Mets | Juan Lagares not having surgery yet

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 17:00:58 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) will not immediately undergo surgery. The team will wait to see how his thumb responds to rest before making a decision on any procedure to address his partially torn ligament in his left thumb.

Fantasy Tip: It's possible rest could do the trick, though Lagares has already been dealing with the ailment for a little while now, and no improvement was made. As a result, it might be a little more likely that he'll ultimately have to deal with surgery, which could lead to a lengthy absence. Alejandro De Aza gets the biggest boost while he's sidelined.

Mets | Juan Lagares placed on DL

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 15:31:04 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) was placed on the disabled list Thursday, June 16. 3B Ty Kelly was activated in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: No surprise here, as Lagares had been trying to play through the thumb ailment for awhile now, and was limited to pinch-hitting duty over the past week and change. Alejandro De Aza will get the biggest boost as a result with increased playing time. Ty Kelly, meanwhile, is no one to add in any league.

Mets | Juan Lagares may need surgery

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 15:48:59 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) may need surgery or to go on the disabled list after he was scratched from the lineup Wednesday, June 15. He's dealing with a partial tear to a ligament in his left thumb that he suffered June 4. Lagares had been trying to play through the issue while using tape and a splint. He's come off the bench as either a pinch-hitter or defensive replacement four times since last week but didn't have more than one plate appearance. OF Brandon Nimmo could come up from Class AAA Las Vegas is Lagares needs to go on the DL.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't look promising for Lagares, and his owners may want to prepare for him missing significant time. He's mainly been a fourth outfielder for the Mets this year and makes more of an impact on defense than he does offensively for fantasy owners. Despite a .289 average this year, he has only two home runs, limiting his usage mainly to NL-only leagues when he's healthy and playing regularly. Nimmo is worth stashing now in NL-only and keeper leagues.

Mets | Juan Lagares a late scratch vs. Pirates

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 14:49:57 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) was a late scratch from the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, June 15, because of a lingering left thumb injury.

Fantasy Tip: Sub Lagares out of your lineups where you can Wednesday, and especially in daily contests. Expect Alejandro De Aza to draw into the lineup, but he's just 13-for-75 this season with an abysmal .478 OPS, and holds limited fantasy value.

Mets | Michael Conforto sitting vs. Pittsburgh

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 12:39:24 -0700

New York Mets OF Michael Conforto (wrist) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 15. OF Juan Lagares (teeth) is starting in center field and leading off against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Conforto received a cortisone shot in his left wrist Monday, June 13, and he is suffering from strained cartilage in his wrist. He likely should be avoided in all fantasy formats until he returns and shows some life at the plate. He has a .150/.212/.308 slash line since the calendar flipped to May, after all. Lagares is a viable grab in deep mixed and NL-only leagues because of his fleeting uptick in value and playing time.

Mets | Michael Conforto receives injection

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 15:40:38 -0700

New York Mets OF Michael Conforto (wrist) received a cortisone shot in his left wrist Monday, June 13, before he underwent an MRI exam. He was diagnosed with strained cartilage in his wrist, but he thinks he can return to the lineup within a few days without needing surgery. OF Juan Lagares (teeth) had a dental issue Tuesday, June 14, and is feeling "real sore," so OF Alejandro De Aza replaced Conforto. Conforto is hitless in his last 11 at-bats and is hitting .096 (5-for-52) since May 12. The Mets haven't seriously considered sending Conforto to the minors to work on his swing yet.

Fantasy Tip: Wrist and hand injuries for hitters can be debilitating and sap them of their power, so this injury is certainly something to watch closely, especially with the way Conforto has tailed off at the plate of late. When healthy, Conforto can be one of the more impactful young lefty sticks. For now, keep him benched until he returns and proves that his wrist isn't bothering him.

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 00:06:35 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) played Thursday, June 9, against the Milwaukee Brewers after missing four games due to a partially torn left thumb ligament.

Fantasy Tip: Lagares didn't have to go on the disabled list, so that's good news. He should be able to play on a regular basis from here out, barring another injury, so activate him in leagues based on favorable matchups.

Mets | Juan Lagares swinging bat

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 15:44:00 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) resumed swinging a bat Thursday, June 9, five days after suffering a partially torn ligament in his left thumb. "He actually looked pretty good," manager Terry Collins noted. "He's going to take batting practice. And then we're going to try to get him to take some balls in the outfield and see if he can close the glove. And then we'll know a little bit more." Collins also suggested that Lagares could be available off the bench as soon as the team's first game in its series opposite the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: This is definitely very positive news for Lagares, as this development should ensure he avoids a stint on the disabled list. The former Gold Glove winner is hitting a relatively respectable .276 thus far, but doesn't offer much else in terms of fantasy production.

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 23:56:04 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (hand) did not play for a fourth straight game Wednesday, June 8, against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but manager Terry Collins said Lagares is gaining strength in his injured hand.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners will want to hold off on using Lagares until he can officially return to the starting lineup and prove his health in a couple of games without any setbacks.

Mets | Juan Lagares could pinch run

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 10:41:04 -0700

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares (thumb) has rejoined the team and could be available to pinch run Tuesday, June 7, according to manager Terry Collins. However, Lagares is unlikely to do anything more than that, as his thumb remains too swollen.

Fantasy Tip: There remains a possibility that Lagares will need to go on the DL if his thumb doesn't respond quickly enough to allow him to hit and enter the starting lineup. Lagares is more useful for his defense than offense, though, so he's mainly an NL-only commodity for depth. Stay tuned.
