The St. Louis Cardinals are close to reaching a contract extension with 3B Matt Carpenter Thursday, March 6. The deal is expected to be for six years in length, and FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal is reporting the value to be for between $50 and $55 million.

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter has reported early to spring training, and infielders coach Jose Oquendo put him and others through a very taxing ground-ball drill at the team's facilities. Carpenter is making the move from second to third base this season. "One of the things that he's a stickler for and a master for is just the basics of fielding a groundball," Carpenter said. "He has a unique way of creating drills like that where it just takes the thought out of it. You're reacting on instincts only. There's method to his madness."
