Diamondbacks | Archie Bradley tinkering with new pitch

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 13:43:45 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley is hoping a knuckle curveball can help carry him in 2015. "For a knuckle curve, you're not throwing it like a normal curveball where you're snapping your arm," Bradley said. "I was able to throw it at a young age, and it's just something that has been successful for me in pro ball." Bradley learned the pitch at a young age, and he can now successfully throw it for strikes. Manager Chip Hale said Bradley has put his up and down season in the minors last year behind him. A knuckle curve is a difficult pitch to throw, and Bradley acknowledged that if it isn't thrown correctly, it typically stays out over the middle of the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley's struggles in the minors last year won't endear him to any fantasy owners in mixed leagues to start the season. Bradley must still win a rotation spot this spring, too. If he wins a spot, though, he might be worth a late-round flier if you're confident in his improvement. It's probably safer to take a wait-and-see approach with him in mixed leagues, though.

Diamondbacks | AZ has competition for rotation spots

Sun, 08 Feb 2015 12:23:52 -0800

As many as 10 pitchers could be competing for the final three spots in the Arizona Diamondbacks' starting rotation. SPs Josh Collmenter and Jeremy Hellickson are expected to win the first two spots in the rotation, although nothing is etched in stone. SPs Chase Anderson, Archie Bradley, Trevor Cahill, Andrew Chafin, Rubby De La Rosa, Randall Delgado, Daniel Hudson, Vidal Nuno, Robbie Ray and Allen Webster are vying for the other spots, although several of these pitchers could wind up in the bullpen or the minor leagues.

Diamondbacks | Rotation up for grabs

Sun, 08 Feb 2015 00:58:44 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Josh Collmenter and SP Jeremy Hellickson will likely open the season in the starting rotation, but a wide variety of pitchers are in contention for the final three spots. SP Trevor Cahill and SP Vidal Nuno have the most major league experience. SP's Chase Anderson, Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster, and Robbie Ray received looks last season. Top SP prospect Archie Bradley will probably open the year in the minors. Other candidates include P's Andrew Chafin, Randall Delgado, and Daniel Hudson.

Diamondbacks | Archie Bradley coming up?

Wed, 27 Aug 2014 10:24:07 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley is listed among the team's players to play in the Arizona Fall League, and manager Kirk Gibson is unsure if that'll keep Bradley from pitching for the team when rosters expand in September. The decision will be up to general manager Kevin Towers. Bradley has thrown just 82 2/3 innings this year because of an elbow injury earlier this year.

Diamondbacks | Moving to a six-man rotation?

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 15:03:17 -0700

The Arizona Diamondbacks might shift to a six-man rotation in September, according to manager Kirk Gibson. The switch would help limit SP Chase Anderson's innings, and provide an opportunity for SP Archie Bradley to debut.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley is among the highest touted pitching prospects in baseball. He would be worth a flier in the majority of formats, if he were recalled. Anderson has pitched well, but limiting his starts could hinder his upside down the stretch.

Diamondbacks | Archie Bradley pitching well in minors

Mon, 04 Aug 2014 23:49:34 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley has a 3.97 ERA in 34 innings at Double-A Mobile, and Bradley has been healthy following injury scares earlier this season.

Fantasy Tip: The writer of this piece, Baseball America's Jack Magruder, suggests Bradley could be called up if Arizona goes to a six-man rotation. Bradley is worth a pickup if you have room to stash away players on your roster but doesn't have much fantasy value this year unless called up.

Diamondbacks | GM talks Archie Bradley

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 15:02:34 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley has pitched better with each outing at Double-A Mobile, according to general manager Kevin Towers. "We don't have a timetable, but at some point in time it would be nice to see him up here to get his feet wet and give him an opportunity to face major-league competition. See how he stacks up and see what he needs to work on," Towers said.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley is worth stashing in NL-only formats and potentially in deeper leagues. He is a high-end prospect, and he could reward with a few solid starts in September. However, keep your expectations in check.

Diamondbacks | Bronson Arroyo hoping to avoid TJS

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 13:45:21 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Bronson Arroyo (elbow), who won't throw for 10 days due to a strained ulnar collateral ligament and irritation in the flexor mass in his right elbow, is just hoping he can avoid Tommy John surgery. He is hoping he can return to throwing by the All-Star break. Arroyo said his elbow has bothered him in his last six starts. General manager Kevin Towers said he doesn't think this injury is related to the bone chip that was revealed in an MRI exam during a preseason evaluation.

SPs Zeke Spruill and Mike Bolsinger are both options to replace Arroyo in the starting rotation. SP Archie Bradley (elbow) will not be an option, as he's working his way back from an elbow sprain. Bradley tossed three innings in a rehab start Monday, June 16.

Fantasy Tip: Given Arroyo's age, expect the D-Backs to be cautious with him and give him plenty of time to return to full health. Spruill and Bolsinger are NL-only options, at best.
