Lions | Detroit adding Matt Asiata |
Fri, 26 May 2017 17:13:19 -0700
Free-agent RB Matt Asiata (Vikings) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions Friday, May 26, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata will be joining a running back group that includes Ameer Abdullah, Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington. He probably will have to compete for a roster spot during training camp and likely can be avoided in most fantasy leagues because he would see limited carries.

Vikings | Door open for Matt Asiata return |
Sat, 11 Mar 2017 10:31:56 -0800
Free-agent RB Matt Asiata (Vikings) is looking at other teams and waiting for some of the top free-agent running backs to sign, but he has not ruled out a return to the Minnesota Vikings.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata is a good goal-line back, but he does little more than block Jerick McKinnon from maintaining any sustainable value in fantasy. The Vikings seem like a good bet to add a running back this offseason - be it bringing back Adrian Peterson, signing Eddie Lacy or drafting one - so Asiata may find he doesn't have a suitor for his services if he waits too long. He'll be an RB5 at best regardless of where he signs.

Vikings | Matt Asiata to test market |
Sat, 04 Mar 2017 12:07:56 -0800
Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent RB Matt Asiata plans to test the free-agent market and there is a decent chance that he does not re-sign with the Vikings, according to a source.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata probably will not be able to find a starting job this offseason but should receive interest from teams looking for a back that runs between the tackles. He probably will be a No. 3 or No. 4 fantasy running back depending on where he signs.

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata rushed for 34 yards on six carries against the Green Bay Packers in Week 16. He also caught three passes for 30 yards during the game.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata continues to share playing time with Jerick McKinnon and was more involved in the passing game in Week 16. He likely will have a similar role in Week 17 and probably should be avoided in most leagues.

Vikings | Matt Asiata will play in Week 15 |
Sat, 17 Dec 2016 23:03:57 -0800
Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (ankle) will be active in the team's Week 15 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Fantasy Tip: The earlier news that Peterson will play and start effectively undermines any fringe value Asiata may have had. He's too risky to trot out there for your playoff game.

Fri, 16 Dec 2016 17:26:56 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 16, and is listed as questionable for Week 15.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata may be a game-time decision, so owners should check on his status closer to game time. He probably will lose some carries with Adrian Peterson back in the lineup and should be avoided in all leagues.

Thu, 15 Dec 2016 12:06:06 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (ankle) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 15.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata should be part of a committee at running back in Week 15 and will receive work in short yardage and goal line situations. Asiata has some value because of his touchdown potential and could be a flex option in some deeper leagues.

Wed, 14 Dec 2016 13:25:33 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (ankle) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Dec. 14.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata has been sharing snaps with Jerick McKinnon over the last few months and has scored a touchdown in four of his last five games. Asiata can be a flex option in deeper leagues since he will continue to see a decent amount of carries.

Vikings | Matt Asiata finds end zone |
Sun, 11 Dec 2016 22:34:20 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata rushed 11 times for a team-high 37 yards and a touchdown in the Week 14 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also had two catches for 14 yards on his two targets.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata and Jerick McKinnon basically split the backfield touches right down the middle. Despite the foray into the end zone, Asiata is more of a low-end RB3 in most fantasy formats.

Thu, 24 Nov 2016 13:32:17 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata totaled 41 yards and a touchdown, including three catches, Thursday, Nov. 24.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata continues to score from close to the endzone. He has vulture several touchdowns this year and is known for being too touchdown reliant. He's more rosterable in PPR formats, but don't view his recent success as an every-week occurrence.

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (shoulder) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 18, and is not on the injury report for Week 11.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata will continue to share work with Jerick McKinnon but does have value because he should receive the work around the goal line. Owners should be able to find better options to use and can avoid Asiata.

Vikings | Matt Asiata takes part in practice |
Thu, 17 Nov 2016 12:06:10 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (shoulder) fully participated in practice Thursday, Nov. 17.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata should continue to share snaps with Jerick McKinnon during games and will see most of the work around the goal line. He has not rushed for more than 55 yards in any game this season but does have three touchdowns in the last six weeks. Owners in most leagues probably can find better options to use and can avoid Asiata.

Vikings | Matt Asiata full go |
Wed, 16 Nov 2016 15:05:11 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata has had a hit or miss career for the most part, and 2016 has been no exception. He's too dependent on touchdowns to be a reliable fantasy starter, especially with Jerick McKinnon in the mix. The fact that the Arizona Cardinals have been the best fantasy defense against running backs this year is icing on the cake.

Vikings | Matt Asiata grinds out 78 total yards |
Mon, 31 Oct 2016 21:35:51 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata rushed 14 times for 42 yards in the Week 8 game against the Chicago Bears Monday, Oct. 31, and he added two receptions for 36 yards on five targets.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata would be worth a look as a flex fantasy option in leagues of 12 or more teams in Week 9 against the Detroit Lions if he is given the lion's share of the touches again.

Vikings | Matt Asiata struggles |
Sun, 23 Oct 2016 13:54:09 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata had 55 yards rushing in a 21-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 23.
Fantasy Tip: The two-pronged attack of Asiata and Jerick McKinnon combined for 98 yards but had no touchdowns. Philadelphia did a good job singling out Minnesota's rushing attack. Still, it appears the Vikes have a running-by-committee situation here, so wait until one athlete breaks out before acting.

Vikings | Matt Asiata finds the end zone |
Sun, 09 Oct 2016 16:03:08 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata carried 14 times for 55 yards and a touchdown in the Week 5 game against the Houston Texans. He also hauled in three receptions for 46 yards.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata outperformed Jerick McKinnon, and this could be a situation worth monitoring heading into Week 7 after the team's bye. Asiata could have bought himself more touches after the solid performance, making him worth a look as an RB3 in two weeks.

Vikings | Matt Asiata finds the end zone |
Mon, 03 Oct 2016 21:03:20 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata rushed six times for just six yards in the Week 4 game against the New York Giants Monday, Oct. 3, but he was able to run in for a score. Asiata also added two catches for 12 yards.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata is the short-yardage back in Minnesota and you shouldn't expect a huge average yards per play from the back. He is only worth a look in the deepest of fantasy leagues at this point.

Vikings | Matt Asiata has quiet Week 3 |
Sun, 25 Sep 2016 13:17:09 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata rushed for 15 yards on six carries against the Carolina Panthers in Week 3. He also caught one pass for four yards.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata was facing a tough Panthers defense and should play better moving forward. He will receive playing time as long as Adrian Peterson is sidelined but will not be more than a flex option in most leagues.

Vikings | Matt Asiata to start Week 3 |
Sun, 25 Sep 2016 09:13:59 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata will be the starting running back for the Vikings in Week 3.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata should receive a decent amount of carries this week and likely will run between the tackles, while Jerick McKinnon will be used as a runner as well as a receiver out of the backfield. Both players are facing a tough Carolina Panthers defense but could still be flex options in fantasy leagues.

Vikings | Jerick McKinnon will start |
Wed, 21 Sep 2016 11:09:02 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon will be the starting running back with RB Adrian Peterson (knee) sidelined. He likely will play at least 60 percent of the snaps. RB Matt Asiata will also receive playing time and likely will handle the goal line carries.
Fantasy Tip: McKinnon will be able to help out in the running and passing game over the next few months and should be a popular waiver wire addition. He can be a low-end No. 2 running back or a flex option in leagues. Asiata will also have value and can be a flex option in deeper leagues because of his touchdown potential.

Vikings | Minnesota will split work for backs |
Mon, 19 Sep 2016 13:22:06 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RBs Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata could see a 65/35 split between carries if RB Adrian Peterson (knee) misses any time, according to Matt Vensel of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Fantasy Tip: As stated before, McKinnon is the better all-around player and should be picked up this week if Peterson owners are in a tight pinch. Asiata has more value in PPR formats, but he should only be claimed in deeper leagues. If Peterson can't play then McKinnon would slide into low-end RB2 to high-end RB3 territory for Week 3.

Vikings | Financials for Matt Asiata |
Mon, 28 Mar 2016 23:10:57 -0700
The one-year deal for Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata is for $760,000 in salary with a $60,000 bonus. He also has a $500,000 playing time bonus, as well as incentives for rush yards and receptions.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata will be behind Adrian Peterson and Jerick McKinnon on the depth chart, but he could reach those incentives if injuries befall one of the top two tailbacks.

Vikings | Matt Asiata re-signs with Vikes |
Wed, 16 Mar 2016 15:09:35 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata re-signed to an undisclosed deal Wednesday, March 16.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata is a solid pass-catching running back and a good blocker, but he has minimal fantasy value as long as Adrian Peterson and Jerick McKinnon are healthy. If he were to be drafted, he'd have more value in PPR leagues.

Vikings | Matt Asiata to re-sign with Vikings? |
Wed, 02 Mar 2016 17:00:12 -0800
Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent RB Matt Asiata is wanted back by the Vikings.
Fantasy Tip: As stated earlier, Asiata didn't see and won't see much playing time as long as Adrian Peterson is healthy. It looks like the odds are in favor of Asiata returning to Minnesota, though, where he solidified himself as a consistent pass-catcher and solid blocker. He'll have more value in PPR leagues, but he's not worth draft as long as Peterson is good to go.

Vikings | Adrian Peterson limited by finger |
Wed, 21 Oct 2015 14:43:45 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (finger) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 21. Peterson left RB Matt Asiata to the running back duties for the final few plays in Week 6 after hurting his finger.
Fantasy Tip: Peterson ($8,200, 16.4% of cap) was held in check last week by the Kansas City Chiefs, but he has good history within his division and should be able to bounce back against a soft Detroit Lions run defense this weekend.

Vikings | Matt Asiata out in goal-line situations? |
Mon, 27 Jul 2015 19:37:32 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata was a fantastic contributor in goal-line situations, but head coach Mike Zimmer indicated Monday, July 27, that RB Adrian Peterson will be leaned upon in the situations this season. "Obviously, we're going to have to spell (Peterson) at times like you do a lot of guys. But we get down on the goal line, and we're probably not pulling him out, you know?," Zimmer said.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata had some fantasy appeal, especially in TD-only leagues, last season. However, with the return of Peterson, and the presence of Jerick McKinnon, it's unlikely Asiata gets very many touches unless long-term injuries strike in the Minnesota backfield.

Vikings | Matt Asiata should have role |
Thu, 09 Jul 2015 12:36:50 -0700
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata likely will be used in short-yardage situations this season.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata's fantasy value has gone down with Adrian Peterson returning to the team. Asiata could be a late-round option as a handcuff to Peterson, but he probably will not be used in the starting lineup much this season.

Vikings | Matt Asiata returning to Minnesota |
Mon, 09 Mar 2015 17:48:26 -0700
Minnesota Vikings restricted free-agent RB Matt Asiata will sign a new one-year deal with the Vikings, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata received a lot of playing time this past season because of Adrian Peterson's off-field issues and finished the season with 570 yards and nine touchdowns. Asiata's fantasy value probably will depend on what the Vikings do with Peterson since he could be a starting option if Peterson leaves. Asiata could be considered a weak No. 2 running back or flex option if he becomes the starter and would be more valuable in standard leagues.

Vikings | Matt Asiata listed as probable |
Fri, 26 Dec 2014 15:03:10 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (foot) is listed as probable for Week 17.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata is at least a nice flex option on FantasyScore this week as he faces off against a Chicago Bears defense that surrenders nearly 20 fantasy points per game to running backs.

Vikings | Matt Asiata takes part in practice |
Thu, 25 Dec 2014 14:48:26 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (foot) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 25.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata would receive most of the work at running back in Week 17. He has a favorable matchup against the Chicago Bears since they have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs over the last four games. Asiata could be a No. 2 running back or flex option for owners on FantasyScore this week.

Wed, 24 Dec 2014 13:22:35 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (foot) took part in a full practice session Wednesday, Dec. 24.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata has posted nine rushing touchdowns this season, and can be a help to FantasyScore owners in Week 17. Not only does he have a nose for the end zone, but he has good hands out of the backfield as well.

Fantasy Tip: Asiata likely will continue to receive a majority of the carries and will be facing a Miami Dolphins defense that has struggled against running backs over the past four games. Asiata costs $4,600 on FantasyScore and could be an attractive option at running back or the flex position.

Vikings | Limited practice for Matt Asiata |
Wed, 17 Dec 2014 14:05:44 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (foot) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 17.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata ($4,600) gains some value with Jerick McKinnon out for the year. Also, Asiata should be a nice value play at FantasyScore this week. He's had double-digit carries in each of the last three weeks, and the Miami Dolphins have been very vulnerable on the ground of late.

Vikings | Ben Tate, Joe Banyard may see more time |
Mon, 08 Dec 2014 14:16:09 -0800
Minnesota Vikings RBs Ben Tate and Joe Banyard could receive more carries, because head coach Mike Zimmer thought RB Matt Asiata received too many carries in Week 14. Asiata received 19 of the 23 carries during the game.
Fantasy Tip: Asiata probably will still receive a majority of the carries but will see his number of touches go down with Tate and Banyard receiving more carries. Asiata should only be considered a desperate flex option for owners, while Tate and Banyard should not be considered for starting lineups.
