Padres | Rehab updates for Friars

Tue, 17 May 2016 17:11:40 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Alexi Amarista (hamstring) is playing second base and leading off for Class AA San Antonio to start his rehab assignment Tuesday, May 17. 3B Yangervis Solarte (hamstring) played seven innings in an extended spring training game Monday, May 16, and he's slightly behind Amarista. 2B Cory Spangenberg (quadriceps) had a setback while trying to run two weeks ago for the first time. He hasn't run since or participated in any baseball activities.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like none of this trio will be ready to return for at least another week or two. Amarista is more of a utility player at the big league level. Solarte and Spangenberg were in starting roles when they were injured. Solarte can contribute modestly across the board but doesn't have much upside, while Spangenberg is mainly attractive in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues for his wheels.

Padres | Yangervis Solarte, Spangenberg progressing

Wed, 04 May 2016 15:36:36 -0700

San Diego Padres 3B Yangervis Solarte (hamstring) and 2B Cory Spangenberg (quadriceps) took the day off Wednesday, May 4, after running and taking batting practice two days previously. However, there remains no timetable for when they will begin rehab assignments.

Fantasy Tip: Solarte and Spangy have a ways to go before returning to the Friars lineup. Solarte played in only five games before he was injury, while Spangenberg was underwhelming with a .229/.302/.354 slash line with one homer and one stolen base in 48 at-bats. Both players should return as starters when they're ready, but neither has much fantasy value other than in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg resumes running

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 21:37:21 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (quadriceps) has started running on an anti-gravity treadmill, as he makes his way back from a strained quadriceps muscle.

Fantasy Tip: With Spangenberg on the shelf it is Alexi Amarista, Adam Rosales and Jemile Weeks each seeing more at-bats. Spangenberg is only worth a look in deeper NL-only fantasy formats when healthy.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg placed on disabled list

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 14:14:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (quadriceps) was officially placed on the disabled list Wednesday, April 20. In a corresponding move, 2B Jemile Weeks had his contract purchased from Class AAA El Paso.

Fantasy Tip: Weeks posted a .306/.405/.500 slash line through 10 games in the minors and will likely see enough work to warrant an add in NL-only leagues. However, his upside is limited, as Weeks hasn't been a regular in the league since 2012 when he returned a .221/.305/.304 line. Adam Rosales and Alexi Amarista should also be in the mix at the keystone, too. Stay tuned for updates on Spangenberg's recovery and return timeline.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg likely to DL

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 12:07:43 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (quadriceps) is likely to land on the disabled list, and 2B Jemile Weeks could soon be added to the 40-man roster to take Spangenberg's place.

Fantasy Tip: Either Adam Rosales or Alexi Amarista are likely to take over at the keystone, with Weeks possibly seeing starts here and there. The other will take over at third base with Yangervis Solarte on the DL. All three of the options to replace Spangenberg at second are light-hitting options that shouldn't attract much interest outside of NL-only affairs.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg leaves game

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 23:51:47 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg (quadriceps) left the game Tuesday, April 19, against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to a strained left quadriceps muscle.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Spangenberg in NL-only fantasy leagues which allow daily moves and DFS play until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks. Adam Rosales could see more at-bats if Spangenberg is forced to miss time.

Padres | Brett Wallace hitting cleanup

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 15:45:28 -0700

San Diego Padres 1B Brett Wallace is hitting cleanup and playing third base Saturday, April 16, with 2B Cory Spangenberg out of the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Wallace is just 1-for-10 (.100) on the season. The spot in the lineup is nice, but he doesn't have much upside against Shelby Miller right now.

Padres | Brett Wallace playing third base Saturday

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 11:27:55 -0700

San Diego Padres INF Brett Wallace will bat cleanup and start at third base against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Shelby Miller Saturday, April 16. INF Alexi Amarista, who played the hot corner Friday, April 15, will start at second base Saturday, with 2B Cory Spangenberg receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Wallace is 1-for-10 with five strikeouts and should be avoided in daily fantasy leagues during his ice-cold stretch at the plate, despite the fact that he's hitting in a favorable spot in the batting order.

Padres | Cory Spangenberg dropped in order

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 14:54:15 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Cory Spangenberg is batting sixth against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke Friday, April 15.

Fantasy Tip: Spangenberg is a low-end option at second base or middle infield in deep mixed leagues with upside to help in the stolen base and batting average column. And while hitting down the lineup hurts his overall fantasy value, it could provide a few more RBI opportunities. Spangenberg is an extremely risky daily option Friday with San Diego facing Greinke.

Padres | Jon Jay, Spangenberg leadoff options

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 10:33:35 -0800

San Diego Padres OF Jon Jay and 2B Cory Spangenberg are two potential options to hit leadoff this year, according to manager Andy Green.

Fantasy Tip: Spangengerg probably profiles better here and is more attractive in deep mixed and NL-only leagues for his wheels. Jay isn't a guarantee anymore to hit for a healthy average, and he has plenty of injury concerns.
