Cardinals | Carlos Martinez shuts down M's

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 23:12:39 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed one run on four hits in seven innings against the Seattle Mariners on Friday, June 25. He was not involved in the decision.

Fantasy Tip: Were it not for some shaky bullpen work *cough* Trevor Rosenthal *cough* Martinez would be 5-0 over his last five starts. As it is, he's 3-0 with a 1.24 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 28 K's in 36 1/3 innings during that time. Martinez seems to have put his May struggles behind him and is back to being a must start in all formats.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez tosses 122 pitches

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 20:04:49 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez threw 122 pitches in a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, June 11, allowing one run in six hits while walking three and striking out five over 8 1/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is back on track after a rough patch, but after such a heavy workload, don't be surprised if he is pulled a little earlier than normal in his next outing.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez wild with baseball

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 05:13:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez threw three wild pitches in one game Sunday, June 5, after throwing three all season. Martinez still picked up the win as the Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants, 6-3.

Fantasy Tip: Most fantasy leagues won't penalize for wild pitches, and this was just one of those odd quirks coming from one of the team's better hurlers. Chances are good Martinez won't repeat that feat anytime soon, and he remains a solid fantasy pickup.

Giants | Buster Posey out Sunday

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 13:20:15 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey is out of the starting lineup Sunday, June 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals. C Trevor Brown will bat eighth against Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: Posey has started five straight games, so he's due for a night off. Don't be surprised if he pinch-hits, but that won't help you in DFS or any other league. Although Brown has four home runs this season, he hit the last one on May 15. Brown doesn't carry too much value at the plate.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez masterful vs. Brewers

Mon, 30 May 2016 16:47:15 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez was excellent in his Memorial Day start Monday, May 30, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He registered eight shutout innings, scattering only five hits and a walk. He also finished with eight strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Now this is the version of Martinez owners were hoping to see more of after his breakout campaign a year ago. It's also a relief for those who own 24-year-old right-hander, as he had allowed four or more runs in each of his last three starts. Martinez is now 5-5 with a 3.69 ERA on the year.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez loses again Wednesday

Wed, 25 May 2016 18:09:15 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (4-5) allowed six runs on six hits over five innings in a loss to the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 25, with three walks and seven strikeouts. Martinez has lost five consecutive decisions for the first time in his MLB career.

Fantasy Tip: After going 4-0 during the month of April, Martinez has gone five straight outings without recording a quality start and has only made it beyond the fifth inning once. He should be avoided in daily fantasy contests for the foreseeable future.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez struggles again

Sat, 21 May 2016 00:09:53 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed four runs in five innings and has lost his last four starts after winning the first four. Martinez dropped to 4-4 overall following an 11-7 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, May 20.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez and the struggles of fellow pitcher Adam Wainwright are prime reasons why the Cardinals are behind in the National League Central race. Martinez should be kept sidelined until he demonstrates signs of success. Right now, that four-game losing streak looms large.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez throwing hard

Tue, 17 May 2016 10:52:59 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez threw a 91-mph changeup in his outing over the weekend, and he hit 99 mph with his fastball three times and also hit 101 mph on the radar gun. Manager Mike Matheny said for Martinez's changeup to be effective there has to be "something to change up from." Martinez is averaging 87.1 mph on his changeup, which is 11th highest in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: It's a good sign for Martinez and his owners after he left one of his starts early recently with fatigue. The perplexing thing is he's fanned only four hitters in his last two starts over 8 1/3 innings. Martinez is likely still building some stamina after his setback, and he has a nice 3.14 ERA on the season. Stick with him as a No. 2 fantasy starter moving forward.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez pushed back

Tue, 10 May 2016 23:27:20 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (illness) was pushed back to Saturday, May 14, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fantasy Tip: The long layoff and poor matchup will make the decision to use him in DFS a tough one. He's an upper-middle option.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez may see more rest

Sat, 07 May 2016 16:07:28 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (fatigue) may be pushed back a couple of days to receive more rest before his next start.

Fantasy Tip: The Tsunami has been dealing with flu-like symptoms for a week and may not even make the start. Keep tabs on him, because he's a daily consideration in DFS.
