Marlins | Wei-Yin Chen the No. 2 starter

Tue, 12 Jan 2016 10:26:42 -0800

Miami Marlins SP Wei-Yin Chen is expected to be the team's No. 2 starting pitcher behind SP Jose Fernandez. Chen went 46-32 with a 3.72 ERA in 117 career starts in four years with the Baltimore Orioles.

Fantasy Tip: Chen is an underrated fantasy player, and the move to the National League and a pitcher's park should do wonders for him. He's not a strikeout pitcher, but he's good at keeping the ball on the ground, and if he continues to do that, he could be a bargain as you round out your fake pitching staff depth in the later rounds.

Free-agent SP Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles) agreed to a five-year deal with the Miami Marlins Tuesday, Jan. 12. The deal includes a vesting option for a sixth year.

Fantasy Tip: Chen will benefit from the move from Camden Yards to the National League. He's a solid SP3 in fantasy with some upside.

Marlins | Miami could pursue Wei-Yin Chen

Sun, 10 Jan 2016 07:17:05 -0800

The Miami Marlins are reportedly showing interest in free-agent SP Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles), according to multiple major league sources. However, no move appears imminent.

Fantasy Tip: Chen's fantasy value would be boosted by a move from the hitter-friendly AL East to the offensively-challenged NL East. The 30-year-old left-hander went 11-8 with a 3.34 ERA in 31 starts for Baltimore last season, with 153 strikeouts in 191 1/3 innings. Chen should be viewed as a SP3 in mixed fantasy leagues.

Nationals | Gio Gonzalez on the block

Fri, 08 Jan 2016 06:38:16 -0800

Washington Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez could be dealt to facilitate the team signing free-agent SP Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles). The Nats are discussing such a scenario, sources say.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez slipped up a bit last year and has reached 30 years old. He's still a great SP3. Chen has a bit more upside as he's younger, but he's in that SP3 range as well.

Royals | KC won't overpay for Wei-Yin Chen

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 11:22:17 -0800

The Kansas City Royals like free-agent SP Wei-Yin Chen (Royals) but aren't ready to go to six years or pay him $100 million on a five-year deal, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Chen has been pretty consistent in his days with the Orioles despite pitching in a heavily favored hitter's park. He's underrated as a strikeout artist for fantasy owners, too, and he'd certainly benefit from a move to the Royals. There's a nice buying opportunity here for 2016 drafts.

Royals | KC eyeing two FA starters

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 10:20:08 -0800

Free-agent SPs Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles) and Yovani Gallardo (Rangers) are receiving interest from the Kansas City Royals. Chen is likely the top left-handed free-agent pitcher still on the market, so they push more for him. Kansas City is also interested in free-agent SP Scott Kazmir (Astros).

Fantasy Tip: Chen is certainly an underrated starter both in real life and in fantasy, and a move to KC would be a boost to his fantasy value moving away from hitter-friendly Camden Yards. Something similar could be said about Gallardo after he pitched his home games in one of the best all-around hitter's parks in baseball. Look for both to present nice buying opportunities in fantasy drafts next spring.

Orioles | Wei-Yin Chen unlikely back to BAL

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 10:15:52 -0800

Free-agent SP Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles) is unlikely to re-sign with the Baltimore Orioles. The team seems to have moved on after learning he's seeking a five-year, $100 million deal.

Fantasy Tip: Chen will be a mid-to-back-end rotation guy in fantasy whenever he signs with a team.

Giants | San Francisco seeking another starter

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 14:44:03 -0800

Free-agent SPs Mike Leake (Giants), Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles) and Ian Kennedy (Padres) are all of interest to the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: San Francisco is looking for another hurler to fill out their starting rotation. Leake and Chen are low-end grabs in seasonal leagues because of their lack of strikeout upside, and should be reserved for deep mixed formats and usage as streamers in favorable matchups. Kennedy has upside as an end-of-the-rotation arm for your virtual rotation, especially if he sticks in the National League.

Nationals | Nats could pursue Wei-Yin Chen

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 18:03:22 -0800

The Washington Nationals may decide to pursue free-agent SP Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles) if they are unable to sign free-agent SP Mike Leake (Giants).

Fantasy Tip: The Nationals are looking to fill a void in their starting rotation created by the departure of Jordan Zimmermann through free agency. Chen went 11-8 with a 3.34 ERA in 31 starts for Baltimore in 2015 and is 46-34 with a 3.72 career ERA. His fantasy value is certain to receive a boost if he makes the move from the hitter-friendly AL East to the NL East and he makes a solid middle-of-the-rotation option in all fantasy formats.
