Marlins | Carter Capps to have Tommy John surgery

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 07:21:57 -0800

Miami Marlins RP Carter Capps (elbow) is expected to have Tommy John surgery Tuesday, March 8, according to president of baseball operations Mike Hill. Capps has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.

Fantasy Tip: Capps is expected to miss the 2016 season, which gives A.J. Ramos a clear line to the closer role. Ramos is dealing with a minor calf issue and has yet to appear in a spring game. He had a great season in 2015 with 32 saves, a 2.30 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and an 11.13 K/9. Ramos, if his calf injury doesn't limit him much longer, is a low-end RP2 consideration.

Marlins | Carter Capps out indefinitely

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 09:11:31 -0800

Miami Marlins RP Carter Capps (elbow) is expected to sit out for an undisclosed time period with a sore right elbow. He missed the last two months of last year and three months in 2014 with the same issue.

Fantasy Tip: Capps' unusual pitching delivery puts a lot of stress on his elbow, so this isn't a huge shock. He's seeking medical opinion, so stay tuned on his diagnosis. He could need Tommy John surgery, which would end his year. His injury gives A.J. Ramos more value as a late-game closing option.

Marlins | Carter Capps visiting Dr. Andrews

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 05:52:09 -0800

Miami Marlins RP Carter Capps (elbow) will be examined by Dr. James Andrews, and the Marlins are weighing their options.

Fantasy Tip: That usually means Tommy John surgery is on the table. Capps was supposed to battle A.J. Ramos for the closer spot, and Ramos may be the front runner by default. Ramos is a high-end RP3 candidate right now.

Marlins | Carter Capps has MRI

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 09:32:17 -0800

Miami Marlins RP Carter Capps (elbow) had an MRI on his right elbow and will seek a second opinion.

Fantasy Tip: That doesn't sound good. Capps was pegged to battle A.J. Ramos for the closer spot, and Ramos may have the edge right now. Both are RP3 candidates if Capps avoids serious injury.

Marlins | Carter Capps healthy

Mon, 15 Feb 2016 15:26:51 -0800

Miami Marlins RP Carter Capps (elbow) is healthy entering spring training after not pitching since Aug. 2 due to a right elbow strain. He's already been throwing off the mound and is "ready to go."

Fantasy Tip: It's already been announced by the team that Capps will compete with fellow reliever A.J. Ramos for the closer's job. If Capps is able to dethrone Ramos -- which won't be easy, considering Ramos' success in that role last season -- he has the potential to be one of the more dominant closers. He racked up 58 strikeouts in only 31 innings of work in 2015, to go with a microscopic 1.16 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. At the very least, he's worthy of being drafted as a handcuff, and should contribute good numbers in any late-inning role.

Marlins | Miami closer's job up for grabs

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 07:27:08 -0800

The Miami Marlins are expected to have an open competition for the closer job, with RP Carter Capps having an opportunity to win the job away from incumbent CL A.J. Ramos, according to general manager Michael Hill.

Fantasy Tip: Ramos went 2-4 with a 2.30 ERA and 32 saves in 71 games last season, while striking out 87 batters in 70 1/3 innings, and should still be considered the favorite to close games for the Fish. Capps went 1-0 with a 1.16 ERA in 30 appearances in 2015, with 58 strikeouts in 31 innings. Despite the eye-popping K/9 rate, Capps has never saved a game at the major league level. Both pitchers should be monitored throughout spring training, especially in NL-only leagues. The Marlins had also expressed interest in free-agent RP Fernando Rodney, who has prior closing experience, before he signed with the San Diego Padres.

Marlins | Carter Capps throws bullpen

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 14:00:41 -0700

Miami Marlins RP Carter Capps (elbow) threw his first bullpen session Tuesday, Aug. 11, and the session went well, according to manager Dan Jennings. Capps will throw another bullpen and then make some appearances in minor league rehab games.

Fantasy Tip: Capps isn't closing for Miami, but he has closer's stuff, with a 1.16 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 16.8 K/9 this year. For owners in deeper leagues, those numbers can help your ratios, regardless of whether Capps is recording saves.

Marlins | Carter Capps placed on DL

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 12:13:55 -0700

Miami Marlins RP Carter Capps (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, Aug. 3, because of a right elbow strain.

Fantasy Tip: Capps has been one of the better setup men this season, so owners should monitor his recovery over the next few weeks. Mike Dunn likely will see more time in the setup role and could be an option in leagues that count holds.

Marlins | Carter Capps garnering significant interest

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 12:06:34 -0700

Miami Marlins RP Carter Capps is drawing trade interest from approximately eight teams, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Capps has been impressive in a set-up role with the Marlins and owns a 1.21 ERA, a 0.99 FIP, a 0.74 WHIP and a 17.0 K/9. He could land in saves situations at some point this season, and he worth owning in the majority of seasonal leagues. He'll likely stick in a set-up role, though, but with his impressive ratios, there is still plenty of fantasy value here.
