Texans | Brock Osweiler has support

Thu, 02 Feb 2017 19:46:36 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler has all the traits to be a successful quarterback, according to retired head coach Gary Kubiak, and Kubiak said Osweiler is "going to be fine" in the long run.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Kubiak's optimism, Osweiler likely played himself into a quarterback competition with his poor performance this season. Even if he breaks camp as the starter, he doesn't need to be drafted.

Texans | HOU QBs to compete for starting gig

Thu, 02 Feb 2017 05:44:02 -0800

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler and QB Tom Savage will compete, likely with a quarterback from the 2017 NFL draft, for the starting spot next season, according to owner Bob McNair. The Texans could draft a quarterback in the first or second rounds.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler or Savage would be a backup in fantasy if they win the job. There are some players to work with at the skill positions, and either could be a matchup play.

Texans | Owners says Brock Osweiler needs to step up

Wed, 01 Feb 2017 12:24:58 -0800

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said QB Brock Osweiler needs to step up his performance next season after he struggled in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler was bench near the end of the season because of his performance but did play the last few games because of an injury to Tom Savage. He probably will have to compete for the starting job during training camp but can be avoided in fantasy leagues if he wins the job.

Texans | Houston not committing to Brock Osweiler

Mon, 16 Jan 2017 10:04:34 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler received a slight but expected vote of non-confidence Monday, Jan. 16, as head coach Bill O'Brien told reporters it is too early to know if Osweiler will be the starting quarterback at season because the team has a lot of evaluating to do.

Fantasy Tip: The odds are overwhelming Houston adds a quarterback via the draft or free agency who can give Osweiler and/or Tom Savage a run for their money. With most if not all of the league's top-ranked defense likely to return in 2017, the pressure will be on the Texans' brass to improve the offense to the point to where they can make a Super Bowl run. A first-round quarterback selection cannot be ruled out, nor can the possibility Osweiler becomes the league's most highly paid backup.

Texans | Brock Osweiler regrets lost opportunities

Sun, 15 Jan 2017 19:14:52 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said he is disappointed he was unable to capitalize on the opportunities that presented themselves in the AFC Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots.

Fantasy Tip: Despite signing a big deal to join the Texans, Osweiler is no lock to start in 2017 after a terrible season. Even if he does start, he doesn't need to be drafted.

Texans | Brock Osweiler melts down in second half

Sat, 14 Jan 2017 21:24:41 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler played turnover-free ball in the first half before throwing three interceptions in the second half in a Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots. He finished 23-of-40 for 198 yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: Thus ends a wildly inconsistent and mostly disappointing season for Osweiler, who found C.J. Fiedorowicz from 10 yards out for his only score. Despite being only one season into a four-year, $72 million deal, the Texans will need to seriously consider adding another signal-caller in the offseason after spending most of 2016 calling plays out of fear their top quarterback would lose games for them. Osweiler will be far off the fantasy radar in most leagues in 2017.

Texans | Tom Savage to serve as No. 2 QB

Sat, 14 Jan 2017 06:11:09 -0800

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage will serve as the backup to QB Brock Osweiler for the Divisional round playoff game against the New England Patriots Saturday, Jan. 14. He was cleared from the concussion protocol Monday, Jan. 9, and was a full participant in practice throughout the week.

Texans | Brock Osweiler to start again

Sat, 07 Jan 2017 17:27:12 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 14 of his 25 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown and ran six times for 15 yards and a score in a 27-14 win over the Oakland Raiders Saturday, Jan. 7, and head coach Bill O'Brien said Osweiler will start in the divisional round.

Fantasy Tip: Compared to his usual numbers, this was a strong outing from Osweiler. A much tougher matchup likely awaits him next week, and he will be a reach for fantasy owners, even has a low-priced DFS play.

Texans | Brock Osweiler downplays argument

Wed, 04 Jan 2017 21:09:54 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler didn't elaborate on an argument he had at halftime with head coach Bill O'Brien during Week 17, and O'Brien chalked the situation up to the intensity of the game.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler is back in the starting lineup after a brief benching, and with Tom Savage ruled out for the playoff game, the Texans have no other choice but to live and die with Osweiler. He has been awful this year, but with limited options available and a friendly matchup against the Raiders, he could be worth a roll of the dice in DFS games.

Texans | Brandon Weeden to serve as backup

Texans | Brock Osweiler regains starting job

Tue, 03 Jan 2017 10:40:45 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler was named the starter for the team's AFC Wild-Card game against the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Fantasy Tip: This news likely confirms the playoffs will kick off with Osweiler and rookie Connor Cook under center. Riveting. Tom Savage is still in the league's concussion protocol and didn't exactly perform well enough in his brief time as the starter to give the Texans a reason to wait for him to return. Osweiler did manage to get DeAndre Hopkins involved last week, but it is going to be difficult to trust any Texan offensive players outside of Lamar Miller and perhaps C.J. Fiedorowicz this weekend.

Texans | Brock Osweiler expected to start

Mon, 02 Jan 2017 15:38:35 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler is expected to start against the Oakland Raiders in the wild-card round of the AFC playoffs due to QB Tom Savage (concussion) dealing with a concussion in Week 17, in the opinion of John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. Head coach Bill O'Brien will make an official decision on the starting quarterback Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has one of the better matchups of the week against the Oakland Raiders, but he has been consistently horrible throughout his first season with the Texans. Continue to avoid Osweiler.

Texans | Tom Savage has concussion

Sun, 01 Jan 2017 12:21:51 -0800

Updating previous items, Houston Texans QB Tom Savage (concussion) was determined to have a concussion at halftime of the Sunday, Jan. 1, game against the Tennessee Titans. QB Brock Osweiler is in the game.

Fantasy Tip: This could be worth monitoring in the coming days. Obviously Savage's health comes first, so the team may have to go with Osweiler in postseason play if Savage isn't cleared in concussion protocol. If you take part in playoff leagues, this will be a big factor. Otherwise, if your season is over, there could be a battle at QB heading into 2017.

Sun, 18 Dec 2016 11:14:21 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler was benched during the team's Week 15 game and has been replaced by QB Tom Savage. Osweiler threw two interceptions before leaving the game.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has struggled at times with his new team this season and it is not known if Osweiler will regain the starting job before the end of the season. Owners in all leagues should avoid the Texans quarterback situation no matter who starts.

Fri, 16 Dec 2016 18:33:49 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (thigh) was a full participant in practice Friday, Dec. 16, and isn't listed on the Week 15 injury report.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler hasn't been able to push the ball down the field all year, and he didn't even manage 100 passing yards against Jacksonville the first time around. He should be avoided in all formats in Week 15.

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (thigh) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler threw for a season-low 99 yards the first time he faced Jacksonville, and he shouldn't be starting in any format when he faces them again in Week 15.

Texans | Brock Osweiler takes part in practice

Wed, 14 Dec 2016 17:01:41 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (thigh) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has thrown for at least 200 yards in three of the last four games but has three touchdowns and five interceptions during that span. Owners in all leagues should passed over Osweiler and find another option to use.

Texans | Brock Osweiler does nothing again

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 21:50:27 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 14 of his 24 pass attempts for just 147 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in the Week 14 game against the Indianapolis Colts. He also rushed twice for minus-2 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has not only struggled this season, but he has been getting worse lately. He offers very little to fantasy owners, especially at this critical juncture of the season.

Texans | Brock Osweiler tosses two TDs

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 18:09:43 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 202 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 13 game against the Green Bay Packers in snowy conditions. He also ran three times for 20 yards.

Fantasy Tip: It was just Osweiler's fifth multi-touchdown game of the season and sixth outing in 12 starts with a completion percentage of 62.9 percent or better. He still remains more of a QB2 in most fantasy leagues heading into Week 14.

Texans | Brock Osweiler still starter

Mon, 28 Nov 2016 12:48:31 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler will remain the Texans' starting quarterback, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has arguably been the worst quarterback in the NFL this season in his first year with the Texans. He just cannot succeed no matter what defense he's playing. It's probably safe to drop him, but keep him on the bench if dropping is too drastic.

Texans | Brock Osweiler continues to struggle

Sun, 27 Nov 2016 22:04:22 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 22 of his 37 pass attempts for 246 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in the Week 12 game against the San Diego Chargers. He also ran three times for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler continues to make plenty of mistakes and this game resulted in a season-low 45.5 QB Rating. He cannot be trusted in fantasy leagues outside of formats requiring two starting signal callers.

Texans | Brock Osweiler mediocre on MNF

Mon, 21 Nov 2016 21:48:53 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 26 of his 39 pass attempts for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 11 game against the Oakland Raiders Monday, Nov. 21, in Mexico City. He also ran twice for 19 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler faced a favorable pass defense, but he still didn't do much and was on the losing end, too. Osweiler has been one of the bigger busts among the offseason signings, and he is nothing more than a low-end QB2 in most fantasy formats.

Texans | Brock Osweiler throws 2 TDs

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 14:42:42 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 14-for-27 passing for two touchdowns but only 99 yards. He did not turn over the ball.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler belongs on exactly zero rosters at this point for 2016 leagues. Frankly, it is hard to justify him having enough upside to be rostered in full-retention keeper leagues.

Texans | Owner defends Brock Osweiler

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 10:21:24 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler improved to 10-5 as a starting quarterback in the NFL following his team's Week 8 win over the Detroit Lions. While he continues to fight the public perception he is already a bust less than one year into his four-year, $72 million contract which include $37 million guaranteed, team owner Bob McNair is preaching patience. "He's still basically a rookie. He's going to make some mistakes, but he shows that he has the talent, he has the ability and has the leadership that the team has confidence in him," McNair said.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler's numbers (1,719 passing yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions for a 73.1 passer rating) has turned off fans and fantasy owners alike, but McNair isn't wrong. Head coach Bill O'Brien offense is almost the polar opposite of what Osweiler was exposed to in Denver, and it is obvious the quarterback is dealing with a lack of confidence at the moment. With that said, he's going to be difficult to trust anytime soon in fantasy, so he can be left on the waiver wire in most leagues.

Texans | Brock Osweiler bounces back

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 13:02:39 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler bounced back from a bad road outing by throwing for 186 yards and a touchdown in a 20-13 win over the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Tip: The Texans have been perfect at home this season, so this might not come as a surprise. Osweiler is still a risky bet to play because of his up-and-down nature, but keep an eye on the matchups. Osweiler may be a better play at home, where he has thrown eight of his nine touchdowns.

Fri, 28 Oct 2016 16:07:26 -0700

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler was held to only 131 yards in his last game and has thrown for less than 200 yards in three of the last five games. He does have five touchdowns and four interceptions during that span and should be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

Texans | Rebound game for Brock Osweiler?

Wed, 26 Oct 2016 21:23:33 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler will start in Week 8 against the Detroit Lions. The Lions are tied for the NFL lead with 18 passing touchdowns allowed. Detroit also has given up 273.0 yards per game through the air, 10th most in the league.

Fantasy Tip: The Lions have a solid front seven to apply pressure, but this might finally be the game Osweiler breaks out and posts solid fantasy numbers. In deeper fantasy leagues Osweiler is a good streaming option if you need a bye-week replacement or your primary matchup has a difficult matchup.

Texans | Brock Osweiler has full practice

Wed, 26 Oct 2016 16:00:18 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (foot) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has not been worth his $12 million contract this year, not even close. But, he does have one of the best matchups of the week against the Detroit Lions. Detroit has yielded 18 touchdowns through the air this year -- tied for most in the NFL. You may not want to start him in seasonal leagues, but Osweiler is a cheap contrarian option in daily formats.

Texans | Brock Osweiler won't be benched

Tue, 25 Oct 2016 14:37:13 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler will not be benched, according to head coach Bill O'Brien, who said he hasn't even considered benching the quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: The Texans may not be benching Osweiler, but fantasy coaches should be. Osweiler has thrown only eight touchdowns while throwing an equal amount of interceptions. He has been one of the most underwhelming players in the NFL through seven weeks and does not belong in the starting quarterback slot on fantasy rosters.

Texans | Brock Osweiler has terrible reunion

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 21:34:03 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler returned to Denver for the Week 7 game Monday, Oct. 24, and he completed 22 of his 41 pass attempts for just 131 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and one fumble lost.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has not jelled very well with DeAndre Hopkins, he had accuracy issues all evening and he rarely looked downfield. He has very little fantasy appeal heading into Week 8 against the Detroit Lions.

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 13:30:55 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (foot) fully participated in practice Saturday, Oct. 22, and is not on the injury report for Week 7.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has thrown eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in six games this season and will be facing a strong Denver Broncos pass defense in Week 7. Owners in all leagues probably should avoid Osweiler this week.

Texans | Brock Osweiler banged up

Fri, 21 Oct 2016 06:30:51 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (foot) was added to the injury report Thursday, Oct. 20, with a foot injury. He went full in practice Thursday, and he's expected to play in Week 7 on Monday Night Football.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has struggled with a 59 percent completion percentage, 1,402 yards, eight scores and eight picks. He returns to face his former team in the Denver Broncos, and he's not a strong play except in two-QB leagues.

Texans | Brock Osweiler off target in loss

Sun, 09 Oct 2016 16:43:57 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed just 19 of his 42 pass attempts for 184 yards, a touchdown and one interception in the Week 5 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler hasn't looked very good this season, throwing for six touchdowns and seven interceptions in five games, and he has tossed for 196 or fewer yards in two of his past three games. He is only worth fantasy attention in leagues which require two starting QBs.

Texans | Brock Osweiler so-so in victory

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 17:36:14 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 25 of his 37 pass attempts for 254 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 4 game against the Tennessee Titans. He also ran once for 14 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler bounced back from a disaster last week with the two touchdowns, but he also had two more picks and has turned it over six times in four games. He remains more of a QB2 in most fantasy leagues heading into Week 5 and beyond.

Fri, 23 Sep 2016 21:14:32 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said he takes the blame for the performance of the offense against the New England Patriots in Week 3, and he said he will become a better quarterback because of the experience.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has three touchdowns and four picks through three games, and he looks like a low-end QB2 at this point.

Texans | Brock Osweiler not on injury report

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 15:20:23 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (back) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Sept. 21, and is not on the injury report for Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler will not be limited by his back injury and should be able to make all the throws in the offensive playbook. He will be facing a tough New England Patriots defense and probably is not a great fantasy option for owners.

Texans | Brock Osweiler a full participant

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 15:43:58 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (back) participated fully in practice Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has been inconsistent throughout his short career, but he does have a favorable matchup against the New England Patriots this week. The Patriots yielded nearly 400 yards to Ryan Tannehill last week and Osweiler is a cheaper investment in daily contests.

Texans | Brock Osweiler has full practice

Mon, 19 Sep 2016 16:43:04 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler (back) participated fully in practice Monday, Sept. 19. Osweiler's status is simply an estimation of what his practice activity would be as the Patriots only held a walkthrough.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler has been decent so far in his first season with Texans, but he doesn't perform consistently enough to warrant QB1 status on a week-to-week basis. He's not a bad play in daily contests this week, however, going up against a New England Patriots defense that just gave up nearly 400 yards to Ryan Tannehill.

Texans | Brock Osweiler successful in debut

Sun, 11 Sep 2016 21:54:25 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 231 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears in his regular season team debut.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler jelled nicely with Will Fuller and DeAndre Hopkins, and the run game was good allowing him plenty of time to throw. If everyone on offense can remain healthy, Osweiler could be a decent QB2 in most fantasy leagues worth using in select weeks when the matchup is favorable.

Texans | Brock Osweiler sharp in win

Sun, 28 Aug 2016 19:12:54 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 11 of his 13 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown in a 34-24 preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler is an unknown as he enters his first season as a full-time starter, but a solid supporting cast makes him worth a look as a midrange QB2. He could develop into a decent trade chip.

Texans | Brock Osweiler talks chemistry with WRs

Wed, 24 Aug 2016 10:40:26 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler is encouraged by the chemistry he is developing with his receivers following the second preseason game. "I think the receivers are understanding when I want to get the ball out versus man versus maybe a zone coverage. Obviously, I'm learning the body language of each wide receiver when he's going to come out of his break, how he likes his football, where he likes his football. Every single day we're getting better."

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler is a low-end quarterback option who should be left to the waiver wire outside of SuperFlex and two-QB leagues. There is some potential in the revamped Houston attack, but fantasy owners should wait to see the offense clicking before relying on Osweiler as anything more than a desperation start.

Texans | Brock Osweiler decent in victory

Sat, 20 Aug 2016 22:22:18 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 12 of his 19 pass attempts for 124 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler looked a lot more comfortable in this game than his debut. He is going to be just fine as long as DeAndre Hopkins stays healthy, Will Fuller continues to progress and either Jaelen Strong or Braxton Miller can emerge as another viable target. He remains more of a low-end QB2 in most standard fantasy formats with some room to move up.

Texans | Tom Savage impressing in training camp

Sun, 07 Aug 2016 07:18:01 -0700

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage has had an impressive first week of training camp, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. "He's really worked hard to change his body, become stronger, become quicker, quicker release," O'Brien said. "He has a much better knowledge of our offense. It takes a while for that position. The only thing Tom needs is an opportunity. Tom is a good football player and he's put a lot of time in to get to where he is right now." Savage is competing with QBs Brandon Weeden and T.J. Yates to serve as the backup to QB Brock Osweiler.

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 20:47:06 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said he felt comfortable calling the plays and making adjustments at the line of scrimmage during practice Sunday, July 31.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler is a bit of an unknown heading into his first season as a full-time starter, and he shouldn't be counted on as more than a mid-range QB2.

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 17:06:08 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said he still has a "long way to go" to learn head coach Bill O'Brien's system, but O'Brien said Osweiler has lived up to expectations thus far.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins, Osweiler progressing

Mon, 06 Jun 2016 12:41:25 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler and WR DeAndre Hopkins have progressed in their chemistry, according to head coach Bill O'Brien, who said both players are working extremely hard.

Fantasy Tip: Hopkins has proven that he can succeed no matter who is throwing the football. He's still by far their best receiving option and worth a look in the mid-WR1 group. Osweiler, on the other hand, should not be drafted as a starting fantasy quarterback in his first season with the Texans.

Texans | Brock Osweiler learning new offense

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said Wednesday, May 11, that it has been fun learning a new offense and trying to get comfortable in his new surroundings. "It's fun," Osweiler said. "It's hard to judge that progress because we haven't hit the practice field and gone against a defense, but it's like you speak Spanish your whole life and then all of a sudden one day, they tell you to go learn French and do it in front of 70,000 people."

Fantasy Tip: Having a deep threat and talented receiver like Nuke Hopkins will certainly make things easier, and if Lamar Miller can fill the shoes of the departed Arian Foster, that would be huge, too. Osweiler will have a lot of pressure to perform, and we have really only seen glimpses of brilliance from him. He could be the next Tom Brady, or he could be the next Matt Cassel. It's hard to say at this point.
