Rangers | Leonys Martin back to leadoff spot

Fri, 17 Apr 2015 15:10:18 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin is back in the leadoff spot against Seattle Mariners SP J.A. Happ Friday, April 17. 2B Rougned Odor is hitting ninth in the order.

Fantasy Tip: Martin ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is off to a slow start this year (.143, 6-for-42) for the Rangers and is more of a weak play at FantasyScore tonight against Happ. Martin hit only .250 with two of his seven home runs against southpaws in 2014 in 136 at-bats. Odor ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) also loses a bit of fantasy luster with his move all the way to the bottom of a struggling Texas order.

Rangers | Leonys Martin dropped in order

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 16:11:59 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin was dropped from leadoff to eighth in the batting order Tuesday, April 14, but manager Jeff Bannister still views Martin as the team's leadoff hitter. Martin has just two hits in his first 26 at-bats of the year, and Bannister thought he needed a break. 2B Rougned Odor is serving as the leadoff hitter Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Because of Martin's ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) slow start to the season, you may want to avoid him at FantasyScore tonight against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. A drop to the bottom of the batting order also makes him less attractive for fantasy owners tonight.

Rangers | Leonys Martin the leadoff hitter

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 14:26:23 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin is the team's leadoff hitter, according to manager Jeff Bannister.

Fantasy Tip: Martin ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is off to a slow start this year (.139 average in 36 at-bats) in the leadoff spot, but the Rangers will continue with him in the top spot. It's better for his long-term fantasy value, too. Martin is a sleeper pick Tuesday facing Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starter Drew Rucinski Tuesday night.

Rangers | Shin-Soo Choo could hit second

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 13:23:21 -0800

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo could hit in the second spot this season, with OF Leonys Martin being given every opportunity to stick in the leadoff spot this spring. A return to the No. 2 spot would allow Choo to hit in the more traditional "production" spot in Texas' lineup. However, if Martin ends up struggling against lefties, Choo could be considered for the top spot.

Fantasy Tip: Choo played in just 123 games in 2014 because of an injury. A return to full health and hitting in the No. 2 spot makes Choo an undervalued commodity in fantasy baseball drafts. He could return to the 20-home run mark and return plenty of profit for his owners.

Rangers | Leonys Martin wants to remain at leadoff

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 14:10:27 -0800

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin, who only hit leadoff in 35 games last year, wants to stick in the role in 2015, and new manager Jeff Bannister appears to be on board. OF Shin-Soo Choo is the other option to hit first, as he was the team's primary leadoff man before being hurt in 2014. Martin has gone over 30 stolen bases in each of the last two years, and he spent much of his offseason working on his baserunning. "I've been a leadoff man my entire career," Martin said. "I'm ready. I want to show I can help my team, get on base and try to score runs."

Fantasy Tip: Martin's back-to-back seasons of 30 stolen bases is comforting when you go to select him in the middle rounds of standard drafts. Hitting leadoff is where he'll have the highest fantasy value, as it'll also boost his runs potential.

Rangers | Leonys Martin on a tear

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 10:58:41 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin is 10-for-21 in his last six games. Martin has begun taking a more selective approach early in his at-bats. He has brought his batting average up over ten points since Monday, Aug. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Deep mixed league owners looking for speed and a hot bat can turn to Martin. He does sit frequently against left-handed pitchers, though.

Rangers | Leonys Martin looks to regain form

Tue, 12 Aug 2014 18:05:17 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin entered the game Tuesday, Aug. 12, against the Tampa Bay Rays with just one hit over his past 21 at-bats, and he was hitting just .111 over the past 16 games. Manager Ron Washington said Martin has been over-aggressive at the plate and showing poor pitch selection. "He's got to make adjustments," Washington said. "He has been slow at making adjustments. Swing at better pitches and don't try to do too much. Once failure sets in, you start to panic. When you don't have a whole lot of experience to fall back on, you start to panic."

Rangers | Leonys Martin sitting

Tue, 05 Aug 2014 13:07:11 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin is not starting Tuesday, Aug. 5.

Fantasy Tip: It's likely just a routine day off for Martin. Keep him on your bench tonight.

Rangers | Leonys Martin showing improvement

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 18:07:09 -0700

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin has been showing improvement lately, but manager Ron Washington said more is needed. Washington said Martin is back in the habit of trying to pull everything rather than using the entire field. "He's got to use the whole field, he can't just use one part of the field," Washington said Tuesday, July 29. "If you look at the numbers, most of his hits are two steps to the shortstop side of second base around to (first base). He's got to do something different. You call that adjusting. He's got to make an adjustment."

Fantasy Tip: Martin entered play Tuesday hitless in 16 at-bats, and hitting just .200 over the past 22 games. Until he shows more consistency, he is worth nothing more than a reserve spot in deeper AL-only fantasy play.
