Marlins | Jose Fernandez roughed up by Giants

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 06:08:50 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five batters during the Marlins' 7-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants Saturday, April 24.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez has been a little out of whack to start the season, but he still boasts a league-best 32 strikeouts through his first four starts. The wins will come, and his 4.37 ERA and 1.28 WHIP will fall closer to his career marks of 2.54 and 1.03, respectively. Remain patient with the ace.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez gets untracked

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 21:05:23 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez allowed just one earned run, three hits, four walks and nine strikeouts over six innings for a win Monday, April 18, against the Washington Nationals. He improved to 18-1 in his career at Marlins Park, with his lone loss in his previous home start.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez needed 54 pitches to get through the first two innings, but he settled down in the final four innings and didn't allow his first hit until the fifth inning. He remains a must-start fantasy option, especially at home.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez not as good on road

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 16:07:14 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez has gone 17-1 with a 1.61 ERA at Marlins Park and is just 5-9 with a 3.78 ERA on the road in his career. Fernandez is starting on the road against the New York Mets Tuesday, April 12. "His stuff can win in any park," former pitcher Curt Schilling said. "His splits 10 years from now will be dominant splits, and he'll be fine."

Fantasy Tip: You shouldn't read too much into Fernandez's home/road splits this early in his career. Coming off Tommy John surgery two years ago, he's shown to be in fine form as a fantasy ace and should be started in all fantasy formats against the Mets, who have struggled to put up runs in the early going.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez strikes out 13

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 16:34:57 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez made his first start of the season Wednesday, April 6, versus the Detroit Tigers in a losing effort. He lasted 5 2/3 innings, surrendering five runs on five hits, including one homer, and also struck out 13 batters compared to just one walk.

Fantasy Tip: Being one of the best strikeout artists in baseball, Fernandez is always reliable for K's, but the rest of his statline from his season debut has to at least be a little bit concerning. After all, Wednesday's loss was his first career defeat at home -- in four years! Nonetheless, he should be fine going forward and will bounce back from this.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez on a new level?

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 11:49:53 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez seems to have matured as a pitcher and is using his changeup more this spring, according to a scout. "I've seen Jose Fernandez twice. Wow. He seems to have a different feel for what he's doing. He's using his changeup more. And he's not trying to strike everyone out," the scout said.

Fantasy Tip: It's scary to think that Fernandez still has a lot of upside left after sitting out half of last year because of Tommy John surgery. He'll have his innings limited in 2016, but a healthy Fernandez is easily a fantasy ace.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez no-hits Boston

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 13:17:13 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez pitched five no-hit innings as his team shut out the Boston Red Sox, 3-0, on Tuesday, March 22.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez struck out four batters in the win. It's only spring, but Fernandez is showing the form that made him a star pitcher pre-Tommy John surgery. Fernandez is a decent mid-round option in NL and mixed drafts.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez dazzles Tuesday

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 11:48:13 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez tossed five no-hit innings in Grapefruit League play Tuesday, March 22, against the Boston Red Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez looks to be in midseason form after a rough outing his last time out. He will have some innings restrictions in 2016 after returning from Tommy John surgery last year, but that shouldn't keep you from taking him as your fantasy ace in the early rounds of drafts.

Marlins | Miami to give Jose Fernandez extra rest

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 09:41:11 -0700

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly said more than half of SP Jose Fernandez's starts this season will come with an extra day of rest.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez will start the second game of the regular season versus the Detroit Tigers April 6, with SP Wei-Yin Chen starting opening day, in an attempt to limit his innings. He went 6-1 with a 2.92 ERA in 11 starts after returning from Tommy John surgery last season, with 79 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings, and should be selected in the early rounds of this year's fantasy drafts.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez talks rough outing

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 16:19:14 -0700

Updating a previous report, Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez was not pleased with the results of his Grapefruit League outing Thursday, March 17, but felt he pitched well. He did retire the first six batters he faced with four strikeouts.

"I felt good. I stuck to the game plan," Fernandez said. "There were things I wanted to do. I think I accomplished a lot of them. The results weren't there, but I worked on the stuff I wanted to work. Obviously, nobody likes to give up runs. I'm not too happy about it."

Fantasy Tip: With a successful return from Tommy John under his belt, Fernandez remains a fantasy ace and should be selected in the early rounds of drafts. He also highlighted his dominance through the first two innings of this start.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez lit up Thursday

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 11:08:47 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez was charged with six earned runs in 3 2/3 innings against the New York Mets in Grapefruit League play Thursday, March 17.

Fantasy Tip: Take it with a grain of salt. After all, it's still spring training and Fernandez is getting his work in. After a successful return from Tommy John last year, Fernandez proved he's a fantasy ace and is worth taking in the early rounds of drafts.
