Arizona Diamondbacks RP Addison Reed, who has just two saves in his last five chances, believes he is mechanically out of whack right now. Reed is 20-for-25 on the season and has allowed nine home runs. Reed naturally throws across his body, and he gets into trouble when his weight drifts to the side instead of moving forward towards the plate in his delivery. He is working hard to correct the problem. The D-backs believe Reed can fix his mechanics, and manager Kirk Gibson isn't even considering giving the job to RP Brad Ziegler.
"Sometimes I just get fastball happy and think I can get by with some well-located fastballs," Reed said. "The thing with me is, I've been getting hurt a lot of times leaving the ball up and over the middle of the plate instead of hitting the corners. Obviously I need to start throwing more sliders and start mixing it up a little more, and when I throw the fastball I need to locate where I am supposed to." Reed's fastball is averaging 92.5 mph this year, which is about where he sat last year after being in the 94.5 mph range his first two seasons with the Chicago White Sox. Reed thinks improving his mechanics will lead to fewer homers allowed, too.
Fantasy Tip: Saves speculators should still take a chance on Ziegler just in case Reed continues to struggle. Eventually, if Reed can't turn things around, Gibson will likely be forced to make a move in the ninth.

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Addison Reed will remain as the team's closer, according to manager Kirk Gibson.
Fantasy Tip: Deja vu. We heard the same statement from Gibson last week the night after Addison blew a save and was hit with the loss. Since then, Reed has recorded one save in between another blown save and loss, which came last night. Reed is on shaky ground, and saves speculators with room should stash Brad Ziegler.

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Addison Reed is still the team's closer, according to manager Kirk Gibson.
Fantasy Tip: Reed hasn't been great this year, but the fact is that the D-Backs don't have many other options to go to in the ninth. If Gibson were to make a move, Brad Ziegler would likely get the first shot.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson would like CL Addison Reed to vary his pitch selection. Reed threw 11 fastballs in 12 pitches in his outing Saturday, June 7. Reed has thrown his changeup less than 1 percent of the time this year compared to 7 percent last year and use of his slider also has dropped, from around 25 percent throughout his career to 20 percent in 2014.

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Brad Ziegler picked up the save in place of CL Addison Reed Sunday, June 8. Manager Kirk Gibson said Reed has a tired arm, but it's nothing serious.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson emphatically endorsed CL Addison Reed as his team's closer after Reed blew the save Monday, May 12. "There's no controversy here. He's our closer, and he's done a hell of a job for us," Gibson said. "You can forget that. It didn't work out for us tonight, and it (stinks.)"

Arizona Diamondbacks CL Addison Reed suffered a blown save Monday, March 31, when San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to put the Giants on top.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson confirmed that RP Addison Reed will serve as the club's closer to start the season.
Fantasy Tip: Hardly a surprise, though they insisted the saves job was a camp competition. Reed should deliver solid midrange numbers, but don't write off J.J. Putz or David Hernandez getting in the mix if Reed should struggle.

Arizona Diamondbacks RP J.J. Putz has given up three runs on six hits and three walks, plus a hit batsman, in four appearances this spring. His fastball has gone from 86 to 88 mph early on to 88 to 90 more recently, which is still down from his average of 91.7 last year, per PITCHf/x. Manager Kirk Gibson isn't concerned. Putz went nearly a week between appearances as he tinkered with his mechanics with pitching coach Mike Harkey.
Fantasy Tip: Putz likely will play second fiddle for saves to Addison Reed when the season starts, especially if this continues.

The Arizona Diamondbacks' closer competition this spring is likely to come down to RPs Addison Reed and J.J. Putz. RP Brad Ziegler was used as the closer last year because the need was there.
