Athletics | Sonny Gray rocked again

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 00:14:13 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray allowed seven runs on nine hits in five innings Thursday, June 21, in a 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has eight losses in his last nine decisions, a far cry from the pitcher that dominated for Oakland in the past few years. As hard as it is to say, Gray does not have fantasy value until he can figure out just exactly what happened.

Athletics | Sonny Gray snaps drought

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 17:42:34 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray ended a 12-start winless drought, allowing three runs on six hits while walking four and striking out two over six innings in a win over the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday, July 15.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has allowed three runs or less in four of his last five starts, but his strikeout numbers remain disappointing and he has been far from dominant. He should be owned in most leagues in case he returns to form, but in the meantime, pick and choose when you start him based on the matchups.

Athletics | Sonny Gray tops 2015 loss total

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 15:51:44 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray dropped to 3-8 on the season after losing his start Wednesday, July 6, against the Minnesota Twins. The right-hander churned out a fine effort, though, allowing only one run on six hits over six innings of work. He also struck out five and walked four.

Fantasy Tip: Gray's eighth loss of the campaign comes right before the All-Star break, and it's already one more than he had all of last year, when he was 14-7 in 31 starts. Anyone who drafted the Oakland ace has been kind of stuck with him through his struggles, but at least it seems he's nearing the light at the end of the tunnel. After all, Gray has given up two runs or less in three of his past four assignments, so hopefully he's becoming more consistent like he was in his first three years.

Athletics | Sonny Gray continues to struggle

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 23:53:32 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray allowed seven runs while hitting a batter and throwing two wild pitches over six innings in a loss Friday, July 1, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has lost six straight decisions and is winless since April 22.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has tumbled significantly since last season, sitting at 3-7 with a 5.42 ERA. He can only be trusted in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues right now until he starts to show a little more consistency.

Athletics | Sonny Gray logs quality start

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 23:11:31 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray yielded two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits in six innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, June 21. He issued one walk and fanned seven in a no-decision.

Fantasy Tip: Gray was pretty good Tuesday night, scattering six singles and a double. He left with the score 2-2 so he didn't pick up the win. In four winless starts since returning from the DL, Gray has a 3.65 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 24 2/3 innings, during which he has struck out 19. Those are already pretty decent numbers, but remember that half of the 10 runs he has allowed came in one inning against the Texas Rangers. There are subtle signs that Gray is rounding into form. If he's available in your league, now would be the time to scoop him up and hope this upward trend continues.

Athletics | Sonny Gray struggles against Rangers

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 23:34:40 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray surrendered five runs on eight hits in six innings against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, June 15. He walked one and struck out three.

Fantasy Tip: After pitching fairly well in his first two post-DL outings, Gray worked five scoreless innings before coming apart in the sixth when he surrendered a pair of home runs as part of a five-run frame. The A's held a 5-0 lead entering the inning, and they ended up losing, 7-5, so Gray is still hunting for his first win since April 22. Despite Gray's struggles, continue stashing him if you can.

Athletics | Sonny Gray tagged with loss Friday

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 19:00:19 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray (3-6) allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds Friday, June 10, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has dropped five consecutive decisions, although he pitched well enough to win Friday. He faced the minimum 15 batters through his first five innings and didn't give up a hit until allowing a one-out single by C Tucker Barnhart in the sixth. Gray's next start will come versus the Texas Rangers Wednesday, June 15, and he is worth considering for DFS contests despite the losing streak.

Athletics | Positive outing for Sonny Gray

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 18:04:05 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray allowed one run on five hits while walking one and striking out five over five innings in a no-decision against the Houston Astros Sunday, June 5, and manager Bob Melvin said it was the best Gray has looked since his first start of the year.

Fantasy Tip: Gray's performance was encouraging, but it remains to be seen if he is back on track for the long haul. You may want to pick and choose when you start him for his next few outings.

Athletics | Sonny Gray activated

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 09:18:28 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray (neck, shoulder) was activated from the disabled list Sunday, June 5, in order to start against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Gray hasn't looked at all like the pitcher that finished third in the AL Cy Young voting last year with a 5.77 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 10 starts. It's possible his injury had affected some of his mechanics, though, so he should be able to turn things around with full health. The Astros lead the AL in strikeouts, but Gray will be a risky start in his first outing off the DL.

Athletics | Sonny Gray to get the call Sunday?

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 12:25:22 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray (neck, shoulder) is tentatively expected to come off the disabled list Sunday, June 5, in time to face the Houston Astros. Gray was originally scheduled to make a rehab start for Class A Stockton, but will instead fill the void left behind by SP Rich Hill (groin), whose turn the team plans to skip in order to give him more time to heal.

Fantasy Tip: This is far from an ideal return scenario for Gray, as the Astros have won nine of 11 entering Saturday's contest, doing so with a resurgent offense. Owners probably should play it safe with Gray and leave him on the bench for this outing and hope he shows well enough that he can be trusted next weekend on the road against the Cincinnati Reds.
