Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow is looking at bullpen help and a possible bat for the outfield in 2014, saying the team will spend some money on outside resources after a wholescale gutting of its payroll in recent years. "We're going to make some investments in bringing in some players from outside the organization," Luhnow said, "with the goal in mind to help us be more competitive, to shore up the bullpen, maybe add another bat to the lineup."

"When you have a lot of right-handers in the mix and to have a left-hander with his type of Major League experience and success and track record, it can only help us," Luhnow said. "He's got a strong chance to be in our rotation all year long, and we're hoping that's the Erik Bedard that's had tremendous success already in his big league career."

Although new Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow would like to see where C Jason Castro and C Humberto Quintero are with their progress come spring training, Luhnow admitted he will look through catchers recently non-tendered by other clubs. "We're doing our due diligence on all the non-tenders to try and figure out if there's a fit," Luhnow said. "I'm not sure we're going to be in a position where we can give any guarantees. But the later you go prior to spring training, if guys want an opportunity to come compete for a role – that guaranteed – that's something we're going to be looking at."
