Cardinals | Carlos Martinez loses again Wednesday

Wed, 25 May 2016 18:09:15 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (4-5) allowed six runs on six hits over five innings in a loss to the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 25, with three walks and seven strikeouts. Martinez has lost five consecutive decisions for the first time in his MLB career.

Fantasy Tip: After going 4-0 during the month of April, Martinez has gone five straight outings without recording a quality start and has only made it beyond the fifth inning once. He should be avoided in daily fantasy contests for the foreseeable future.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez struggles again

Sat, 21 May 2016 00:09:53 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez allowed four runs in five innings and has lost his last four starts after winning the first four. Martinez dropped to 4-4 overall following an 11-7 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, May 20.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez and the struggles of fellow pitcher Adam Wainwright are prime reasons why the Cardinals are behind in the National League Central race. Martinez should be kept sidelined until he demonstrates signs of success. Right now, that four-game losing streak looms large.

Cardinals | Carlos Martinez throwing hard

Tue, 17 May 2016 10:52:59 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez threw a 91-mph changeup in his outing over the weekend, and he hit 99 mph with his fastball three times and also hit 101 mph on the radar gun. Manager Mike Matheny said for Martinez's changeup to be effective there has to be "something to change up from." Martinez is averaging 87.1 mph on his changeup, which is 11th highest in the majors.

Fantasy Tip: It's a good sign for Martinez and his owners after he left one of his starts early recently with fatigue. The perplexing thing is he's fanned only four hitters in his last two starts over 8 1/3 innings. Martinez is likely still building some stamina after his setback, and he has a nice 3.14 ERA on the season. Stick with him as a No. 2 fantasy starter moving forward.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez (3-0) allowed one run on three hits over seven innings in a victory over the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, April 20, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Martinez is tied for the MLB lead in victories and has tossed quality starts in each of his outings this season. The 24-year-old right-hander is scheduled to make his next start against the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, April 26, and makes a viable pitching option in all fantasy formats.

Braves | Ender Inciarte out Saturday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 12:17:30 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Ender Inciarte (leg) is not in the starting lineup against St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez on Saturday, April 9. OF Drew Stubbs will start in center and bat seventh while SS Erick Aybar moves up a spot to replace Inciarte atop the order.

Fantasy Tip: Stubbs was pretty much useless for fantasy purposes last year (.195 batting average and five home runs in 78 games between the Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies) but is only a season removed from a 15-homer, 20-steal campaign. He's not worth a start against Martinez on Saturday but could be worth stashing in deeper leagues if Inciarte is forced to miss multiple games.
