Cardinals | Carlos Martinez being skipped

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 10:12:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez will be skipped in the rotation against the Washington Nationals Tuesday, Sept. 1, in favor of SP Marco Gonzales, who will be making his season debut. Gonzales is the Cardinals' No. 4 ranked prospect, and he went 1-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 17 starts in the minors this year.

Fantasy Tip: This is likely just a spot start for Gonzales, so owning him anywhere outside of deep NL-only or keeper leagues isn't advised. It's also not advised to use him on FantasyScore against the Nats tonight.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez falls again

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 23:48:34 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez lost his second straight start, allowing three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings Saturday, Aug. 22, as the Cardinals fell 8-0.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($8,500, 17.0% of cap) may be experiencing a case of the hiccups. He is 1-2 with an ERA above 4.00 in August, so you may want to be careful starting him until Martinez has demonstrated he can handle a quality start.

Cardinals | No limitations for Carlos Martinez yet

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 13:06:30 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez's workload is being watched closely, but there is currently no plan to limit his innings over the final eight weeks of the season.

Fantasy Tip: The 23-year-old righty has been remarkable this season with 12 wins, a 2.62 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP and a 9.1 K/9 through 137 1/3 innings over 21 starts. He should be viewed as a fringe No. 1 fantasy arm going forward and a slam-dunk No. 2 for your virtual rotation. However, there is a chance St. Louis changes their tune slightly as they eye the playoffs. For now, though, everything is straight ahead for Martinez.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez wins duel

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 19:33:10 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed six hits and struck out six over eight scoreless innings to pick up the win in a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves Saturday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) was dominant in his first start after the All-Star break, and he lowered his ERA to 2.34. More often than not, he offers ace-caliber production at FantasyScore for a discounted price.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez took the loss in a relief appearance against the New York Mets Sunday, July 19, allowing one earned run on five hits over four innings.

Fantasy Tip: The game lasted 18 innings, forcing Martinez ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) into action. His turn in the rotation will likely be impacted, so stay tuned for news of when he will make his next start.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez shuts down Pirates

Thu, 09 Jul 2015 20:43:20 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed four hits and struck out eight over 7 1/3 scoreless innings in a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) is now 7-1 with a 1.20 ERA in his last 10 starts, and after being a high-risk, high-reward option at FantasyScore early in the season, he is now worth a look whenever he takes the mound.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez is QS machine

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 18:08:23 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez is scheduled to start Thursday, July 9, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He enters the contest with nine consecutive quality starts dating back to May 15. However, the last time he faced the Bucs on the road, back on May 9, he was lit up for a season-high seven runs, seven hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($7,700; or 15.4% of cap) has been a consistent contributor for FantasyScore players all season, but that woeful outing last time out in Pittsburgh means you should start him at your own risk.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez make history

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 00:21:46 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha and SP Carlos Martinez each have at least nine wins through the first 75 games of the season. Martinez (9-3) and Wacha (10-3) are the first duo aged 23 or younger with nine or more wins at this point since Dwight Gooden and Sid Fernandez for the 1986 New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: The Cardinals were supposed to fold without Adam Wainwright, but Wacha ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) and Martinez ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) are part of the reason this team has a 51-24 record. These two are must-plays in FantasyScore and pretty much every other fantasy format.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez feeling fine

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 22:09:43 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (shoulder) felt good Wednesday, June 24, just one day after being hit on the pitching shoulder with a fastball while batting Tuesday, June 23. "It looked bad at the time," manager Mike Matheny said.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($7,200; or 14.4% of cap) should be fine for his next scheduled start, so FantasyScore owners will want to use him. He is 5-1 with a 1.33 ERA over his past seven starts.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez continues strong run

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 19:06:11 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez struck out nine batters through seven innings while allowing three earned runs over eight hits and a walk during the Cardinals' 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins Tuesday, June 23.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) has allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven consecutive starts and gone 5-2 over the run. He currently sports a 2.89 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 94 strikeouts over 87 1/3 innings for the season. The 23-year-old righty has emerged as a reliable arm in all fantasy formats, and he is pushing towards consideration as a fringe No. 1 fake starter, too.
