Marlins | Jose Fernandez to throw Saturday

Fri, 15 May 2015 13:41:49 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez looks to be making good progress in his recovery but probably is still several weeks away from joining the Marlins' rotation. Owners should continue to monitor his situation and stash him on their bench if they have the roster space.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez to throw Monday

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 15:06:14 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) is expected to throw another session against live hitters Monday, May 4, in which he'll throw 30 pitches. He'll then have another session Thursday, May 7. Fernandez felt great and even mixed in two curveballs and four changeups in his throwing session Thursday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: The Marlins aren't rushing Fernandez back, and he's expected to rejoin the rotation sometime around the All-Star break this summer if he can avoid setbacks in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Fernandez should be owned in all leagues.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez faces hitters

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 12:39:12 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) threw 15 pitches to live hitters in Florida Thursday, April 30, for the first time since having Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Fernandez said he felt great during the outing, and he's expected to be back in the starting rotation near the All-Star break in mid-July. The Marlins will not rush him back.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez should be owned in all leagues as he works his way back from elbow reconstruction. While he may struggle with location and velocity upon his return, he's a top-flight arm that should be able to help your pitching staff in the second half of the season regardless.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez to face live hitters

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 22:10:35 -0700

Updating a previous report, Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) is scheduled to throw to live hitters at the team's minor-league complex in Jupiter, Fla. Thursday, April 30. The team view it as just another step in his rehab, not an indicator that his return could be accelerated. "Just another step in the process," manager Mike Redmond said.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez is expected back some time in the middle of the season, so FantasyScore owners have a while before they can depend upon him again.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez to face hitters

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 13:41:50 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) is scheduled to face hitters for the first time since his Tommy John surgery Thursday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez might be back in the middle of June in a best-case scenario, but he needs to be stashed in all fantasy baseball leagues until then. He is a top-flight young major league arm with all the talent in the world, and he could immediately make an impact for your fake pitching staff, beginning this summer.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez's rehab going great

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 10:33:47 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) hasn't had any setbacks in his return from Tommy John surgery, and he is likely to face live hitters in roughly a month if his rehab continues along smoothly. The Marlins continue to say that the earliest Fernandez could be back is mid-June, and they will be smart about bringing him back.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez's smooth rehab to this point will likely have many reaching for him in their fantasy drafts before opening day. However, not every return from TJS goes as smoothly as Matt Harvey's, so tempering expectations is advised. He's still worth a selection in the middle rounds to be stashed until midseason, though.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez to throw off mound

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 07:31:00 -0800

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) is scheduled to throw off a mound Sunday, March 1, for the first time since he underwent Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez appears to be making progress in his recovery but is not expected to rejoin the starting rotation until June. He will be a risky option in fantasy drafts since he is coming back from an injury, but he could be selected in one of the middle rounds of a draft.

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) threw fastballs and breaking balls off a mound Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez practicing patience

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 10:14:29 -0800

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez (elbow) is staying patient as he recovers from Tommy John surgery this offseason. He's projected to return to the mound in mid-summer; doctors gave him a target date of July 16. Fernandez may begin throwing off a mound in the first week of March during spring training. He's been throwing off flat ground from 150 feet and started throwing breaking pitches for the first time earlier this week. Fernandez hasn't experienced any setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: We all know how electric Fernandez can be when healthy. However, don't let that idea cloud your judgment on draft day and force you to overpay for a young pitcher that'll miss at least half the season. Starting pitchers often suffer from a lack of control initially, too, when returning from TJS, so there's no guarantee that Fernandez will return to his dominant form immediately. He's a risky selection as you approach the late middle rounds of drafts.
