Cardinals | Carlos Martinez shaky in latest start

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 14:47:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez retired the first six batters in his latest outing but gave up a homer and three doubles to the next 10 batters.

Fantasy Tip: This was not the start Martinez wanted, especially with pitchers like Jaime Garcia and Michael Wacha looking solid. It is hard to predict where Martinez should be drafted, but right now the later rounds look the safest if he wins a starting job.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez more mature?

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 11:28:08 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez was serving as the rotation leader in workouts Monday, Feb. 23, and manager Mike Matheny said he has noticed a more mature pitcher this spring. "A year ago, you just see a kid bouncing around here," Matheny said. "It's amazing the transformation. Obviously, life has helped that process as well. But in general, there is a whole different demeanor to him."

Fantasy Tip: All signs are pointing toward Martinez landing the team's final rotation spot to start the year, unless he struggles mightily during spring training. With a more diverse array of pitches than he used in his relieving days, Martinez could be very nasty on opponents. He makes for an excellent choice with plenty of upside as a starter in the later rounds of drafts.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia says he's a starter

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 11:23:59 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) is adamant that he is a starting pitcher. However, he's made just 16 starts in the last two seasons and thrown less than 100 innings because of injuries. Garcia had left shoulder surgery last year, specifically to address thoracic outlet syndrome. He is coming into spring training on a normal schedule, though, and he'll compete with SPs Carlos Martinez and Marco Gonzales for the final rotation spot.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia's surgery last year was a significant one, and one that is typically tough to rebound from. We don't suggest taking a chance on Garcia in standard 12-team leagues unless he wins the final rotation spot, and that's a big if. Consider him an NL-only target as a cheap investment for now.

Cardinals | Philly driving hard for Carlos Martinez

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 05:46:49 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez must be included in a trade proposal for Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels before the Phillies will listen. Hamels loves St. Louis, and his wife is from the area.

Fantasy Tip: There is very little chance the Cards let go of Carlos Martinez unless they feel Adam Wainwright (elbow) or Michael Wacha (shoulder) are compromised for the 2015 season. Martinez has the inside track to win their final rotation spot, and he's a SP4 target in fantasy.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez with a new repertoire?

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 10:43:28 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez, who is auditioning for a rotation spot this spring, threw his changeup far more often during his bullpen session Wednesday, Feb. 18. Martinez in the past relied heavily on his fastball and hard sinker, while using the changeup 2.9% of the time. Martinez was using a circle change that had more depth to it Wednesday, and it's technically a new pitch. Martinez also plans to use his slider and curveball more this season as a starter, which would give him a total of five pitches at his disposal.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is the front-runner to win the final rotation spot over Marco Gonzales and Jaime Garcia. Martinez already had the stuff that gave him the most upside of the trio, and with more pitches, he could be even that much more dangerous. In the late rounds of a mixed-league draft, Martinez could be a steal as depth for your pitching staff.

Cardinals | Yadier working with Carlos Martinez

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 10:34:31 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina, who normally doesn't catch much in the early weeks of spring training, caught a bullpen session of SP Carlos Martinez Wednesday, Feb. 18. Molina offered suggestions to Martinez's mechanics after the session.

Fantasy Tip: This is an important development for Martinez and the Cardinals. Molina changing up his routine suggests the team is investing plenty in the development of Martinez as a starting pitcher this year. Even though he's yet to win a rotation spot, Martinez is a worthy gamble in the later rounds of your mixed league drafts to round out your rotation depth.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez has struggled as SP

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 14:51:29 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez, who is competing for a starting rotation spot this year with SPs Jaime Garcia and Marco Gonzales, has allowed opponents to hit .301 against him with a 1.70 WHIP in eight career starts. As a reliever, Martinez has a .255 batting average against and 1.28 WHIP. Opponents hit .435 against him the third time through the lineup when he was starting. Garcia has been limited to 36 starts since 2011 due to various injuries.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez presents an excellent buying opportunity in the late rounds of mixed leagues before he's won the rotation spot. He has the most upside of the trio and best raw stuff. But as Cassavell mentions, Martinez will need to alter his approach as a starter in order to change those numbers in a small sample size.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez adds bulk

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 14:53:16 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez, who is the leading candidate for the final starting rotation spot, said he added some bulk to his upper body this offseason in order to handle the innings of a starter.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez could return a fair amount of value as an end-gamer in standard mixed leagues this year if he wins a rotation spot. He's displayed the stuff and skills to succeed in both a starting and relieving role, and it looks like he's the favorite to open the season as a starter, making him much more valuable in fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Targeting right-handed hitter, fifth starter

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 12:32:15 -0800

The St. Louis Cardinals may pursue a right-handed bat within the next few days of the winter meetings or shortly after. They also want a fifth starting pitcher to give protection to RP Carlos Martinez, but the Cardinals may wait until January for that.
