Yankees | Michael Pineda to miss 3-4 weeks

Wed, 30 Apr 2014 09:06:23 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda (lat) will be shut down for 10 days and will miss at least three to four weeks with a Grade 1 strain to his teres major muscle in his shoulder/lat area, according to general manager Brian Cashman. An MRI exam revealed the strain. SP David Phelps is expected to remain in the rotation with Pineda sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: Phelps is a must-add in AL-only leagues now in the short term. Pineda dealt with shoulder problems all of last season, too, so this is somewhat concerning.

Yankees | Michael Pineda has strained lat

Wed, 30 Apr 2014 08:49:40 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda's (lat) MRI exam showed he has a Grade 1 strain of his lat muscle.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda will surely miss his next scheduled start after he comes off his suspension next week, and it might land him on the disabled list, as well. Lat strains for pitchers require rest, even though it's a mild strain. David Phelps is filling in for Pineda this week, and he's expected to remain in the rotation for as long as Pineda is out.

Yankees | Michael Pineda injured, unlikely to make next start

Tue, 29 Apr 2014 13:06:24 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda (lat) left his simulated game after an inning with a tight lat Tuesday, April 29, and he'll go for tests. It's unlikely that he'll make his first start after he returns from his suspension. SP David Phelps is expected to remain in the starting rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on the results of Pineda's tests. Lat injuries can be debilitating for pitchers, depending on the severity. Look to add Phelps in AL-only leagues if Pineda requires a DL stint.

Fri, 25 Apr 2014 14:39:10 -0700

New York Yankees RP David Phelps will make the spot start against the Seattle Mariners Wednesday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Phelps can be ignored in all leagues, because it's just a spot start while Michael Pineda serves his 10-game suspension.

Yankees | David Phelps likely to make a start

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 14:23:13 -0700

New York Yankees RP David Phelps is likely to take SP Michael Pineda's next turn in the rotation May 3.

Fantasy Tip: Phelps' start will be a one-time deal while Pineda is suspended, so don't go out and pick him up off the waiver wire.

Yankees | Michael Pineda the favorite for No. 5 rotation spot?

Tue, 18 Mar 2014 14:46:01 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda gave up four hits and no runs while striking out five in 4 1/3 innings Tuesday, March 18, and it appears the No. 5 rotation spot is his to lose this spring. Pineda consistently hit 85 mph with his slider Tuesday and was between 90 and 92 mph with his fastball, and he was efficient with his pitches. Pineda hasn't allowed a run in nine spring innings. "Aggressive with every pitch. His slider is amazing. The ball was cutting really good. The fastball has some life so it's going to help a lot. And the changeup is great; he throws it right on the plate," C Francisco Cervelli said.

Manager Joe Girardi still wants to see Pineda stretched to the sixth or seventh innings, though, before it's official that he has a rotation spot locked up. However, Girardi said Pineda doesn't look like a pitcher coming off a serious injury. Pineda says he feels like he's getting stronger in each outing, and he won't rule out that he will touch the high-90s again. He's competing with SPs David Phelps, Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno, who each have two spring starts left.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda has come at an extreme discount in drafts because of his serious shoulder injury. With all signs pointing to a bounce-back, don't be surprised to see him shooting up draft boards.

Yankees | Bullpen jobs up in air

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 10:04:24 -0800

Other than New York Yankees RP David Robertson as the closer, manager Joe Girardi indicated that the rest of the bullpen roles have been undecided. RP Shawn Kelley will probably serve as the setup man for Robertson, and RP Matt Thornton will likely be the situational left-hander. Girardi also mentioned SPs David Phelps and Adam Warren as possibilities for the bullpen.

Yankees | Fifth starter job will be hotly contested

Mon, 10 Feb 2014 18:34:34 -0800

The fifth starter job for the New York Yankees will be a battle between SP Vidal Nuno, David Phelps, Michael Pineda and Adam Warren. Pineda declined to handicap the race when asked Monday, Feb. 10. "I don't know. I'm not really paying attention (to whether) I'm the favorite or not," Pineda said. "I'm focused on my job and doing good and making it through spring training."

Fantasy Tip: Normally the fifth starter job has limited fantasy appeal in most leagues, but the winner of the job in New York has a little more value due to their top-to-bottom lineup and strong offensive support. The situation will be a fun battle to watch during camp.
