Marlins | Jose Fernandez fans 13 in win

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 14:29:42 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez struck out 13 batters and allowed one run in seven innings Sunday, June 26, in a 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez has been lights out for the Marlins. It's hard to tell if he'll be trade bait because Miami is in contention for a National League wild-card spot. Take a look at some of these numbers, however. Hernandez is 24-1 at home in his career with a 1.48 ERA, and this year he's 10-3 with a 2.28 ERA and 138 strikeouts. He needs to be active everywhere.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez might skip one more start

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 19:22:12 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez said Wednesday, June 22, that by skipping one more start this season, that will allow him to pitch in the postseason should the club qualify.

Fantasy Tip: We'll keep you abreast of any changes for Fernandez as the team goes on. The team might use the All-Star break to give him a lengthy break, perhaps pushing him back in the rotation after. He is likely to be selected, but perhaps he pitches the Sunday before, does not pitch in the game and then gets several days of rest before his first start of the second half. Stay tuned.

Red Sox | Boston inquires about big-name starters

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 19:02:55 -0700

The Boston Red Sox have reached out to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins regarding the availability of SPs Gerrit Cole and Jose Fernandez, respectively, according to multiple baseball sources.

Fantasy Tip: No deal appears imminent for either hurler and it's likely that the Red Sox were just doing their due diligence to see what it would take to land a big-name starter. At the very least, a potential deal would likely involve SS Xander Bogaerts and/or OF Mookie Betts. When healthy, both Fernandez and Cole should be viewed as fantasy aces in seasonal leagues and must-start options in daily contests.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez settles for no-decision

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 20:41:54 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez continued his home dominance Tuesday, June 21, giving up one single and two walks while fanning seven over as many innings against the Atlanta Braves. Despite the no-decision, Fernandez is 6-1 with a 1.78 ERA at home this season and 23-1 with a 1.48 ERA all-time at Marlins Park.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez left with a two-run lead, but the Miami bullpen could not stop Jace Peterson from destroying what the Marlins' ace had created. The 2013 NL Rookie of the Year will face a stiff challenge at home Sunday against the Chicago Cubs, but he has proven to be too good to sit in Miami against any opponent.

Braves | Jeff Francoeur not in Tuesday lineup

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 12:18:22 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jeff Francoeur is not starting Tuesday, June 21, against the Miami Marlins. OF Emilio Bonifacio will start instead and bat eighth against Marlins SP Jose Fernandez.

Fantasy Tip: Bonifacio's contract was just purchased from Class AAA Gwinnett on Tuesday, so it may be too soon to tell how much fantasy value he will have. Since Bonifacio's playing time may be limited, he may make a decent daily pickup from time to time.

Braves | Jace Peterson batting leadoff

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 12:16:06 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Jace Peterson is batting leadoff Tuesday, June 21, against Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez.

Fantasy Tip: Peterson is 7-for-24 in the past week and does have a stolen base, so bumping him from sixth to first may create more scoring chances. Moving him to leadoff instantly increases his fantasy value, and you should consider Peterson in daily formats.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez to be skipped

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 11:14:52 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez will have his next start skipped as part of a program that is designed to limit his workload. His next start will come June 21.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez will likely skip another start down the road, too. His fantasy owners can't complain, though, as Fernandez has been one of the most dominant hurlers this year with a 9-3 record, 2.57 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 118 strikeouts in just 80 2/3 innings. He'll start next against the Braves, a dream matchup.

Marlins | Snakes bump off Jose Fernandez

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 22:32:29 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez allowed four earned runs, five hits and no walks with eight strikeouts over six innings Saturday, June 11, against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but it wasn't good enough to avoid the loss and slip to 9-3.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez isn't nearly as automatic on the road as he is at home, but he is still an obvious must-start due to his high rate of strikeouts. He entered the night tops in the majors in strikeouts per nine innings at 13.26.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez could leave Miami

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 18:35:41 -0700

The Miami Marlins feel that their odds of being able to sign SP Jose Fernandez to a long-term contract extension are slim. The 23-year-old right-hander is eligible for free agency after the 2018 season and the organization believes he will seek $30 million annually as a free agent.

Fantasy Tip: The Marlins are unlikely to be able to afford Fernandez's contract as well as Giancarlo Stanton's deal down the line. Fernandez is 9-2 with a 2.29 ERA in 12 starts this year, with 25 walks and a league-leading 110 strikeouts over 74 2/3 innings. He should be viewed as a must-start option in all fantasy formats every time he takes the mound.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez defying the odds

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 23:23:42 -0700

Miami Dolphins SP Jose Fernandez averaged 94.7 mph with his fastball before Tommy John surgery in May 2014. Since returning he averaged 95.9 mph last season and 94.9 mph this season, and his curveball velocity has risen, too. Fernandez's strikeouts per nine innings have spiked from 9.7 and 12.2 in 2013 and 2014 to 13.3 this season.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez has been fabulous post-surgery, perhaps even better than before. His high rate of strikeouts, and his ability to win at home, make him a DFS must-play regardless of price tag every time out.
