Redskins | QB decision coming this week

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 18:02:37 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was benched in favor of QB Colt McCoy in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans. After the game, head coach Jay Gruden said Sunday, Oct. 19, that a decision on the starting quarterback for Week 8 against the Dallas Cowboys will be made during the week. It's uncertain if QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) is an option.

Redskins | Robert Griffin limited Thursday

Thu, 16 Oct 2014 15:13:55 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 16.

Fantasy Tip: RG3 began practicing with the team this week but isn't anywhere near returning to game action. Be patient in deeper leagues. You can obviously avoid him at FantasyScore for the forseeable future.

Redskins | Robert Griffin limited Wednesday

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 13:46:54 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) was officially listed as limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin isn't close to returning to game action, but it's a good sign that he's back on the practice field. If you have room to stash in standard leagues, it might be close to that time where you would consider picking him up off the waiver wire if his previous owner cut him.

Redskins | Robert Griffin to return to starting job

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 13:28:41 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) "looked fine" and had "a little bounce in to his step" in on-field drills Wednesday, Oct. 15, and head coach Jay Gruden said Griffin will return to his starting quarterback job when doctors have cleared him to return to action. "He looks good so far. He's making good progress as we knew he would, the type of worker he is. But making progress in the training room and making progress in the practice field are two entirely different things. We have to make sure he gets right both mentally and physically before he gets back on the field," Gruden said.

Fantasy Tip: Kirk Cousins has struggled during the team's four-game losing streak, so he hasn't helped his cause to make this a quarterback controversy when Griffin is healthy. Cousins isn't the smartest option for your FantasyScore lineups this weekend, even against the Tennessee Titans.

Redskins | Robert Griffin not close to playing

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 09:09:55 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) will throw to receivers during practice Wednesday, Oct. 15, but is not close to being ready to play in a game, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin appears to be several weeks away from returning to the lineup. Kirk Cousins likely will continue to be the team's starting quarterback, but owners should look to use a better quarterback to start. Cousins costs $7,000 on FantasyScore this week.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin does not appear to be ready for Week 7 but may return to the field in a few weeks. Kirk Cousins probably will continue to start in Griffin's place but may not be the best starting option for owners.

Redskins | Robert Griffin won't be back soon

Tue, 07 Oct 2014 14:14:08 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) will not be back on the field in the near future, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Griffin wasn't in a walking boot Monday, Oct. 6, and he looked to be in great shape while on the sidelines throwing passes to his teammates. Gruden said Griffin is unlikely to join the team soon in practice. The next step will likely be to have Griffin increase his workload on a treadmill.

Fantasy Tip: In a shallow league, there's justification in dumping Griffin to the waiver wire. By the time he makes it back this season (if he even does), fantasy football schedules will be nearly over, and there is no guarantee that he'll be near 100 percent when he's back on the field.

Redskins | Robert Griffin does some work

Sat, 04 Oct 2014 09:04:45 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) was on the field for the stretching segment of practice Saturday, Oct. 4, but did not participate in any position drills. Griffin wore cleats on both of his feet and appeared to be jogging fairly well. The team does not have a definite timetable for Griffin's return.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has missed several weeks because of his ankle injury and may not be close to returning at this point. Kirk Cousins will continue to start in Griffin's place. Cousins may not be a good option this week on FantasyScore at $7,500 since he is facing the Seattle Seahawks.

Redskins | RGIII accepting of backup role?

Thu, 25 Sep 2014 18:01:28 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) could return as the team's backup If QB Kirk Cousins plays well in the coming weeks, and according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the team believes that Griffin is a "team guy" and would accept a backup role.

Fantasy Tip: Although a potential quarterback controversy is brewing, it won't amount to much if Cousins doesn't play well while Griffin is sidelined. Cousins has looked promising in limited action, but it will be interesting to see how he performs now that defenses will be game planning specifically for him. In the meantime, he is an unproven commodity and a risky play at FantasyScore.

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 12:14:49 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 19, and has been ruled out for Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin likely will miss a few more weeks because of his injury. Kirk Cousins will be the starter while Griffin is sidelined. Cousins costs $7,600 on FantasyScore this week, but owners probably could find a better option to use.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins a pocket passer

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 09:43:00 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is more of a pocket passer than QB Robert Griffin III, and Cousins sees the field better. Cousins kept the team out of danger in Week 2 by quickly throwing the ball at a receiver's feet with a rusher in his face instead of trying to force the ball downfield like Griffin has frequently done. Cousins may not be as dangerous as Griffin in zone-read plays, but Cousins has shown he can make good, quick decisions in the pocket after going through his progressions quickly.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins is still learning, but he could find success in place of Griffin, because this system seems to fit him the best. His numbers won't always be eye-popping, but for instance, he could easily return great value on his $7,600 FantasyScore salary against the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend.

Redskins | Robert Griffin could return in eight weeks

Wed, 17 Sep 2014 14:11:47 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) could return around eight weeks after head coach Jon Gruden said Griffin will be in a cast for the next 10 days. After that, he'll likely spend four to six weeks rehabbing his dislocated left ankle. QB Kirk Cousins will continue to start in place of Griffin in the meantime.

Fantasy Tip: You can avoid Griffin at FantasyScore for a while, and he may not be of much use when he returns, either. Meanwhile, Cousins ($7,600) is an attractive option against the Philadelphia Eagles if you're willing to pass up some of the bigger names at quarterback.

Redskins | Robert Griffin will wear cast

Wed, 17 Sep 2014 11:50:43 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) will wear a cast on his dislocated ankle for 10 days and then will be re-evaluated after the cast is taken off.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin will be sidelined several weeks because of his injury, so owners will need to look elsewhere for a starting quarterback. Kirk Cousins could be a waiver wire option for desperate owners.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins better suited for offense?

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 14:09:44 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins has the skill set suited for what head coach Jay Gruden wants to do with the offense, according to a person with knowledge of Gruden's thinking. Gruden thinks Cousins can succeed in the offense better than QB Robert Griffin III (ankle), but Gruden understood it would have been impossible to make a quarterback change without Griffin being injured. Gruden was having a hard time getting Griffin to grasp the drop-back passing system the last few months.

Fantasy Tip: Cousins looked good replacing Griffin, going 22-for-33 for 250 yards and two touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has another nice matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3, and he might be worth a play in FantasyScore with what will likely be a bargain price.

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 12:11:49 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) will not be placed on season-ending Reserve/Injured, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Redskins | No fractures for Robert Griffin

Mon, 15 Sep 2014 09:53:30 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) isn't dealing with a fractured ankle, according to an MRI exam, and he doesn't think surgery is necessary. The best-case scenario for Griffin to recover from the injury is six to eight weeks, according to several surgeons.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin may not have to miss the rest of the season, but there's a good chance he won't be the same when he returns. Kirk Cousins will take over and isn't a bad option as a backup QB for fantasy if you're in need.

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 13:51:07 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) has been diagnosed with a dislocated ankle after leaving the Week 2 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is expected to undergo further testing Monday, Sept. 15, to determine the severity of his injury.

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 10:54:27 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 2 after suffering an ankle injury during the game.

Redskins | Robert Griffin struggles in opener

Mon, 08 Sep 2014 05:08:42 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III struggled to move the offense down the field in the team's Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans Sunday, Sept. 7, and he didn't show any explosive running plays, either. He finished the day going 29-for-37 for 267 yards and a lost fumble, and he looked uncomfortable and unsure of himself. The Texans forced the Redskins to go on long, sustained drives, instead of allowing them to beat them with big plays. Griffin completed all eight passes to WR DeSean Jackson, but he averaged just 2.4 yards per catch.

Fantasy Tip: It was only one game, but as Keim mentions, other teams may very well follow suit with the Texans' game plan against Griffin and the offense. With a new offensive game plan in Washington, until we see Griffin become comfortable in the pocket, he may be a risky start in FantasyScore.

Redskins | Robert Griffin III regressing?

Thu, 28 Aug 2014 14:51:31 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III isn't playing consistently, according to ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Ron Jaworski. Jaworski said Griffin must learn to throw from the pocket instead of running so frequently. Jaworski also added that Griffin's mechanics have worsened, including his footwork and throwing.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has had a rough offseason and preseason and in the minds of many has fallen out of QB1 consideration. He' still worth a starting spot on your roster, though, especially considering his dual threat ability.

Redskins | No QB controversy in Washington

Mon, 25 Aug 2014 16:13:12 -0700

Washington Redskins QBs Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins aren't involved in any kind of quarterback controversy, according to head coach Jay Gruden. The first-team offense has yet to score a touchdown in the preseason, and Cousins has somewhat outplayed Griffin so far.

Fantasy Tip: We're still in the preseason, folks. Griffin would have to really tank early in the season or get injured for the 'Skins to think about a switch to Cousins. There is a lot to worry about with Griffin, but because of his poor performance in the preseason so far, he could be undervalued on your draft day.

Redskins | Robert Griffin III dinged in exhibition game

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 08:07:34 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (thigh) is dealing with a bruised thigh suffered in the preseason game Monday, Aug. 18. Griffin said it is "nothing to worry about" but that he must improve his sliding. He was hit hard a few times after the end of some scrambles and took a cumbersome attempt at a slide. "When he gets out of the pocket, he needs to protect himself," said head coach Jay Gruden.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin's durability is the chief concern to fantasy players trying to capitalize on his sleeper potential. In the middle rounds, the risk is alleviated, though not erased.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins outperforming RGIII?

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 11:55:14 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins was the best quarterback on the team during the Redskins-Patriots joint practices, according to ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Reiss said Cousins had better mechanics, was more decisive with his ball release and ran the offense better than QB Robert Griffin III.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin will likely remain the starter, but it's not encouraging if the backup is starting to look better than him. If Griffin can stay healthy, he still has the ability to produce at a high level under new head coach Jay Gruden.

Redskins | Robert Griffin III won't have many set run plays

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 07:18:05 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III's designed running plays might be "few and far between," according to head coach Jay Gruden. He still has the green light to scramble as the situation dictates. "I feel good where he's at," Gruden said. "He made some serious strides just in the spring working in the pocket and delivering throws and pulling it down and running when he had to run. That comes naturally but also comes with a lot of reps and playing the position."

Fantasy Tip: Griffin is a low-end QB1 at best right now.

Redskins | Robert Griffin III praises Alfred Morris

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 11:07:41 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III thinks RB Alfred Morris is the biggest weapon on the team's offense. "I think everyone would lean towards DeSean or Pierre or Jordan Reed," Griffin III said when asked who the biggest weapon in the Redskins' offense is. "I think it's Alfred. With him, defenses have to make a decision whether to puts guys in the box to stop him or leave the box light and allow Alfred to go between the tackles and lure in the safeties. I think it will be interesting to see what defenses do against him."

Fantasy Tip: There is every reason to believe that Morris will benefit from the addition of DeSean Jackson to the offense and a healthy Robert Griffin III. Morris should return to top form in 2014.

Redskins | Robert Griffin III to work with Terry Shea

Mon, 07 Jul 2014 07:45:34 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will work with quarterbacks coach Terry Shea next week to tune up before training camp. Griffin worked with Shea earlier in the offseason. Shea focused hard on Griffin's fundamentals, including narrowing his base, getting his feet to turn with his body in the pocket and raising where Griffin held the ball - at times last year he held it too low, leading to a wind-up throw.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin appears to be working hard this offseason to have a bounce-back season.

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III looks more explosive this season, according to offensive coordinator Sean McVay. McVay also said he expects Griffin to return to his 2012 form now that he is playing without a knee brace. "I don't think there's any question: he looks explosive," McVay said. "He looks like he is exactly what he was in the 2012 season. I think people underestimate when you have a brace on your knee how much that truly restricts you... "What I think is going to help us most this year is that everybody in that building is going to be for us being successful and for us winning," Griffin said. "There are no ulterior motives. Redskins | Robert Griffin III wants to maximize each moment

Thu, 03 Jul 2014 11:23:50 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III wants to maximize each moment he has with his teammates in 2014, something he missed out on last offseason as he worked his way back from injury. "That's what people don't understand," Griffin said. "Being around my teammates, being able to work with them, condition with them and lift with them, just the locker room talk is all so important. It's important to me. "Last year, I didn't have an opportunity to do that, but I didn't take that mindset into the season and say, 'This is going to hurt me. This is going to hurt me.' I'm going keep playing the hand that's dealt to me. Last year, I had the rehab. This year, I don't have to do that. I'm going to take full advantage of that."

Fantasy Tip: It should only help Griffin to spend more time around his teammates the rest of the summer. Consider Griffin a low-end QB1 at this point.

"He did an excellent job above the neck," McVay said, "as far as absorbing the new system, some of the terminology. … He's done an excellent job translating his knowledge in the meeting room onto the field, recognizing some of those looks. Some of the audible situations we'll give him the opportunity to call things at the line. Redksins | Robert Griffin looking to improve pocket passing

Fri, 13 Jun 2014 11:25:07 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III is ready to become more of a pocket passer, knowing it will be beneficial to his long-term success. New head coach Jay Gruden will implement more elements of a controlled passing game, as he did with the Cincinnati Bengals, including play-action, something Griffin has excelled in.

Fantasy Tip: While Griffin's running ability makes him a more valuable commodity, the risk of injury involved with that may not be worth it. However, Griffin staying in the pocket more should be an encouragement for those looking to draft him this offseason. For now, consider him a fringe QB1.

Redskins | Robert Griffin says offense coming together

Thu, 05 Jun 2014 17:45:59 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III said the players have done a good job picking up the new offensive system but need more time to master the offense. "I think it is coming together nicely. The quarterback room is doing really well and we're ahead on a lot of things. But that's where we're supposed to be. We've got to have that mastery of the offense. But coming out here to the field … doing some talking at the line, getting some things under control and getting the looks that we need to be in, it's been good," Griffin said.

Redskins | Robert Griffin looking smooth

Wed, 04 Jun 2014 09:56:09 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III looks effortless in his dropbacks and throwing mechanics during organized team activities now that he isn't impeded by his knee brace.

Fantasy Tip: Coming off a rough season that was set back by injuries, Griffin will have a full offseason to prepare, and it looks like it's already doing him good. He won't come cheaply in drafts, though, so be prepared to pay a hefty penny for his services as your QB1. It could be well worth the price, however.

Redskins | Robert Griffin working on mechanics

Thu, 29 May 2014 13:01:29 -0700

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III, who spent part of the offseason working out with quarterback guru Terry Shea, has been focusing on using a quicker release - more over the top - and having a more narrow base when he throws. Head coach Jay Gruden said the team has harped on Griffin's fundamentals, and he likes how Griffin has responded. "This is all a learning process for him," Gruden said. "It's important for him to take natural strides every day and get better. The thing about Robert is that is his intent when he comes to work every day. He's a sponge for information."

Fantasy Tip: Griffin comes with injury risk in fantasy drafts, but when he's healthy and performing at a high level, he's among the elite fantasy football quarterbacks. A full and healthy offseason and a star receiver in DeSean Jackson will help him tremendously in 2014. For the price this year, Griffin is an attractive QB1.

Redskins | DeSean Jackson, Robert Griffin building chemistry

Thu, 29 May 2014 13:00:08 -0700

Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson and QB Robert Griffin III continue to build chemistry during organized team activities this week. "Our chemistry right now is a work in progress," said Jackson, who tweaked his left hamstring and sat out part of practice but said afterward he was fine. "The more we get out here and keep working and staying after practice and running routes and getting our timing down, I think sooner or later we'll be in great shape."

Fantasy Tip: If RGIII can stay healthy all year, the production that both of these players can have is scary. Jackson should continue to be a productive WR2 with more value in PPR leagues.
