Astros | Mike Fiers doesn't last long

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 21:28:23 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers was staked to an early and sizeable lead Saturday, June 25, against the Kansas City Royals. However, he allowed three runs - two earned - and nine hits with three walks over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision, as he didn't last long enough to qualify for the victory.

Fantasy Tip: Fiers entered the game 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA over his first four starts in June, but he had a rough one in this one. He can only be trusted in AL-only fantasy formats due to his 4.41 ERA and mediocre 1.35 WHIP, both of which are higher than his career averages.

Astros | Mike Fiers injured, leaves game

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 14:52:36 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers (thigh) allowed four hits and struck out five in 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, June 19. Fiers left the game when a line drive hit him in the thigh for a single with two outs in the sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Fiers did get the victory, but stay tuned to see if this injury will be a loss for the Astros. It may just be a bruise, but results are still pending.

Astros | Mike Fiers solid in road victory

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 19:48:09 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers allowed two earned runs, five hits and a walk with three strikeouts over seven innings in a quality start and win Saturday, June 11, against the Tampa Bay Rays. He was efficient, throwing 57 of his 85 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: After a rocky start to the season Fiers has put up respectable numbers in the month of June. He is 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in three outings in the month while striking out 12 batters over 18 1/3 innings. Fiers is still only worth using in deeper AL-only fantay leagues, especially since he isn't a big strikeout producer, but if he continues to keep the ball in the park and allow fewer runs he might re-emerge as a mixed option before too long.

Astros | Mike Fiers has rough outing

Sat, 28 May 2016 05:17:43 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers allowed seven runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, May 27, to suffer his third loss of the season. He struck out one batter and walked two during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Fiers had allowed only five runs in his previous three games but ran into trouble against the Angels. He is scheduled to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in his next start and may be a risky option for some owners.

Astros | Mike Fiers a tough-luck loser

Sun, 22 May 2016 04:22:07 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers allowed two runs on six hits without issuing a walk and striking out six batters over seven innings during the Astros' 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers Saturday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Friers likely deserved a better fate after limiting the strong offensive attack of the Rangers. He is a fringe own in the majority of seasonal leagues, and you'll likely want to be a little selective about who you start Friers against. For the year, he has a 3-2 record, a 4.35 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP and 37 punchouts through 51 2/3 innings.

Astros | Mike Fiers pushed back

Mon, 16 May 2016 06:21:56 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers was pushed back from his start Thursday, May 19, to Saturday, May 21. Fiers pitched four innings in relief Sunday, May 15. SP Collin McHugh will start Thursday against the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Fiers' stuff has declined, at least to open the season, as his opponents' batting average is .289 with a 6.25 K/9. He'll start at home against the Texas Rangers now, but he's a middling option in DFS. McHugh has struggled even more with a 5.58 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP. He's not a good selection in DFS right now.

Astros | Mike Fiers has solid outing

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 05:12:00 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings against the Oakland Athletics Friday, April 29. He struck out five batters during the game and did not walk any batters.

Fantasy Tip: Fiers had his longest outing of the season Friday but has allowed seven home runs in his five starts this season. He is scheduled to face the Minnesota Twins in his next start but may not be the best pitcher for owners to use in their lineups.

Astros | Mike Fiers settles down a bit

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 15:58:59 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts Sunday, April 17, against the Detroit Tigers. Fiers had allowed eight runs and three home runs over 11 innings during his first two starts.

Fantasy Tip: Fiers is a decent fantasy option thanks to the loaded Astro lineup, but he may have needed some time to shake off the spring rust. Keep him in mind for your lineup.

Astros | Mike Fiers beat up

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 14:56:28 -0700

Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers gave up eight hits, six runs and walked two in 4 2/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves in spring action Tuesday, March 22, and he's allowed 13 hits and eight earned runs in 7 2/3 innings in his two starts against Atlanta.

Fantasy Tip: Fiers is competing with Scott Feldman and Doug Fister for the final two rotation spots, so this doesn't bode well for his chances. Fiers throws heat and can induce frequent swings and misses, but he remains inconsistent and isn't worth owning in mixed leagues right now.

Astros | Houston's rotation competition

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 12:08:33 -0800

Houston Astros SPs Mike Fiers, Scott Feldman and Doug Fister are competing for the final two rotation spots this spring. Feldman and Fister are making a combined $15 million this year, which might make Fiers the odd-man out, even after he threw a no-hitter in 2015. Feldman's sprained right shoulder ended his 2015 season, but he said he's feeling better than ever this year.

Fantasy Tip: Fister's drop in velocity and inability to continue to induce plenty of ground balls hurts his fantasy value heading into 2016 in a much more dangerous hitter's park. Feldman's injuries make him even more of a risk. Fiers has the most upside of the bunch and is a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues for his strikeout abilities.
