -0800

Updating previous reports, Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is no longer a part of the trade package designed to acquire Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert.

Fantasy Tip: There could be any number of reasons for this development, although the most likely are the Jaguars got cold feet or reasoned Thomas was worth more than the late-round pick they are reportedly giving up now to get Albert. Although a trade has reportedly been agreed to, expect more updates in the hours and days ahead before the trade can be officially consummated. If Thomas remains in Jacksonville, he's a high-end TE2 at best.

Jaguars | Branden Albert visiting Jaguars

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 05:41:12 -0800

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert is visiting the Jacksonville Jaguars Monday, Feb. 20, to help facilitate a trade involving TE Julius Thomas. The trade would likely happen if both players agree to new deals. Thomas may need to take a small pay cut, and Albert could receive a bonus.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas' fantasy value could rejuvenate, but he has to stay on the field. He's a TE2 in fantasy at this point.

Dolphins | Miami still pursuing Julius Thomas

Sun, 19 Feb 2017 16:20:06 -0800

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert could be traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for TE Julius Thomas, according to league sources, and Albert said he wouldn't "ruffle feathers" if he was traded.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas was underutilized in Jacksonville, and he has battled injuries throughout his career. However, he also has a couple of strong years under his belt. He is worth grabbing as a TE2 in 2017 in case he returns to form.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas an option for Miami?

Fri, 17 Feb 2017 11:51:41 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas could be included in a trade that would send Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert to the Jaguars, in the opinion of The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero. Head coach Adam Gase coached Thomas when they were both with the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas is a solid contributor when he is healthy but has been limited to 21 games over the last two years because of injuries. He probably would be the starting tight end if he joined the Dolphins but would be a risky option for fantasy owners. He probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy tight end next season.

Jaguars | No bonus for Julius Thomas this week

Fri, 10 Feb 2017 14:34:57 -0800

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is not scheduled to receive a roster bonus this week but is scheduled to receive a $3 million bonus Thursday, March 9, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Earlier reports indicated that Thomas was going to receive a bonus this week, but the Jaguars have a few more weeks to make a decision on Thomas. He has played well when he is healthy but has missed 11 games since signing with the Jaguars. Thomas should be considered a No. 2 tight end in fantasy leagues next season because of his injury history.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas due large guarantee

Fri, 10 Feb 2017 10:29:58 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas' contract calls for $3 million of his $7 million base salary for 2017 to become fully guaranteed at the end of the day Friday, Feb. 10, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: This obviously means if the Jaguars are going to part ways with Thomas this offseason, today would be a good day to make it happen. Jacksonville doesn't really need the cap space, but Thomas has been something of an injury-riddled disappointment in two years with the Jags. Ben Koyack flashed some potential throughout the season and could emerge as a serviceable fantasy TE2 in 2017 if Thomas is cut.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas struggles with injuries

Mon, 06 Feb 2017 15:32:22 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas has missed 11 of 32 games since signing with the Jaguars because of various injuries but has caught nine touchdowns during those games. His $7 million salary for 2017 will be guaranteed if he is on the roster March 13.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has not played a full season since he entered the league and was limited to nine games in 2016. He has been productive when he has been on the field, but he could be released this offseason because of his injury history. He will be a risky option for fantasy owners no matter where he plays and probably should only be considered a No. 2 fantasy tight end.

Jaguars | Jaguars expected to cut Julius Thomas

Tue, 17 Jan 2017 19:40:25 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is expected to be released by the team this offseason, according to ESPN's Mike DiRocco. He has the fourth-highest cap figure ($8.3 million) in 2017.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has been mostly a bust since signing with the Jags in 2015, after putting up some impressive numbers during his tenure in Denver. It hasn't all been his fault, though, as the former Bronco has missed 11 games over two seasons with the club thanks to injury, and Jacksonville has him run a lot of short routes when he's more successful down the field and on seam routes. He needs a change of scenery to regain his TE1 status.

Sun, 18 Dec 2016 08:13:02 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (tailbone) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list last week because of a fractured tailbone, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Thomas will stay with the Jaguars next season, but he probably will start with someone in 2017. He has struggled with injuries throughout his career and should only be a No. 2 tight end in leagues next season.

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) will end up missing 11 games in two years with the team after being placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 10, and he could be released after the season, according to beat writer Mike DiRocco.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas has been a huge disappointment for Jacksonville, and injuries continue to derail his career. He has shown he can be a TE1 in the right system, but he won't be worth drafting in most leagues next year if he ends up back in Jacksonville.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas didn't practice all of last week either, so he could be heading for another absence. If he sits again then Ben Koyacek and Neal Sterling would split duties at tight end, but neither see enough volume to start in fantasy leagues.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas won't play in Week 13

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 08:42:32 -0800

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (back) has been ruled out for Week 13's game versus the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas did not practice at all during the week and was listed as doubtful on the injury report. Ben Koyack and Neal Sterling are expected to split time at tight end while he is sidelined but neither player should be viewed as a viable fantasy option.
