Seahawks | Seattle looking at free-agent quarterbacks

Mon, 15 May 2017 11:12:56 -0700

Free-agent QBs Colin Kaepernick (49ers) and Robert Griffin III (Browns) have drawn interest from the Seattle Seahawks as possible backups to QB Russell Wilson.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson's job is not in jeopardy. Kaepernick and Griffin both possess similar playing styles to Wilson, though, so signing either of them as Wilson's backup makes sense. Continue to draft Wilson as a QB1.

Browns | Robert Griffin III released

Fri, 10 Mar 2017 09:43:52 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III was released Friday, March 10.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin was set to receive a $750,000 roster bonus Saturday, so this was a no-brainer for the Browns. Based on his recent play and poor track record for staying healthy, RG3 could be waiting a while before he gets another opportunity in the NFL.

Browns | Robert Griffin III likely to be cut

Thu, 09 Mar 2017 12:48:40 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III is expected to be released after Cleveland acquired QB Brock Osweiler.

Fantasy Tip: RG3 had a glimmer of hope if he were to have stayed in Cleveland, but all of that can be forgotten. He may struggle to find a roster spot in 2017 and shouldn't be on anyone's radar at this time.

Browns | Cleveland wants another quarterback

Thu, 02 Mar 2017 12:30:08 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III and company may have more competition in 2017. Head coach Hue Jackson said the Browns will aggressively pursue a quarterback this offseason, but added that they'll be fine if Griffin and QBs Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan comprise the Browns' quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Whether or not Cleveland signs or drafts a quarterback, that quarterback should not be starting on fantasy teams, at least not on a weekly basis. Griffin might be the best bet, but we already know he can't stay on the field.

Browns | Robert Griffin III expected for program

Wed, 01 Mar 2017 09:08:30 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III is expected to take part in the April offseason program, according to director of football operations Sashi Brown. Brown wouldn't commit to the $750,000 bonus Griffin is in line for in March.

Fantasy Tip: RG III is a mediocre QB2 in fantasy realms, but he showed some flashes with little to work with. He could be a matchup play in DFS.

Browns | Robert Griffin's future uncertain

Wed, 08 Feb 2017 11:27:33 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III is scheduled to receive a $750,000 bonus on March 11, but the Browns may consider releasing him before that date if they do not think he is in their plans. He is scheduled to make $6 million in 2017, which may be considered too much money if he is not the Browns' starting quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has dealt with injuries for most of his career and probably will be available this offseason. It is not known if he will be able to find a starting job but likely will sign with a team as a possible backup. Griffin probably should be avoided in fantasy leagues even if he starts for a team in 2017.

Browns | Robert Griffin III decent in finale

Sun, 01 Jan 2017 14:52:24 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III threw for 232 yards and had two touchdowns and an interception in a 27-24 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fantasy Tip: Whether the Browns go in another direction at quarterback remains to be seen. They are unlikely to send Terrelle Pryor back to QB because Pryor had over 1,000 receiving yards in 2016. Griffin could get another chance, unless the Browns select a QB in the draft and put him to use immediately.

Browns | RG3 has 50-50 chance to start in 2017

Sat, 31 Dec 2016 16:55:41 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III has roughly a 50 percent chance at returning as the starter for the team in 2017, according to ESPNCleveland's Tony Grossi.

Fantasy Tip: The upcoming draft lacks a top-flight prospect at the position, while the top free-agent quarterbacks figure to be players such as Tyrod Taylor and Mike Glennon. The Browns are reportedly interested in trading for New England Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo as well. It could be argued any or all the alternatives may be better than Griffin, who has shown next to nothing while also struggling to stay healthy yet again.

Fri, 30 Dec 2016 14:16:49 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (concussion) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 30, and is not on the injury report for Week 17.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin will be the starting quarterback as long as he does not suffer a setback leading up to the game. He has struggled in the last two games and should be avoided in all leagues.

Browns | Robert Griffin likely will start

Thu, 29 Dec 2016 10:16:14 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (concussion) likely will start against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17 as long as he does not suffer a setback.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has not thrown for more than 200 yards in any of his three games since returning to the lineup and has zero passing touchdowns during that span. His running ability does help his fantasy value a bit, but he should be avoided in all leagues.

Browns | Robert Griffin III clears protocol

Thu, 29 Dec 2016 05:38:16 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (concussion) was cleared to return to practice Thursday, Dec. 29, by an independent neurologist.

Fantasy Tip: The Pittsburgh Steelers are resting their Big Three on offense, and they could wind up resting some defensive starters. RG III would be worth the flyer in DFS if he's cleared to start this week.

Browns | Robert Griffin III sitting out

Wed, 28 Dec 2016 09:43:55 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (concussion) remains out of practice Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Fantasy Tip: The Pittsburgh Steelers are a daunting matchup against the position the last five weeks. If RG III can't go, Cody Kessler will have his feet to the fire. Outside of two-quarterback leagues or a DFS flyer, Kessler has little to offer in fantasy.

Browns | Robert Griffin III unsure for Week 17

Sun, 25 Dec 2016 10:47:40 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (concussion) suffered a concussion Saturday, Dec. 24, against the San Diego Chargers. His status for the regular-season finale is not known.

Fantasy Tip: If Griffin is unable to make the start, the team will turn to Cody Kessler once again. This may be Kessler's audition for the regular job as well. Griffin hasn't been lighting up the board in his return, but the ball is in Cleveland's court regarding a return for 2017.

Browns | RG3 leaves win with concussion

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 14:07:33 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (concussion) left the Week 16 game against the San Diego Chargers due to concussion and he was unable to return.

Fantasy Tip: RG3 finished 17 for 25 with 164 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and 42 yards on six runs before departing. Even if he is able to return from yet another injury he isn't a very good fantasy option in Week 17.

Browns | Robert Griffin remains starter

Mon, 19 Dec 2016 13:55:33 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III will start again in Week 16. He will be on a short leash, however, with QB Cody Kessler ready to take over.

Fantasy Tip: Yes, Griffin is a dual-threat quarterback, but he's just not that good. He's much too risky of a play in the fantasy postseason. In fact, it's probably best to avoid any Browns at this point.

Browns | Robert Griffin finds end zone

Sun, 18 Dec 2016 12:58:17 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III went 17-for-28 for 196 yards against the Buffalo Bills in Week 15. He also rushed for 48 yards and one touchdown on eight carries during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin may have had his best game of the season in Week 15 and probably will start the final two games as long as he is healthy. He will be facing the San Diego Chargers next week but should be avoided in all leagues.

Browns | Robert Griffin III must improve

Sat, 17 Dec 2016 19:23:54 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III needs to show "a jump in performance" against the Buffalo Bills in Week 15, according to head coach Hue Jackson, and offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton said the team is counting on Griffin to be more consistent.

Fantasy Tip: If Griffin wants to make a case to be Cleveland's starter next season, he needs to show something in the final weeks. In the meantime, he should be avoided in all fantasy formats.

Browns | Robert Griffin to start again

Mon, 12 Dec 2016 15:52:30 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III will be the starting quarterback against the Buffalo Bills in Week 15 as long as he is healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin was only able to throw for 104 yards in his first game since Week 1 but will continue to start so the team can see if he can be a long-term option at the position. He should be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

Browns | Robert Griffin III weak in comeback

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 13:42:45 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III was 12-for-27 for 104 yards and an interception in his return to the field Sunday, Dec. 11, against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin is not a starter by any stretch of the imagination in this year's fantasy leagues. He could be a late-round flyer for next year's drafts if the next few weeks show signs of improvement. Anything special Griffin did today was icing on the cake, as he came back to the field following a three-month absence.

Browns | Robert Griffin III to help ground game?

Fri, 09 Dec 2016 20:37:33 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III will "add spice" to the running game, running backs coach Kirby Wilson said Friday, Dec. 9.

Fantasy Tip: After a solid start to the year, Isaiah Crowell hasn't run for more than 44 yards in each of his last five games. Don't expect much of a change with Griffin under center, and Crowell remains a risky flex play in Week 14.

Browns | RG3 coming off injured reserve

Fri, 09 Dec 2016 11:08:53 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III was activated off the Reserve/Injured list Friday, Dec. 9.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns hope to get a four-game look at RG3 before deciding what direction to go this offseason. Given the current state of things in Cleveland, don't expect it to go well. He can ignored in fantasy leagues.

Browns | Robert Griffin III to start Week 14

Thu, 08 Dec 2016 07:56:36 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) was named the starter for Week 14 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: The Bengals have been decent against the QB position over the last five weeks. This wouldn't be the matchup to start RG III after a lengthy layoff.

Browns | Robert Griffin on track to start

Wed, 07 Dec 2016 12:51:40 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) likely will be the starting quarterback in Week 14 as long as he does not suffer a setback during practice this week, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has not played since Week 1 because of the injury, so it is not known how much he will be asked to do during the game. He dealt with a number of injuries during his career and should not be trusted by fantasy owners. He should be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

Browns | 'All signs point' to RG3 starting

Mon, 05 Dec 2016 09:02:41 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) is likely to get at least one more chance to prove he can be the team's quarterback of the future and "all signs point" to it happening over the final month of the season, according to ESPN's Pat McManamon.

Fantasy Tip: To say the quarterback position in Cleveland has been a revolving door would be an understatement. Griffin should get his shot provided he is fully healthy, but he is an injury-prone player who will be operating behind a porous offensive line and a team whose only motivation right now might be to avoid going winless. He can avoided in fantasy.

Browns | Robert Griffin will get extended look

Tue, 29 Nov 2016 17:03:42 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) will keep the starting job for the remainder of the season "once he gets back in there," according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Fantasy Tip: It makes sense, as the Browns really haven't been able to truly evaluate their big offseason acquisition and whether or not he has a future in Cleveland. Plus, the team really isn't going anywhere with Josh McCown under center, while rookie Cody Kessler (concussion) is still out for the foreseeable future. Griffin has the skillset to pull off a Colin Kaepernick-like resurgence, so he is worth monitoring.

Browns | Robert Griffin cleared for contact

Tue, 29 Nov 2016 08:43:09 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) has been cleared for contact Tuesday, Nov. 29. He will practice during the bye week with QB Cody Kessler (concussion) and QB Josh McCown, and the team will decide on a starter.

Fantasy Tip: Whomever comes out the starter has minimal fantasy appeal. They have a so-so matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals next week, but their upside isn't high enough to warrant a start.

Browns | Cleveland hopes Robert Griffin can return

Sun, 27 Nov 2016 08:16:51 -0800

The Cleveland Browns are hoping QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) can start again this season once he is cleared to play, according to sources. Griffin may stay on the sidelines if QB Cody Kessler plays well in multiple games.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has returned to practice and could start in the next few weeks if Kessler does not play well. Owners should avoid the Browns quarterback no matter which one starts.

Browns | Robert Griffin III returns to practice

Wed, 23 Nov 2016 07:22:01 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) has been designated to return from the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Nov. 23, and has returned to practice.

Fantasy Tip: RG III would only have value in leagues that play two quarterbacks. However, with them activating him, you'd have to think they would play him when he's fit to return.

Browns | Robert Griffin to practice, not play

Tue, 22 Nov 2016 21:04:33 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) will return to practice this week but has not been cleared for contact or game action, according to head coach Hue Jackson.

Fantasy Tip: That was the expectation last week, and Cody Kessler landing in the concussion protocol has not changed that. RG3 could still come back before the season ends, but there's no incentive to rush him and no fantasy value if/when he returns this season. Josh McCown will start in Week 12.

Browns | RG3 to begin practice next week

Browns | RG3 cleared for non-contact activities

Wed, 16 Nov 2016 22:12:56 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) has been cleared for non-contact activities but isn't going to practice yet, the team announced Wednesday, Nov. 16. Griffin still needs to be cleared for contact, but he's making strides toward seeing the field again this year. Browns head coach Hue Jackson said Griffin will not practice this week.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin isn't anywhere close to return to game action. He might be back at some time this season, but fantasy owners shouldn't expect much.

Browns | No contact for Robert Griffin

Wed, 16 Nov 2016 09:06:10 -0800

Updating an earlier report, Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) has not been cleared for contact in practice, so the 21-day window to activate him has not begun.

Fantasy Tip: That means he's highly unlikely to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unless the team wants to see if he can still be the future of the team, there really isn't much of a point to run him out there at this stage. RG III doesn't have much fantasy luster with most QB bye weeks behind us.

Browns | Robert Griffin cleared to practice

Wed, 16 Nov 2016 06:57:11 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) has been cleared to practice. He'll meet with the team Wednesday, Nov. 16, to determine the next step.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to see him having enough time to be ready to start this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unless the team wants to see if he can still be the future of the team, there really isn't much of a point to run him out there at this stage. RG III doesn't have much fantasy luster with most QB bye weeks behind us.

Browns | Robert Griffin could begin practicing

Tue, 15 Nov 2016 08:26:37 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) could return to practicing this week, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: It's still a long shot, and in a season in the tank, there isn't a lot of reasoning to throw RG III back into the fire. He's not worth stashing at this point.

Browns | Robert Griffin should return this year

Mon, 14 Nov 2016 13:28:40 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) is on pace to play again in 2016, according to executive vice president Sashi Brown.

Fantasy Tip: Assuming Griffin will be fully healthy, he should be able to take over the starting position right away. The Browns need a spark after a 0-10 start, but Griffin will be too risky to start in fantasy lineups right away. If he was dropped, though, he'll be worth picking up when he returns.

Browns | League looking at Robert Griffin III

Sat, 12 Nov 2016 14:32:08 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) was spotted throwing on the sidelines to WR Jordan Payton before the Thursday, Nov. 10, game against the Baltimore Ravens. League rules prohibit players on injured reserve less than an hour before kickoff, but photo evidence does exist that Griffin finished working out before the hour kicked in.

Fantasy Tip: You should still leave Griffin on the waiver wire, but it is good news to see him working out once again.

Browns | Robert Griffin III timetable unknown

Thu, 10 Nov 2016 21:52:47 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) is improving, but it is still too soon to tell if he will play again this year, head coach Hue Jackson said Thursday, Nov. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Griffin does return this year, there is no guarantee he will reclaim the starting job, let alone be effective. He can be left on the waiver wire.

Browns | Robert Griffin won't need surgery

Tue, 18 Oct 2016 11:29:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) will not need surgery on his injured shoulder, barring any setbacks. Griffin's four-week checkup revealed healing in Griffin's fractured coracoid bone in his left shoulder, according to sources. Griffin is on the short-term Reserve/Injured list and wouldn't be able to return to action until Nov. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Cody Kessler has actually played pretty well as a rookie in place of Griffin and McCown. Either one could very well start if/when they're ready to play again, but it's Kessler's team for the time being. The rule of thumb, though, is to avoid any starting Cleveland quarterback.

Browns | Robert Griffin may need surgery

Mon, 03 Oct 2016 12:10:43 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) will be evaluated this week, but it's not clear at this point if Griffin will need surgery or just more rest.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin should be nowhere near a fantasy starting lineup right now. In all honesty, none of the Browns' quarterbacks should be. That being said, it's not time to release Griffin just yet. If he doesn't have the surgery, he may still be able to play again this season.

Browns | Cleveland on fifth QB in five games

Mon, 19 Sep 2016 17:31:36 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Cody Kessler will be the fifth starting quarterback in as many games for the Browns. Going back to the last two weeks of last season, the Browns have started former QBs Johnny Manziel and Austin Davis and QBs Robert Griffin III (shoulder), Josh McCown (shoulder) and now Kessler. Cleveland is the second team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to start five different quarterbacks in five straight games, according to Elias.

Fantasy Tip: This is just further proof that the Browns' quarterback position cannot be trusted. The lack of consistency will be a damper to Josh Gordon's fantasy value when he does return, and it hurts the rest of the team, too. Corey Coleman, Gary Barnidge, Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson are still startable, but they're unlikely to reach their ceiling with an unproven rookie quarterback at the helm.

Browns | Robert Griffin to miss at least 10 weeks

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 06:59:05 -0700

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) is now expected to be sidelined for 10 to 12 weeks with a fractured coracoid bone in his left shoulder, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: There's a good chance that Griffin could miss the remainder of the 2016 season. QB Josh McCown will serve as Cleveland's starting quarterback but is not an ideal fantasy option and should be viewed as a midrange QB2 at best.

Browns | Cleveland won't trade for quarterback

Mon, 12 Sep 2016 15:03:07 -0700

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said the Browns will not trade for a quarterback despite QB Robert Griffin III (shoulder) being placed on the Reserve/Injured list. QB Josh McCown will start, with QB Cody Kessler likely serving as the backup. As stated earlier, Griffin will be reevaluated in three to four weeks.

Fantasy Tip: McCown held his own last year and looked Gary Barnidge's way frequently. The tight end's stock increases a little bit with McCown under center, but for the most part the Browns should function close to the same as with Griffin. McCown should not be viewed as a starting fantasy quarterback, however.
