Red Sox | Allen Webster makes adjustment

Thu, 06 Mar 2014 13:48:59 -0800

Boston Red Sox SP Allen Webster was schooled in a video session of his mechanics by SPs Jon Lester and John Lackey after he allowed three runs in his first spring start. After making a tweak to his delivery, Webster rebounded by tossing three scoreless innings Wednesday, March 5. "We looked at a little video, and they saw me drifting forward," Webster said, "and they pulled me aside and told me to stay back over the rubber and get more angle, more downhill to the plate. It's mainly right before I throw the ball. I pull sideways instead of pull down, and I get alongside the ball and tug the ball to the side or sail it up and away."

Red Sox | Allen Webster, Alfredo Aceves sent down

Wed, 10 Jul 2013 16:25:13 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Allen Webster and P Alfredo Aceves have been demoted to the minors. In related moves, the team has called up RPs Steven Wright and Pedro Beato.

Fantasy Tip: Webster has electric stuff, but he has struggled with his command. He'll be good eventually, but he's not on mixed-league radars yet.

Red Sox | Allen Webster to make another start

Tue, 25 Jun 2013 19:59:57 -0700

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell announced Tuesday, June 25, that SP Allen Webster will get another chance to start, working Friday, June 28, against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Fantasy Tip: Webster will be making his fourth start of the season, and so far the results haven't been good. He is 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA in three starts, so only those absolutely desperate for pitching help in deep, deep AL-only leagues need to bother with Webster for fantasy purposes.

Red Sox | Allen Webster to start Saturday

Thu, 20 Jun 2013 14:21:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Allen Webster will start Saturday, June 22.

Fantasy Tip: Webster will be making the spot start in place of Clay Buchholz (neck). Webster is one of Boston's top pitching prospects with excellent ground-ball tendencies. Unfortunately, he doesn't figure to have long-term fantasy value, assuming Buchholz returns soon.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz update

Tue, 18 Jun 2013 07:49:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (neck) will throw Tuesday, June 18. The next step would be to throw a side session or go on the disabled list. SPs Rubby De La Rosa or Allen Webster would make a spot start this weekend if Buchholz went on the disabled list.

Red Sox | Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster candidates for spot start

Tue, 11 Jun 2013 15:31:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox SPs Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster, along with P Alfredo Aceves, are candidates to start one end of a doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, against the Tampa Bay Rays.

De La Rosa's pitch counts have moved into the 80s recently, but he has completed five innings only once in his 11 starts for Triple-A Pawtucket. He's allowed only four earned runs in his last eight starts (good for a 1.14 ERA in that span), however.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like De La Rosa isn't the ideal candidate, especially since Webster has already filled in twice this season -- once quite well, once disastrously -- and Aceves would also be on turn. Clay Buchholz's recent neck issue, along with the recent taxing of Boston's bullpen, has forced them to examine their options. It's feasible to think that P Franklin Morales, who was originally scheduled to start on Wednesday before he was needed for a couple of frames in last night's 14-inning game, is an option for the doubleheader, too.

Red Sox | Felix Doubront makes tweaks

Thu, 16 May 2013 15:13:39 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Felix Doubront worked with pitching coach Juan Nieves to adjust the stride in his delivery in order to generate more velocity and improve the command of his pitches. Doubront has given up 12 runs in nine innings in his last two outings, and he's pitching to keep his spot in the rotation right now. SPs Allen Webster and Franklin Morales (pectoral) could take his spot if he continues to struggle.

Fantasy Tip: Doubront must have a better outing tonight in order for the Red Sox to consider keeping him in the rotation over Morales or Webster. Morales is probably the better bet to take the rotation spot since the team is adamant on keeping him stretched out as a starter. Keep Morales in mind in your AL-only leagues.
